What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The paper aims to develop a high-performance evaporator inspired by how reeds in nature efficiently transport and evaporate water. By chemically delignifying natural reeds, researchers created a material with a hierarchical porous structure that effectively separates fluid transport paths from evaporation paths. Specifically, the delignified reeds have larger micro-scale channel diameters and more nano-scale pores, which facilitate rapid fluid transport. Meanwhile, the interconnected pores in the macroscopic channels promote lateral fluid transport to these macroscopic channels, and the high surface area of the macroscopic channels enhances evaporation efficiency. As a result, the delignified reeds exhibit significantly improved fluid transport speed (14.7 mm/s) and evaporation rate (46.9 kg/m²·h), which are 160 times and 7 times faster than natural reeds, respectively. Furthermore, the study indicates that this high-performance evaporator has potential applications in regulating indoor humidity and temperature, producing clean water, and harvesting evaporation-driven energy. In summary, the paper proposes a novel design principle of achieving efficient evaporation performance by separating fluid transport paths from evaporation paths, which can be extended to other material systems.
