Abstract:We perform classical-statistical real-time lattice simulations to compute real-time spectral functions and momentum broadening of quarks in the presence of strongly populated non-Abelian gauge fields. Based on a novel methodology to extract the momentum broadening for relativistic quarks, we find that the momentum distribution of quarks exhibit interesting nonperturbative features as a function of time due to correlated momentum kicks it receives from the medium, eventually going over to a diffusive regime. We extract the momentum diffusion coefficient for a mass range describing charm and bottom quarks and find sizable discrepancies from the heavy-quark limit. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevLett.132.222301 Published by the American Physical Society under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International license. What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is the problem of heavy quark momentum broadening in non - Abelian plasmas out of equilibrium. Specifically, through classical statistical real - time lattice simulations, the researchers calculated the real - time spectral functions and momentum broadening of heavy quarks in the presence of strongly occupied non - Abelian gauge fields. Based on a new method to extract the momentum broadening of relativistic heavy quarks, they found that due to the relevant momentum kicks in the medium, the momentum distribution of heavy quarks exhibits interesting non - perturbative features over time and eventually enters a diffusive state. In addition, they also extracted the momentum diffusion coefficients in the mass ranges of charm quarks and bottom quarks and found significant differences in the heavy - quark limit.
### Main problems and research background
1. **Heavy quarks as probes**: Heavy quarks (especially charm quarks and bottom quarks) are good probes of the quark - gluon plasma (QGP) formed in high - energy nuclear collisions (HIC). These heavy quarks are mainly formed in the early stages of ultra - relativistic HIC through perturbative hard - scattering processes of colliding nuclei and then interact with the QGP, recording their entire time history until hadronization.
2. **Theoretical challenges**: Despite the existence of successful phenomenological models, the theoretical description of heavy - quark dynamics still faces significant challenges. First, the QCD medium through which heavy quarks pass has non - perturbative interactions with them in the pre - equilibrium and near - equilibrium stages, and the gluon (color) - exchange process cannot be semi - classically described outside the infinite - color - number limit. Second, experimental data show that the elliptic flow \(v_2\) of charm quarks is consistent with that of light quarks, which implies that a fully relativistic treatment of charm - quark dynamics is required, rather than just a treatment near the infinite - mass limit.
### Research methods
- **Classical statistical real - time lattice simulations**: The researchers used the classical statistical real - time lattice simulation technique to generate non - Abelian gauge - field configurations and evolve the wave functions of heavy quarks in the background of these fields.
- **Extraction of the momentum diffusion coefficient \(\kappa\)**: By monitoring the change in the heavy - quark momentum distribution over time, the momentum diffusion coefficient \(\kappa\) is extracted. This involves calculating the second moment of the momentum distribution and determining the diffusion coefficient through linear fitting.
### Main findings
- **Non - perturbative features of momentum broadening**: The momentum distribution of heavy quarks exhibits non - perturbative features over time and eventually enters a diffusive state.
- **Differences in the momentum diffusion coefficient \(\kappa\)**: For the mass ranges of charm quarks and bottom quarks, the extracted momentum diffusion coefficient \(\kappa\) has significant differences from the results in the infinite - mass limit, emphasizing the importance of relativistic treatment.
- **Non - equilibrium - state effects**: The study found that in the highly occupied non - Abelian plasma in the non - equilibrium state, the momentum broadening of heavy quarks is significant, which may mean that in the initial stage of heavy - ion collisions, the elliptic flow of charm quarks and bottom quarks has already begun to accumulate.
### Conclusion
This study shows in detail for the first time the dynamical behavior of relativistic heavy quarks in highly occupied non - Abelian plasmas and proposes a new method to measure the momentum distribution of heavy quarks passing through the plasma. The research results emphasize the necessity of dealing with heavy - quark dynamics under non - equilibrium - state conditions, especially in a relativistic framework. These findings are of great significance for understanding the dynamical processes of QGP in heavy - ion collisions.
