Abstract:As an existing method, proton-overdeuteron (H+-over-D+) can permeate through graphene by chemical pumping with a high selectivity quantum sieving effect at room temperature. The value from the controversially discussed mechanistic model of the penetration process by the chemisorption of local hydrogenation in the elementary unit of two-dimensional monolayer membrane has been a deviation from the obtained experimental separation coefficient of 10. Quantum sieving kinetic isotope effects must be reconsidered in the proposed models with a smaller scale and more detailed structure. The formed composite structures in the elementary unit in the penetration process based on the charge density, density of states and energy barrier calculations, and configurations of H3O+-g-Pt and H3O+-h-BN-Pt proved that the "hole" permeation mechanism had been consistent with the published separation coefficient of hydrogen isotopes and revealed that kinetic isotope effects had depended on the intense interaction between hydrogen isotopes and the key elementary unit of the two-dimensional materials.

Abstract:Recent reports on proton conduction across pristine graphene and hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) provide a new avenue for the design of proton exchange membranes. The uniform pores formed by the electron clouds of two-dimensional (2D) crystals can effectively block the undesired transportation of other species thus ultrahigh selectivity can be achieved. With the aid of first-principles calculations, we investigate the proton conduction process across six kinds of intact 2D crystals, namely graphene, h-BN, β12 boron sheet, χ3 boron sheet, phosphorene, and silicene. To clarify the proton conduction mechanism, three proton penetration modes are proposed: dissociation-penetration, adsorption-penetration, and direct penetration. Based on our calculation results, for graphene and h-BN without atomic defects, they are unlikely to provide sufficient proton conductivity at room temperature when no bias potential is applied. By contrast, the β12 boron sheet, χ3 boron sheets, and silicene exhibit relatively lower proton penetration energy barriers, making them prospective candidates for future proton exchange membrane applications.

Abstract:To resolve the problem of mobile electrolytes for the permeation of hydrogen isotopes in fuel cells, we have studied herein heteronuclear fullerene nanocages (Al 12 N 12 , Al 12 P 12 , B 12 N 12 , and B 12 P 12 ) for the separation and permeation of hydrogen isotopes. The separation and permeation of fullerene nanocages for hydrogen isotopes are studied at ωB97XD functional of DFT along with 6–31g (d,p) pople basis set. Zero-point energy (ZPE) is calculated for Protium (H + ) and its heavier isotopes including deuterium (D + ) and tritium (T + ). The Arrhenius equation is employed to calculate the selectivity of protium to deuterium (H + /D + ) and deuterium to tritium (H + /T + ) isotopes. The selectivity is calculated by using the zero-point energy difference (ZPE) of protium (H + ) to its heavier isotopes. The proposed fullerene nanocages estimated better selectivity for proton isotopes. The phosphide-based nanocages (Al 12 P 12 , B 12 P 12 ) provide superior selectivity values of H + /D + and H + /T + compared to nitrogen-based nanocages (Al 12 N 12 , B 12 N 12 ). Hydrogenation Facilitates Proton Transfer Through Two-Dimensional Honeycomb Crystals

Abstract:Recent experiments have triggered a debate about the ability of protons to transfer easily through individual layers of graphene and hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN). However, state-of-the-art computer calculations have shown that the barriers to proton penetration can, at >3 eV, be excessively high. Despite considerable interest the origin of this apparent anomaly between experiment and simulation remains unclear. We offer a new perspective on this debate and show on the basis of first-principles calculations that the barrier for proton penetration is significantly reduced, to <1 eV, upon hydrogenation, even in the absence of pinholes in the lattice. Although hydrogenation has not been offered as an explanation before, analysis reveals that the barrier is reduced because hydrogenation destabilizes the initial state (a deep-lying chemisorption state) and expands the honeycomb lattice through which the protons penetrate. This study offers a rationalization of the fast proton transfer observed in experiments and highlights the ability of proton transport through single-layer materials in hydrogen-rich solutions.
Quantum Tunneling of Thermal Protons Through Pristine Graphene

Abstract:Atomically thin two-dimensional materials such as graphene and hexagonal boron nitride have recently been found to exhibit appreciable permeability to thermal protons, making these materials emerging candidates for separation technologies [S. Hu et al., Nature 516, 227 (2014); M. Lozada-Hidalgo et al., Science 351, 68 (2016).]. These remarkable findings remain unexplained by density-functional electronic structure calculations, which instead yield barriers that exceed by 1.0 eV those found in experiments. Here we resolve this puzzle by demonstrating that the proton transfer through pristine graphene is driven by quantum nuclear effects, which substantially reduce the transport barrier by up to 1.4 eV compared to the results of classical molecular dynamics (MD). Our Feynman-Kac path-integral MD simulations unambiguously reveal the quantum tunneling mechanism of strongly interacting hydrogen ions through two-dimensional materials. In addition, we predict a strong isotope effect of 1 eV on the transport barrier for graphene in vacuum and at room temperature. These findings not only shed light on the graphene permeability to protons and deuterons, but also offer new insights for controlling the underlying quantum ion transport mechanisms in nanostructured separation membranes.

Sieving hydrogen isotopes through two dimensional crystals

Abstract:One-atom-thick crystals are impermeable to atoms and molecules, but hydrogen ions (thermal protons) penetrate through them. We show that monolayers of graphene and boron nitride can be used to separate hydrogen ion isotopes. Employing electrical measurements and mass spectrometry, we find that deuterons permeate through these crystals much slower than protons, resulting in a separation factor of ~10 at room temperature. The isotope effect is attributed to a difference of about 60 meV between zero-point energies of incident protons and deuterons, which translates into the equivalent difference in the activation barriers posed by two dimensional crystals. In addition to providing insight into the proton transport mechanism, the demonstrated approach offers a competitive and scalable way for hydrogen isotope enrichment.

Abstract:We present a novel design of two-dimensional (2D) angular-resolved spectrometer for full beam characterization of ultrashort intense laser driven proton sources. A rotated 2D pinhole array was employed, as selective entrance before a pair of parallel permanent magnets, to sample the full proton beam into discrete beamlets. The proton beamlets are subsequently dispersed without overlapping onto a planar detector. Representative experimental result of protons generated from femtosecond intense laser interaction with thin foil target is presented.

Abstract:Hydrogen isotope separation has been effectively achieved electrochemically by passage of gaseous H2/D2 through graphene/Nafion composite membranes. Nevertheless, deuteron nearly does not exist in the form of gaseous D2 in nature but as liquid water. Thus, it is a more feasible way to separate and enrich deuterium from water. Herein, we have successfully transferred monolayer graphene to a rigid and porous polymer substrate, PITEM (polyimide track-etched membrane), which could avoid the swelling problem of the Nafion substrate as well as keep the integrity of graphene. Meanwhile, defects in the large area of CVD graphene could be successfully repaired by interfacial polymerization resulting in a high separation factor. Moreover, a new model was proposed for the proton transport mechanism through monolayer graphene based on the kinetic isotope effect (KIE). In this model, graphene plays a significant role in the H/D separation process by completely breaking the O-H/O-D bond, which can maximize the KIE, leading to increased H/D separation performance. This work suggests a promising application for using monolayer graphene in the industry and proposes a pronounced understanding of proton transport in graphene.

Abstract:Isotopes separation through quantum sieving effect of membranes is quite promising for industrial applications. For the light hydrogen isotopologues (eg. H2, D2), the confinement of potential wells in porous membranes to isotopologues was commonly regarded to be crucial for highly efficient separation ability. Here, we demonstrate from first-principles that a potential barrier is also favorable for efficient hydrogen isotopologues separation. Taking an already-synthesized two-dimensional carbon nitride (C2N-h2D) as an example, we predict that the competition between quantum tunneling and zero-point-energy (ZPE) effects regulated by the tensile strain leads to high selectivity and permeance. Both kinetic quantum sieving and equilibrium quantum sieving effects are considered. The quantum effects revealed in this work offer a prospective strategy for highly efficient hydrogen isotopologues separation.

Abstract:Light-induced deprotonation of molecules is an important process in photochemical reactions. Here, we theoretically investigate the tunneling deprotonation of H2+ and its asymmetric isotopologues driven by circularly polarized THz laser pulses. The quasi-static picture shows that the field-dressed potential barrier is significantly lowered for the deprotonation channel when the mass asymmetry of the diatomic molecule increases. Our numerical simulations demonstrate that when the mass symmetry breaks, the tunneling deprotonation is significantly enhanced and the proton tunneling becomes the dominant dissociation channel in the THz driving fields. In addition, the simulated nuclear momentum distributions show that the emission of the proton is directed by the effective vector potential for the deprotonation channel and, meanwhile, the angular distribution of the emitting proton is affected by the alignment and rotation of the molecule induced by the rotating field.

Abstract:With the subatomic selectivity, two-dimensional (2D) crystals can efficiently separate hydrogen ion isotopes, which are expected to improve the separation performance for hydrogen ion isotopes in solid polymer electrolyte (SPE) electrolysis. In this study, the effects of monolayer graphene (MLG) and monolayer hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) on the penetration barriers and the separation factors of hydrogen isotopes under SPE electrolysis environment were discussed using density functional theory (DFT). The model of "sandwich" structured membrane was established to calculate the penetration barriers, and the effects of penetration path, aqueous environment, size, and Stone-Wales 55-77 (SW (55-77)) defect were discussed. By comparing the penetration barriers of the penetration paths, it was found that hydrogen ion isotopes could perpendicularly pass through the geometric center of the 2D crystal preferentially. The values of penetration barriers were calculated to be 1.45 eV and 0.65 eV for MLG and h-BN in vacuum environment, respectively, and they would be further slightly increased to 1.65 eV for MLG and 0.95 eV for h-BN in an aqueous environment. However, the existence of SW (55-77) defect in MLG and h-BN was found to noticeably reduce their penetration barriers to 0.78 eV and 0.32 eV, respectively. Additionally, the separation factors of H+/D+ and H+/T+ were estimated as 11–12 and 33–34 for MLG, 17–18 and 57–61 for h-BN, respectively. These calculating results indicate that 2D materials would significantly increase the separation factors of hydrogen ion isotopes in the SPE electrolysis compared with the traditional SPE electrolysis (H+/D+~2, H+/T+~12), which would advance the establishment of highly efficient hydrogen isotopes separation technology.

High proton conductivity through angstrom-porous titania

Abstract:Two dimensional (2D) crystals have attracted strong interest as a new class of proton conducting materials that can block atoms, molecules and ions while allowing proton transport through the atomically thin basal planes. Although 2D materials exhibit this perfect selectivity, the reported proton conductivities have been relatively low. Here we show that vacancy-rich titania monolayers are highly permeable to protons while remaining impermeable to helium with proton conductivity exceeding 100 S cm-2 at 200 C and surpassing targets set by industry roadmaps. The fast and selective proton transport is attributed to an extremely high density of titanium-atom vacancies (one per square nm), which effectively turns titania monolayers into angstrom-scale sieves. Our findings highlight the potential of 2D oxides as membrane materials for hydrogen-based technologies.

Tunable hydrogen separation in sp-sp 2 hybridized carbon membranes: A first-principles prediction

Abstract:First-principles calculations are carried out to investigate the hydrogen separation characteristics of two-dimensional carbon allotropes consisting of sp- and sp(2)-hybridized carbon atoms, i.e., graphyne, graphdiyne, and rhombic-graphyne. The selectivities for H-2 over several gas molecules, including CO, N-2, and CH4, are found to be sensitive to the pore sizes and shapes. The penetration barriers generally decrease exponentially with the pore sizes. Our results reveal that graphyne with small pores is unsuitable for the purpose of hydrogen separation. Graphdiyne, with larger pores, exhibits a high selectivity (10(9)) for hydrogen over large gas molecules such as CH4, but a relatively low selectivity (10(3)) over small molecules such as CO and N-2. The large differences in diffusion barriers for molecules penetration through a rhombic-graphyne monolayer, which possesses pore size in between that of graphyne and graphdiyne, lead to a high selectivity (>10(16)) for hydrogen separation from the others. The results suggest that the abundant pores of different sizes in these carbon allotropes make them ideal molecular sieves for gas separation applications directed toward different separation needs and objectives.

Abstract:Biphenylene networks typically exhibit a metallic electronic nature, while hydrogenation can open the band gap changing it to a semiconductor. This property makes hydrogenated biphenylene a promising candidate for use in semiconductor optoelectronic materials and devices. In this work, three representative configurations of hydrogenated biphenylene, denoted by α, β and γ, were investigated. The structural, mechanical, electronic, and optical properties of these hydrogenated biphenylene configurations were calculated by the first-principles calculation. Band gaps with HSE correction were 4.69, 4.42 and 4.39 eV for α, β, and γ configurations, respectively. Among these three configurations, β presents the best electronic performance and special elastic properties (negative Poisson's ratio), while γ exhibits the best elastic properties. In addition, we comprehensively analyze the mechanical properties of these configurations and provide evidence that hydrogenated biphenylene possibly exhibits a negative-Poisson's-ratio along the zigzag and armchair directions when hydrogen atoms are added to biphenylene in certain ways. Furthermore, although the electronic properties of γ are weaker than those of β, they are also excellent. In addition, the binding energies of β and γ are relatively lower, which indicates that β and γ are more stable. Our findings demonstrate that the hydrogenated biphenylene is a promising material with significant application potential in optoelectronic devices.

Abstract:Many-body tunnelling is a complex but important phenomenon. Scanning tunnelling microscopy experiments with a Cl-terminated tip on a cyclic cluster of hydrogen-bonded water molecules now demonstrate controllable concerted tunnelling of four protons. Proton transfer through hydrogen bonds plays a fundamental role in many physical, chemical and biological processes1,2,3,4,5. Proton dynamics is susceptible to quantum tunnelling, which typically involves many hydrogen bonds simultaneously, leading to correlated many-body tunnelling6,7,8,9. In contrast to the well-studied incoherent single-particle tunnelling, our understanding of many-body tunnelling is still in its infancy. Here we report the real-space observation of concerted proton tunnelling in a cyclic water tetramer using a cryogenic scanning tunnelling microscope. This is achieved by monitoring the reversible interconversion of the hydrogen-bonding chirality of the water tetramer with a chlorine-terminated scanning tunnelling microscope tip. We found that the presence of the Cl anion at the tip apex may either enhance or suppress the concerted tunnelling process, depending on the details of the coupling symmetry between the Cl ion and the protons. Our work opens up the possibility of controlling the quantum states of protons with atomic-scale precision.
Highly Effective H2/D2 Separation within the Stable Cu(I)Cu(II)-BTC: The Effect of Cu(I) Structure on Quantum Sieving.

Abstract:Realizing ideal deuterium separation from isotopic mixtures remains a daunting challenge because of their almost identical sizes, shapes, and physicochemical properties. Using the quantum sieving effect in porous materials with suitable pore size and open metal sites (OMSs) enables efficient hydrogen isotope separation. Herein, synthetic HKUST-1-derived microporous mixed-valence Cu(I)Cu(II)-BTC (BTC = benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylate), featuring a unique network of distinct Cu(I) and Cu(II) coordination sites, can remarkably boost the D2/H2 isotope separation, which has a high selectivity (SD2/H2) of 37.9 at 30 K, in comparison with HKUST-1 and other porous materials. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate that the introduction of Cu(I) macrocycles in the framework decreases the pore size and further leads to relatively enhanced interaction of H2/D2 molecules on Cu(II) sites. The significantly enhanced selectivity of Cu(I)Cu(II)-BTC at 30 K can be mainly attributed to the synergistic effect of kinetic quantum sieving (KQS) and chemical affinity quantum sieving (CAQS). The results reveal that Cu(I) OMSs exhibit counterintuitive behaviors and play a crucial role in tuning quantum sieving without a complex structural design, which provides a deeper insight into quantum sieving mechanisms and a new strategy for the intelligent design of highly efficient isotope systems.

Abstract:Inspired by the remarkable photochemical and photophysical properties of novel 2-(2’-hydroxyphenyl)benzothiazole (HBT) derivatives that could be potentially applied across various disciplines, in this work, effects of atomic electronegativity of chalcogen elements on excited state hydrogen bond effects and excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) reaction of the biphenyl-modified HBT derivatives (i.e. HBT-HH-O, HBT-HH-S and HBT-HH-Se) are focused. By comparing the structural changes and infrared (IR) vibrational spectra of the HBT-HH fluorophores in toluene solvent, combined with the preliminary detection of hydrogen bond interaction by core-valence bifurcation (CVB) index, we can conclude that the hydrogen bond could be strengthened in S1 state, which is favourable for the occurrence of ESIPT reactions. The charge recombination behaviour of hydrogen bond induced by photoexcitation also further illustrates this point. Via constructing potential energy curves (PECs) based on restrictive optimisation and searching transition state (TS) form, we confirm the variations of atomic electronegativity of chalcogen have the regulatory effect on the ESIPT behaviour for HBT-HH derivatives, that is, the lower the atomic electronegativity is more conducive to the ESIPT reaction.
