Abstract:Acute diarrhea is a prevalent disease worldwide, affecting both developed and underdeveloped nations. Defined as diarrhea lasting <4 weeks, acute diarrhea is a gastrointestinal response to several etiologies, such as infection, drug adverse reactions, inflammatory bowel disease, and ischemia, with infections accounting for the majority of cases. [ 1 ] Especially susceptible to increased morbidity and mortality from acute diarrhea-induced dehydration are the pediatric and geriatric populations in low/middle-income countries (LMIC). In 2013, acute diarrheal illness ranked seventh among causes of mortality in LMIC in the global disease burden series with an estimated 1.3 million deaths, [ 2 ] and in 2019, diarrhea was responsible for approximately 9% of deaths of all children under 5 years of age. [ 3 ] Despite the higher incidence of diarrheal episodes in the pediatric population, older individuals remain the most at risk for hospitalization and mortality from acute diarrheal episodes. [ 4 ]
