Abstract:Purpose: The purpose of this article is to provide a holistic understanding of likely mechanisms of fatigue during high-intensity sports lasting 1–10 min. Methods: The contributions from skeletal muscle, central nervous system (motor drive), and fatigue sensations to lower performance during intense cycling, running, rowing, repeated sprints, or knee extensions were evaluated. Results: At the end of exercise, reductions of external power, force, or velocity and peak isometric forces are moderate (10–30%), motor drive falls by <8%, and fatigue sensations are extreme, e.g., Borg's rating of perceived exertion >18. Multiple putative fatigue factors can change simultaneously to interactively lower performance and/or provide protection. Major detrimental factors include raised intramuscular inorganic phosphate, severe extra- and intracellular acidosis, cerebral hypoxemia, large reduction of trans-sarcolemmal K+-gradient (also Na+- and Cl−-gradients), and reduced muscle glycogen levels. Factors resisting fatigue include elevated adrenaline, extracellular lactate, interstitial [H+] and [K+], and a normal trans-sarcolemmal Cl−-gradient. Conclusions: Raised inorganic phosphate interacting with intracellular H+, and a large rundown of trans-sarcolemmal ion gradients are likely to cause peripheral fatigue. Severe arterial hypoxemia (due to plasma acidosis, raised core temperature, lowered PaO2), and factors released from glycogen lowered muscles, e.g., interleukin-6, may cause central fatigue and strong fatigue sensations.
Effect of the Length of the Microcycle on the Daily External Load, Fatigue, Sleep Quality, Stress, and Muscle Soreness of Professional Soccer Players: A Full-Season Study

Abstract:Sports Health, Ahead of Print. Background:The aim of this study was to analyze the effect of the length of the microcycle (ie, training period from the day after the match to the following match) on the daily external load and perceived wellness of professional soccer players (Spanish LaLiga Smartbank).Hypothesis:The length of the microcycle has a significant effect on the daily external load and perceived wellness.Study Design:Longitudinal study.Level of Evidence:Level 3.Methods:Data were collected daily during a full season using perceived wellness questionnaires and electronic performance and tracking systems.Results:The length of the microcycle had a significant effect on volume- and intensity-related external load variables. There were differences between short, regular, and long microcycles depending on the day of the microcycle. These differences were observed in all external load variables. However, no significant differences between short, regular, or long microcycles were found on match day for any external load variable, except for high-intensity decelerations. Regarding the perceived wellness, the length of the microcycle had no effect on these variables, and there were no significant interactions between the length and the day of the microcycle.Conclusion:The length of the microcycle had a significant effect on volume- and intensity-related external load variables, but no significant effect on perceived wellness was observed.Clinical Relevance:These data may help strength and conditioning coaches understand that workload periodization should take this contextual variable into account, especially for external training load. In addition, this study may serve as a guide for practitioners to know the physical requirements of professional soccer players in Spanish LaLiga Smartbank, because the weekly external load profile and perceived wellness have been reported for different lengths of the microcycles. Thus, these data may be used for player load management.

Abstract:Improving a cyclist performance during a time-trial effort has been a challenge for sport scientists for several decades. There has been a lot of work on understanding the physiological concepts behind it. The concepts of Critical Power (CP) and Anaerobic Work Capacity (AWC) have been discussed often in recent cycling performance related articles. CP is a power that can be maintained by a cyclist for a long time; meaning pedaling at or below this limit, theoretically, can be continued for infinite amount of time. However, there is a limited source of energy for generating power above CP. This limited energy source is AWC. After burning energy from this tank, a cyclist can recover some by pedaling below CP. In this paper we utilize the concepts of CP and AWC to mathematically model muscle fatigue and recovery of a cyclist. Then, the models are used to formulate an optimal control problem for a time trial effort on a 10.3 km course located in Greenville SC. The course is simulated in a laboratory environment using a CompuTrainer. At the end, the optimal simulation results are compared to the performance of one subject on CompuTrainer.

Abstract:In this holistic review of cycling science, the objectives are: (1) to identify the various human and environmental factors that influence cycling power output and velocity; (2) to discuss, with the aid of a schematic model, the often complex interrelationships between these factors; and (3) to suggest future directions for research to help clarify how cycling performance can be optimized, given different race disciplines, environments and riders. Most successful cyclists, irrespective of the race discipline, have a high maximal aerobic power output measured from an incremental test, and an ability to work at relatively high power outputs for long periods. The relationship between these characteristics and inherent physiological factors such as muscle capilliarization and muscle fibre type is complicated by inter-individual differences in selecting cadence for different race conditions. More research is needed on high-class professional riders, since they probably represent the pinnacle of natural selection for, and physiological adaptation to, endurance exercise. Recent advances in mathematical modelling and bicycle-mounted strain gauges, which can measure power directly in races, are starting to help unravel the interrelationships between the various resistive forces on the bicycle (e.g. air and rolling resistance, gravity). Interventions on rider position to optimize aerodynamics should also consider the impact on power output of the rider. All-terrain bicycle (ATB) racing is a neglected discipline in terms of the characterization of power outputs in race conditions and the modelling of the effects of the different design of bicycle frame and components on the magnitude of resistive forces. A direct application of mathematical models of cycling velocity has been in identifying optimal pacing strategies for different race conditions. Such data should, nevertheless, be considered alongside physiological optimization of power output in a race. An even distribution of power output is both physiologically and biophysically optimal for longer ( > 4 km) time-trials held in conditions of unvarying wind and gradient. For shorter races (e.g. a 1 km time-trial), an 'all out' effort from the start is advised to 'save' time during the initial phase that contributes most to total race time and to optimize the contribution of kinetic energy to race velocity. From a biophysical standpoint, the optimum pacing strategy for road time-trials may involve increasing power in headwinds and uphill sections and decreasing power in tailwinds and when travelling downhill. More research, using models and direct power measurement, is needed to elucidate fully how much such a pacing strategy might save time in a real race and how much a variable power output can be tolerated by a rider. The cyclist's diet is a multifactorial issue in itself and many researchers have tried to examine aspects of cycling nutrition (e.g. timing, amount, composition) in isolation. Only recently have researchers attempted to analyse interrelationships between dietary factors (e.g. the link between pre-race and in-race dietary effects on performance). The thermal environment is a mediating factor in choice of diet, since there may be competing interests of replacing lost fluid and depleted glycogen during and after a race. Given the prevalence of stage racing in professional cycling, more research into the influence of nutrition on repeated bouts of exercise performance and training is required.

Abstract:Optimising cadence through appropriate gear selection is a key consideration for track sprint cycling performance, yet the influence of cadence on fatigue (i.e., decrement in power output) within a maximal sprint is not well understood. The aim of this study was to identify the influence of cadence on fatigue during maximal sprint cycling. Eleven world-class and elite track sprint cyclists ( n = 6 men, maximal power output (P max ) = 1894 ± 351 W, optimal cadence (F opt ) = 134 ± 8 rev∙min −1 : n = 5 women, P max = 1114 ± 80 W, F opt = 124 ± 8 rev∙min −1 ) completed two testing sessions where power-cadence profiles were constructed to determine the F opt associated with P max . Cyclists also performed three maximal 15-s sprints (F opt , ±15%F opt ) to identify fatigue per pedal stroke across these cadence ranges. There was no significant difference ( p = 0.2) in the absolute fatigue per pedal stroke when cadence was fixed 15% above (16.7 ± 6.1 W∙stroke −1 ) and below (15.3 ± 5.1 W∙stroke −1 ) F opt . Similarly, there was no significant difference in the relative fatigue per pedal stroke (% peak power∙stroke −1 ) across F opt and ± 15%F opt trials ( p = 0.12). The relative decrement in power output is equivalent across the ± 15%F opt cadence range. As such, a higher-geared, lower-cadence approach to maximal sprint cycling could be a viable method to minimise maximal pedal strokes and reduce the decrement in power output.

Abstract:BACKGROUND:Previous studies suggest that the rating of perceived exertion (RPE) increases during steady-state, open-loop exercise in proportion to the relative time to fatigue. This suggests that RPE is scalar and integrates physiological status and homeostatic disturbances.PURPOSE:This study assessed the relationship between the rate of change in RPE, and relative distance in time trials at distances of 2.5, 5, and 10 km. It also assessed the rate of change in RPE during 5-km time trials while breathing hypoxic air.METHODS:The subjects were well-conditioned cyclists. In part 1, each subject completed habituation time trials, and then randomly ordered time trials at each distance. The category ratio RPE was measured in 10% increments throughout each trial. In part 2, each subject completed three 5-km time trials while breathing different inspired gas mixtures (FiO2 = 0.2093 throughout the trial, FiO2 = 0.15 between 2 and 4 km, and FiO2 = 0.15 between 2.5 and 4 km). RPE was measured at 10% increments.RESULTS:In part 1, when RPE was plotted against relative distance, there was no significant difference in the growth of RPE at proportional distances. In part 2, the decrease in power output during the hypoxic segments was sufficient that the growth of RPE was the same at each proportional distance. In both parts of the study, an RPE of 5 (hard) was achieved after 20% of the time trial distance, and an RPE of 8 was achieved after 80% distance.CONCLUSIONS:This study supports the hypothesis that RPE increases similarly in relation to relative distance, regardless of the distance performed, and it suggests that the perception of effort has scalar properties.

Abstract:Abstract Introduction The aim of this study was to examine the capacity of professional cyclists to recover between daily race stages while competing in the 2022 editions of the Tour de France and Tour de France Femmes. Methods The 17 participating cyclists were 8 males from a single team (aged 28.0yr) and 9 females from two separate teams (aged 26.7yr). Throughout the events, the cyclists wore a wrist-worn monitor (WHOOP 4.0) to capture recovery metrics related to sleep (quantity/quality) and autonomic activity (heart rate and heart rate variability). The primary analyses tested for a main effect of ‘day type’ – i.e., rest, flat, hilly, mountain or time trial for males; and flat, hilly or mountain for females – on the various recovery metrics. Results During their respective events, males obtained an average of 7.2(±0.1)h sleep each night, with sleep efficiency of 86.4(±1.2)%; and females obtained an average of 7.5(±0.3)h sleep each night, with sleep efficiency of 89.6(±1.2)%. For males, there was a main effect of ‘day type’ on recovery, such that heart rate variability during sleep was lowest after mountain stages. For females, there was a main effect of ‘day type’ on recovery, such that the percentage of light sleep in a sleep period (i.e., lower-quality sleep) was highest after mountain stages. Discussion Some aspects of recovery were compromised in cyclists after the most demanding days of racing, i.e., mountain stages. Overall however, the cyclists obtained a reasonable amount of good-quality sleep while competing in these highly demanding endurance events.

Abstract:Abstract Background Ultra-endurance events are gaining popularity in multiple exercise disciplines, including cycling. With increasing numbers of ultra-cycling events, aspects influencing participation and performance are of interest to the cycling community. Main body The aim of this narrative review was, therefore, to assess the types of races offered, the characteristics of the cyclists, the fluid and energy balance during the race, the body mass changes after the race, and the parameters that may enhance performance based on existing literature. A literature search was conducted in PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar using the search terms ‘ultracycling’, ‘ultra cycling’, ‘ultra-cycling’, ‘ultra-endurance biking’, ‘ultra-bikers’ and ‘prolonged cycling’. The search yielded 948 results, of which 111 were relevant for this review. The studies were classified according to their research focus and the results were summarized. The results demonstrated changes in physiological parameters, immunological and oxidative processes, as well as in fluid and energy balance. While the individual race with the most published studies was the Race Across America, most races were conducted in Europe, and a trend for an increase in European participants in international races was observed. Performance seems to be affected by characteristics such as age and sex but not by anthropometric parameters such as skin fold thickness. The optimum age for the top performance was around 40 years. Most participants in ultra-cycling events were male, but the number of female athletes has been increasing over the past years. Female athletes are understudied due to their later entry and less prominent participation in ultra-cycling races. A post-race energy deficit after ultra-cycling events was observed. Conclusion Future studies need to investigate the causes for the observed optimum race age around 40 years of age as well as the optimum nutritional supply to close the observed energy gap under consideration of the individual race lengths and conditions. Another research gap to be filled by future studies is the development of strategies to tackle inflammatory processes during the race that may persist in the post-race period.

Exploratory analysis of cumulative fatigue derived from volume and intensity indicators in stage races of professional cycling

Abstract:Objective: Here, we discuss cumulative fatigue based on volume and power output from 12 professional male cyclists during two consecutive editions of the Giro d'Italia. Methods: Volume and power output were recorded and described according to time at different intensity zones based on power output (Z0 lower to Z7 higher). Correlations, principal component analysis (PCA), Gaussian clustering, and two-way ANOVA were performed (type error I of 5%). Results: The higher intensity zones elicited higher power output in those shorter stages (R2 = 0.54). In contrast, the lower intensity zones were predominant in longer stages. The time spent in Z1 to Z3 (r = 0.67, 0.84, and 0.73) correlated more with stage's volume duration than time in Z4 to Z7 (r = 0.48, 0.44, and 0.51, and 0.38). The normalized volume declined between stages 2 to 4, 8 to 10, 13 to 15, and 18 to 19. Negative slopes of time spent in Z4 and Z6 occurred one or two stages before Z1 presented negative slopes. In contrast, positive slopes of higher intensity zones were observed with a negative slope of Z1. Different clusters distributions of time volume to complete the grand tour were found (p<0.05). Finally, average power in Z1, Z2, Z3, Z4, Z5, Z6, and Z7 explained 63.62%, 18.20%, 8.12%, 5.84%, 2.98%, 1.20%, and 0.02% of the total variance in the normalized time volume, respectively. Volume and power zone data can recognize cumulative fatigue and performance recovery during a grand tour. Rest days favored the performance recovery, mostly the second rest day.

Interactive processes link the multiple symptoms of fatigue in sport competition

Abstract:Muscle physiologists often describe fatigue simply as a decline of muscle force and infer this causes an athlete to slow down. In contrast, exercise scientists describe fatigue during sport competition more holistically as an exercise-induced impairment of performance. The aim of this review is to reconcile the different views by evaluating the many performance symptoms/measures and mechanisms of fatigue. We describe how fatigue is assessed with muscle, exercise or competition performance measures. Muscle performance (single muscle test measures) declines due to peripheral fatigue (reduced muscle cell force) and/or central fatigue (reduced motor drive from the CNS). Peak muscle force seldom falls by >30% during sport but is often exacerbated during electrical stimulation and laboratory exercise tasks. Exercise performance (whole-body exercise test measures) reveals impaired physical/technical abilities and subjective fatigue sensations. Exercise intensity is initially sustained by recruitment of new motor units and help from synergistic muscles before it declines. Technique/motor skill execution deviates as exercise proceeds to maintain outcomes before they deteriorate, e.g. reduced accuracy or velocity. The sensation of fatigue incorporates an elevated rating of perceived exertion (RPE) during submaximal tasks, due to a combination of peripheral and higher CNS inputs. Competition performance (sport symptoms) is affected more by decision-making and psychological aspects, since there are opponents and a greater importance on the result. Laboratory based decision making is generally faster or unimpaired. Motivation, self-efficacy and anxiety can change during exercise to modify RPE and, hence, alter physical performance. Symptoms of fatigue during racing, team-game or racquet sports are largely anecdotal, but sometimes assessed with time-motion analysis. Fatigue during brief all-out racing is described biomechanically as a decline of peak velocity, along with altered kinematic components. Longer sport events involve pacing strategies, central and peripheral fatigue contributions and elevated RPE. During match play, the work rate can decline late in a match (or tournament) and/or transiently after intense exercise bursts. Repeated sprint ability, agility and leg strength become slightly impaired. Technique outcomes, such as velocity and accuracy for throwing, passing, hitting and kicking, can deteriorate. Physical and subjective changes are both less severe in real rather than simulated sport activities. Little objective evidence exists to support exercise-induced mental lapses during sport. A model depicting mind-body interactions during sport competition shows that the RPE centre-motor cortex-working muscle sequence drives overall performance levels and, hence, fatigue symptoms. The sporting outputs from this sequence can be modulated by interactions with muscle afferent and circulatory feedback, psychological and decision-making inputs. Importantly, compensatory processes exist at many levels to protect against performance decrements. Small changes of putative fatigue factors can also be protective. We show that individual fatigue factors including diminished carbohydrate availability, elevated serotonin, hypoxia, acidosis, hyperkalaemia, hyperthermia, dehydration and reactive oxygen species, each contribute to several fatigue symptoms. Thus, multiple symptoms of fatigue can occur simultaneously and the underlying mechanisms overlap and interact. Based on this understanding, we reinforce the proposal that fatigue is best described globally as an exercise-induced decline of performance as this is inclusive of all viewpoints.
Physiological and Biomechanical Determinants of Sprint Ability Following Variable Intensity Exercise When Roller Ski Skating

Abstract:The most common race format in cross-country (XC) skiing is the mass-start event, which is under-explored in the scientific literature. To explore factors important for XC skiing mass-starts, the main purpose of this study was to investigate physiological and biomechanical determinants of sprint ability following variable intensity exercise when roller ski skating. Thirteen elite male XC skiers performed a simulated mass-start competition while roller ski skating on a treadmill. The protocol consisted of an initial 21-min bout with a varying track profile, designed as a competition track with preset inclines and speeds, directly followed by an all-out sprint (AOS) with gradually increased speed to rank their performance. The initial part was projected to simulate the “stay-in-the-group” condition during a mass-start, while the AOS was designed to assess the residual physiological capacities required to perform well during the final part of a mass-start race. Cardiorespiratory variables, kinematics and pole forces were measured continuously, and the cycles were automatically detected and classified into skating sub-techniques through a machine learning model. Better performance ranking was associated with higher VO 2 Max ( r = 0.68) and gross efficiency ( r = 0.70) measured on separate days, as well as the ability to ski on a lower relative intensity [i.e., %HR Max ( r = 0.87), %VO 2 Max ( r = 0.89), and rating of perceived exertion ( r = 0.73)] during the initial 21-min of the simulated mass-start (all p -values < 0.05). Accordingly, the ability to increase HR ( r = 0.76) and VO 2 ( r = 0.72), beyond the corresponding values achieved during the initial 21-min, in the AOS correlated positively with performance (both p < 0.05). In addition, greater utilization of the G3 sub-technique in the steepest uphill ( r = 0.69, p < 0.05), as well as a trend for longer cycle lengths (CLs) during the AOS ( r = 0.52, p = 0.07), were associated with performance. In conclusion, VO 2 Max and gross efficiency were the most significant performance-determining variables of simulated mass-start performance, enabling lower relative intensity and less accumulation of fatigue before entering the final AOS. Subsequently, better performance ranking was associated with more utilization of the demanding G3 sub-technique in the steepest uphill, and physiological reserves allowing better-performing skiers to utilize a larger portion of their aerobic potential and achieve longer CLs and higher speed during the AOS.

Abstract:̇VO2max and best performance times (BPTs) obtained during maximal voluntary trials over 1, 2, 5, and 10 km from a stationary start were assessed in 10 elite cyclists. Steadystate ̇VO2 and peak blood lactate concentration ([La]b) were also determined in the same subjects pedaling on a track at constant submaximal speeds. The energy cost of cycling(Cc, J·m-1) was calculated as the ratio of ̇VO2, corrected for glycolytic energy production and expressed in W, to v (m·s-1). Individual relationships between Cc and v were described by: Cc = Ccrr + k′ v2 where Ccrr is the energy spent against friction and k′ v2 is that spent against drag. Overall energy cost of cycling (Cctot) was obtained, adding to Cc the energy spent to accelerate the total moving mass from a stationary start. Individual theoretical BPTs were then calculated and compared with the actual ones as follows. The maximal metabolic power sustained at a constant level by a given subject (Ėmax, W) is a known function of the exhaustion time (te). It depends on his ̇VO2max and maximal anaerobic capacity; it was obtained from individual ̇VO2max and [La]b values. The metabolic power(Ėc, W) necessary to cover any given distance (d) is a known function of the performance time over d (td); it is given byĖc = Cctot v = Cctot d td-. For all subjects and distances, the t values solving the equalities Ėmax F(te) = Ėc F(td) were calculated and assumed to yield theoretical BPTs. The model that makes this possible is discussed in detail in(25) and is summarized in theAppendix of this paper. In summary, the energy cost (C) represents the amount of energy required above resting to transport the runner's body over one unit of distance and that the maximal metabolic power(Ėmax) is inclusive of the fraction derived from anaerobic energy stores utilization. The aim of the present paper was to test the accuracy of the same model when applying it to track cycling, that is, to a type of locomotion whose energy cost (at variance with running) increases with speed. Hence we measuredĖmax and the overall energy cost of track cycling (Cctot) as a function of the speed in a group of young, high level cyclists. This made it possible to calculate the theoretical best performance times over the distances of 1, 2, 5, and 10 km. The theoretical values were finally compared to the actual times measured during coeval racing trials over the same distances. MATERIALS AND METHODS Subjects. Ten male subjects, whose main physiologic and anthropometric characteristics are reported in Table 1, participated in the study. Two of 10 were professional road cyclists (L. N. and D. R.), whereas the others were competing in national-level amateur road races. The study was performed after the end of the racing season; however, the athletes maintained their usual training intensity during the entire period of the experiments. The subjects were thoroughly informed about the aims and details of the experimental protocol, which was approved by the Ethical Committee of the School of Medicine of the University of Udine, and were asked to sign an informed consent.

The Night-Time Sleep and Autonomic Activity of Male and Female Professional Road Cyclists Competing in the Tour de France and Tour de France Femmes

Abstract:Abstract Background Sleep is a critical component of recovery, but it can be disrupted following prolonged endurance exercise. The objective of this study was to examine the capacity of male and female professional cyclists to recover between daily race stages while competing in the 2022 Tour de France and the 2022 Tour de France Femmes, respectively. The 17 participating cyclists (8 males from a single team and 9 females from two teams) wore a fitness tracker (WHOOP 4.0) to capture recovery metrics related to night-time sleep and autonomic activity for the entirety of the events and for 7 days of baseline before the events. The primary analyses tested for a main effect of ‘stage classification’—i.e., rest, flat, hilly, mountain or time trial for males and flat, hilly or mountain for females—on the various recovery metrics. Results During baseline, total sleep time was 7.2 ± 0.3 h for male cyclists (mean ± 95% confidence interval) and 7.7 ± 0.3 h for female cyclists, sleep efficiency was 87.0 ± 4.4% for males and 88.8 ± 2.6% for females, resting HR was 41.8 ± 4.5 beats·min −1 for males and 45.8 ± 4.9 beats·min −1 for females, and heart rate variability during sleep was 108.5 ± 17.0 ms for males and 119.8 ± 26.4 ms for females. During their respective events, total sleep time was 7.2 ± 0.1 h for males and 7.5 ± 0.3 h for females, sleep efficiency was 86.4 ± 1.2% for males and 89.6 ± 1.2% for females, resting HR was 44.5 ± 1.2 beats·min −1 for males and 50.2 ± 2.0 beats·min −1 for females, and heart rate variability during sleep was 99.1 ± 4.2 ms for males and 114.3 ± 11.2 ms for females. For male cyclists, there was a main effect of ‘stage classification’ on recovery, such that heart rate variability during sleep was lowest after mountain stages. For female cyclists, there was a main effect of ‘stage classification’ on recovery, such that the percentage of light sleep (i.e., lower-quality sleep) was highest after mountain stages. Conclusions Some aspects of recovery were compromised after the most demanding days of racing, i.e., mountain stages. Overall however, the cyclists obtained a reasonable amount of good-quality sleep while competing in these physiologically demanding endurance events. This study demonstrates that it is now feasible to assess recovery in professional athletes during multiple-day endurance events using validated fitness trackers.

Abstract:We examined peripheral versus central contributions to fatigue in men and women during prolonged cycling using a peripheral nerve magnetic stimulation-based technique. 11 men (41 ± 3 years) and 9 women (38 ± 2 years) cycled for 2 h at ventilatory threshold with 5, 1-min sprints interspersed, followed by a 3-km time trial. Quadriceps strength testing was performed isometrically in a semi-reclined position pre- and post-cycling: (1) MVC; (2) MVC with superimposed 3-s magnetic stimulation to measure central activation ratio (CAR), a measure of central fatigue; (3) peripheral magnetic stimulation (PMS) alone of the femoral nerve in a 4-s pulse train, a measure of peripheral fatigue. Data were analyzed with mixed model ANOVA. When adjusted for body mass, men and women had similar strength (p = 0.876), and changes in MVC with time were similar between sexes, declining 22 % in men and 16 % in women (p = 0.360). CAR was similar between sexes and decreased 15 % (effect of time, p < 0.001). Changes in PMS-elicited force were different between sexes: only men lost stimulated strength (6.30 to 5.21 vs. 5.48 to 5.53 N kg(-1), interaction p = 0.036). Results clearly demonstrate that quadriceps fatigue after >2 h of cycling was of both central and peripheral origin in men but solely due to central mechanisms in women.

Abstract:We aimed to analyze the effect of a head‐to‐head virtual race on 20‐km time trial performance in well‐trained mentally fatigued cyclists. A total of 24 male professional cyclists participated in the present study, which was conducted in a within‐factors design [four experimental conditions × four times (throughout 20‐km time trial cycling)]. An avatar representing the participant on the racecourse was visible during the time trials. Then, a second virtual avatar representing the opponent was projected onto the screen in the mental fatigue head‐to‐head and control head‐to‐head experimental conditions. Abstract:Introduction: Prolonged and repeated exercise performed during an ultra-endurance event can induce general and cardiac fatigue known as exercise-induced cardiac fatigue. Our objective was to find a possible correlation between the cardiac function and the autonomic cardiac function. Methods: During a multistage ultra-endurance event, a female well-trained cyclist underwent daily rest echocardiography and heart rate variability measurements to assess the cardiac function and the cardiac autonomic function. Results: The athlete completed 3,345 km at 65% of her maximum heart rate and 39% of her maximum aerobic power. A progressive improvement of the systolic function for both the left ventricle and the right ventricle was observed during the event. Discussion: Alterations were observed on the cardiac autonomic function with an imbalance between sympathetic and parasympathetic, but there was no sign of a significant correlation between the cardiac function and the autonomic cardiac function and no signs of cardiac fatigue either. Further analysis should be performed on a larger sample to confirm the obtained results.

Abstract:Purpose: We examined the effect of race-effort cycling exercise with and without heat stress on post-exercise perceptions of fatigue and pain, as well as mRNA expression in genes related to exercise responses. Methods: Trained cyclists (n = 20) completed 40 km time trials during temperate (TC, 21 °C) and hot (HC, 35 °C) conditions. Blood lactates were measured 1 and 5 min post-exercise. Venous blood samples and ratings of fatigue and pain perceptions were obtained at baseline and at 0.5, 8, 24, and 48 h post-exercise. Leukocyte mRNA expression was performed for metabolite detecting, adrenergic, monoamine, and immune receptors using qPCR. Results: Significantly lower mean power (157 ± 32.3 vs 187 ± 40 W) and lactates (6.4 ± 1.7 vs 8.8 ± 3.2 and 4.2 ± 1.5 vs 6.6 ± 2.7 mmol L(-1) at 1- and 5-min post-exercise) were observed for HC versus TC, respectively (p < 0.05). Increases (p < 0.05) in physical fatigue and pain perception during TTs did not differ between TC and HC (p > 0.30). Both trials resulted in significant post-exercise decreases in metabolite detecting receptors ASIC3, P2X4, TRPV1, and TRPV4; increases in adrenergic receptors α2a, α2c, and β1; decreases in adrenergic β2, the immune receptor TLR4, and dopamine (DRD4); and increases in serotonin (HTR1D) and IL-10 (p < 0.05). Post-exercise IL-6 differed between TC and HC, with significantly greater increases observed following HC (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Both TT performances appeared to be regulated around a specific sensory perception of fatigue and pain. Heat stress may have compensated for lower lactate during HC, thereby matching changes in metabolite detecting and other mRNAs across conditions.
