Abstract:We analyze zero-lag and cluster synchrony of delay-coupled nonsmooth dynamical systems by extending the master stability approach, and apply this to networks of adaptive threshold-model neurons. For a homogeneous population of excitatory and inhibitory neurons we find (i) that subthreshold adaptation stabilizes or destabilizes synchrony depending on whether the recurrent synaptic excitatory or inhibitory couplings dominate, and (ii) that synchrony is always unstable for networks with balanced recurrent synaptic inputs. If couplings are not too strong, synchronization properties are similar for very different coupling topologies, i.e., random connections or spatial networks with localized connectivity. We generalize our approach for two subpopulations of neurons with nonidentical local dynamics, including bursting, for which activity-based adaptation controls the stability of cluster states, independent of a specific coupling topology.

Abstract:The problem of adaptive synchronization is considered for stochastic delayed neural networks with Markovian switching and Lévy noise. The aim of the problem is to derive a sufficient condition and an adaptive control strategy such that the synchronization can be achieved for the master system and the slave system. By generalized Itô׳s formula and Lyapunov functional method, a sufficient condition in terms of LMI is established to ensure the synchronization of the two systems, and the adaptive update law is determined as well. A numerical simulation is provided to verify the usefulness of the proposed criterion.
Continuum limit of the adaptive Kuramoto model

Abstract:We investigate the dynamics of the adaptive Kuramoto model in the continuum limit with slow adaptation. This model is distinguished by dense multistability, where multiple states coexist for the same system parameters. The underlying cause of this multistability is that some oscillators can lock at different phases or switch between locking and drifting depending on their initial conditions. We identify new states, such as two-cluster states. To simplify the analysis we introduce an approximate reduction of the model via row-averaging of the coupling matrix. We derive a self-consistency equation for the reduced model and present a stability diagram illustrating the effects of positive and negative adaptation. Our theoretical findings are validated through numerical simulations of a large finite system. Comparisons to previous work highlight the significant influence of adaptation on synchronization behavior.

Abstract:A class of adaptation functions is found for which a synchronous mode with different number of phase clusters exists in a network of phase oscillators with triadic couplings. This mode is implemented in a fairly wide range of initial conditions and the maximum number of phase clusters is four. The joint influence of coupling strength and adaptation parameters on synchronization in the network has been studied. The desynchronization transition under variation of the adaptation parameter occurs abruptly and begins with the highest-frequency oscillator, spreading hierarchically to all other elements.

Abstract:Synaptic plasticity is a key component of neuronal dynamics, describing the process by which the connections between neurons change in response to experiences. In this study, we extend a network model of $\theta$-neuron oscillators to include a realistic form of adaptive plasticity. In place of the less tractable spike-timing-dependent plasticity, we employ recently validated phase-difference-dependent plasticity rules, which adjust coupling strengths based on the relative phases of $\theta$-neuron oscillators. We investigate two approaches for implementing this plasticity: pairwise coupling strength updates and global coupling strength updates. A mean-field approximation of the system is derived and we investigate its validity through comparison with the $\theta$-neuron simulations across various stability states. The synchrony of the system is examined using the Kuramoto order parameter. A bifurcation analysis, by means of numerical continuation and the calculation of maximal Lyapunov exponents, reveals interesting phenomena, including bistability and evidence of period-doubling and boundary crisis routes to chaos, that would otherwise not exist in the absence of adaptive coupling.

Abstract:We consider an adaptive network of identical phase oscillators with the symmetric adaptation rule for the evolution of the connection weights under the influence of an external force. We show that the adaptive network exhibits a plethora of self-organizing dynamical states such as the two-cluster state, multiantipodal clusters, splay cluster, splay chimera, forced entrained state, chimera state, bump state, coherent, and incoherent states in the two-parameter phase diagrams. The intriguing structures of the frequency clusters and instantaneous phases of the oscillators characterize the distinct self-organized synchronized and partial synchronized states. The hierarchical organization of the frequency clusters, resulting in strongly coupled subnetworks, is also evident from the dynamics of the coupling weights, where the frequency clusters are either very weakly coupled or even completely decoupled from each other. Abstract:Cluster synchronization is a fundamental phenomenon in systems of coupled oscillators. Here, we investigate clustering patterns that emerge in a unidirectional ring of four delay-coupled electrochemical oscillators. A voltage parameter in the experimental set-up controls the onset of oscillations via a Hopf bifurcation. For a smaller voltage, the oscillators exhibit simple, so-called primary, clustering patterns, where all phase differences between each set of coupled oscillators are identical. However, upon increasing the voltage, additional secondary states, where phase differences differ, are detected. Previous work on this system saw the development of a mathematical model that explains how the existence, stability, and common frequency of the experimentally observed cluster states can be accurately controlled by the delay time of the coupling. In this study, we revisit the mathematical model of the electrochemical oscillators to address open questions by means of bifurcation analysis. Our analysis reveals how the stable cluster states, corresponding to experimental observations, lose their stability via an assortment of bifurcation types. The analysis further reveals a complex interconnectedness between branches of different cluster types; in particular, we find that each secondary state provides a continuous transition between certain primary states. These connections are explained by studying the phase space and parameter symmetries of the respective states. Furthermore, we show that it is only for a larger value of the voltage parameter that the branches of secondary states develop intervals of stability. Otherwise, for a smaller voltage, all the branches of secondary states are completely unstable and therefore hidden to experimentalists.

Abstract:Synchronization control of a time-varying complex dynamical network model is investigated.We assume that the synchronous trajectories,entries of the coupling configuration matrix and inner-coupling matrix of the model are all bounded.When those bounds are a priori known or uncertain,a linear feedback scheme and an adaptive scheme are applied to globally synchronize the network respectively.By constructing the adequate Lyapunov function,we can always let a dynamical network,no matter how it is initialized,achieve asymptotic synchronization under the corresponding control scheme.In particular,the proposed adaptive control scheme shows a high robustness to the uncertainties in topological structure of network,coupling strength between nodes,time delays,etc.Numerical simulations validate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Abstract:We have studied the spatiotemporal behaviour of threshold coupled chaotic neurons. We observe that the chaos is controlled by threshold activated coupling, and the system yields synchronized temporally periodic states under the threshold response. Varying the frequency of thresholding provides different higher order periodic behaviors, and can serve as a simple mechanism for stabilising a large range of regular temporal patterns in chaotic systems. Further, we have obtained a transition from spatiotemporal chaos to fixed spatiotemporal profiles, by lengthening the relaxation time scale.

Abstract:Networks of coupled dynamical units give rise to collective dynamics such as the synchronization of oscillators or neurons in the brain. The ability of the network to adapt coupling strengths between units in accordance with their activity arises naturally in a variety of contexts, including neural plasticity in the brain, and adds an additional layer of complexity: the dynamics on the nodes influence the dynamics of the network and vice versa. We study a minimal model of Kuramoto phase oscillators including a general adaptive learning rule with three parameters (strength of adaptivity, adaptivity offset, adaptivity shift), mimicking learning paradigms based on spike-time-dependent-plasticity (STDP). Importantly, the strength of adaptivity allows to tune the system away away from the limit of the classical Kuramoto model, corresponding to stationary coupling strengths and no adaptation, and thus, to systematically study the impact of adaptivity on the collective dynamics. We carry out a detailed bifurcation analysis for the minimal model consisting of N = 2 oscillators. The non-adaptive Kuramoto model exhibits very simple dynamic behavior, drift or frequency-locking; but once the strength of adaptivity exceeds a critical threshold non-trivial bifurcation structures unravel: A symmetric adaptation rule results in multi-stability and bifurcation scenarios, and an asymmetric adaptation rule generates even more intriguing and rich dynamics, including a period doubling-cascade to chaos as well as oscillations displaying features of both librations and rotations simultaneously. Generally, adaptation improves the synchronizability of the oscillators. Finally, we also numerically investigate a larger system consisting of N = 50 oscillators and compare the resulting dynamics with the case of N = 2 oscillators.

Abstract:We investigate the interplay of an external forcing and an adaptive network, whose connection weights coevolve with the dynamical states of the phase oscillators. In particular, we consider the Hebbian and anti-Hebbian adaptation mechanisms for the evolution of the connection weights. The Hebbian adaptation manifests several interesting partially synchronized states, such as phase and frequency clusters, bump state, bump frequency phase clusters, and forced entrained clusters, in addition to the completely synchronized and forced entrained states. Anti-Hebbian adaptation facilitates the manifestation of the itinerant chimera characterized by randomly evolving coherent and incoherent domains along with some of the aforementioned dynamical states induced by the Hebbian adaptation. We introduce three distinct measures for the strength of incoherence based on the local standard deviations of the time-averaged frequency and the instantaneous phase of each oscillator, and the time-averaged mean frequency for each bin to corroborate the distinct dynamical states and to demarcate the two parameter phase diagrams. Abstract:In this paper, we consider cluster synchronization in an uncertain generic neural network. The network is composed of many interactional clusters, including inner couplings in each cluster and outer couplings between different clusters. For the neural network, the dynamics of each cluster can be unknown and different. The coupling functions including uniform and nonuniform couplings between clusters can be unknown, too. By adding some time-varying linear and negative feedback controllers, we can guarantee that every cluster will synchronize at an arbitrary pre-assigned state/orbit of an isolated cluster of the network. Numerical simulations are presented to show the validity of the theoretical results.

Abstract:This article introduces an adaptive control scheme with a feedback delay, specifically designed for controlling partial networks, to achieve desynchronization in a coupled network with two or multiple clusters. The proposed scheme's effectiveness is validated through several representative examples of coupled neuronal networks with two interconnected clusters. The efficacy of this scheme is attributed to the rigorous and numerical analyses on the corresponding transcendental characteristic equation, which includes time delay and other network parameters. In addition to investigating the impact of time delay and inter-connectivity on the stability of an incoherent state, we also rigorously find that controlling only one cluster cannot realize the desynchronization in the coupled oscillators within three or more clusters. All these, we believe, can deepen the understanding of the deep brain stimulation techniques presently used in the clinical treatment of neurodegenerative diseases and suggest future avenues for enhancing these clinical techniques through adaptive feedback settings.

Abstract:In this paper, a network of interacting neurons based on a two-component system of reaction-superdiffusion equations with fractional Laplace operator responsible for the coupling configuration and nonlinear functions of the Hindmarsh-Rose model is considered. The process of synchronization transition in the space of the fractional Laplace operator exponents is studied. This parametric space contains information about both the local interaction strength and the asymptotics of the long-range couplings for both components of the system under consideration. It is shown that in addition to the homogeneous transition, there are regions of inhomogeneous synchronization transition in the space of the fractional Laplace operator exponents. Weak changes of the corresponding exponents in inhomogeneous zones are associated with the significant restructuring of the dynamic modes in the system. The parametric regions of chimera states, solitary states, phase waves, as well as dynamical modes combining them, are determined. The development of filamentary structures associated with the manifestation of different partial synchronization modes has been detected. In view of the demonstrated link between changes in network topology and internal dynamics, the data obtained in this study may be useful for neuroscience tasks. The approaches used in this study can be applied to a wide range of natural science disciplines.

Abstract:Natural and technological networks exhibit dynamics that can lead to complex cooperative behaviors, such as synchronization in coupled oscillators and rhythmic activity in neuronal networks. Understanding these collective dynamics is crucial for deciphering a range of phenomena from brain activity to power grid stability. Recent interest in co-evolutionary networks has highlighted the intricate interplay between dynamics on and of the network with mixed time scales. Here, we explore the collective behavior of excitable oscillators in a simple networks of two Theta neurons with adaptive coupling without self-interaction. Through a combination of bifurcation analysis and numerical simulations, we seek to understand how the level of adaptivity in the coupling strength, $a$, influences the dynamics. We first investigate the dynamics possible in the non-adaptive limit; our bifurcation analysis reveals stability regions of quiescence and spiking behaviors, where the spiking frequencies mode-lock in a variety of configurations. Second, as we increase the adaptivity $a$, we observe a widening of the associated Arnol'd tongues, which may overlap and give room for multi-stable configurations. For larger adaptivity, the mode-locked regions may further undergo a period-doubling cascade into chaos. Our findings contribute to the mathematical theory of adaptive networks and offer insights into the potential mechanisms underlying neuronal communication and synchronization.

Abstract:Adaptive dynamical networks are ubiquitous in real-world systems. This paper aims to explore the synchronization dynamics in networks of adaptive oscillators based on a paradigmatic system of adaptively coupled phase oscillators. Our numerical observations reveal the emergence of synchronization cluster bursting, characterized by periodic transitions between cluster synchronization and global synchronization. By investigating a reduced model, the mechanisms underlying synchronization cluster bursting are clarified. We show that a minimal model exhibiting this phenomenon can be reduced to a phase oscillator with complex-valued adaptation. Furthermore, the adaptivity of the system leads to the appearance of additional symmetries and thus to the coexistence of stable bursting solutions with very different Kuramoto order parameters.

Abstract:The dynamics of synaptic interactions within spiking neuron networks play a fundamental role in shaping emergent collective behavior. This paper studies a finite-size network of quadratic integrate-and-fire neurons interconnected via a general synaptic function that accounts for synaptic dynamics and time delays. Through asymptotic analysis, we transform this integrate-and-fire network into the Kuramoto-Sakaguchi model, whose parameters are explicitly expressed via synaptic function characteristics. This reduction yields analytical conditions on synaptic activation rates and time delays determining whether the synaptic coupling is attractive or repulsive. Our analysis reveals alternating stability regions for synchronous and partially synchronous firing, dependent on slow synaptic activation and time delay. We also demonstrate that the reduced microscopic model predicts the emergence of synchronization, weakly stable cyclops states, and non-stationary regimes remarkably well in the original integrate-and-fire network and its theta neuron counterpart. Our reduction approach promises to open the door to rigorous analysis of rhythmogenesis in networks with synaptic adaptation and plasticity.
Synchronous clusters in a noisy inhibitory neural network

Abstract:We study the stability and information encoding capacity of synchronized states in a neuronal network model that represents part of thalamic circuitry. Our model neurons have a Hodgkin-Huxley-type low threshold Calcium channel, display post inhibitory rebound, and are connected via GABAergic inhibitory synapses. We find that there is a threshold in synaptic strength, $\tau_c$, below which there are no stable spiking network states. Above threshold the stable spiking state is a cluster state, where different groups of neurons fire consecutively, and each neuron fires with the same cluster each time. Weak noise destabilizes this state, but stronger noise drives the system into a different, self-organized, stochastically synchronized state. Neuronal firing is still organized in clusters, but individual neurons can hop from cluster to cluster. Noise can actually induce and sustain such a state below the threshold of synaptic strength. We do find a qualitative difference in the firing patterns between small ($\sim 10$ neurons) and large ($\sim 1000$ neurons) networks. We determine the information content of the spike trains in terms of two separate contributions: the spike time jitter around cluster firing times, and the hopping from cluster to cluster. We quantify the information loss due to temporally correlated interspike intervals. Recent experiments on the locust olfactory system and striatal neurons suggest that the nervous system may actually use these two channels to encode separate and unique information.

Abstract:Summary The issues of cluster synchronization and state estimation for a class of nonlinear complex dynamical networks are concurrently focused in this study. In precise, led by the design of complex dynamical networks, a proportional integral‐based observer is implemented for achieving robustness, by the virtue of which the states of examined networks are estimated. Thereupon, a proportional integral observer‐based hybrid triggered control scheme is proposed, wherein, the switch‐over between time‐ and event‐ triggered scheme is governed through a Bernoulli distributed random variable. Further, with the application of mixed and passivity performance technique, the external disturbances for the addressed complex dynamical networks are reduced. Based on the Lyapunov stability theory, the requisite sufficient conditions in respect of linear matrix inequalities are provided which ensures the discussed complex dynamical network's synchronization phenomenon. In a further, the presented criteria are exploited for the attainment of required controller, proportional and integral gain matrices. In conclusion, the applicability of proposed results and efficacy of the undertaken strategy are evidently proven with the illustration of two numerical examples with Chua's circuit and Goodwin oscillator model.
