Abstract:Emotional availability of parents plays a crucial role in the psychological well-being and development of adolescents. However, previous studies have primarily focused on assessing maternal emotional availability. The Lum Emotional Availability of Parents (LEAP) scale was developed, considering both mothers' and fathers' emotional availability. This study aimed to examine the psychometric properties of the LEAP scale among Portuguese adolescents ( N = 202). The results confirmed the unifactorial structure of the LEAP scale. Convergent construct validity was supported. Specifically, adolescents' perceptions of higher emotional availability from parents were related to better health-related quality of life. The LEAP scale also demonstrated small but positive associations with emotion regulation, with higher emotional availability being linked to lower use of expressive suppression and greater use of cognitive reappraisal. In conclusion, the findings suggest that the LEAP scale is a valid instrument for assessing adolescents' perceptions of both mothers' and fathers' emotional availability.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The paper attempts to address the following issues: 1. **Validation of Scale Structure**: The study aims to examine the psychometric properties of the Lum Emotional Availability of Parents (LEAP) scale among Portuguese adolescents. Specifically, the study investigates the factor structure of the LEAP scale through Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA). 2. **Assessment of Reliability**: The reliability of the LEAP scale is examined using Cronbach's Alpha coefficient and McDonald Omega coefficient. 3. **Exploration of Gender Invariance**: The study also explores the measurement invariance of the scale across different genders. 4. **Validation of Construct Validity**: The study investigates the convergent construct validity of the LEAP scale with Emotional Regulation (ER) and Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQoL). Overall, the study aims to validate whether the LEAP scale is an effective tool for assessing adolescents' perceptions of their parents' (including both mother and father) emotional availability. Additionally, the study explores the relationship between this emotional availability and adolescents' emotional regulation abilities and health-related quality of life.
