Abstract:Translating artificial intelligence techniques into the realm of cognitive neuroscience holds promise for significant breakthroughs in our ability to probe the intrinsic mechanisms of the brain. The recent unprecedented development of robust AI models is changing how and what we understand about the brain. In this Editorial, we invite contributions for a BMC Neuroscience Collection on "AI and Cognitive Neuroscience".

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The paper primarily explores the interaction between Artificial Intelligence (AI) and cognitive neuroscience, as well as its application prospects in cognitive neuroscience research. Specifically, the author points out: 1. **Application of AI in Cognitive Neuroscience**: AI technology can be used to identify neural co-activation patterns related to cognitive activities and decode how these neural patterns directly influence cognitive outcomes through multivariate models. This helps to reveal the mechanisms behind abstract cognitive entities (such as attention and working memory) and complex cognitive scenarios (such as social interactions). 2. **Mutual Promotion of AI and Cognitive Neuroscience**: Advances in cognitive neuroscience have promoted the development of AI technology, especially in understanding deep neural networks. For example, Long Short-Term Memory networks (LSTM) were developed based on new discoveries in memory information processing. 3. **Challenges**: Despite the great potential of AI in cognitive neuroscience, there are still some challenges, including knowledge gaps, the black box problem, and insufficient model generalization capabilities. Therefore, it is necessary to develop explainable AI models (XAI) to improve their transparency and reliability in practical applications. 4. **Ethical Issues**: As AI is increasingly applied in the field of neuroscience, related ethical issues also need to be addressed, such as privacy protection, bias in machine-generated guidelines, and potential malicious manipulation. In summary, this paper aims to highlight the groundbreaking progress brought by the combination of AI and cognitive neuroscience and calls on researchers to jointly address the existing challenges.
