Abstract:The self-assembly of linear ABC triblock copolymers under cylindrical confinements is investigated in two-dimensional space using the real-space self-consistent field theory. The effects of confinement degrees and preferential strengths on the triblock copolymer phase behaviors with special polymer parameters are first considered. On one hand, different confinement degrees cause different phase behaviors in nanopores with the neutral surfaces. Moreover, the strongly preferential surface fields can surpass the confinement degrees and volume fractions in determing the confined phase behaviors. On the other hand, in contrast, confined morphologies are more sensitive to the variations in the A-preferential surface field strength. Subsequently, the incompatibility degrees between different blocks are systematically varied under cylindrical nanopore confinements. Under cylindrical nanopore confinements, the morphologies are very sensitive to the variations in the incompatibility degrees. Meanwhile, nanopore confinements can affect order-disorder and order-order transition points in the bulk. The corresponding free, internal, and entropic energies as well as the order parameters are also quantificationally examined to deeply investigate the confined phase mechanisms, and a number of morphological transitions are confirmed to be of first-order. These findings may guide the design of novel nanostructures based on triblock copolymers by introducing confinements.
Concentric lamella structures of symmetric diblock copolymers confined in cylindrical nanopores

Abstract:We applied a real-space self-consistent field theory to investigate the concentric lamella structures of symmetric diblock copolymers confined in the cylindrical nanopores with the preferential surfaces. The symmetric diblock copolymers are selected to locate in the very weak and strong segregation regions where the lamellae obviously exhibit the “soft” and “rigid” characteristics, respectively. For the soft lamellae, the cylindrical confinement induces the soft concentric lamella structure with the same thickness as the bulk lamellar period, except that the thickness of the innermost layer depends on the confinement degree. For the rigid lamellae, the cylindrical confinement not only induces the rigid concentric lamella structure having the linear dependence on the confinement degree, but also results in several novel morphologies, such as the connective concentric lamella and the broken concentric lamella structures. The results are quantitatively discussed in a wide range of confinement degree and can be reasonably understood based on symmetry breaking and structural frustration. In addition, our results are quantitatively compared to the available observations from the simulations and experiments, which are in good agreements and may be helpful to experimentally fabricate the ordered nanostructures on the large scale.

Abstract:AbstractAlthough a great deal of unique nanostructures were already obtained from polymer self-assemblies in terms of conventional parameters, the self-assembly under the confinement is still not well understood. Here, dissipative particle dynamics simulations were used to explore the self-assemble behaviors of linear ABC triblock copolymers under rigid spherical confinements. First several unusual morphologies, such as multilayer onion, coupled helix, and stacked lamella, were distinguished from the total 210 simulations. Second, the influences of three important parameters (block sequence, wall selectivity, and spherical radius) on the morphologies were discussed in detail. Finally, the dynamics evolution of several typical aggregates was examined. This simulation enriches micelle morphologies for the self-assembly of linear ABC triblock copolymers under rigid spherical confinements and is helpful to understand the formation of valuable nanostructures from linear ABC terpolymers.
Vesicles from the Self-Assembly of Coil–rod–coil Triblock Copolymers in Selective Solvents

Abstract:Self-assembled vesicles formed by symmetrical coil rod coil triblock copolymer in selective solvents are investigated by dissipative particle dynamics method. With varying the coil length L-c and the rod length L-r, five kinds of typically ordered micelles are observed, including the special vesicles formed in the range of the rod block ratio f(r) approximate to 30% similar to 50% and the rod length L-r <= 9. The kinetic process of vesicle formation is also observed. The aggregates firstly experience the fusion, elongation, and deformation, and then encompass the solvents, and finally close up to a vesicle membrane, where the bilayer disc is observed as an intermediate phase transited from solid micelles to hollow vesicles. A scaling behavior of the average aggregate size with time is also obtained during the process of the self-assembly. Furthermore, the effects of polymer concentration f(p) and solvent property are discussed. Vesicle structure only appears in the range of f(p) = 6% similar to 25%, where vesicle size exhibits a well linear increase with polymer concentration. Meanwhile, vesicle size decreases with an increase in the interactions a(CS) between coil blocks and solvents. Due to the interfacial energy increased with a(CS), the system minimizes interfacial energy by compressing the vesicle size. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:The microstructures of asymmetric diblock copolymer nanoparticles were investigated using real-space self-consistent field theory. The nanoparticle boundary provides a spherical confinement in which the highly deformable copolymers are forced into a closed and crowded space. The surface-field-induced effects on the microstructures were examined systematically, and a rich variety of novel structures, such as mixtures of distorted cylinders and spherical lamellae, was observed in the copolymer nanoparticles. Investigations of the free energies indicate that the surface-field-induced structural transitions are of the first order. The formation mechanism of the confinement-induced structures was reasonably elucidated, based on the interactions between the polymer chains and confinement boundaries, and on the spherical symmetry from confinements. Our theoretical results are in good agreement with available simulation and experimental observations. The asymmetric diblock copolymer nanoparticles show a rich variety of novel structures, such as mixtures of distorted cylinders and spherical lamellae, due to the surface-field-induced effects from the nanoparticle surfaces.
Nanostructures and Phase Diagrams of ABC Star Triblock Copolymers in Pore Geometries

Abstract:The nanostructures and phase diagrams of ABC star triblock copolymers in pore geometries are investigated using the real-space self-consistent field theory in two-dimensional space. Two types of pores with neutral surfaces, namely, pores with small and large diameters, are considered. A rich variety of nanostructures are exhibited by the ABC star triblock copolymers in these two types of pores, which differ from those observed in bulk and in other confinements. These structures include perpendicular undulating lamellae, concentric core-shell cylinders, polygonal tiling with cylindrical arrangements, and other complex structures. Triangular phase diagrams for the ABC star triblock copolymers are constructed. The small pores clearly affect the corner and central space of the phase diagrams by distorting the bulk structures into concentric arrangements. Meanwhile, the large pores induce the transformation of bulk structures into concentric structures in most of the phase space, but slightly affect the structures at the center of the phase diagrams. Furthermore, the order-order and order-disorder phase transitions, as well as the stable and metastable phases, in the triangular phase diagrams are examined by analyzing their free energies. These observations on the ABC star triblock copolymers in the pore geometries provide a deeper insight into the behavior of macromolecules in a confined system.

Abstract:Cylindrical diblock copolymer/anisotropic nanorod composites under equilibrium and nonquilibrium conditions, have been modeled and simulated using dissipative particle dynamics. The aim of our present study is to understand how the anisotropic NRs affect the equilibrium self-assembled structure of diblock copolymers (DBCPs) melts and how the shear flow induces the dynamic behaviors of DBCPs/NRs composites, especially the orientation and distribution of NRs in diblock matrix. We consider two different shear directions categorized with respect to the flow velocity parallel or perpendicular to the orientation of initial structures, which are defined as z-axis shear flow and x-axis shear flow, respectively. Our results show the shear flow not only aligns the orientation of DBCPs template and the dispersed NRs toward the flow direction, but also regulates the orientational and positional order of NRs. The final self-assembly behaviors of DBCPs/NRs nanocomposites is determined by the interplay between shear-induced polymer thinning and NRs dispersion. This work provides us a viable strategy for creating polymer nanocomposites with tunable and enhanced processing properties.

Abstract:In this paper, the dynamic assembly of toroidal micelle structures of amphiphilic triblock copolymers in dilute solution has been investigated using dissipative particle dynamics simulations. The amphiphilic molecule is represented by a coarse-grained model, which contains hydrophilic and hydrophobic particles. Some microstructures of complex morphology having toroidal micelles have been observed in the simulations; the toroidal micelle formation is in accordance with the theoretical prediction of the toroidal structure in cylindrical micelle suspensions by Pochan et al. (Science 2004, 306, 94). These findings are very interesting, and these complex morphologies enrich our knowledge of the potential products obtained from the self-assembly of block copolymers.

Abstract:We study self-assembly of a binary mixture of components A and B confined in a slit-like pore with the walls modified by the stripes of tethered brushes made of beads of a sort A. The emphasis is on solvent mediated transitions between morphologies when the composition of the mixture varies. For certain limiting cases of the pore geometry we found that an effective reduction of the dimensionality may lead to a quasi one- and two-dimensional demixing. The change of the environment for the chains upon changing the composition of the mixture from polymer melt to a good solvent conditions provides explanation for the mechanism of development of several solvent mediated morphologies and, in some cases, for switching between them. We found solvent mediated lamellar, meander and in-lined cylinder phases. Quantitative analysis of morphology structure is performed considering brush overlap integrals and gyration tensor components.

Cylinder-Forming Triblock Terpolymer in Nanopores: A Monte Carlo Simulation Study

Abstract:This paper systematically investigated the self-assembly of a cylinder-forming A(13)B(3)C(2) triblock terpolymer confined in cylindrical nanopores using an annealing Monte Carlo simulation. When the pore wall is absolutely neutral, we observed the helix structures alternating with partial cylinder structures at the outside layer. When the pore wall attracts the shorter blocks, we observed various surface structures depending on the pore wall preference conditions; also, a general inner-layer structural transition sequence was confirmed. In addition; it was found that catenoid structures form in a broad pore diameter region when the pore wall attracts the longest block. This may be used to experimentally fabricate the long-range ordered nanostructure. The differences between this triblock terpolymer system and the cylinder-forming diblock copolymer system were compared, and it was found that the triblock system is more capable of retaining ordered structures under unfavorable confinement conditions.

Abstract:The self-assembled microstructures of amphiphilic block copolymers depend on the selectivity of solvents for each block. By changing the selectivity of solvents, defined in terms of the repulsive interactions between the solvent and the hydrophilic/hydrophobic particles, an extensive simulation study on the spontaneous formation of complex micelles from amphiphilic triblock copolymers in a dilute solution is presented. The dynamic pathways in the formation of these assemblies have been investigated using a particle-based dissipative particle dynamics approach. In addition, the potential mechanism behind the formation of these microstructures has also been studied, which may be helpful in explaining how these aggregates are formed and in understanding the general principle of amphiphilic molecules. Influence of the Surface Field on the Self-Assembly of a Diblock Copolymer Melt Confined in a Cylindrical Nanopore

Abstract:We study the influence of the surface field on lamellar morphologies that form in a diblock copolymer melt confined in a cylindrical nanopore, using self-consistent mean-field theory. By varying the pore diameter and surface field strength and by introducing a slight composition asymmetry, we systematically explore the stability regions of parallel and perpendicular lamellar phases and accurately compute the phase boundaries. When the surface field is weak, or the natural period of the lamellae is incommensurate with the pore size, lamellae perpendicular to the pore wall are preferred. A strong surface preference and/or a small composition asymmetry can lead to the formation of concentric parallel lamellae. In narrow pores, we find that complex structures can exist as equilibrium phases between regions of parallel and perpendicular lamellae. When we reduce the volume fraction of the block preferred by the pore wall, this composition asymmetry competes with the Surface preference and call lead to the formation of perpendicular lamellae. This suggests a route to produce perpendicular lamellar phases in the common experimental situation where a surface preference is present. This competition also enables us to characterize the strength of the surface field in the theory.

Abstract:Multicompartment micelles have advanced applications in biological and pharmaceutical fields. The self-assembly of the block copolymers with different chain architectures provides versatile and powerful routes to obtain multicompartment micelles in water. Here we apply the dissipative particle dynamics method to study the self-assembly of H-shaped triblock copolymers in a selective solvent. It is found that the H-shaped triblock copolymers can form micelles with different morphologies, such as worm-like micelles, hamburger micelles, core-shell-corona micelles, and cylinder micelles, etc. Among them, the cylinder micelles have not been reported before in the case of the copolymers with similar chain architecture (e.g.. Y-shaped copolymer). We demonstrate a convenient approach to obtain different morphologies by only adjusting the arrangement of the copolymers' blocks. These results may be helpful for the design of multicompartment micelles for various application purposes.

Abstract:A relative approach, based on the dynamic density functional theory, for simulating the solvent evaporation rate dependence of self-assembly process of block copolymers in solution is proposed. The di- and triblock copolymers are first chosen as the candidates for exploration of novel microstructures. The results reveal that asymmetrical block copolymers with unequal block length, which generally exhibit disordered microdomain patterns in melts, have the ability to assemble into periodic ordered microdomain patterns by properly controlling solvent evaporation rate, e.g., diblock copolymers may assemble into lamellar microstructures with lamellar thickness proportional to individual block length. This simulation suggests a strategy of design and manufacture of polymeric nanomaterials with novel microstructures.

Abstract:During self-assembly process of block copolymers in solution, when the volume fraction of solvophobic blocks is too low, usually below 10%, the copolymers generally tend to dissolve, which has caused trouble. Herein, a bottlebrush block copolymer composed of poly(L-lactic acid) (PLLA) and quaternized poly(N,N-dimethylaminoethylmethacrylate) (QPDMAEMA), whose content of solvophobic block PLLA was below 2 wt%, was prepared. Owing to the rigidity derived from the advantages of topological structure of bottlebrush-like molecules, the interfacial curvature between two incompatible microphases is maintained, and this highly asymmetric copolymer unexpectedly spontaneously assembles into uniform spherical micelles with diameters of tens of nanometers. The morphology of aggregates was verified by dynamic light scattering, transmission electron microscopy and atomic force microscope. This study expands the understanding of traditional theory about copolymers self-assembly in solution, which helps to design, prepare, and apply polymer micelles with various structures from a broader perspective.

Abstract:We systematically investigate the microdomain morphologies that self-assemble in a diblock copolymer melt confined to a narrow cylindrical nanopore using real-space self-consistent mean-field theory. We observe, for a bulk cylinder-forming copolymer, that a variety of novel microdomain structures emerge under confinement. As the pore diameter increases, the following sequence of stable structures occurs: single cylinder, stacked disks, single helix, double helix, toroid-sphere, and helix-cylinder. We accurately locate the pore diameters where first-order phase transitions between these morphologies occur. We vary the interaction of the diblock copolymer with the pore wall from being preferential for the minority block to neutral to being preferential for the majority block and find that the sequence of structures is unchanged, for these interactions. The pitch angle of the helices and the pore diameter can be related using a simple geometrical argument. Over the range of pore diameters we examine, phases involving arrangements of multiple straight cylinders along the pore axis have significantly higher free energy than the structures mentioned above. Our results are consistent with experiments and a recent simulated annealing study.

Abstract:Self-assembly of ABC star triblock copolymers confined in cylindrical nanopores is studied using real-space self-consistent mean-field theory. Specifically, the investigation focuses on the confined self-assembly of a triblock copolymer which forms hierarchical lamellae in the bulk. Generically, the hierarchical lamellae can be parallel or perpendicular to the pore surfaces. Concentric rings of A and B/C lamellae are formed in the parallel case. The B/C layers further form B/C domains. The number of B/C domains is controlled by the pore size. In the perpendicular case, the B/C layers are arranged alternatively along the pore axis. The stability of these observed structures is analyzed.

Abstract:The solution self-assembly of amphiphilic polymers provides a versatile approach to design novel nanostructured materials. Multiblock polymers, particularly those composed of liquid crystalline and coil blocks, are of significant interest due to the potential display of nematic ordering in liquid crystalline domains, offering intriguing optical and mechanical properties. In this study, dissipative particle dynamics is used to investigate the solution self-assembly of rod-coil-rod copolymers in a coil-selective solvent. Extensive molecular simulations were conducted to elucidate the impact of polymer composition, concentration and flexibility on the self-assembly behavior. A quantitative analysis was performed to investigate how polymer conformations varied with changes in composition, concentration, and rigidity. Simulation results show that, at small rod compositions, rod-coil-rod polymers self-assemble into micelles at low concentrations, transitioning to network formation as concentration increases. An increase in rod composition leads to the formation of larger aggregates, resulting in cylindrical micelles and membranes. The results reported here also offer insights into the role of flexibility in shaping the self-assembly behavior of rod-coil-rod triblocks in selective solvents, thus, contributing to a comprehensive understanding of the factors governing the formation of diverse structures in the solution self-assembly of triblock copolymers.

Abstract:A novel simulation methodology, that was based on dissipative particle dynamics (DPD) combined with information from molecular dynamics (MD) and calculations of an extended Maxwell-Stefan (MS) equations, was established to obtain multiscale analysis on the dynamics of hybrid induced phase separation (HIPS), taking polyvinylidene fluoride-diphenyl carbonate/water–ethanol (PVDF-DPC/water–ethanol) system as an example. Firstly, MS equations were derived to describe the heat transfer across the interface between the casting solution and coagulation to get the temperature profiles of the casting solution. Secondly, MD simulations for the PVDF-DPC solution were conducted to acquire bond and angle distributions of the PVDF chains. And compared to the DPD particle distributions, a novel DPD force field to describe the real flexibility of PVDF chains and a coarse-graining mapping between the MD and DPD were developed. Thirdly, based on the quenching time calculated by the MS equations and the DPD time scale, DPD simulations were carried out to demonstrate the dynamics of phase separation and membrane formation for different parts of the polymer solution via HIPS and compared to that via thermally induced phase separation (TIPS). The simulation results indicated that the mass transfer had a decisive effect on the phase separation of polymer solution near the interface and resulted in a highly asymmetric structure with a denser polymer top layer and porous sublayer, and this effect was together decided by the quenching rate and polymer solidification. For the inner parts of the polymer solution, a mainly isotropic structure was formed due to heat transfer. Based on experimental verification and simulation results, it can be known that the multiscale simulation was much closer to reality and can provide deep insights into the membrane formation prepared via the HIPS process.

Abstract:Using real-space self-consistent field theory calculations (SCFT), directed self-assembly of block copolymers was explored on sparsely nanopatterned substrates. In this study, the lamellar structure forming block copolymers are confined between two surfaces. The top surface is strictly neutral, and the bottom one is periodically patterned with neutral interspacing (nanopattern), which forms a sparsely nanopatterned substrate. The dimension of nanopatterns is commensurate with periods of lamellar structure of the block copolymers self-assembling in bulk. By systematically varying the film thickness and interspacing between nanopatterns, the density multiplication of nanopattern in the film was investigated, and a variety of nanostructures not available in bulk (nonbulk structures) were observed.
