Abstract:We revisit in detail the paradox of black hole information loss due to Hawking radiation as tunneling. We compute the amount of information encoded in correlations among Hawking radiations for a variety of black holes, including the Schwarzchild black hole. the Reissner-Nordstrom black hole, the Kerr black hole, and the Kerr-Newman black hole. The special case of tunneling through a quantum horizon is also considered. Within a phenomenological treatment based on the accepted emission probability spectrum from a black hole, we find that information is leaked out hidden in the correlations of Hawking radiation. The recovery of this previously unaccounted for information helps to conserve the total entropy of a system composed of a black hole plus its radiations. We thus conclude, irrespective of the microscopic picture for black hole collapsing, the associated radiation process: Hawking radiation as tunneling, is consistent with unitarity as required by quantum mechanics. Abstract:Information loss paradox is still a challenging problem in theoretical physics. In this essay, for statics BTZ black holes and Schwarzschild black holes, we propose a simple solution based on the similarity between black holes and topological insulators. That is, the Hawking radiation is pure due to the entanglement between the left-moving sector and right-moving sector of the Hawking radiation. And this entanglement may be detected in an analogue black hole in the near future.

Abstract:Using standard statistical method, we discover the existence of correlations among Hawking radiations (of tunneled particles) from a black hole. The information carried by such correlations is quantified by mutual information between sequential emissions. Through a careful counting of the entropy taken out by the emitted particles, we show that the black hole radiation as tunneling is an entropy conservation process. While information is leaked out through the radiation, the total entropy is conserved. Thus, we conclude the black hole evaporation process is unitary.

Abstract:The black hole information paradox is a long-standing problem in theoretical physics. Despite some recent progress, many issues remain open and should be clarified. In this paper, we study the information paradox of Kerr black holes and propose a new resolution with precise physical meanings. We compute the time-dependent Hawking radiation rate during the Kerr black hole evaporation using both the gravity and the conformal field theory approaches. Based on the consistent result from both approaches, we formulate the information paradox on top of the time evolution of the entanglement entropy between a Kerr black hole and its Hawking radiation quanta. To resolve the information paradox, we carefully keep track of the ingoing Hawking quanta through the Kerr black hole as a quantum wormhole and microscopically derive the Page curve as a time-delay effect. The result matches the previously obtained semi-classical Page curve and has a natural interpretation in quantum information theory.

Abstract:It was found in [Phys.Lett.B 675 (2009) 98] that information is conserved in the process of black hole evaporation, by using the tunneling formulism and considering the correlations between emitted particles. In this Letter, we shall include quantum gravity effects, by taking into account of the log-area correction to Bekenstein-Hawking entropy. The correlation between successively emitted particles is calculated, with Planck-scale corrections. By considering the black hole evaporation process, entropy conservation is checked, and the existence of black hole remnant is emphasized. We conclue in this case information can leak out through the radiation and black hole evaporation is still a unitary process.

Abstract:We show that for the thermal spectrum of Hawking radiation black hole's information loss paradox may still be present, even if including the entanglement information stored in the entangled Minkowski vacuum. And to avoid this inconsistency, the spectrum of Hawking radiation must be nonthermal. After reconsidering the derivation of Hawking effect, we find that the thermal spectrum is actually resulted from the geometric optics approximation in deriving the Bogolubov coefficients. When treated a little more accurately, we obtain some nonthermal spectrum for the Hawing radiation, which reduces to the thermal one in the geometric optics approximation.

Abstract:Since the discovery of Hawking radiation, its consistency with quantum theory has been widely questioned. In the widely described picture, irrespective of what initial state a black hole starts with before collapsing, it eventually evolves into a thermal state of Hawking radiations after the black hole is exhausted. This scenario violates the principle of unitarity as required for quantum mechanics and leads to the acclaimed ‘‘information loss paradox’’. This paradox has become an obstacle or a reversed touchstone for any possible theory to unify the gravity and quantum mechanics. Based on the results from Hawking radiation as tunneling, we recently show that Hawking radiations can carry off all information about the collapsed matter in a black hole. After discovering the existence of information-carrying correlation, we show in great detail that entropy is conserved for Hawking radiation based on standard probability theory and statistics. We claim that information previously considered lost remains hidden inside Hawking radiation. More specifically, it is encoded into correlations between Hawking radiations. Our study thus establishes harmony between Hawking radiation and the unitarity of quantum mechanics, which establishes the basis for a significant milestone toward resolving the long-standing information loss paradox. The paper provides a brief review of the exciting development on Hawking radiation. In addition to summarize our own work on this subject, we compare and address other related studies.

Abstract:In both classical and quantum world, information cannot appear or disappear. This fundamental principle, however, is questioned for a black hole, by the acclaimed "information loss paradox." Based on the conservation laws of energy, charge, and angular momentum, we recently show the total information encoded in the correlations among Hawking radiations equals exactly to the same amount previously considered lost, assuming the nonthermal spectrum of Parikh and Wilczek. Thus the information loss paradox can be falsified through experiments by detecting correlations, for instance, through measuring the covariances of Hawking radiations from black holes, such as the manmade ones speculated to appear in LHC experiments. The affirmation of information conservation in Hawking radiation will shine new light on the unification of gravity with quantum mechanics.

Abstract: A recent article by Mathur attempts a "precise formulation" for the paradox of black hole information loss [S. D. Mathur, arXiv:1108.0302v2 (hep-th)]. We point out that a key component of the above work, which refers to entangled pairs inside and outside of the horizon and their associated entropy gain or information loss during black hole evaporation, is a presumptuous false outcome not backed by the very foundation of physics. The very foundation of Mathur's above work is thus incorrect. We further show that within the framework of Hawking radiation as tunneling the so-called small corrections are sufficient to resolve the information loss problem.

Abstract:We revisit the tunneling process from a Schwarzschild black hole in the noncommutative spacetime and obtain the nonthermal tunneling probability. In such nonthermal spectrum, the correlations are discovered, which can carry the information about the noncommutativity. Thus this enlightens a way to find the noncommutative information in the Hawking radiation. The entropy is also shown to be conserved in the whole radiation process, which implies that the unitarity is held even for the Hawking radiation from noncommutative black holes. Abstract:In 1974 Steven Hawking showed that black holes emit thermal radiation, which eventually causes them to evaporate. The problem of the fate of information in this process is known as the "black hole information paradox". Two main types of resolution postulate either a fundamental loss of information in Nature -- hence the breakdown of quantum mechanics -- or some sort of new physics, e.g. quantum gravity, which guarantee the global preservation of unitarity. Here we explore the second possibility with the help of recent developments in continuous-variable quantum information. Concretely, we employ the solution to the Gaussian quantum marginal problem to show that the thermality of all individual Hawking modes is consistent with a global pure state of the radiation. Surprisingly, we find out that the mods of radiation of an astrophysical black hole are thermal until the very last burst. In contrast, the single-mode thermality of Hawking radiation originating from microscopic black holes, expected to evaporate through several quanta, is not excluded, though there are constraints on modes' frequencies. Our result paves the way towards a systematic study of multi-mode correlations in Hawking radiation.

The solution to the Black Hole information paradox

Abstract:The information paradox suggests that the black hole loses information when it emits radiation. In this way, the spectrum of radiation corresponds to a mixed (non-pure) quantum state even if the internal state generating the black-hole is expected to be pure in essence. In this paper we propose an argument solving this paradox by understanding the process of spontaneous symmetry breaking when the black-hole selects one among the many possible ground states, emitting then radiation as a consequence of it. Here the particle operator number is the order parameter. This mechanism explains the connection between the density matrix corresponding to the pure state describing the black-hole state and the density matrix describing the spectrum of radiation (mixed quantum state). From this perspective, we can recover the black-hole information from the superposition principle applied to the different possible order parameters (particle number operators).

Abstract:Hawking's seminal discovery of black hole evaporation was based on the semi-classical, perturbative method. Whether black hole evaporation may result in the loss of information remains undetermined. The solution to this paradox would most likely rely on the knowledge of the end-life of the evaporation, which evidently must be in the non-perturbative regime. Here we reinterpret the Hawking radiation as the tunneling of instantons, which is inherently non-perturbative. For definitiveness, we invoke the picture of shell–anti-shell pair production and show that it is equivalent to that of instanton tunneling. We find that such a shell pair production picture can help to elucidate firewalls and ER=EPR conjectures that attempt to solve the information paradox, and may be able to address the end-life issue toward an ultimate resolution.

Abstract:By entangling soft massless particles, one can create an arbitrarily large amount of entanglement entropy that carries an arbitrarily small amount of energy. By dropping this entropy into the black hole (b.h.), one can increase the b.h. entropy by an amount that violates the Bekenstein bound or any other reasonable bound, leading to a version of the b.h. information paradox that does not involve Hawking radiation. Among the many proposed solutions for the standard b.h. information paradox with Hawking radiation, only a few can also resolve this version without Hawking radiation. The assumption that both versions should be resolved in the same way significantly helps to reduce the number of possible resolutions.

Abstract:Information about the collapsed matter in a black hole will be lost if Hawking radiations are truly thermal. Recent studies discover that information can be transmitted from a black hole by Hawking radiations, due to their spectrum deviating from exact thermality when backreaction is considered. In this paper, we focus on the spectroscopic features of Hawking radiation from a Schwarzschild black hole, contrasting the differences between the nonthermal and thermal spectra. Of great interest, we find that the energy covariances of Hawking radiations for the thermal spectrum are exactly zero, while the energy covariances are nontrivial for the nonthermal spectrum. Consequently, the nonthermal spectrum can be distinguished from the thermal one by counting the energy covariances of successive emissions, which provides an avenue towards experimentally testing the long-standing "information loss paradox.'' UV Effects and Short-Lived Hawking Radiation: Alternative Resolution of Information Paradox

Abstract:This chapter suggests an alternative solution to the black-hole information paradox by proposing that Hawking radiation ceases around the scrambling time due to trans-Planckian effects inherent in string theory. We consider two toy models in the literature that incorporate stringy effects. The first model utilizes the generalized uncertainty principle, which introduces a minimal length. The second model is inspired by string field theory, where interactions are exponentially suppressed in the UV limit. Both models indicate an early termination of Hawking radiation around the scrambling time, resulting in negligible evaporated energy and a predominantly classical black hole.

Abstract:For Hawking radiation, treated as a tunneling process, the no-hair theorem of black hole together with the law of energy conservation is utilized to postulate that the tunneling rate only depends on the external qualities (e.g., the mass for the Schwarzschild black hole) and the energy of the radiated particle. This postulate is justified by the WKB approximation for calculating the tunneling probability. Based on this postulate, a general formula for the tunneling probability is derived without referring to the concrete form of black hole metric. This formula implies an intrinsic correlation between the successive processes of the black hole radiation of two or more particles. It also suggests a kind of entropy conservation and thus resolves the puzzle of black hole information loss in some sense.

Abstract:We demonstrate that at the rim of photon sphere of a black hole the quantum collective transition takes place in any multiparticle system of indistinguishable particles at passing inward this limiting sphere. This transition is related to the change of the homotopy class of particle trajectories at this sphere causing the local decay of quantum statistics associated with the emission of radiation taking away the energy and entropy of the infalling matter. The matter bereft of its former entropy smoothly passes next (in the proper time) the event horizon without any violation of the Einstein equivalence principle nor of the quantum unitarity. No firewall is required on the event horizon because the information does not get lost in the black hole, having previously escaped into outer space at the distance of one and a half of Schwarzschild radius from the black hole central singularity.

Abstract:Forty years after the discovery of Hawking radiation, its exact nature remains elusive. If Hawking radiation does not carry any information out from the ever shrinking black hole, it seems that unitarity is violated once the black hole completely evaporates. On the other hand, attempts to recover information via quantum entanglement lead to the firewall controversy. Amid the confusions, the possibility that black hole evaporation stops with a "remnant" has remained unpopular and is often dismissed due to some "undesired properties" of such an object. Nevertheless, as in any scientific debate, the pros and cons of any proposal must be carefully scrutinized. We fill in the void of the literature by providing a timely review of various types of black hole remnants, and provide some new thoughts regarding the challenges that black hole remnants face in the context of the information loss paradox and its latest incarnation, namely the firewall controversy. The importance of understanding the role of curvature singularity is also emphasized, after all there remains a possibility that the singularity cannot be cured even by quantum gravity. In this context a black hole remnant conveniently serves as a cosmic censor. We conclude that a remnant remains a possible end state of Hawking evaporation, and if it contains large interior geometry, may help to ameliorate the information loss paradox and the firewall controversy. We hope that this will raise some interests in the community to investigate remnants more critically but also more thoroughly.
