Abstract:This article presents a fixed-time accommodation strategy of actuator faults for hypersonic gliding vehicles (HGVs). The approach against actuator faults is incorporated by sliding mode control (SMC), bilimit homogeneity, and adaptive techniques, with consideration of practical constraints and model uncertainties. The resulting fault-tolerant attitude control law allows the fault compensation to be completed in a fixed time, in view of the limited time available for recovery of a faulty HGV. The effectiveness of the presented scheme is validated by comparing it to the finite-time fault accommodation scheme. Note to Practitioners—Hypersonic vehicles have drawn significant interests due to the features of super-fast and flexible maneuverability. The use of advanced fault-tolerant control (FTC) techniques is expected to guarantee safety during hypersonic vehicle operation. A challenging problem is how to counteract actuator faults promptly and effectively in the presence of practical constraints and model uncertainties. This article presents a fixed-time FTC algorithm for a hypersonic gliding vehicle.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The paper is primarily dedicated to addressing the issue of actuator faults encountered by hypersonic glide vehicles (HGVs) during mission execution. Specifically, the core objectives of the research include: 1. **Developing a fixed-time fault-tolerant control strategy**: To address the safety issues of HGVs in the face of actuator faults, the authors propose a new fixed-time fault-tolerant control method. This method combines sliding mode control (SMC), dual-limit homogeneity, and adaptive techniques to ensure fault compensation within a limited time. 2. **Considering practical constraints and model uncertainties**: In designing the fault-tolerant control strategy, practical operational constraints (such as actuator amplitude saturation) and the impact of model uncertainties are taken into account. These factors are crucial for the effectiveness and safety of the control algorithm. 3. **Validating the effectiveness of the scheme**: By comparing with finite-time fault-tolerant control schemes, the effectiveness of the proposed fixed-time fault-tolerant control strategy is validated. Experimental results show that the new scheme can restore the normal operating state of the vehicle more quickly. In summary, this research aims to solve the actuator fault problems that HGVs may encounter during mission execution by developing a new fixed-time fault-tolerant control strategy. It ensures rapid and effective fault recovery in the face of practical constraints and model uncertainties.
