Abstract:Space motions are given for 38 RR Lyrae (RRL) stars and 79 blue horizontal branch (BHB) stars in a ~200 deg2 area around the North Galactic Pole (NGP) using a homogeneous distance scale consistent with (m-M)0=18.52 for the LMC. The kinematics of the 26 RRL and 52 BHB stars in the 10.4 cubic kpc volume that have Z<8 kpc are not homogeneous. Our BHB sample (like that of Sirko et al. 2004b) has a zero galactic rotation (V_phi) and roughly isotropic velocity dispersions. The RRL sample shows a definite retrograde rotation (V_phi = -95+/-29 km/s) and non-isotropic velocity dispersions. The combined BHB and RRL sample has a retrograde galactic rotation (V) that is similar to that found by Majewski (1992) for his sample of subdwarfs in SA 57. The velocity dispersion of the RRL stars that have a positive W motion is significantly smaller than the dispersion of those "streaming down" with a negative W. One component of our sample (rich in RRL's) shows retrograde rotation and the streaming motion that we associate with the accretion process. The other (traced by the BHB stars) shows essentially no rotation and less evidence of streaming. These two components have HB morphologies that suggest that they may be the field star equivalents of the young and old halo globular clusters respectively.
QUANTIFYING KINEMATIC SUBSTRUCTURE IN THE MILKY WAY'S STELLAR HALO

Abstract:We present and analyze the positions, distances, and radial velocities for over 4000 blue horizontal-branch (BHB) stars in the Milky Way's halo, drawn from SDSS DR8. We search for position–velocity substructure in these data, a signature of the hierarchical assembly of the stellar halo. Using a cumulative "close pair distribution" as a statistic in the four-dimensional space of sky position, distance, and velocity, we quantify the presence of position–velocity substructure at high statistical significance among the BHB stars: pairs of BHB stars that are close in position on the sky tend to have more similar distances and radial velocities compared to a random sampling of these overall distributions. We make analogous mock observations of 11 numerical halo formation simulations, in which the stellar halo is entirely composed of disrupted satellite debris, and find a level of substructure comparable to that seen in the actually observed BHB star sample. This result quantitatively confirms the hierarchical build-up of the stellar halo through a signature in phase (position–velocity) space. In detail, the structure present in the BHB stars is somewhat less prominent than that seen in most simulated halos, quite possibly because BHB stars represent an older sub-population. BHB stars located beyond 20 kpc from the Galactic center exhibit stronger substructure than at rgc < 20 kpc.

Abstract:The rotation of the Milky Way halo in the solar vicinity is studied using kinematic data of the GAIA DR3 catalog for RR Lyrae variable stars with parallax errors of less than 20%. Two criteria were used for selecting halo stars: kinematic and spatial. In both approaches, we confirm the existence of weak rotation of the halo in the direction opposite to the rotation of the Galactic disk with velocities of km/s for the kinematic criterion and km/s for the spatial criterion.

Abstract:Although Blue Horizontal Branch (BHB) stars are commonly used to trace halo substructure, the stars bluer than (g-r)<-0.3 are ignored due to the difficulty in determining their absolute magnitudes. The blue extention of the horizontal branch (HBX) includes BHB tail stars and Extreme Horizontal Branch (EHB) stars. We present a method for identifying HBX stars in the field, using spectra and photometry from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 14 (SDSS DR14). We derive an estimate for the absolute magnitudes of BHB tail and EHB stars as a function of color, and use this relationship to calculate distances. We identify an overdensity of HBX stars that appears to trace the northern end of the Hercules-Aquila Cloud (HAC). We identify three stars that are likely part of a tidal stream, but this is not enough stars to explain the observed overdensity. Combining SDSS data with Gaia DR2 proper motions allows us to show that the orbits of the majority of the HBX stars in the overdensity are on high eccentricity orbits similar to those in the Virgo Radial Merger/Gaia-Enceladus/Gaia Sausage structure, and that the overdensity of high eccentricity orbits extends all the way to the Virgo Overdensity. We use stellar kinematics to separate the HBX stars into disk stars andhalo stars. The halo stars are primarily on highly eccentric (radial) orbits. The fraction of HBX stars that are EHBs is highest in the disk population and lowest in the low eccentricity halo stars.

Abstract:We use the TNG50 and TNG50 dark matter (DM)-only simulations from the IllustrisTNG simulation suite to conduct an updated survey of halo figure rotation in the presence of baryons. We develop a novel methodology to detect coherent figure rotation about an arbitrary axis and for arbitrary durations and apply it to a catalog of 1,577 DM halos from the DM-only run and 1,396 DM halos from the DM+baryons (DM+B) run that are free of major mergers. Figure rotation was detected in $94\%$ of DM-only halos and $82\%$ of the DM+B halos. The pattern speeds of rotations lasting $\gtrsim 1h^{-1}$ Gyr were log-normally distributed with medians of $0.25~h$ km s$^{-1}$ kpc$^{-1}$ for DM-only in agreement with past results, but $14\%$ higher at $0.29~h$ km s$^{-1}$ kpc$^{-1}$ in the DM+B halos. We find that rotation axes are typically aligned with the halo minor or major axis, in $57\%$ of DM-only halos and in $62\%$ of DM+B halos. The remaining rotation axes were not strongly aligned with any principal axis but typically lay in the plane containing the halo minor and major axes. Longer-lived rotations showed greater alignment with the halo minor axis in both simulations. Our results show that in the presence of baryons, figure rotation is marginally less common, shorter-lived, faster, and better aligned with the minor axis than in DM-only halos. This updated understanding will be consequential for future efforts to constrain figure rotation in the Milky Way dark halo using the morphology and kinematics of tidal streams.

Vertical Structure of Galactic Disk Kinematics from LAMOST K Giants

Abstract:We examine the vertical structure of Galactic disk kinematics over a Galactocentric radial distance range of R = 5–15 kpc and up to 3 kpc away from the Galactic plane, using the K-type giants surveyed by LAMOST. Based on robust measurements of three-dimensional velocity moments, a wobbly disk is detected in a phenomenological sense. An outflow dominates the radial motion of the inner disk, while in the outer disk there exist alternate outward and inward flows. The vertical bulk velocities is a combination of breathing and bending modes. A contraction-like breathing mode with amplitudes increasing with the distance to the plane and an upward bending mode dominate the vertical motion outside R 0, and there are reversed breathing and bending modes at R < R 0, with amplitudes much smaller than those outside R 0. The mean azimuthal velocity decreases with the increasing distance to the plane, with gradients shallower for larger R. Stars in the south disk are rotating faster than stars in the north. The velocity ellipsoid orientation differs between different R: in the range of 5<R<9kpc , the gradient of the tilt angle with respect to arctan(Z/R) decreases from ∼0.83 for the inner disk to ∼0.52 for the outer disk; within 9<R<15kpc , the tilt of velocity ellipsoid deviates from vertical antisymmetry. A clear flaring signature is found for both north and south disks based on the observed vertical structures of velocity ellipsoid.

Abstract:The halo of NGC 891 has been the subject of studies for more than a decade. One of its most striking features is the large asymmetry in H-$\alpha$ emission. We have taken a quantitative look at this asymmetry at different wavelengths for the first time. We propose that NGC 891 is intrinsically almost symmetric, as seen in Spitzer observations, and the large asymmetry in H-$\alpha$ emission is mostly due to dust attenuation. We quantify the additional optical depth needed to cause the observed H-$\alpha$ asymmetry. A comparison of large strips on the North East side of the galaxy with strips covering the same area in the South West we can quantify and analyze the asymmetry in the different wavelengths. From the 24 $\mu$m emission we find that the intrinsic asymmetry in star-formation in NGC 891 is small i.e., approximately 30%. The additional asymmetry in H-alpha is modeled as additional symmetric dust attenuation which extends up to ~ 40'' (1.9 kpc) above the plane of the galaxy with a mid-plane value of $\tau$=0.8 and a scale height of 0.5 kpc. This observational technique offers the possibility to quantify the effects of vertical ISM disk stability as an explanation for dust lanes in massive galaxies Dalcanton et al. (2004).

The age structure of the Milky Way's halo

Abstract:We present a new, high-resolution chronographic (age) map of the Milky Way's halo, based on the inferred ages of ~130,000 field blue horizontal-branch (BHB) stars with photometry from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. Our map exhibits a strong central concentration of BHB stars with ages greater than 12 Gyr, extending up to ~15 kpc from the Galactic center (reaching close to the solar vicinity), and a decrease in the mean ages of field stars with distance by 1-1.5 Gyr out to ~45-50 kpc, along with an apparent increase of the dispersion of stellar ages, and numerous known (and previously unknown) resolved over-densities and debris streams, including the Sagittarius Stream. These results agree with expectations from modern LambdaCDM cosmological simulations, and support the existence of a dual (inner/outer) halo system, punctuated by the presence of over-densities and debris streams that have not yet completely phase-space mixed.

Abstract:In a pioneering effort, Preston et al. reported that the colors of blue horizontal-branch (BHB) stars in the halo of the Galaxy shift with distance, from regions near the Galactic center to about 12 kpc away, and interpreted this as a correlated variation in the ages of halo stars, from older to younger, spanning a range of a few Gyrs. We have applied this approach to a sample of some 4700 spectroscopically confirmed BHB stars selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey to produce the first "chronographic map" of the halo of the Galaxy. We demonstrate that the mean de-reddened g$-$r color, <(g$-$r)o>, increases outward in the Galaxy from $-$0.22 to $-$0.08 (over a color window spanning [$-$0.3:0.0]) from regions close to the Galactic center to ~40 kpc, independent of the metallicity of the stars. Models of the expected shift in the color of the field BHB stars based on modern stellar evolutionary codes confirm that this color gradient can be associated with an age difference of roughly 2-2.5 Gyrs, with the oldest stars concentrated in the central ~15 kpc of the Galaxy. Within this central region, the age difference spans a mean color range of about 0.05 mag (~0.8 Gyrs). Furthermore, we show that chronographic maps can be used to identify individual substructures, such as the Sagittarius Stream, and overdensities in the direction of Virgo and Monoceros, based on the observed contrast in their mean BHB colors with respect to the foreground/background field population.

Abstract:AbstractA major uncertainty in the determination of the mass profile of the Milky Way using stellar kinematics in the halo is the poorly determined anisotropy parameter, , where σr is the Galactocentric radial velocity dispersion, and σθ and σφ are the tangential components of the velocity dispersion. We have used a sample of over 24,000 Galactic halo K giant and blue horizontal branch stars from the LAMOST stellar spectroscopic survey and SDSS/SEGUE, combined with proper motions from Gaia Data Release 2, to measure β(rgc) over a wide range of Galactocentric distances rgc from 5 to 80 kpc. Kinematic substructures have been carefully removed to reveal the underlying diffuse stellar halo prior to measuring β. We find that orbits are generally radial (β > 0) and β is constant out to distances of about 40 kpc, with a dependence on metallicity of the stars, such that β declines with lower metallicity. Similar behavior is seen in both the K giant and BHB samples.
The structure of the Galactic halo: SDSS versus SuperCOSMOS

Abstract:The halo structure at high Galactic latitudes near both the north and south poles is studied using SDSS and SuperCOSMOS data. For the south cap halo, the archive of the SuperCOSMOS photographic photometry sky survey is used. The coincident source rate between SuperCOSMOS data in $B_J$ band from $16^m.5$ to $20^m.5$ and SDSS data is about 92%, in a common sky area in the south. While that in the $R_F$ band is about 85% from $16^m.5$ to $19^m.5$. Transformed to the SuperCOSMOS system and downgraded to the limiting magnitudes of SuperCOSMOS, the star counts in the northern Galactic cap from SDSS show up to an $16.9\pm6.3%$ asymmetric ratio (defined as relative fluctuations over the rotational symmetry structure) in the $B_J$ band, and up to $13.5\pm6.7%$ asymmetric ratio in the $R_F$ band. From SuperCOSMOS $B_J$ and $R_F$ bands, the structure of the southern Galactic hemisphere does not show the same obvious asymmetric structures as the northern sky does in both the original and downgraded SDSS star counts. An axisymmetric halo model with n=2.8 and q=0.7 can fit the projected number density from SuperCOSMOS fairly well, with an average error of about 9.17%. By careful analysis of the difference of star counts between the downgraded SDSS northern halo data and SuperCOSMOS southern halo data, it is shown that no asymmetry can be detected in the south Galactic cap at the accuracy of SuperCOSMOS, and the Virgo overdensity is likely a foreign component in the Galactic halo.

The Vertical Structure of the Outer Milky Way HI Disk

Abstract:We examine the outer Galactic HI disk for deviations from the b=0 plane by constructing maps of disk surface density, mean height, and thickness. We find that the Galactic warp is well described by a vertical offset plus two Fourier modes of frequency 1 and 2, all of which grow with Galactocentric radius. Adding the m=2 mode accounts for the large asymmetry between the northern and southern warps. We use a Morlet wavelet transform to investigate the spatial and frequency localization of higher frequency modes; these modes are often referred to as "scalloping." We find that the m=10 and 15 scalloping modes are well above the noise, but localized; this suggests that the scalloping does not pervade the whole disk, but only local regions.

Abstract:We present an improved analysis of halo substructure traced by RR Lyrae stars in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) stripe 82 region. With the addition of SDSS-II data, a revised selection method based on new ugriz light curve templates results in a sample of 483 RR Lyrae stars that is essentially free of contamination. The main result from our first study persists: the spatial distribution of halo stars at galactocentric distances 5-100 kpc is highly inhomogeneous. At least 20% of halo stars within 30 kpc from the Galactic center can be statistically associated with substructure. We present strong direct evidence, based on both RR Lyrae stars and main-sequence stars, that the halo stellar number density profile significantly steepens beyond a Galactocentric distance of similar to 30 kpc, and a larger fraction of the stars are associated with substructure. By using a novel method that simultaneously combines data for RR Lyrae and main-sequence stars, and using photometric metallicity estimates for main-sequence stars derived from deep co-added u-band data, we measure the metallicity of the Sagittarius dSph tidal stream (trailing arm) toward R. A. similar to 2(h)-3(h) and decl. similar to 0 degrees to be 0.3 dex higher ([Fe/H] = -1.2) than that of surrounding halo field stars. Together with a similar result for another major halo substructure, the Monoceros stream, these results support theoretical predictions that an early forming, smooth inner halo, is metal-poor compared to high surface brightness material that have been accreted onto a later-forming outer halo. The mean metallicity of stars in the outer halo that are not associated with detectable clumps may still be more metal-poor than the bulk of inner-halo stars, as has been argued from other data sets.
Mapping the anisotropic Galactic stellar halo with Blue Horizontal Branch stars

Abstract:We use Legacy Survey photometric data to probe the stellar halo in multiple directions of the sky using a probabilistic methodology to identify Blue Horizontal Branch (BHB) stars. The measured average radial density profile follows a double power law in the range $ 5 < r_{gc}/{\rm kpc} < 120$, with a density break at $r_{gc}\approx20$ kpc. This description, however, falls short, depending on the chosen line-of-sight, with some regions showing no signature of a break in the profile and a wide range of density slopes, e.g. outer slope $-5.5 \lesssim \alpha_{out} \lesssim -4$, pointing towards a highly anisotropic stellar halo. This explains in part the wide range of density profiles reported in the literature owing to different tracers and sky coverage. Using our detailed 3-D stellar halo density map, we quantify the shape of the Pisces overdensity associated with the transient wake response of the Galaxy's (dark) halo to the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). Measured in the LMC's coordinate system, Pisces stands above the background, is 60 degrees long and 25 degrees wide and aligned with the LMC's orbit. This would correspond to a wake width of $\sim 32$ kpc at $\sim 70$ kpc. We do not find a statistically significant signature of the collective response in density as previously reported in the literature measured with K giant stars, despite our larger numbers. We release the catalogue constructed in this study with 95,446 possible BHB stars and their BHB probability.

Abstract:The anisotropy parameter β characterizes the extent to which orbits in stellar systems are predominantly radial or tangential and is likely to constrain, for the stellar halo of the Milky Way, scenarios for its formation and evolution. We have measured β as a function of Galactocentric radius from 5 to 100 kpc for 7664 metal-poor ([Fe/H] < −1.3) halo K giants from the LAMOST catalog with line-of-sight velocities and distances, matched to proper motions from the second Gaia data release. We construct full 6D positions and velocities for the K giants to directly measure the three components of the velocity dispersion (σr, σθ, σϕ) (in spherical coordinates). We find that the orbits in the halo are radial over our full Galactocentric distance range reaching over 100 kpc. The anisotropy remains remarkably unchanged with Galactocentric radius from approximately 5–25 kpc, with an amplitude that depends on the metallicity of the stars, dropping from β ≈ 0.9 for −1.8 ≤ [Fe/H] < −1.3 (for the bulk of the stars) to β ≈ 0.6 for the lowest metallicities ([Fe/H] < −1.8). Considering our sample as a whole, β ≈ 0.8 and beyond 25 kpc, the orbits gradually become less radial and anisotropy decreases to β < 0.3 past 100 kpc. Within 8 kpc, β < 0.8. The measurement of anisotropy is affected by substructure and streams, particularly beyond a Galactocentric distance of approximately 25 kpc, where the Sagittarius stream is prominent in the data. These results are complimentary to recent analysis of simulations by Loebman et al. and of SDSS/Gaia DR1 data by Belokurov et al.
Halo Effect on Bar Rotation in Galaxies

Abstract:The effect of a massive gravitating halo on the rotation of an ellipsoidal bar in disk galaxies is studied. The method is based on calculating the moment of forces between a bar and a halo using a function of their mutual gravitational energy. Two models are examined to test the new method: a simple variant with uniform components and a more complex variant in which the halo is represented by a layered-heterogeneous ellipsoid with a parabolic density law. For both models expressions are obtained for the mutual gravitational energy of the bar and the halo, the Lagrangian is constructed, and differential equations for the nonlinear rotational oscillations of the bar are derived. These equations describe the rotation of a bar with a variable angular velocity. The frequencies and periods of the librations of the angular velocity of the bar are found both in the general nonlinear case and in the approximation of harmonic oscillations. It is found that taking the inhomogeneity of the halo into account can significantly (by roughly a factor of 2) increase the period of these oscillations.

Kinematical and Ellipsoidal Properties of the Inner-Halo Hot Subdwarfs Observed in Gaia DR3 and LAMOST DR7

Abstract:Here, we report the kinematical parameters of inner-halo hot subdwarfs located within (d lower than or equal 15 kpc) at high Galactic latitudes (b^o greater than or equal 20). The study included three program stars for one of the extreme He-rich groups (eHe-1) with eccentricity (e=0.65) and the z-component of the angular momentum (J_z=4288.66 kpc km s-1), the inner halo program I with 121 points (T_eff greater than or equal 24,000) and their subsections, i.e. inner halo program II (sdB; 79 points) with (40,000 greater than or equal T_eff greater than or equal 24,000) and inner halo program III (sdO; 42 points) with (80,000 greater than or equal T_eff greater than or equal 40,000). First, we calculated the spatial velocities (U_avg, V_avg, W_avg; km s-1) along the Galactic coordinates and subsequently their subsections sdB and sdO. Second, we calculated the vertex longitudes (l_2) and the Solar motion (S_sun=41.24 +/- 6.42 km s-1) as well as their subsections. Finally, based on the kinematic relation of the ratio (s_2/s_1) and our previously computed numerical value of the angular rotation rate (|A-B|=26.07 +/- 5.10; km s-1 kpc-1), we obtained the average Oort's constant.

Abstract:Using data from the Gaia satellite's Radial Velocity Spectrometer Data Release 3 (RVS, DR3), we find a new and robust feature in the phase space distribution of halo stars. It is a prominent ridge at constant energy and with angular momentum $L_z>0$. We run test particle simulations of a stellar halo-like distribution of particles in a realistic Milky Way potential with a rotating bar. We observe similar structures generated in the simulations from the trapping of particles in resonances with the bar, particularly at the corotation resonance. Many of the orbits trapped at the resonances are halo-like, with large vertical excursions from the disc. The location of the observed structure in energy space is consistent with a bar pattern speed in the range $\Omega_\mathrm{b}\approx35-40$ km s$^{-1}$ kpc$^{-1}$. Overall, the effect of the resonances is to give the inner stellar halo a mild, net spin in the direction of the bar's rotation. As the distribution of the angular momentum becomes asymmetric, a population of stars with positive mean $L_z$ and low vertical action is created. The variation of the average rotational velocity of the simulated stellar halo with radius is similar to the behaviour of metal-poor stars in data from the APOGEE survey. Though the effects of bar resonances have long been known in the Galactic disc, this is strong evidence that the bar can drive changes even in the diffuse and extended stellar halo through its resonances.

Abstract:The kinematics of the stellar halo hold important clues to the assembly history and mass distribution of the Galaxy. In this study, we map the kinematics of stars across the Galactic halo with the H3 Survey. We find a complex distribution that breaks both azimuthal symmetry about the $Z$-axis and mirror symmetry about the Galactic plane. This asymmetry manifests as large variations in the radial velocity dispersion $\sigma_r$ from as ``cold'' as 70 $\text{km}\text{ s}^{-1}$ to as ``hot'' as 160 $\text{km}\text{ s}^{-1}$. We use stellar chemistry to distinguish accreted stars from in-situ stars in the halo, and find that the accreted population has higher $\sigma_r$ and radially biased orbits, while the in-situ population has lower $\sigma_r$ and isotropic orbits. As a result, the Galactic halo kinematics are highly heterogeneous and poorly approximated as being spherical or axisymmetric. We measure radial profiles of $\sigma_r$ and the anisotropy parameter $\beta$ over Galactocentric radii $10-80\text{ kpc}$, and find that discrepancies in the literature are due to the nonspherical geometry and heterogeneous nature of the halo. Investigating the effect of strongly asymmetric $\sigma_r$ and $\beta$ on equilibrium models is a path forward to accurately constraining the Galactic gravitational field, including its total mass.
