Abstract:There have been several surveys of approaches to needs analysis in foreign-language teaching (James, 1974; Jordan, 1977; Chambers, 1980; Cunningsworth, 1983; Brindley, 1989; Riddell, 1991; van Hest & Oud-de Glas, 1990; Robinson, 1991; Jordan, forthcoming). During the period of 20 years covered by these surveys, both the focus and scope of needs analysis have changed. The dominant focus of early needs analysis was occupational/EOP, but this later changed to academic language/EAP (for the origin of the terms EOP and EAP, see T.Johns, 1981: 16). More recently the focus has shifted again to include general language learning. The scope of needs analysis up to and including Munby (1978) was syllabus specification derived from target-situation needs, but the scope has since been broadened to include areas specifically excluded by Munby practicalities and constraints, teaching methods and learning strategies, and, recently, materials selection. This evolution can be summarised by characterising each of three stages in the development of needs analysis, and to hint at the future by suggesting a fourth stage (see table below). Much of the later work in needs analysis is either not widely known or (Richards, 1984, cited by Nunan 1988 a: 17) it is still assumed that curriculum development in language teaching should concentrate on language syllabuses to the exclusion of broader aspects such as needs analysis, methodology and evaluation. It therefore seems appropriate to survey the field of needs analysis in a broad context. This survey concentrates on work relating to English (for a survey of recent work in other European languages, see van Hest & Oud-de Glas, 1990).

Abstract:Needs assessments are a useful part of the program development cycle. However, while step-by-step models are available to guide assessments, they may not be detailed enough for the pragmatic questions that arise. The planning process should be viewed as dynamic and flexible, able to be tailored to the agency’s specific organisational and environmental characteristics. This paper presents a practical discussion for social workers charged with planning and implementing a needs assessment. Practitioners are empowered to consider several concerns or issues simultaneously, to build upon their organisational knowledge, and start the process where it intuitively makes sense. Major issues discussed are: planning the needs assessment, evaluating contextual factors, and design considerations.

Identifying Areas of Multiple Social Need: A Case Study in the Preparation of Children Services Plans

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to compare two methods for the identification of priority areas for intervention and funding based on quantifiable assessments of multiple social need. This is an increasingly important aspect of evidence-based policy in a range of social programmes both in Britain, and in other countries. The context within which this methodology is assessed is the preparation of multiannual plans for the provision of services to children and young people. This is a statutory requirement in Britain on all local authorities, and is based on the Children Act 1989. The first method develops a composite indicator in which areas are scored on several variables, and the scores combined to identify those areas that are consistently high across all variables. The advantage of this method lies in its arithmetic transparency, which makes it ideal for use by local authorities and agencies engaged in needs assessment and planning. The potential drawback is that this composite indicator disregards any spatial structure in the data and gives no measure of statistical significance. The second method identifies statistically significant clusters using the exploratory technique of Besag and Newell for cluster detection in rare events. Clusters are combined to identify those areas affected by multiple problems. As shown in the paper, the two methods produce similar patterns of social need which is reassuring from a policy perspective as a large number of areas are now requiring a multiagency ‘joined-up’ approach for needs assessment, targeting intervention, and monitoring outcomes. The findings of this paper will be of relevance to researchers and practitioners.

Abstract:Several comprehensive User Centred Design methodologies have been published in the last decade, but while they all focus on users, they disagree on exactly what activities should take place during the User Needs Analysis, what the end products of a User Needs Analysis should cover, how User Needs Analysis findings should be presented, and how these should be documented and communicated. This paper highlights issues in different stages of the User Needs Analysis that appear to cause considerable confusion among researchers and practitioners. It is our hope that the User-Centred Design community may begin to address these issues systematically. A case study is presented reporting a User Needs Analysis methodology and process as well as the user interface design of an application supporting communication among first responders in a major disaster. It illustrates some of the differences between the User-Centred Design and the Requirements Engineering communities and shows how and where User-Centred Design and Requirements Engineering methodologies should be integrated, or at least aligned, to avoid some of the problems practitioners face during the User Needs Analysis.

Abstract:This study evaluated level of service need before and after a short-term community mental health case management intervention from the perspective of both clients and case managers. Ontario Common Assessment of Need data were used to describe client needs. McNemar's test was applied to assess differences in pre- and post- need scores. Psychological distress, company, daytime activities, and physical health were most commonly rated by clients as unmet needs at enrolment. At discharge, there was a significant change in psychological distress from the perspective of clients, and in psychological distress and daytime activities from the perspective of case managers. Statistically significant changes were observed for Total Need, Total Unmet Need and Met Need scores from the perspective of case managers. While both clients and case managers reported changes in total service needs between admission and discharge from short-term case management, clients were less likely to report a difference in needs.

Abstract:Needs assessment in mental health is a complex and multifaceted process that involves different steps, from assessing mental health needs at the population or individual level to assessing the different needs of individuals or groups of people. This review focuses on quantitative needs assessment tools for people with mental health problems. Our aim was to find all possible tools that can be used to assess different needs within different populations, according to their diverse uses. A comprehensive literature search with the Boolean operators "Mental health" AND "Needs assessment" was conducted in the PubMed and PsychINFO electronic databases. The search was performed with the inclusion of all results without time or other limits. Only papers addressing quantitative studies on needs assessment in people with mental health problems were included. Additional articles were added through a review of previous review articles that focused on a narrower range of such needs and their assessment. Twenty-nine different need-assessment tools specifically designed for people with mental health problems were found. Some tools can only be used by professionals, some by patients, some even by caregivers, or a combination of all three. Within each recognized tool, there are different fields of needs, so they can be used for different purposes within the needs assessment process, according to the final research or clinical aims. The added value of this review is that the retrieved tools can be used for assessment at the individual level, research purposes or evaluation at the outcome level. Therefore, best needs assessment tool can be chosen based on the specific goals or focus of the related needs assessment.

Abstract:This research aims to determine the initial situation in the field regarding the need to develop the Content Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) model to increase literary appreciation. This research uses a qualitative descriptive method that aims to analyze students’ needs in learning literature by involving two variables. This research is only limited to analyzing the needs derived from the results of interviews and questionnaires of students. The data collection technique in this research uses the needs analysis instrument: interviews for lecturers and questionnaires for students. The results of the analysis showed that (1) lecturers have not conducted coaching and development of CLIL learning models, so they are constrained, (2) lecturers have not developed and used CLIL models, so they support and express readiness to be involved in development, (3) the learning models used by lecturers so far have no indication of leading to CLIL learning models, (4) understanding of students with less categories, and (5) students have abilities that need to be improved in a better direction. The implication is that the development of the CLIL model is a strategy to increase literary appreciation.

Abstract:This chapter describes a methodology for representing mental models as maps, extracting the maps from texts, and analyzing and comparing the maps. The robot study is an analysis of literary texts, whereas the writing study is an analysis of student interviews and written journal entries. Because the goal of this study was to represent the depictions of each robot as accurately as possible, a software program, SKI, was used to make implicit statements explicit. The use of human raters also introduces problems related to inconsistency in the level of analysis as a coder moves from one text to another. Particularly when dealing with a large set of texts, it is possible to have judgments being made in a qualitatively different manner at the beginning and end of coding a set of texts.

It helps course designers to set objectives, choose content, method of instruction, appropriate teaching aids, and classroom activities for different courses. This paper reports the perceptions of the researchers on the English language learning needs of the English undergraduate students of Shaheed Benazir Bhutto University Sheringal, Pakistan. The data is based on the researchers’ personal experience and first-hand observation of the population as the researchers have been teaching in the target context for about a decade. Furthermore, the researchers have always been in discussion with their students and colleagues about the target students’ English learning needs, preferred learning styles, motivation in learning English, interest, strengths/weaknesses, and attitude toward English learning in the target setting. Learners’ assignments, exam answer sheets, and presentations have also been used is a source of data collection. A needs analysis model proposed by Hutchinson and Waters (1987) has been applied in order to analyze the data. The results show that the students lack well grammatical sentences, have poor spellings, capitalization problems, limited vocabulary, unaware of collocations, poor/slow reading comprehension, and lack of effective presentation skills. Furthermore, most of the students have a lack of involvement in classroom activities and feel shy about speaking the English language. It was reported that the provision of authentic material, interesting activities, suitable audio-visual aids, relevant texts, language labs, and other logistic arrangements can better help them in learning the English language. The findings demonstrate that the students wished to have a learner-centered-course that helps them excel in their academic life and learning the English language.

Abstract:This study aims to investigate undergraduate students’ needs analysis in English for Academic Purposes. In this study, three hundred-eight first-year students and forty-one EAP and subject area instructors at Wachemo University participated. The research employed a mixed-methods approach that utilized a questionnaire and a semi-structured interview to ascertain the important academic English language skills and sub-skills prioritized by participants. The findings revealed that the participants indicated all the academic language skills as important for students' academic study in the university. The instructors prioritized the academic language skills (academic reading and academic vocabulary) as important, whereas the students ranked the language skills (academic writing and academic speaking) as the first importance. The study emphasized the importance of conducting learners’ needs analysis before developing any English for Academic Purposes course. Findings in the current study could be provided as implications for course designers and recommendations for future studies. Abstract:This paper describes a ten-item instrument for measurement of Maslow's need hierarchy. Data were obtained from 247 Certified General Accountants, 355 Chartered Accountants, and 290 Engineers and Scientists employed in public and private organizations across Canada. Responses were analyzed for five factors using oblique rotation. The factors corresponded to the security, social, esteem, autonomy, and self-fulfillment categories. Analysis for two factors resulted in separation of the security needs from the higher needs. There was no evidence for a deficiency-growth (Maslow, A. H., Toward a psychology of being. Toronto: van Nostrand 1962) separation.
Needs assessment of nurse researchers through a research lifecycle framework

Abstract:Objective: Health sciences librarian roles are evolving to better meet the needs of faculty. This study explores nursing faculty needs at the University of British Columbia through the research lifecycle framework of planning, conducting, disseminating, and assessing the impact of their research. Methods: A mixed methods survey study with Likert scale, multiple-choice, or ordinal ranking-scale questions and six open-response questions was conducted. The format was a web-based Qualtrics survey; participants had approximately three weeks to respond. Results: Nursing faculty identified the dissemination phase as benefiting most from library support prioritizing reference management and archiving research data as the top needs in that phase. Assessing impact skills such as citation analysis and Altmetrics training was ranked second. The Planning phase was ranked third with systematic review and literature review support most needed. The Conducting phase was identified as the phase where they needed the least support. Conclusion: Understanding the needs of researchers and enhancing scholar productivity is vital to offering responsive library research services. Across the research lifecycle, nursing faculty identified reference management, data management, metrics evaluation, systematic reviews, and literature reviews as the key areas for which they need support.

Abstract:To face the Asian Economic Community, active mastery of English is very important so that people can compete with good workers from their own area or workers from other Asian countries. This study aims to find out (1) whether the problems faced by the students of the Faculty of Economics, Udayana University in learning English and (2) whether the English language needs needed by economic students at the Faculty of Economics and Business, Udayana University to design the correct syllabus and effective in teaching English. Analysis of English language needs is done by giving questionnaires to students for their answers, those questions concerning the field of English what they are very proficient (speaking, listening, reading and writing) and which areas of English they find difficult to learn, and choose what lessons they think are necessary that have not been provided in the current syllabus. The answers from these students will be analyzed according to the need analysis by Hutchinson and Waters (1994) and Dudley-Evans and St. John (1998). From this research, it is expected that students can improve their English language skills in economics majors and also can design a new syllabus that is more effective in accordance with the needs of students at the Faculty of Economics, Udayana University. Abstract:The design of new products and services starts with the identification of needs of potential customers or users. Many existing methods like observations, surveys, and experiments draw upon specific efforts to elicit unsatisfied needs from individuals. At the same time, a huge amount of user-generated content in micro blogs is freely accessible at no cost. While this information is already analyzed to monitor sentiments towards existing offerings, it has not yet been tapped for the elicitation of needs. In this paper, we lay an important foundation for this endeavor: we propose a Machine Learning approach to identify those posts that do express needs. Our evaluation of tweets in the e-mobility domain demonstrates that the small share of relevant tweets can be identified with remarkable precision or recall results. Applied to huge data sets, the developed method should enable scalable need elicitation support for innovation managers - across thousands of users, and thus augment the service design tool set available to him.

Abstract:Children's psychological needs are at the heart of contemporary public concern, part of the everyday vocabulary of countless numbers of social welfare workers and teachers, policy-makers and parents. This chapter is a by-product of nearly two decades spent exploring the borderlands between child psychology, education and social welfare, especially relating to children under 5 years.To summarize the analysis, the chapter discusses apparent simplicity and directness of need statements in a highly condensed combination of both empirical and evaluative claims. They are often not fully specified, but depend on a consensus of knowledge and values between author and reader, horticultural adviser and gardener, social-worker and client, policymaker and community. Children's needs is a powerful rhetorical device for constructing images of childhood, prescribing for care and education, and judging the quality of adult-child relationships. Hence, the chapter explores to draw attention to the continuing role of psychology in the reconstruction of childhood in terms other than children's needs.

Abstract:Critical literacy models have been integrated into learning process in the English-speaking countries such as Australia, New Zealand, America, England, and some Europian countriea. As matter of fact, the critical literacy model used particularly for teaching reading classess is rarely found, especially the model which fits with the characteristics of EFL students. This study aims to explore the needs analysis development of critical literacy model for teaching reading in EFL reading class. This research adapted the Four D model which consists of four steps; defining, designing, developing, and disseminating. The results revealed the following. First, in defining, the researcher conducted preliminary study in English Language Education Study Program in three universities in Yogyakarta which was meant to analyze the students’ problems in the real setting. Second, the researcher created the prototype of the needs analysis in accordance with the results of the preliminary study. Third, the researcher validated the needs analysis to the two experts and conducted field testing to evaluate the validity of the questionnaire. The results of the needs analysis validation process show that the questionnaire is feasible (87.5 %) to assess the students’ needs of critical literacy model. Furthermore, in order to evaluate the practicality of the questionnaire, the researcher conducted a preliminary field testing to 27 students of English Language Education Study Program in a private university in Yogyakarta. In conclusion, the results of the needs analysis become the basis to develop a critical literacy model which is used for teaching EFL reading classes.
