To date, LIPUS therapy has been demonstrated to have many biological effects in the field of therapeutic ultrasound in physical therapy. In the present study, LIPUS was developed for the treatment of erectile dysfunction (ED) in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats. METHODS A total 50 male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly grouped into two cohorts, normal control (NC) and STZ-induced diabetes (DM), which is sub-grouped into DM, DM+LIPUS 50, DM+LIPUS 100, and DM+LIPUS 200. Animals in LIPUS groups were treated at different energy levels for 3 minutes and 3 times per week for 2 weeks. After 2-weeks wash-out, the intracavernous pressure (ICP) response to cavernous nerve electrostimulation, histological examination of midpenile, and Western Blot (WB) was conducted to assess the erectile function, smooth muscle contents, collagen I/collagen III ratio, elastic fibers quantity, eNOS/nNOS expression, and TGF-¦Â1/Smad/CTGF signaling pathway. RESULTS LIPUS therapy significantly improved the erectile function in diabetic rats, enhanced corpus cavernosum smooth muscle contents, collagen I/collagen III ratio, elastic fibers quantity, and eNOS and nNOS expression. Interestingly, it also down-regulated TGF-¦Â1/Smad/CTGF signaling pathway in penile tissue of STZ-induced diabetic rats. CONCLUSIONS LIPUS therapy successfully restored erectile function and improved pathological changes in penile tissue of STZ-induced diabetic rats, which could be a potential novel non-invasive therapy for diabetic ED in clinic. © 2015 by American Urological Association Education and Research, Inc.FiguresReferencesRelatedDetails Volume 193Issue 4SApril 2015Page: e768 Advertisement Copyright & Permissions© 2015 by American Urological Association Education and Research, Inc.Metrics Author Information Hongen Lei More articles by this author Yongde Xu More articles by this author Ruili Guan More articles by this author Zhezhu Gao More articles by this author Zhongcheng Xin More articles by this author Expand All Advertisement Advertisement PDF downloadLoading ...
