Abstract:Let $\mathbb{F}$ be the function field of a curve over an algebraically closed field with $\operatorname{char}(\mathbb{F})\ne2,3$, and let $E/\mathbb{F}$ be an elliptic curve. Then for all finite separable extensions $\mathbb{K}/\mathbb{F}$ and all non-torsion points $P\in{E(\mathbb{K})}$, the $\mathbb{F}$-normalized canonical height of $P$ is bounded below by \[ \hat{h}_E(P) \ge \frac{1}{4570\cdot h_{\mathbb{F}}(j_E)^{2}\cdot [\mathbb{K}:\mathbb{F}]^{2}}. \]

Abstract:Amoroso and Masser proved that for every real $\epsilon > 0$, there exists a constant $c(\epsilon)>0$, such that for every algebraic number $\alpha$ with $\mathbb{Q}(\alpha)/\mathbb{Q}$ being a Galois extension, the height of $\alpha$ is either 0 or at least $c(\epsilon) [\mathbb{Q}(\alpha):\mathbb{Q}]^{-\epsilon}$. In this article we establish an explicit version of this theorem.

Abstract:We compare general inequalities between invariants of number fields and invariants of abelian varieties over number fields. On the number field side, we remark that there is only a finite number of non-CM number fields with bounded regulator. On the abelian side, assuming the height conjecture of Lang and Silverman, we obtain a Northcott property for the regulator on the set of abelian varieties with dense rational points over a number field. This amounts to say that the arithmetic of CM fields is similar, with respect to the invariants considered here, to the arithmetic of abelian varieties over a number field having a non Zariski dense Mordell-Weil group.

Almost ordinary Abelian surfaces over global function fields with application to integral points

Abstract:Let $A$ be a non-isotrivial almost ordinary Abelian surface with possibly bad reductions over a global function field of odd characteristic $p$. Suppose $\Delta$ is an infinite set of positive integers, such that $\left(\frac{m}{p}\right)=1$ for $\forall m\in \Delta$. If $A$ doesn't admit any global real multiplication, we prove the existence of infinitely many places modulo which the reduction of $A$ has endomorphism ring containing $\mathbb{Z}[x]/(x^2-m)$ for some $m\in \Delta$. This generalizes the $S$-integrality conjecture for elliptic curves over number fields, as proved in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="math/0509485" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/math/0509485">arXiv:math/0509485</a>, to the setting of Abelian surfaces over global function fields. As a corollary, we show that there are infinitely many places modulo which $A$ is not simple, generalizing the main result of <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1812.11679" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1812.11679">arXiv:1812.11679</a> to the non-ordinary case.

Arithmetic rank bounds for abelian varieties over function fields

Abstract:It follows from the Grothendieck-Ogg-Shafarevich formula that the rank of an abelian variety (with trivial trace) defined over the function field of a curve is bounded by a quantity which depends on the genus of the base curve and on bad reduction data. Using a function field version of classical $\ell$-descent techniques, we derive an arithmetic refinement of this bound, extending previous work of the second and third authors from elliptic curves to abelian varieties, and improving on their result in the case of elliptic curves. When the abelian variety is the Jacobian of a hyperelliptic curve, we produce a more explicit $2$-descent map. Then we apply this machinery to studying points on the Jacobians of certain genus $2$ curves over $k(t)$, where $k$ is some perfect base field of characteristic not $2$.

Abstract:For any abelian function field K (i.e. any subfield of a cyclotomic function field L = k (Lambda(P)) over the rational function field k) with conductor being an irreducible polynomial over a finite field of odd characteristic, by studying the Carlitz-module structure and the character group of K, an explicit upper bound and a calculating formula of the relative divisor class number h(-) (K) of K are given. Our calculated results of K develop Rosen's recent results of L.
An effective version of Fekete's theorem

Abstract:A classical result of Fekete gives necessary conditions on a compact set in the complex plane so that it contains infinitely many sets of conjugate algebraic integers. We prove an effective version of Fekete's theorem in terms of a height function. As an application, we give a lower bound on the growth of the leading coefficient of certain polynomial sequences, generalizing a result by Schur. Lastly, we give an upper bound on minimal asymptotics of height over sequences of algebraic numbers.

Abstract:In the paper "Uniformity of Mordell-Lang" by Vesselin Dimitrov, Philipp Habegger and Ziyang Gao (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2001.10276" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2001.10276">arXiv:2001.10276</a>), they use Silverman-Tate's Height Inequality and they give a proof of the same which makes use of Cartier divisors and hence drops the flatness assumption of structure morphisms of compactified abelian schemes. However, their proof makes use of Hironaka's theorem on resolution of singularities which is unknown for fields of positive characteristic. We try to slightly modify their ideas, use blow-ups in place of Hironaka's theorem to make the proof effective for any fields with product formula where heights can be defined and any normal quasi-projective variety as a base. We work in the more general set up of dynamical systems. As an application we prove certain variant of Silverman's Specialization Theorem with restricted hypotheses in higher dimensional bases.

Abstract:Let A be an abelian surface over F_q, the field of q elements. The rational points on A/\F_q form an abelian group A(\F_q) \simeq \Z/n_1\Z \times \Z/n_1 n_2 \Z \times \Z/n_1 n_2 n_3\Z \times\Z/n_1 n_2 n_3 n_4\Z. We are interested in knowing which groups of this shape actually arise as the group of points on some abelian surface over some finite field. For a fixed prime power q, a characterization of the abelian groups that occur was recently found by Rybakov. One can use this characterization to obtain a set of congruences modulo the integers $n_1, n_2, n_3, n_4$ on certain combinations of coefficients of the corresponding Weil polynomials. We use Rybakov's criterion to show that groups \Z/n_1\Z \times \Z/n_1 n_2 \Z \times \Z/n_1 n_2 n_3\Z \times\Z/n_1 n_2 n_3 n_4\Z do not occur if n_1 is very large with respect to n_2, n_2, n_4 (Theorem \ref{splitbound}), and occur with density zero in a wider range of the variables (Theorem \ref{splitbound-average}).

Lower bounds on Loewy lengths of modules of finite projective dimension

Abstract:This article is concerned with nonzero modules of finite length and finite projective dimension over a local ring. We show the Loewy length of such a module is larger than the regularity of the ring whenever the ring is strict Cohen-Macaulay, establishing a conjecture of Corso--Huneke--Polini--Ulrich for such rings. In fact, we show the stronger result that the Loewy length of a nonzero module of finite flat dimension is at least the regularity for strict Cohen-Macaulay rings, which significantly strengthens a theorem of Avramov--Buchweitz--Iyengar--Miller. As an application we simultaneously verify a Lech-like conjecture, comparing generalized Loewy length along flat local extensions, and a conjecture of Hanes for strict Cohen-Macaulay rings. Finally, we also give notable improvements to known lower bounds for Loewy lengths without the strict Cohen-Macaulay assumption. The strongest general bounds we achieve are over complete intersection rings.

Finite Fields and Their Applications

Abstract:We provide a theoretical study of Algebraic Geometry codes constructed from abelian surfaces defined over finite fields. We give a general bound on their minimum distance and we investigate how this estimation can be sharpened under the assumption that the abelian surface does not contain low genus curves. This approach naturally leads us to consider Weil restrictions of elliptic curves and abelian surfaces which do not admit a principal polarization.

Abstract:Radziwill and Soundararajan unveiled a connection between low-lying zeros and central values of $L$-functions, which they instantiated in the case of quadratic twists of an elliptic curve. This paper addresses the case of the family of modular forms in the level aspect, and proves that the logarithms of central values of associated L-functions approximately distribute along a normal law with mean -(1/2)log log c(f) and variance log log c(f), where c(f) is the analytic conductor of f, as predicted by the Keating-Snaith conjecture.

Diophantine avoidance and small-height primitive elements in ideals of number fields

Abstract:Let $K$ be a number field of degree $d$. Then every ideal $I$ in the ring of integers ${\mathcal O}_K$ contains infinitely many primitive elements, i.e. elements of degree $d$. A bound on smallest height of such an element in $I$ follows from some recent developments in the direction of a 1998 conjecture of W. Ruppert. We prove a very explicit bound like this in the case of quadratic fields. Further, we consider primitive elements in an ideal outside of a finite union of other ideals and prove a bound on the height of a smallest such element. Our main tool is a result on points of small norm in a lattice outside of an algebraic hypersurface and a finite union of sublattices of finite index, which we prove by blending two previous Diophantine avoidance results. We also obtain an avoidance result like this for lattice points in the positive orthant in $\mathbb{R}^d$ and use it to obtain a small-height totally positive primitive element in an ideal of a totally real number field outside of a finite union of other ideals. Additionally, we use our avoidance method to prove a bound on the Mahler measure of a generating non-sparse polynomial for a given number field. Finally, we produce a bound on the height of a smallest primitive generator for a principal ideal in a quadratic number field.

An analogue of a conjecture of Rasmussen and Tamagawa for abelian varieties over function fields

Abstract:Let $L$ be a number field and let $\ell$ be a prime number. Rasmussen and Tamagawa conjectured, in a precise sense, that abelian varieties whose field of definition of the $\ell$-power torsion is both a pro-$\ell$ extension of $L(\mu_\ell)$ and unramified away from $\ell$ are quite rare. In this paper, we formulate an analogue of the Rasmussen--Tamagawa conjecture for non-isotrivial abelian varieties defined over function fields. We provide a proof of our analogue in the case of elliptic curves. In higher dimensions, when the base field is a subfield of the complex numbers, we show that our conjecture is a consequence of the uniform geometric torsion conjecture. Finally, using a theorem of Bakker and Tsimerman we also prove our conjecture unconditionally for abelian varieties with real multiplication.

In addition to the small-height property, the basis vectors we obtain satisfy certain sparsity condition. Abstract:In the classical Geometry of Numbers, the calculation of successive minima may be quite difficult, even in R2 using the norm coming from a distance function associated to a set. In the literature, there seem to be hardly any analogues when R is replaced by the algebraic closure of a function field in one variable and one uses a norm arising from the absolute height. Here, we calculate a one‐parameter family of examples that naturally arose in our recent paper on bounded heights. We also comment on whether the minima are attained.

The Shafarevich conjecture for hypersurfaces in abelian varieties

Abstract:Faltings proved that there are finitely many abelian varieties of genus $g$ over a number field $K$, with good reduction outside a finite set of primes $S$. Fixing one of these abelian varieties $A$, we prove that there are finitely many smooth hypersurfaces in $A$, with good reduction outside $S$, representing a given ample class in the Néron-Severi group of $A$, up to translation, as long as the dimension of $A$ is at least $4$. Our approach builds on the approach of arXiv:1807.02721 which studies $p$-adic variations of Hodge structure to turn finiteness results for $p$-adic Galois representations into geometric finiteness statements. A key new ingredient is an approach to proving big monodromy for the variations of Hodge structure arising from the middle cohomology of these hypersurfaces using the Tannakian theory of sheaf convolution on abelian varieties.
