Abstract:Ultraflexible organic photovoltaics have emerged as a potential power source for wearable electronics owing to their stretchability and lightweight nature. However, waterproofing ultraflexible organic photovoltaics without compromising mechanical flexibility and conformability remains challenging. Here, we demonstrate waterproof and ultraflexible organic photovoltaics through the in-situ growth of a hole-transporting layer to strengthen interface adhesion between the active layer and anode. Specifically, a silver electrode is deposited directly on top of the active layers, followed by thermal annealing treatment. Compared with conventional sequentially-deposited hole-transporting layers, the in-situ grown hole-transporting layer exhibits higher thermodynamic adhesion between the active layers, resulting in better waterproofness. The fabricated 3 μm-thick organic photovoltaics retain 89% and 96% of their pristine performance after immersion in water for 4 h and 300 stretching/releasing cycles at 30% strain under water, respectively. Moreover, the ultraflexible devices withstand a machine-washing test with such a thin encapsulation layer, which has never been reported. Finally, we demonstrate the universality of the strategy for achieving waterproof solar cells.

Abstract:Textile-compatible photovoltaics play a crucial role as a continuous source of energy in wearable devices. In contrast to other types of energy harvester, they can harvest sufficient electricity (on the order of milliwatts) for wearable devices by utilizing the cloth itself as the platform for photovoltaics. Three features are important for textile-compatible photovoltaics, namely environmental stability, sufficient energy efficiency and mechanical robustness. However, achieving these simultaneously remains difficult because of the low gas barrier properties of ultrathin superstrates and substrates. Here, we report on ultraflexible organic photovoltaics coated on both sides with elastomer that simultaneously realize stretchability and stability in water whilst maintaining a high efficiency of 7.9%. The efficiency of double-side-coated devices decreases only by 5.4% after immersion in water for 120 min. Furthermore, the efficiency of the devices remains at 80% of the initial value even after 52% mechanical compression for 20 cycles with 100 min of water exposure.

Abstract:Organometallic halide perovskites are promising candidates for high-performance flexible perovskite solar cells (f-PSCs). However, f-PSCs still face significant challenges in the formation of uniform and highly crystalline films with mechanical robustness. Here, a zwitterion elastomer (SBMA) was introduced into a perovskite film. SBMA cross-linked in situ to regulate the nucleation and crystallization of the perovskite by forming an intermediate SBMA-PbI2 adduct. In addition, the polar sulfo-end group on SBMA offered chemical passivation to perovskite vacancies and created a large dielectric environment, screening the carrier capture process and suppressing nonradiative recombination. The zwitterionic fusion within the cross-linked elastomers, residing on grain boundaries, endowed the flexible perovskite films with instantaneous self-curing ability under mild treating conditions (40°C for 15 min). The resultant device achieved a record-breaking power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 24.51% (certified 24.04%) and demonstrated excellent mechanical sustainability and durability, retaining over 90% of the initial PCE after 10,000 bending cycles.

Abstract:Advanced photovoltaics, such as ultra-flexible perovskite solar cells (UF-PSCs), which are known for their lightweight design and high power-to-mass ratio, have been a long-standing goal that we, as humans, have continuously pursued. Unlike normal PSCs fabricated on rigid substrates, producing high-efficiency UF-PSCs remains a challenge due to the difficulty in achieving full coverage and minimizing defects of metal halide perovskite (MHP) films. In this study, we utilized Al2O3 nanoparticles (NPs) as an inorganic surface modifier to enhance the wettability and reduce the roughness of poly-bis(4-phenyl) (2,4,6-trimethylphenyl) amine simultaneously. This approach proves essentials in fabricating UF-PSCs, enabling the deposition of uniform and dense MHP films with full coverage and fewer defects. We systematically investigated the effect of Al2O3 NPs on film formation, combining simulation with experiments. Our strategy not only significantly increases the power conversion efficiency (PCE) from 11.96% to 16.33%, but also promotes reproducibility by effectively addressing the short circuit issue commonly encountered in UF-PSCs. Additionally, our UF-PSCs demonstrates good mechanical stability, maintaining 98.6% and 79.0% of their initial PCEs after 10,000 bending cycles with radii of 1.0 and 0.5 mm, respectively.

Abstract:Organic/inorganic hybrid perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have attracted wide attention mainly due to the rapid rise in their power conversion efficiency (PCE), but their long-term stability is now becoming an even more important issue given that the active perovskite material is moisture sensitive. Herein we report a hole-transporter-free PSC based on a C + epoxy electrode that can serve as both a hole-selective extractor and a water-rejecting barrier. After boosting with a silver paint coating, the whole device is not only efficient at similar to 11% but also waterproof. When immersed in water, no performance degradation occurred at the first 80 min. More impressively, when the cell stability was investigated in some harsh environments, e.g., high humidity and 50 degrees C thermal stressing, nearly no performance degradation was observed within the testing time span.

Abstract:Endured, low-cost, and high-performance flexible perovskite solar cells (PSCs) featuring lightweight and mechanical flexibility have attracted tremendous attention for portable power source applications. However, flexible PSCs typically use expensive and fragile indium-tin oxide as transparent anode and high-vacuum processed noble metal as cathode, resulting in dramatic performance degradation after continuous bending or thermal stress. Here, all-carbon-electrode-based flexible PSCs are fabricated employing graphene as transparent anode and carbon nanotubes as cathode. All-carbon-electrode-based flexible devices with and without spiro-OMeTAD (2,2,7,7-tetrakis-(N,N-di-p-methoxyphenylamine)-9,9-spirobifluorene) hole conductor achieve power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of 11.9% and 8.4%, respectively. The flexible carbon-electrode-based solar cells demonstrate superior robustness against mechanical deformation in comparison with their counterparts fabricated on flexible indium-tin oxide substrates. Moreover, all carbon-electrode-based flexible PSCs also show significantly enhanced stability compared to the flexible devices with gold and silver cathodes under continuous light soaking or 60 degrees C thermal stress in air, retaining over 90% of their original PCEs after 1000 h. The promising durability and stability highlight that flexible PSCs are fully compatible with carbon materials and pave the way toward the realization of rollable and low-cost flexible perovskite photovoltaic devices.

Abstract:Flexible perovskite solar cells (PSCs) are highly promising photovoltaic technologies due to the prospect of integration with wearable devices. However, conventional encapsulation strategies for flexible devices often cause secondary damage to the perovskite crystals, which affects device performance. Here, we present self-encapsulated flexible PSCs realized by lamination technology. The conversion of perovskite crystals is achieved by the diffusion of lead iodide and ammonium halide under the effect of temperature and pressure. In addition, the hydrogen bonding of the introduced polyacrylamide enhances the connections of the integral device while improving the crystal quality. The self-encapsulated flexible PSCs achieve an outstanding photovoltaic conversion efficiency of 22.33%, and comprehensive stability tests are conducted based on wearable device application scenarios to verify the feasibility. Finally, 25 cm<sup>2</sup> wearable perovskite modules are successfully applied into the neuro-assisted wearable devices.

Abstract:Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) are being rapidly developed at a fiery stage due to their marvelous and fast-growing power conversion efficiency (PCE). Advantages such as high PCE, solution processability, tunable band gaps, and flexibility make PSCs one of the research hot spots in the energy field. Flexible PSCs (f-PSCs) owing to high power-to-weight ratios can be promising candidates to serve as power sources in mobile energy systems, space energy systems, portable functional devices, and so on. Herein, we give a review on recent progress in f-PSCs involving flexible substrates and flexible transparent electrodes, performance enhancement by optimizing functional layers, large-scale fabrication techniques, flexibility promotion strategies, and their potential applications. Abstract:In order to improve the performance of flexible perovskite solar cells (F‐PSCs), this work proposes the inner encapsulation strategy to heal the surface defects of perovskite film and prevent moisture invasion. F‐PSCs with high efficiency in outdoor/indoor scenes and considerable long‐term stability are achieved. This work sheds new light on fabricating the highly‐efficient and stable F‐PSCs. Flexible perovskite solar cells possess huge application potential in both outdoor (sunlight) and indoor scenes (artificial low light) owing to their high optoelectronic conversion efficiency and agile integration advantages. In order to further establish their feasibility to meet multi‐scenario applications, here a facile "internal packaging" interface strategy is developed, where a selective light‐cured cross‐linking molecule is leveraged to effectively heal the interface defects over perovskite films. Moreover, the cross‐linked interfacial layer can act as an airtight "protective wall", preventing the device from water and oxygen corrosion and lead leakage. The flexible devices aided by this strategy show considerable performance ranging from small size to scalable modules (20.86%‐0.07 cm2, 16.75%‐24 cm2). More importantly, the optimal devices yield excellent moisture resistance, light soaking resistance, and lead leakage prevention stability. Based on the common light source environment of indoor scenes, the excellence of flexible modules (30.73% under white light‐emitting diode (LED), 26.48% under yellow LED) is further validated. It is expected that this gentle strategy can underline simultaneous promoting of the efficiency and stability of flexible perovskite modules, thereby accelerating the application of flexible perovskite in advanced industrial fields.

A Mechanically Robust Conducting Polymer Network Electrode for Efficient Flexible Perovskite Solar Cells

Abstract:Lightweight and mechanically flexible photovoltaics enable roll-to-roll processing, which improves their potential for low-cost mass production. However, the lack of highly conductive and transparent flexible electrodes still causes reduced efficiency relative to solar cells formed on rigid substrates. Here, we demonstrate an electrode that reduces this performance gap in perovskite solar cells (PSCs) by regulating the phase separation of a conducting polymer network using a fluorosurfactant dopant. This network electrode simultaneously offers high conductivity (> 4,000 S/cm), improved transmittance (over 80% from 400 to 900 nm), and high mechanical endurance. PSCs with this electrode achieve stabilized power conversion efficiencies of 19.0% and 10.9% at aperture areas of 0.1 cm 2 and 25 cm(2), respectively, which is comparable to control devices on rigid substrates. This electrode further shows promise as the top electrode in semi-transparent PSCs, which show a stabilized efficiency of 12.5% at 30.6% average visible transmittance. Each of these cells exhibits strong mechanical stability, retaining 80% at 25 cm(2), 85% at 0.1 cm(2), and 90% for semi-transparent devices of their original efficiency after 5,000 bending cycles at a curvature radius of 3 mm.

Abstract:In our day-to-day lives, advances in lightweight and flexible photovoltaics will promote a new generation of soft electronics and machines requiring high power-per-weight. Ultrathin flexible perovskite solar cells (F-PSCs) with high power-per-weight have displayed a unique potential for specific applications where lower weight, higher flexibility, and conformability are indispensable. This Review highlights the recent progress and practical applications of ultrathin and lightweight F-PSCs and demonstrates the routes toward enhanced device efficiency and improved mechanical and environmental stability concerning the choice of flexible substrates and the development of high-performance functional layers and flexible transparent electrodes. The fabrication technologies for mass production of efficient F-PSCs at large scale are then summarized, including continuous roll-to-roll methods integrated with low-temperature process. Furthermore, the practical applications focused on self-powered wearable electronic devices, solar-powered miniature unmanned aerial vehicles, and even solar modules operating in near-space are elaborated. Finally, the current challenging issues and future perspective are discussed, aiming to promote more extensive applications and commercialization processes for lightweight F-PSCs.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Ultra-Thin Perovskite Solar Cells with High Specific Power Density Based on Colorless Polyimide Substrates

Abstract:Ultra-thin perovskite solar cells (UTPSCs) have garnered significant attention for their high specific power and potential application in space missions. However, the efficiency of ultrathin solar cells has been constrained by challenges in handling and fabricating them on the fragile ultra-thin substrates, leading to notable performance disparities compared to their rigid counterparts. Here, we present a novel method for fabricating efficient and stable ultrathin flexible PSCs. By employing a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) buffer layer and controlling the imidization temperature of colorless polyimide (CPI), we prepared an ultra-thin CPI substrate with a thickness of 1-3 μm, which can be easily peeled off. This technique provides a heat-resistant ultra-thin substrate with a smooth surface for UTPSC fabrication. Additionally, the ultra-thin substrate exhibits superior thermal conductivity and more uniform temperature distribution compared to conventional flexible substrates. Ultimately, we achieve a 1.5 μm UTPSC with a power conversion efficiency of 22.13% and an outstanding specific power density of 50 W/g, surpassing most existing solar cells. Remarkably, the UTPSCs demonstrate exceptional mechanical robustness, maintaining performance even under rigorous bending and twisting. Moreover, CPI exhibited better thermal expansion matching with perovskite and demonstrated enhanced stability under low-temperature conditions and thermal cycling, showing potential for space applications. Our approach of preparing ultrathin CPI substrates offers an effective pathway for fabricating lightweight and highly flexible electronics.

Abstract:Optoelectronic devices, such as photodetectors and photovoltaics, are susceptible to surface contamination or water damage that can lead to reductions in performance or stability. Applying superhydrophobic coatings to these devices can introduce self-cleaning behavior and water resistance to extend their lifetime and improve their efficiency. However, existing methods for inducing superhydrophobicity have not been compatible with ultraflexible devices because of their thickness and complexity requirements. In this work, we introduce a procedure for inducing superhydrophobic and self-cleaning behavior on ultraflexible components using a combination of shrinkage-induced wrinkles and a low-surface-energy coating. We apply these techniques to an ultraflexible organic photovoltaics and demonstrate excellent hydrophobicity and self-cleaning behavior.

A Biomimetic Self‐Shield Interface for Flexible Perovskite Solar Cells with Negligible Lead Leakage

Abstract:Abstract Although outstanding power conversion efficiency (PCE) has been achieved in flexible perovskite solar cells, unsatisfactory operational stability and toxicity caused by the moisture transmittance of polymer packaging are still the bottleneck challenges that limit their applications. Herein, inspired by the non‐selective permeability of inactivated cell membrane, the diphosphatidyl‐glycerol (Di‐g) is tactfully introduced as a self‐shield interface upon the perovskite layer. 96% of lead leakage is suppressed because the amphipathic Di‐g can simultaneously bind tightly to the divalent lead ion and afford an interfacial water‐resistance. More importantly, the gradient distribution of lattice residual stress perpendicular to the substrate are optimized. The resultant flexible devices achieve a PCE of 20.29% and 15.01% at effective areas of 1.01 and 21.82 cm 2 respectively, yielding excellent environmental and mechanical stability. This strategy exhibits the feasibility of developing interfacial encapsulation to stabilize scalable PSCs with negligible lead leakage.

Abstract:Self-charging perovskite solar capacitors (SPSCs) that harvest and store solar energy simultaneously can offer sustainable, off-grid power supply for electrical devices. In particular, flexible and lightweight SPSCs are highly desirable in practical applications but are currently restricted by the high annealing temperature needed to make the electron transport layer (ETL) in the devices. Herein, we demonstrate a novel SPSC by integrating a perovskite solar cell (PSC) using amorphous WO x film deposited at room temperature as ETL and a quasi-solid-state supercapacitor (SC). The WO x film with 26 nm thickness yielded a champion power conversion efficiency of 14.14% and 10.80% with the FTO/glass rigid and the ITO/PEN flexible PSCs, respectively. Investigation of the performance of the SPSCs based on the rigid substrate (r-SPSC) and the flexible substrate (f- SPSC) exhibited that the r-SPSC could be photo-charged to 0.68 V within 20 s while the f-SPSC required 25 s to be charged to 0.65 V. Consequently, an overall conversion efficiencies of 2.13% and 1.27% were obtained with the r-SPSCs and the f-SPSC, respectively. This work paves a new way towards making SPSCs that may serve as off-grid electrical power supply in the future.

Abstract:Perovskite films are susceptible to be degraded during its service period due to their weak mechanical properties. Acylhydrazone-bonded waterborne polyurethane (Ab-WPU) was employed as dynamic covalent polymer engineering to develop self-healing perovskite solar cells (SHPSCs). Ab-WPU enhances the crystallinity of perovskite film, passivates the defects of the perovskite film through functional groups, and demonstrates the promising flexibility and mild temperature self-healing property of SHPSCs. The champion efficiency of SHPSCs on rigid and flexible substrates reaches 24.2% and 21.27% respectively. The moisture and heat stability of devices was improved. After 1000 bending cycles, Ab-WPU-modified flexible device can be restored to an efficiency over 95% of its original efficiency by heating to 60oC. This is because the dynamic acylhydrazone bond can be activated to repair perovskite film defects at mild temperature of 60oC as evidenced by in-situ AFM studies. This strategy provides an effective pathway for dynamic self-healing materials in PSCs under operational conditions.

Abstract:Flexible perovskite solar cells (F-PSCs) are increasingly being recognized for their high specific power density and mechanical flexibility. However, the feasibility of large-scale production via low-cost ambient printing towards high-performance cells and large modules remains under-explored. Herein, we succeed in ambient printing of perovskite films for high-performance F-PSCs by utilizing a novel ionic liquid, 1-butyl-3-methylpyridine thiocyanate (BPySCN), to address challenges associated with ambient moisture interference and poor crystallization quality at low-temperature processing. This functional additive, containing dual ionic components with electron-donating properties, plays multiple functional roles at different stages of device fabrication. The strong coordination affinity between BPySCN and perovskite modulates crystallization to reduce the nucleation density during low-temperature ambient printing, and retard the crystal growth in the annealing step to regulate the composition homogeneity and mitigate stain residue within films. After annealing, the residual ionic liquid uniformly distributed throughout perovskite films helps to passivate defects, leading to more efficient charge transport and suppressed energy loss. As a result, the small-area (0.09 cm2) PSCs on both rigid and flexible substrates achieve power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of 23.70% and 23.01%, respectively, and the 117.0 cm2-scale flexible module delivers a high PCE of 17.52% (certified 15.30%) with an impressive specific power density of 1969.1 W kg-1 (certified 1705.3 W kg-1), which are all among the highest in their respective categories. Furthermore, the potential for wearable electronics was demonstrated through integrated devices, representing a significant advancement in the commercial progress of F-PSCs. Ionic-liquid mediated scalable ambient-printing for efficient perovskite solar modules to achieve wearable electronic integration.

Abstract:Since perovskite solar cell (PSC) is emerging as a next generation photovoltaic, counter electrode takes significant role in the commercializing process. Not only its nature abundancy of carbon, but also the proper electronic property and flexibility allow the carbon electrode as a strong candidate for the future electrode. Herein, heat, moisture, and light resistive electrode‐based PSCs were fabricated via tailored elastomer and carbon materials. For device applicable perspective and to fabricate encapsulative electrode, carbon paper and paste obtaining elastomer‐based binder (Polyisobutylene) were utilized together, both J‐V performance up to 17% and long‐term stability were enhanced compared to the single paste system. To confirm the hydrophobicity with encapsulating ability, direct water‐dipping test was conducted and negligible power conversion efficiency (PCE) loss were observed. Last but not least, optimized device without extra encapsulation exhibited robust stability under harsh condition retaining ∽80% of initial PCE for 750 (60 °C and 1 sun), which paves the new concept of carbon electrode as an electrode itself and encapsulating material at the same time. Abstract:<h2>Abstract</h2><p>Flexible and lightweight solar cells are promising for numerous emerging applications, and organometallic halide perovskites are particularly suitable for flexible solar cell applications. Transferring state of art high efficiency perovskite solar cells (PSCs) processing onto a flexible substrate, however, is challenging, requiring substantial redevelopment of materials compositions, device architectures, and processing conditions. In this work, highly flexible, robust, stable, and high efficiency PSCs based on mica substrate have been successfully developed, exhibiting a champion photovoltaic conversion efficiency (PCE) of 18.0%, retaining more than 91.7% of the original PCE after 5000 cycles of large deformation bending, and being relatively stable against humidity under elevated temperature. Key to such excellent performance is the inorganic and transparent mica substrate that is chemically inert and stable under high temperature, so that processing developed for glass-based high efficiency perovskite solar cells (PSCs) can be readily applied without modification. Furthermore, the layered mica substrate is highly flexible, and van der Waals epitaxial growth of transparent conducting ITO relaxes the mechanical constraint on the PSCs substantially, reducing the strain in the device even under large bending deformation. We believe inorganic flexible mica substrate can be used as a platform for high efficiency PSCs compatible to glass substrate, speeding up the development of flexible PSCs substantially.</p>
