Abstract:The end of the publishing year for the Australian Journal of Forensic Sciences (TAJF) has once again come around, and upon reflection it has certainly been a busy year indeed! If one counts the extended abstracts published from the 23 rd IAFS, incorporating the 26 th ANZFSS, Symposium held in 2023, then a total of 110 articles were published in 2024. I believe the latter would be a record for the Journal and is a testament to the efforts made by not only the submitting authors and reviewers, but the editorial and production team that support such efforts! I would like to personally thank you all for your help in ensuring the continued success of the Journal and look forward to working with you in the new year.

Abstract:The Queensland DNA Inquiry, conducted by Walter Sofronoff KC, unearthed substantial deficiencies in forensic DNA practices, highlighting the need for rigorous scientific standards and improved management within forensic laboratories. The inquiry's final report made 123 recommendations to overhaul these practices, prompting the Queensland Government to pledge over $95 million towards restructuring forensic services. This paper reflects on a workshop convened by the Victorian Chapter of the Australian Academy of Forensic Sciences, which explored the implications of these recommendations for other jurisdictions. The workshop facilitated a rich dialogue among legal, scientific, and government sectors, emphasizing the necessity of a holistic approach to forensic science within the justice system. It underscored the importance of impartiality in forensic services, the need for fit-for-purpose operational frameworks, and robust quality management to uphold the integrity of forensic evidence. By examining these themes, the paper contributes to ongoing discussions about enhancing forensic science's role in ensuring justice and underscores the potential for significant reforms catalysed by the inquiry's findings.

Towards more relevance in forensic science research and development

Abstract:Many different issues have been identified in forensic science for more than 10 years. While quality management has often been suggested as a path forward, research is generally considered as an essential part of the solution. Through an overview of current forensic science research, this paper aims at evaluating if and how research answer the challenges forensic science is currently facing. While forensic related publications have massively increased over the years, approximately half of the publications were published in non-forensic sources, indicating that forensic science research tends to be led by other disciplines. Over the years, forensic science research has remained largely oriented towards methodological and technological development rather than relevance to the forensic science discipline and practice. Practical implementation of the techniques is rarely discussed from a forensic perspective, and thus research rarely move from the "proof-of-concept" stage to its utilisation in case investigation. The digital transformation also generated a massive increase of data, making it challenging to find the relevant pieces of information in the mass of "forensic" publications available on-line. Thus, we propose to refocus forensic science research on forensic fundamental and practical questions to strengthen the discipline and its impact on crime investigation and security issues. Our propositions represent an incentive to further discuss forensic science research and knowledge transmission through the definition of a common culture within the community, focusing on common fundamental knowledge such as a better understanding of the concept of trace and its case-based information content.

Abstract:This study conducts a comprehensive analysis of forensic toxicology research trends, publication patterns, author's contributions, and collaboration. Utilizing the Scopus database, we scrutinized 3259 articles across 348 journals spanning from 1975 to 2023. Our analysis employed diverse software tools such as VOSviewer, RStudio, MS Excel, and MS Access to dissect various publication aspects. We observed a notable surge in publications post-2007, indicating heightened research interest. Leading contributors included the United States, Germany, and Italy, with Logan B.K. emerging as the most prolific author. Forensic Science International stood out as the primary journal, publishing 888 articles and accruing significant citations. Keyword co-occurrences such as "forensic toxicology," "forensic science," and "toxicology" underscored core thematic areas in the field. Moreover, extensive research collaboration, especially among Western nations in Europe, was evident. This study underscores the imperative for enhanced collaboration between developing and developed nations to foster further advancements in forensic science. Strengthened partnerships can catalyze innovation, facilitate knowledge dissemination, and address emerging challenges, thereby propelling the field of forensic toxicology toward new frontiers of discovery and application.

International Journal of Child and Adolescent Resilience

Abstract:Dear readers, I am pleased to introduce the 2022 Issue of the International Journal of Child and Adolescent Resilience (IJCAR). This issue includes: six regular articles on varying aspects of hardships and resilience in different populations; three scoping review papers on trauma and maltreatment; two clinical interventions surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic; and one brief report on implementing trauma informed care. In particular, the six regular articles shed light on hardships experienced by differing populations and their resilience. Firstly, Blais et al. examined experiences of family victimization of sexual and gender minority adolescents and emerging adults, and the factors promoting well-being and resilience. Secondly, Drawson and colleagues implemented a measurement tool that was used to assess the well-being of First Nations children. Thirdly, Langevin and colleagues investigated the role of family relationships and psychological distress in relation to four child maltreatment subtypes, as well as child abuse potential in young mothers in their prospective longitudinal study. Fourthly, Mueller et al. aimed to examine children and adolescents’ emotional and mental experiences after enduring a sport-related concussion, with intentions to help athletes during their recovery. Fifthly, Romano and Stenason emphasized two in-service training programs to help provide support to resource parents for their work as caregivers. Finally, Summers and Van Camp aimed to gain insight into young adults’ experiences during adolescence with education on sexual consent and coercion, with intentions to obtain their perceptions and provide possible curriculum improvement. Furthermore, the 2022 issue of IJCAR also includes three scoping review papers that examined trauma and maltreatment. This section focused on bridging gaps in the literature related to: identifying theoretical or conceptual frameworks which have been utilized when explaining victim-to-victim cycles of maltreatment (Marshall et al.); exploring youth with adverse childhood experiences (Wei et al.); and determining the relationship between self-compassion and psychological distress, and how this differs across child maltreatment types (Wong et al.). The current issue further denotes the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic with two clinical intervention studies. Berthelot and colleagues evaluated the acceptability of the STEP-COVID program, which is an online synchronous prenatal intervention to support wellness, mentalization, and resilience during the pandemic. Santavicca and colleagues emphasized an intervention focused on mitigating COVID-19 vaccine tension in schools, while also proposing prevention and interventions for conflicts surrounding COVID-19 vaccination. Finally, the issue ends with a brief report by Huartson et al., regarding the implementation of a pilot trauma-informed care initiative with intentions to foster resilience in a maternity care clinic, which focused on determining barriers and facilitators for family physicians, when questioning patients about their adverse childhood experiences. Thus, we encourage you to read these various articles to obtain rich information about ongoing research in the field of resilience. Abstract:Dear Readers, Welcome to the fourth issue of Volume 66 of the Journal of Gerontological Social Work . It features seven research articles and two media reviews. The issue opens with Krohne and colleagues' qualitative study of older adults' experiences of befriending programs in Norway and the friendships that develop through the volunteer home visits. Next, Cho et al. share a mixed methods study examining older adults' motivations for long-term residency in a Village, which is a "membership-driven organization based on neighbors helping neighbors age in place." Results indicate that residents with altruistic goals tended to remain in the Village long term. Article three, by Sun et al., uses data from the Centers for Disease Control and the U.S. Census Bureau to examine the social determinants associated with deaths due to alcohol, drugs, and suicide, known as "deaths of despair," among older adults in Missouri. Results indicate an upward trend in such deaths since 2007–2009, with the steepest increase among African Americans beginning in 2013–2015. Next, Buckley and Burnette use a risk and resilience framework to examine the protective effects of psychological sense of community on self-rated health and quality of life for older adults in Puerto Rico two years after Hurricane María. Findings indicate that psychological sense of community, defined in part as "an individual's perception that they are part of a social structure that is supportive, present and dependable" can be a protective factor for older adults who experience natural disasters. Article five, by Zell and colleagues, reports findings from an online needs assessment of Michigan's sixteen Area Agencies on Aging related to services provided to caregivers of persons with dementia; the range of services provided are described as well as the anticipated growth trends related to caregiver services. Next, Sun and colleagues share details from a mixed method study of the experiences of older adult school volunteers who transitioned from in-person tutoring to letter writing and online tutoring during the COVID-19 pandemic. Results indicate that volunteers felt they made a positive impact on students' lives during a difficult time but were challenged to facilitate engagement in the new communication mediums. Article seven, by Lehning and colleagues, presents findings from a study that details the complex association between service coordination and low-income senior housing residents' preference to age in place, focusing on the economically vulnerable. Abstract:Skills and knowledge gaps frequently exist between forensic educational programs and practical forensic laboratory needs. An educational outreach project involving three post-secondary academic institutions and a large multidisciplinary forensic laboratory was created to provide lectures to students, enable mentorship with forensic scientists, and provide an interactive experience within the forensic laboratory. Mentorship mixer exercises encouraged meaningful interactions between students and scientists, creating opportunities for practical discussion on employment requirements, optimal class selections based on students' interests and forensic science requirements, and better understanding of the daily tasks and duties of operational forensic scientists. Feedback from students, professors, and forensic mentors have resulted in program improvements which will inform the educational outreach initiative going forward, including broader community outreach.
