Abstract:The pairing symmetry is one of the major issues in the study of iron-based superconductors. We adopt a low-energy effective kinetic model based on the first-principles band structure calculations combined with the J_1-J_2 model for KFe_2As_2, the phase diagram of pairing symmetries is constructed. Putting the values of J_1 and J_2 of the J_1-J_2 model obtained by the first-principles calculations into this phase diagram, we find that the pairing symmetry for KFe_2As_2 is a nodal d_xy-wave in the folded Brillouin zone with two iron atoms per unit cell. This is in good agreement with experiments observed a nodal order parameter.

Abstract:The pairing mechanism in iron-based superconductors is the subject of ongoing debate. Proximity to an antiferromagnetic phase suggests that pairing is mediated by spin fluctuations, but orbital fluctuations have also been invoked. The former typically favour a pairing state of extended s-wave symmetry with a gap that changes sign between electron and hole Fermi surfaces (s+-), while the latter yield a standard s-wave state without sign change (s++). Here we show that applying pressure to KFe2As2 induces a change of pairing state. The critical temperature Tc decreases with pressure initially, and then suddenly increases, above a critical pressure Pc. The constancy of the Hall coefficient through Pc rules out a change in the Fermi surface. There is compelling evidence that the pairing state below Pc is d-wave, from bulk measurements at ambient pressure. Above Pc, the high sensitivity to disorder argues for a particular kind of s+- state. The change from d-wave to s-wave is likely to proceed via an unusual s + id state that breaks time-reversal symmetry. The proximity of two distinct pairing states found here experimentally is natural given the near degeneracy of d-wave and s+- states found theoretically. These findings make a compelling case for spin-fluctuation-mediated superconductivity in this key iron-arsenide material.

Abstract:The nature of the pairing state in iron-based superconductors is the subject of much debate. Here we argue that in one material, the stoichiometric iron pnictide KFe2As2, there is overwhelming evidence for a d-wave pairing state, characterized by symmetry-imposed vertical line nodes in the superconducting gap. This evidence is reviewed, with a focus on thermal conductivity and the strong impact of impurity scattering on the critical temperature T-c. We then compare KFe2As2 to Ba0.6K0.4Fe2As2, obtained by Ba substitution, where the pairing symmetry is s-wave and the T-c is ten times higher. The transition from d-wave to s-wave within the same crystal structure provides a rare opportunity to investigate the connection between band structure and the pairing mechanism. We also compare KFe2As2 with the nodal iron-based superconductor LaFePO, for which the pairing symmetry is probably not d-wave, but more likely s-wave with accidental line nodes.

Abstract:The origin of high-temperature superconductivity in iron-based superconductors is still not understood; determination of the pairing symmetry is essential for understanding the superconductivity mechanism. In the iron-based superconductors that have hole pockets around the Brillouin zone centre and electron pockets around the zone corners, the pairing symmetry is generally considered to be s ± , which indicates a sign change in the superconducting gap between the hole and electron pockets. For the iron-based superconductors with only hole pockets, however, a couple of pairing scenarios have been proposed, but the exact symmetry is still controversial. Here we determine that the pairing symmetry in KFe 2 As 2 —which is a prototypical iron-based superconductor with hole pockets both around the zone centre and around the zone corners—is also of the s ± type. Our laser-based angle-resolved photoemission measurements have determined the superconducting gap distribution and identified the locations of the gap nodes on all the Fermi surfaces around the zone centres and the zone corners. These results unify the pairing symmetry in hole-doped iron-based superconductors and point to spin fluctuation as the pairing glue in generating superconductivity.

Abstract:Resolving the microscopic pairing mechanism and its experimental identification in unconventional superconductors is among the most vexing problems of contemporary condensed matter physics. We show that Raman spectroscopy provides an avenue towards this aim by probing the structure of the pairing interaction at play in an unconventional superconductor. As we study the spectra of the prototypical Fe-based superconductor Ba 1−x K x Fe 2 As 2 for 0.22 ≤ x ≤ 0.70 in all symmetry channels, Raman spectroscopy allows us to distill the leading s -wave state. In addition, the spectra collected in the B 1 g symmetry channel reveal the existence of two collective modes which are indicative of the presence of two competing, yet sub-dominant, pairing tendencies of d_x^2 - y^2 symmetry type. A comprehensive functional Renormalization Group and random-phase approximation study on this compound confirms the presence of the two sub-leading channels, and consistently matches the experimental doping dependence of the related modes. The consistency between the experimental observations and the theoretical modeling suggests that spin fluctuations play a significant role in superconducting pairing.

Abstract:The discoveries of several Pnictogen and Chalcogen Iron compounds, with contiguous Antiferromagnetism, high temperature Superconductivity, and structural transitions in their phase diagram as a function of dopants, has been followed by intense activity, both theoretical and experimental. The level of activity does not rival the frenzy in the decade following the discovery of superconductivity in the cuprates, but is only an order of magnitude lower. The compounds have well separated layers of Fe and superconductivity appears below a region of anomalous non-Fermi-liquid transport properties characteristic of quantum-critical fluctuations. In this respect, the problem is less perplexing than the cuprates, where the non-Fermi-liquid properties above superconductivity have, at one boundary in the phase diagram, a much more subtle transition than the easily observed Antiferromagnetism in the ironics (a term used to describe such compounds which I heard Sri Raghu use at the KITP workshop on this problem last fall). But unlike in the Cuprates, there are multiple bands from the closely spaced Fe-orbitals near the Fermi-surface and not too far below and above it because Fe is near the middle of the 3d-transition metal series. The near orbital degeneracy introduces intra-atomic Hund's rule correlations together with inter-atomic interactions and appears much more complicated at the level of the minimal Hamiltonian. But is it so at the level of basic principles? One outlook has been that the interactions parameters, though numerous are not much larger than the kinetic energy parameters. So, why not address the problem by using the all-purpose calculations of the density functional type, (too numerous to refer to here but referred in the papers highlighted and below) which have rationalized through imaginative use the properties of so many magnetic metals and compounds. The difficulty in Cuprates, which led to rejection of such methods, that they predict the 1/2 filled state to be a metal are absent in the Ironics. Abstract:The discovery of high-temperature superconductivity in iron pnictides raised the possibility of an unconventional superconducting mechanism in multiband materials. The observation of Fermi-surface (FS)-dependent nodeless superconducting gaps suggested that inter-FS interactions may play a crucial role in superconducting pairing. In the optimally hole-doped Ba 0.6 K 0.4 Fe 2 As 2 , the pairing strength is enhanced simultaneously (2Δ/T c ≈7) on the nearly nested FS pockets, i.e., the inner hole-like (α) FS and the 2 hybridized electron-like FSs, whereas the pairing remains weak (2Δ/T c ≈3.6) in the poorly nested outer hole-like (β) FS. Here, we report that in the electron-doped BaFe 1.85 Co 0.15 As 2 , the FS nesting condition switches from the α to the β FS due to the opposite size changes for hole- and electron-like FSs upon electron doping. The strong pairing strength (2Δ/T c ≈6) is also found to switch to the nested β FS, indicating an intimate connection between FS nesting and superconducting pairing, and strongly supporting the inter-FS pairing mechanism in the iron-based superconductors.
Pairing symmetries of several families of iron-based superconductors and some similarities with cuprates and heavy-fermions

Abstract:We show that, by using unit-cell transformation between 1 Fe per unit cell to 2 Fe per unit cell, one can qualitatively understand the pairing symmetry of several families of iron-based superconductors. In iron-pnictides and iron-chalcogenides, the nodeless s+- pairing and the resulting magnetic resonance mode transform nicely between the two unit cells, while retaining all physical properties unchanged. However, when the electron-pocket disappears from the Fermi surface with complete doping in KFe2As2, we find that the unit-cell invariant requirement prohibits the occurrence of s+- pairing symmetry (caused by inter-hole-pocket nesting). However, the intra-pocket nesting is compatible here, which leads to a nodal d-wave pairing. The corresponding Fermi surface topology and the pairing symmetry are similar to Ce-based heavy-fermion superconductors. Furthermore, when the Fermi surface hosts only electron-pockets in KyFe2-xSe2, the inter-electron-pocket nesting induces a nodeless and isotropic d-wave pairing. This situation is analogous to the electron-doped cuprates, where the strong antiferromagnetic order creates similar disconnected electron-pocket Fermi surface, and hence nodeless d-wave pairing appears. The unit-cell transformation in KyFe2-xSe2 exhibits that the d-wave pairing breaks the translational symmetry of the 2 Fe unit cell, and thus cannot be realized unless a vacancy ordering forms to compensate for it. These results are consistent with the coexistence picture of a competing order and nodeless d-wave superconductivity in both cuprates and KyFe1.6Se2.

Studies of Scanning Tunneling Spectroscopy on Iron-Based Superconductors

Abstract:Since the discovery of iron-based superconductors in 2008, it has been a hot topic to research the pairing mechanism of superconductivity. Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) can be used to detect the electronic information in nano-scale, hence, it is an important tool to do research on superconductivity. In recent 10 years, many valuable works have been carried out by STM in iron-based superconductors. In this paper, we try to make a brief introduction of the STM works in iron-based superconductors. Since the iron-based superconductors have multiple bands and superconducting gaps, the Fermi surface topology can change significantly among different materials. There are some evidences to prove a nodeless s -wave pairing in the optimally-doped iron-based superconductors with both electron and hole pockets by STM experiments. Furthermore, it has been demonstrated that FeSe-based materials with only electron pockets also have a sign-change order parameter, which provides a robust evidence for the unified picture of the electron pairing in iron-based superconductors. Besides, STM experiments provide fruitful information about the novel electronic properties including the electronic nematicity, shallow band effect, and possible topological superconductivity. Finally, we also give perspectives about the STM studies in iron based superconductors.
Functional Renormalization Group Study of Pairing Symmetry and Pairing Mechanism in Iron-Selenide Superconductors

Abstract:In iron-selenide superconductors, only electronlike Fermi pockets survive, challenging the S-+/- pairing based on the quasinesting between the electron and hole Fermi pockets (as in iron arsenides). We performed a functional renormalization group study and showed that an in-phase S-wave pairing on the electron pockets (S-ee(++)) is realized. The pairing mechanism involves two competing driving forces: The strong C-type spin fluctuations cause attractive pair scattering between and within electron pockets via Cooperon excitations on the virtual hole pockets, while the G-type spin fluctuations cause repulsive pair scattering. The latter effect is, however, weakened by the hybridization splitting of the electron pockets. The resulting S-ee(++)-wave pairing symmetry is consistent with experiments. We further propose that the quasiparticle interference pattern in scanning tunneling microscopy and the Andreev reflection in out-of-plane contact tunneling are efficient probes of in-phase versus antiphase S-wave pairing on the electron pockets.
Unified picture for the order parameter and mechanism of iron based superconductors

Abstract:Iron-based superconductors are the only family of high-temperature unconven-tional superconductors besides cuprates, and their pairing symmetry has attracted considerable attention since their discovery. The widely accepted pairing model is S±, which requires both hole and electron pockets. However, this picture was questioned after the discovery of the intercalated or monolayer form of FeSe-based systems which have no hole pockets. We have conducted a series of experiments to study the characteristics of the gap structure or order parameter in various iron-based superconductors with different Fermi surface topologies. In two typical FeAs-based superconductors, namely NaFe1-xCoxAs and Ba1-xKxFe2As2, by measuring the scanning tunneling spectra or detecting non-magnetic impurity induced bound states, we found clear evidence supporting the S ± pairing. Concerning the systems without hole pockets, we took the (Li1?xFex) OHFeSe system as a platform and conducted extensive investigations. Two anisotropic super-conducting gaps were observed in (Li1 ? xFex)OHFeSe by our scanning tunneling microscopy measurements. Detailed experimental data based on the Fourier transformed quasiparticle interfer-ence (FT-QPI) allowed us for the first time to assign two superconducting gaps to the outer and inner electron Fermi pockets after folding or hybridization. In addition, a sign reversal of the superconducting order parameter in (Li1?xFex)OHFe1-yZnySe is evidenced according to the further data and analysis based on the in-gap bound state from a non-magnetic impurity as well as the phase-sensitive analysis of FT-QPI data. These results provide a unified picture for the gap structure and pairing mechanism of iron-based superconductors with or without Fermi hole pockets and support the conclusion that repulsive interaction plays the key role in electron pairing.
Spin fluctuations, interband coupling and unconventional pairing in iron-based superconductors

Abstract:Based on an effective two-band model and using the fluctuation-exchange (FLEX) approach, we explore spin fluctuations and unconventional superconducting pairing in Fe-based layer superconductors. It is elaborated that one type of interband antiferromagnetic (AF) spin fluctuation stems from the interband Coulomb repulsion, whereas the other type of intraband AF spin fluctuation originates from the intraband Coulomb repulsion. Due to the Fermi-surface topology, a spin-singlet extended s-wave superconducting state is more favorable than the nodal d(XY)-wave state if the interband AF spin fluctuation is more significant than the intraband one, otherwise vice versa. It is also revealed that the effective interband coupling plays an important role in the intraband pairings, which is a distinct feature of the present two-band system.
Integer and half-integer flux-quantum transitions in a niobium/iron-pnictide loop

Abstract:The recent discovery of iron-based superconductors challenges the existing paradigm of high-temperature superconductivity. Owing to their unusual multi-orbital band structure, magnetism, and electron correlation, theories propose a unique sign reversed s-wave pairing state, with the order parameter changing sign between the electron and hole Fermi pockets. However, because of the complex Fermi surface topology and material related issues, the predicted sign reversal remains unconfirmed. Here we report a novel phase-sensitive technique for probing unconventional pairing symmetry in the polycrystalline iron-pnictides. Through the observation of both integer and half-integer flux-quantum transitions in composite niobium/iron-pnictide loops, we provide the first phase-sensitive evidence of the sign change of the order parameter in NdFeAsO0.88F0.12, lending strong support for microscopic models predicting unconventional s-wave pairing symmetry. These findings have important implications on the mechanism of pnictide superconductivity, and lay the groundwork for future studies of new physics arising from the exotic order in the FeAs-based superconductors.

Abstract:Pairing symmetry is important to indentify the pairing mechanism. The analysis becomes particularly timely and important for the newly discovered iron-based multi-orbital superconductors. From the group theory point of view we classified all pairing matrices (in the orbital space) that carry irreducible representations of the system. The quasiparticle gap falls into three categories: full, nodal and gapless. The nodal-gap states show conventional Volovik effect even for on-site pairing. The gapless states are odd in the orbital space, have a negative superfluid density and are therefore unstable. The smooth evolution of the resistivity and Hall coefficient through P-c rules out a change in the Fermi surface. We infer that there must be a change of pairing symmetry at P-c. Below P-c, there is compelling evidence for a d-wave state(10-14). Above P-c, the high sensitivity to disorder rules out an (s++) state. Given the near degeneracy of d-wave and s(+/-) states found theoretically(15-19), we propose an s(+/-) state above P-c. A change from d-wave to s-wave would probably proceed through an intermediate s + id state that breaks time-reversal symmetry(20-22).

Abstract:The surprising discovery of superconductivity in layered iron-based materials, with transition temperatures climbing as high as 55 K, has lead to thousands of publications on this subject over the past two years. While there is general consensus on the unconventional nature of the Cooper pairing state of these systems, several central questions remain - including the role of magnetism, the nature of chemical and structural tuning, and the resultant pairing symmetry - and the search for universal properties and principles continues. Here we review the progress of research on iron-based superconducting materials, highlighting the major experimental benchmarks that have been so far reached and the important questions that remain to be conclusively answered.

Quantum Monte Carlo Study of Pairing Symmetry and Correlation in Iron-based Superconductors

Abstract:We perform a systematic quantum Monte Carlo study of the pairing correlation in the S_4 symmetric microscopic model for iron-based superconductors. It is found that the pairing with an extensive s-wave symmetry robustly dominates over other pairings at low temperature in reasonable parameter region. The pairing susceptibility, the effective pairing interaction and the (π,0)antiferromagnetic correlation strongly increase as the on-site Coulomb interaction increases, indicating the importance of the effect of electron-electron correlation. Our non-biased numerical results provide a unified understanding of superconducting mechanism in iron-pnictides and iron-chalcogenides and demonstrate that the superconductivity is driven by strong electron-electron correlation effects.

Abstract:Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) has made tremendous progress in the study and understanding of both classical and unconventional superconductors. This has motivated a rapidly growing effort to apply the same techniques to the iron-based high-Tc superconductors since their discovery in 2008. Five years have brought exciting advances in imaging and spectroscopic investigation of this new class of materials. In this review, we focus on several recent STM contributions to the identification of the gap symmetry and pairing glue. We highlight the unique capabilities and challenges still ahead for STM studies of iron-based superconductors.
