Abstract:Observations of glacier mass changes are key to understanding the response of glaciers to climate change and related impacts, such as regional runoff, ecosystem changes, and global sea level rise. Spaceborne optical and radar sensors make it possible to quantify glacier elevation changes, and thus multi-annual mass changes, on a regional and global scale. However, estimates from a growing number of studies show a wide range of results with differences often beyond uncertainty bounds. Here, we present the outcome of a community-based inter-comparison experiment using spaceborne optical stereo (ASTER) and synthetic aperture radar interferometry (TanDEM-X) data to estimate elevation changes for defined glaciers and target periods that pose different assessment challenges. Using provided or self-processed digital elevation models (DEMs) for five test sites, 12 research groups provided a total of 97 spaceborne elevation-change datasets using various processing approaches. Validation with airborne data showed that using an ensemble estimate is promising to reduce random errors from different instruments and processing methods but still requires a more comprehensive investigation and correction of systematic errors. We found that scene selection, DEM processing, and co-registration have the biggest impact on the results. Other processing steps, such as treating spatial data voids, differences in survey periods, or radar penetration, can still be important for individual cases. Future research should focus on testing different implementations of individual processing steps (e.g. co-registration) and addressing issues related to temporal corrections, radar penetration, glacier area changes, and density conversion. Finally, there is a clear need for our community to develop best practices, use open, reproducible software, and assess overall uncertainty to enhance inter-comparison and empower physical process insights across glacier elevation-change studies.

Abstract:To avoid the disadvantage of the traditional over-the-horizon (OTH) radar, which uses only the measurements of ionospheric parameters obtained from an ionosonde to estimate the target parameters, this paper proposes a new multiple-input multiple-output skywave OTH radar, which estimates the ionospheric and target parameters jointly by exploiting the data received by both the ionosonde and the radar receivers. First, we consider the scenario where the prior distribution of ionospheric parameters is unknown, the joint maximum likelihood estimator is developed and the Cramer-Rao bound (CRB) is derived to analyze the estimation performance. Then, the case with known Gaussian ionospheric prior distribution is analyzed, we develop the hybrid maximum likelihood and maximum a posteriori estimator, and the hybrid CRB (HCRB) is derived for analyzing the estimation performance. Finally, we show that the proposed joint estimation approaches lead to better accuracy for the ionospheric and target parameters estimation. We prove that both the CRB and the HCRB vary with the ionosonde measurement error covariance, and the corresponding upper and lower bounds are derived.

Abstract:In practice, the configuration of spaceborne multistatic synthetic aperture radar (MSAR) is generally three-dimensional (3D) stereo geometry, under which condition most current algorithms of motion parameter estimation are invalid. In this study, a joint space-time-frequency method is presented to estimate motion parameters of ground moving target for MSAR of 3D geometry. First, the array expression for azimuth echo named extended space-time model (ESTM) is derived; then on the basis of ESTM, a spatial time-frequency distribution method based on fractional Fourier transform algorithm is derived; finally the performance of the presented method is analysed, and the advantages comparing with velocity synthetic aperture radar are discussed via some computer simulations. The work provides a feasible method of multi-channel processing for the 3D MSAR.

Abstract:A new technology for remote measurements of marine surface pressure has been proposed, employing a V‐band differential absorption radar and a radiometric temperature sounder to calculate the total column atmospheric mass. Observing System Simulation Experiments (OSSEs) are performed to evaluate the potential impact of Spaceborne Marine Surface Pressure (SMSP) on Numerical Weather Prediction. These experiments build on prior efforts (Privé, McLinden, et al., 2023, https://doi.org/10.16993/tellusa.3254), but with an updated version of the OSSE framework and with more sophisticated simulation of the SMSP observations and a longer experiment period. Several different instrument configurations are compared, including both scanning and non‐scanning orbits. SMSP impacts are calculated for analysis quality and forecast skill, and a forecast sensitivity observation impact tool is employed to place SMSP observations in context with the global observing network. The effects of rain contamination on observation quality are explored. Different magnitudes of simulated SMSP observation error are tested in the context of data assimilation to show the range of potential behaviors. Overall, SMSP observations are found to be most beneficial in the southern hemisphere extratropics, with statistically significant forecast improvements for the first 72 hr of the forecast. A constellation of four non‐scanning SMSP satellites is found to outperform a single scanning instrument with a 250 km wide swath.

Near-Real Time Thermospheric Density Retrieval from Precise Low Earth Orbit Spacecraft Ephemerides During Geomagnetic Storms

Abstract:We present a methodology to generate low-latency, high spatio-temporal resolution thermospheric density estimates using publicly available Low Earth Orbit (LEO) spacecraft ephemerides. This provides a means of generating density estimates that can be used in a data-assimilative context by the satellite operations and thermosphere communities. It also contributes to the data base of high-resolution density estimates during geomagnetic storms -- which remains one of the major gaps for the development and benchmarking of density models. Using accelerometer-derived densities from the Gravity Recovery And Climate Experiment Follow-On (GRACE-FO) spacecraft as truth, our method surpasses Energy Dissipation Rate-Type density retrieval techniques and three widely used operational density models in terms of accuracy: EDR (103.37%), JB2008 (85.43%), DTM2000 (52.73%), and NRLMSISE-00 (12.31%). We demonstrate the robustness of our methodology during a critical time for spacecraft operators -- attempting to operate in the presence of geomagnetic storms, by reconstructing density profiles along the orbits of three LEO satellites during 80 geomagnetic storms. These profiles exhibit high spatial and temporal resolution compared to three operational thermospheric models, highlighting the operational applicability and potential for their use in model validation. Our findings suggest that the increasing availability of precise orbit determination data offers a valuable, yet underutilized, resource that could provide a significant improvement to data assimilative thermospheric models, ultimately enhancing both spacecraft operations and thermospheric modeling efforts.

Physics‐based Approach to Thermospheric Density Estimation using CubeSat GPS Data

Abstract:In Low Earth Orbit (LEO), atmospheric drag is the largest contributor to trajectory prediction error. The current thermospheric density model used in operations, the High Accuracy Satellite Drag Model (HASDM), applies corrections to an empirical density model every 3 hours using observations of 75+ calibration satellites. This work aims to improve global thermospheric density estimation by utilizing a physics‐based space environment model and precise GPS‐based orbit estimates of LEO CubeSats. The data assimilation approach presented here estimates drivers of the Thermosphere‐Ionosphere‐Electrodynamics General Circulation Model (TIE‐GCM) every 1.5 hours using CubeSat GPS information. In this work, Spire Global CubeSat data are used to demonstrate the method using only ten satellites; the true strength of the method is its potential to exploit data already collected on large LEO constellations (hundreds of CubeSats). Precise Orbit Determination (POD) information from ten CubeSats over 12 days is used to sense a global density field when Kp historical data show a minor and moderate geomagnetic storm in succession. This paper provides a direct comparison of estimated density, derived by our new method, to HASDM and Swarm mission derived density. A propagation analysis is also executed by comparing the CubeSat POD data to orbits propagated using our estimated density versus HASDM density. The analyses show that the estimated density is within 35% of HASDM during storm‐time conditions, and that the propagation using the estimated density yields an improvement of 26% over NRLMSISE‐00 compared to HASDM, while outperforming HASDM during the second storm peak.

Abstract:With the proliferation of low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites carrying GNSS receivers on‐board commercial operators such as Spire, Starlink, OneWeb, and Amazon, an abundance of high‐cadence tracking data could become available to the scientific community. While GNSS measurements from geodetic‐grade receivers on satellites like SWARM, CHAMP, GRACE, and GOCE have been extensively used for atmospheric density retrieval, limited research has explored the potential of less accurate data from commercial operators. This study focuses on two methods to estimate atmospheric densities from precision orbit determination (POD) products—precise positions and velocities—utilizing synthetic data sets. The first method, termed "POD accelerometry" treats the POD products as measurements to a reduced‐dynamic POD scheme with the goal of estimating densities using stochastic parameters. The second method known as the energy dissipation rate (EDR) approach derives densities from changes in orbital energy. The relative contributions of various error sources—dynamics model uncertainties, and POD noise—to the estimated densities are studied for a limited set of orbital regimes and space weather activity, and possible error mitigation strategies are suggested. The performance of the two methods and their sensitivities to these various error sources are compared for circular orbits in the altitude regime 300–800 km during solar minimum F10.7=72.5 . EDR and POD accelerometry have comparable performances for high drag, low POD noise environments, whereas the latter performs considerably better in low drag <10−6m/s2 , high POD noise (>25 cm) environments, with densities retrieved at higher cadences for the orbital regimes considered in this work during solar minimum.

Abstract:Abstract. quantitative precipitation estimation (QPE) of snowfall has generally been expressed in power-law form between equivalent radar reflectivity factor (Ze) and liquid equivalent snow rate (SR). It is known that there is large variability in the prefactor of the power law due to changes in particle size distribution (PSD), density, and fall velocity, whereas the variability of the exponent is considerably smaller. The dual-wavelength radar reflectivity ratio (DWR) technique can improve SR accuracy by estimating one of the PSD parameters (characteristic diameter), thus reducing the variability due to the prefactor. The two frequencies commonly used in dual-wavelength techniques are Ku- and Ka-bands. The basic idea of DWR is that the snow particle size-to-wavelength ratio is falls in the Rayleigh region at Ku-band but in the Mie region at Ka-band. We propose a method for snow rate estimation by using NASA D3R radar DWR and Ka-band reflectivity observations collected during a long-duration synoptic snow event on 30–31 January 2012 during the GCPEx (GPM Cold-season Precipitation Experiment). Since the particle mass can be estimated using 2-D video disdrometer (2DVD) fall speed data and hydrodynamic theory, we simulate the DWR and compare it directly with D3R radar measurements. We also use the 2DVD-based mass to compute the 2DVD-based SR. Using three different mass estimation methods, we arrive at three respective sets of Z–SR and SR(Zh, DWR) relationships. We then use these relationships with D3R measurements to compute radar-based SR. Finally, we validate our method by comparing the D3R radar-retrieved SR with accumulated SR directly measured by a well-shielded Pluvio gauge for the entire synoptic event.

Maximum likelihood estimation of cloud height from multi-angle satellite imagery

Abstract:We develop a new estimation technique for recovering depth-of-field from multiple stereo images. Depth-of-field is estimated by determining the shift in image location resulting from different camera viewpoints. When this shift is not divisible by pixel width, the multiple stereo images can be combined to form a super-resolution image. By modeling this super-resolution image as a realization of a random field, one can view the recovery of depth as a likelihood estimation problem. We apply these modeling techniques to the recovery of cloud height from multiple viewing angles provided by the MISR instrument on the Terra Satellite. Our efforts are focused on a two layer cloud ensemble where both layers are relatively planar, the bottom layer is optically thick and textured, and the top layer is optically thin. Our results demonstrate that with relative ease, we get comparable estimates to the M2 stereo matcher which is the same algorithm used in the current MISR standard product (details can be found in [IEEE Transactions on Geoscience and Remote Sensing 40 (2002) 1547--1559]). Moreover, our techniques provide the possibility of modeling all of the MISR data in a unified way for cloud height estimation. Research is underway to extend this framework for fast, quality global estimates of cloud height.

Abstract:ABSTRACT A long-standing problem in meteor science has been the persistent presence of bias in the measured value of atmospheric scale heights obtained from radio meteor echoes. A common practice of fitting a linear function for bias correction follows the assumption that the systematic bias is devoid of seasonal asymmetry. This would be true if the mass and the velocity distribution of meteoroids remain invariant, both spatially and temporally. But so far no such convincing evidence has been published. On the contrary, fundamental arguments suggest that a universal mass function of radio meteoroids is counterintuitive. This parameter cannot remain invariant due to the intrinsic variability in the meteor response function resulting from the Earth’s motion on the plane of ecliptic. In this paper, we show that an inverse relation exists between the width of meteor height distribution, expressed in unit of atmospheric scale height, and the exponent of the mass function. The overall mean of this exponent for the Sodankylä radar is $1.91 \pm 0.02$, modulated by a seasonal variation from the mean of the order of $\sim \pm 0.1$. The stated inverse relation is applied to correct for the effect of mass distribution on the height distribution. Allowing for variable mass correction effectively removes the non-linear bias in the measured scale heights in the meteor ionization region.

Abstract:The Micro-Sized Microwave Atmospheric Satellite (MicroMAS-2) is a 12-channel passive microwave radiometer on a CubeSat developed by Massachusetts Institute of Technology Lincoln Laboratory. MicroMAS-2 observations (1) enhance the current observing system capabilities and (2) mitigate the potential loss of some existing observations. Observing System Simulation Experiments (OSSEs) quantitatively estimate the expected impact of adding the MicroMAS-2 to the current global operational analysis and forecast systems or to a data gap scenario. First, MicroMAS-2 data on one low Earth-orbiting platform were simulated by the Community Radiative Transfer Model from the NASA GEOS-5 Nature Run, which serves as the truth in the OSSE. The assimilation of the MicroMAS-2 observations into the research version of the January 2015 NOAA Global Data Assimilation System in addition to the current operational observation system and in addition to a data gap scenario shows improvement on both analysis and forecast performance skills. Precision Measurements of Radar Transverse Scattering Speeds From Meteor Phase Characteristics

Abstract:Abstract In this paper, we describe an improved technique for using the backscattered phase from meteor radar echo measurements just prior to the specular point ( t 0 ) to calculate meteor speeds and their uncertainty. Our method, which builds on earlier work of Cervera et al. (1997, https://doi.org/10.1029/96RS03638 ), scans possible speeds in the Fresnel distance‐time domain with a dynamic, sliding window and derives a best‐speed estimate from the resultant speed distribution. We test the performance of our method, called pre‐ t 0 speeds by sliding‐slopes technique (PSSST), on transverse scattered meteor echoes observed by the Middle Atmosphere Alomar Radar System (MAARSY) and the Canadian Meteor Orbit Radar (CMOR) and compare the results to time‐of‐flight and Fresnel transform speed estimates. Our novel technique is shown to produce good results when compared to both model and speed measurements using other techniques. We show that our speed precision is ± 5% at speeds less than 40 km/s, and we find that more than 90% of all CMOR multistation echoes have PSSST solutions. For CMOR data, PSSST is robust against the selection of critical phase value and poor phase unwrapping. Pick errors of up to ± 6 pulses for meteor speeds less than about 50 km/s produce errors of less than ± 5% of the meteoroid speed. In addition, the width of the PSSST speed Kernel density estimate (KDE) is used as a natural measure of uncertainty that captures both noise and t 0 pick uncertainties. On the comparison between MASS and G-SCIDAR techniques

Abstract:The Multi Aperture Scintillation Sensor (MASS) and the Generalized-Scintillation Detection and Ranging (Generalized SCIDAR) are two instruments conceived to measure the optical turbulence (OT) vertical distribution on the whole troposphere and low stratosphere (~ 20 km) widely used in the astronomical context. In this paper we perform a detailed analysis/comparison of measurements provided by the two instruments and taken during the extended site testing campaign carried out on 2007 at Cerro Paranal and promoted by the European Southern Observatory (ESO). The main and final goal of the study is to provide a detailed estimation of the measurements reliability i.e dispersion of turbulence measurements done by the two instruments at different heights above the ground. This information is directly related to our ability in estimating the absolute value of the turbulence stratification. To better analyse the uncertainties between the MASS and the GS we took advantage of the availability of measurements taken during the same campaign by a third independent instrument (DIMM - Differential Imaging Motion Monitor) measuring the integrated turbulence extended on the whole 20 km. Such a cross-check comparison permitted us to define the reliability of the instruments and their measurements, their limits and the contexts in which their use can present some risk.

Abstract:Abstract An observing system simulation experiment is used to examine the impact of assimilating water vapor–sensitive satellite infrared brightness temperatures and Doppler radar reflectivity and radial velocity observations on the analysis accuracy of a cool season extratropical cyclone. Assimilation experiments are performed for four different combinations of satellite, radar, and conventional observations using an ensemble Kalman filter assimilation system. Comparison with the high-resolution “truth” simulation indicates that the joint assimilation of satellite and radar observations reduces errors in cloud properties compared to the case in which only conventional observations are assimilated. The satellite observations provide the most impact in the mid- to upper troposphere, whereas the radar data also improve the cloud analysis near the surface and aloft as a result of their greater vertical resolution and larger overall sample size. Errors in the wind field are also significantly reduced when radar radial velocity observations were assimilated. Overall, assimilating both satellite and radar data creates the most accurate model analysis, which indicates that both observation types provide independent and complimentary information and illustrates the potential for these datasets for improving mesoscale model analyses and ensuing forecasts.

SkyWatch: A Passive Multistatic Radar Network for the Measurement of Object Position and Velocity

Abstract:(Abridged) Quantitative three-dimensional (3D) position and velocity estimates obtained by passive radar will assist the Galileo Project in the detection and classification of aerial objects by providing critical measurements of range, location, and kinematics. These parameters will be combined with those derived from the Project{\textquoteright}s suite of electromagnetic sensors and used to separate known aerial objects from those exhibiting anomalous kinematics. SkyWatch, a passive multistatic radar system based on commercial broadcast FM radio transmitters of opportunity, is a network of receivers spaced at geographical scales that enables estimation of the 3D position and velocity time series of objects at altitudes up to 80km, horizontal distances up to 150km, and at velocities to {\textpm}2{\textpm}2km/s ({\textpm}6{\textpm}6Mach). The receivers are designed to collect useful data in a variety of environments varying by terrain, transmitter power, relative transmitter distance, adjacent channel strength, etc. In some cases, the direct signal from the transmitter may be large enough to be used as the reference with which the echoes are correlated. In other cases, the direct signal may be weak or absent, in which case a reference is communicated to the receiver from another network node via the internet for echo correlation. Various techniques are discussed specific to the two modes of operation and a hybrid mode. Delay and Doppler data are sent via internet to a central server where triangulation is used to deduce time series of 3D positions and velocities. A multiple receiver (multistatic) radar experiment is undergoing Phase 1 testing, with several receivers placed at various distances around the Harvard{\textendash}Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (CfA), to validate full 3D position and velocity recovery.

High-Cadence Thermospheric Density Estimation enabled by Machine Learning on Solar Imagery

Abstract:Accurate estimation of thermospheric density is critical for precise modeling of satellite drag forces in low Earth orbit (LEO). Improving this estimation is crucial to tasks such as state estimation, collision avoidance, and re-entry calculations. The largest source of uncertainty in determining thermospheric density is modeling the effects of space weather driven by solar and geomagnetic activity. Current operational models rely on ground-based proxy indices which imperfectly correlate with the complexity of solar outputs and geomagnetic responses. In this work, we directly incorporate NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) extreme ultraviolet (EUV) spectral images into a neural thermospheric density model to determine whether the predictive performance of the model is increased by using space-based EUV imagery data instead of, or in addition to, the ground-based proxy indices. We demonstrate that EUV imagery can enable predictions with much higher temporal resolution and replace ground-based proxies while significantly increasing performance relative to current operational models. Our method paves the way for assimilating EUV image data into operational thermospheric density forecasting models for use in LEO satellite navigation processes.

Abstract:Radar measurements of gravitational mass-movements like snow avalanches have become increasingly important for scientific flow observations, real-time detection and monitoring. Independence of visibility is a main advantage for rapid and reliable detection of those events, and achievable high-resolution imaging proves invaluable for scientific measurements of the complete flow evolution. Existing radar systems are made for either detection with low-resolution or they are large devices and permanently installed at test-sites. We present mGEODAR, a mobile FMCW (frequency modulated continuous wave) radar system for high-resolution measurements and low-resolution gravitational mass-movement detection and monitoring purposes due to a versatile frequency generation scheme. We optimize the performance of different frequency settings with loop cable measurements and show the freespace range sensitivity with data of a car as moving point source. About 15 dB signal-to-noise ratio is achieved for the cable test and about 5 dB or 10 dB for the car in detection and research mode, respectively. By combining continuous recording in the low resolution detection mode with real-time triggering of the high resolution research mode, we expect that mGEODAR enables autonomous measurement campaigns for infrastructure safety and mass-movement research purposes in rapid response to changing weather and snow conditions.

Abstract:The objective of this paper is to evaluate the potential of a Bayesian inversion algorithm using microwave multisensor data for the retrieval of surface rainfall rate and cloud parameters. The retrieval scheme is based on the maximum a posteriori probability (MAP) method, extended for the use of both spaceborne passive and active microwave data. The MAP technique for precipitation profiling is also proposed to approach the problem of the radar-swath synthetic broadening; that is, the capability to exploit the combined information also where only radiometric data are available. In order to show an application to airborne data, two case studies are selected within the Tropical Ocean-Global Atmosphere Coupled Ocean-Atmosphere Response Experiment (TOGA-COARE). They refer to a stratiform storm region and an intense squall line of two mesoscale convective systems, which occurred over the ocean on February 20 and 22, 1993, respectively. The estimated rainfall rates and columnar hydrometeor contents derived from the proposed algorithms are compared to each other and to radar estimates based on reflectivity-rainrate (Z-R) relationships. Results in terms of reflectivity profiles and upwelling brightness temperatures, reconstructed from the estimated cloud structures, are also discussed. A database of combined measurements acquired at nadir during various TOGA-COARE flights, is used for applying the radar-swath synthetic broadening technique in the case of an along-track radar-failure countermeasure. A simulated test of the latter technique is performed using the case studies of February 20 and 22, 1993.
