Abstract:In non-Hermitian systems with the Hamiltonians obeying parity-time (PT) symmetry, exploring the counterintuitive physics induced by degeneracies known as exceptional points (EPs) provides unprecedented ways to control energy flow.Recently, there are growing interests in bridging wave systems and diffusive systems, where anti-parity-time (APT) symmetry is demonstrated in diffusive systems.In this work, we start from the thermal energy transfer in a four-channel coupling model with the background flow velocities in adjacent channels opposite.A third order EP exists in this system, where temperature profiles in the moving channels are static in the APT symmetric phase (flow velocities below a threshold v EP at the EP), and the profiles begin to dynamically evolve in the APT broken phase (> v EP ).By introducing a velocity perturbation into the background flow at the third order EP (v EP ± ∆v), we find APT symmetry keeps robust with the phases of temperature profiles in adjacent channels relatively static or locked.When ∆v is increased above a threshold (another EP), the APT symmetry is breaking with a transition from phase locking to phase oscillation, regardless of initial conditions.This work unveils rich physics in convectively coupled diffusive systems and offers us new prospects for the control of complex thermal fields.

Abstract:Exceptional points (EPs) have revealed a lot of fundamental physics and promise many important applications. The effect of system nonlinearity on the property of EPs is yet to be well studied. Here, we propose an optical system with nonlinear dissipation to achieve a nonreciprocal EP. Our system consists of a linear whispering-gallery-mode microresonator (WGMR) coupling to a WGMR with nonlinear dissipation. In our system, the condition of EP appearance is dependent on the field intensity in the nonlinear WGMR. Due to the chirality of intracavity field intensity, the EPs and the transmission of the system can be nonreciprocal. Our work may pave the way to exploit nonreciprocal EP for optical information processing.

Abstract:The exotic physics associated with exceptional points (EPs) is always under the scrutiny of theoretical and experimental science. Recently, considerable effort has been invested in the combination of nonlinearity and non-Hermiticity. The concept of nonlinear EPs (NEPs) has been introduced, which can avoid the loss of completeness of the eigenbasis in dynamics while retaining the key features of linear EPs. Here, we present the first direct experimental demonstration of a NEP based on two non-Hermition coupled circuit resonators combined with a nonlinear saturable gain. At the NEP, the response of the eigenfrequency to perturbations demonstrates a third-order root law and the eigenbasis of the Hamiltonian governing the system dynamics is still complete. Non-Markovian Quantum Exceptional Points

Abstract:Exceptional points (EPs) are singularities in the spectra of non-Hermitian operators, where eigenvalues and eigenvectors coalesce. Recently, open quantum systems have been increasingly explored as EP testbeds due to their natural non-Hermitian nature. However, existing works mostly focus on the Markovian limit, leaving a gap in understanding EPs in the non-Markovian regime. In this work, we address this gap by proposing a theoretical framework based on two numerically exact descriptions of non-Markovian dynamics: the pseudomode mapping and the hierarchical equations of motion. The proposed framework enables conventional spectral analysis for EP identification, establishing direct links between EPs and dynamic manifestations in open systems, such as non-exponential decays and enhanced sensitivity to external perturbations. We unveil pure non-Markovian EPs that are unobservable in the Markovian limit. Remarkably, the EP aligns with the Markovian-to-non-Markovian transition, and the EP condition is adjustable by modifying environmental spectral properties. Moreover, we show that structured environments can elevate EP order, thereby enhancing the system's sensitivity. These findings lay a theoretical foundation and open new avenues for non-Markovian reservoir engineering and non-Hermitian physics.

Abstract:Abstract Exceptional points (EPs) as branch singularities describe peculiar degeneracies of non-Hermitian systems, widely studied in topological and non-topological optical architectures with introducing gain or loss technically. This work focuses on the EPs in a topological waveguide (TW)-cavity coupled structure, where there is no need to introduce practical gain or loss. The topological cavity contains two degenerate counter-propagation topological whispering gallery modes, whose coupling with the TW leads to the effective gain and loss, responsible for the EP. Such a photonic architecture is designed practically by crystal-symmetry-protected topological photonic insulators based on air rods in conventional dielectric materials. The relevant EP reveals the breaking of the parity-time symmetry, reflected by the change of the transmission-dip number in the optical transmission spectra of the system. Achieving EPs in topological photonic systems possibly opens a new avenue toward robust optical devices with exceptional-point-based unique properties and functionalities.

Abstract:Exceptional points (EPs), at which more than one eigenvalue and eigenvector coalesce, are unique spectral features of non-Hermiticity (NH) systems. They exist widely in open systems with complex energy spectra. We experimentally demonstrate the appearance of paired EPs in a periodical-driven degenerate optical cavity along the synthetic orbital angular momentum dimension with a tunable parameter. The complex-energy band structures and the key features of EPs, i.e., their bulk Fermi arcs, parity-time symmetry breaking transition, energy swapping, and half-integer band windings, are directly observed by detecting the wavefront angle-resolved transmission spectrum. Our results demonstrate the flexibility of using the photonic synthetic dimensions to implement NH systems beyond their geometric dimension and EP-based sensing.
Tweaking Spectral Topology and Exceptional Points by Nonlinearity in Non-Hermitian Polariton Systems

Abstract:Exceptional points (EPs) with their intriguing spectral topology have attracted considerable attention in a broad range of physical systems, with potential sensing applications driving much of the present research in this field. Here we theoretically demonstrate the realization of EPs in a system with significant nonlinearity, a non-equilibrium exciton-polariton condensate. With the possibility to control loss and gain and nonlinearity by optical means, this system allows for a comprehensive analysis of the interplay of nonlinearities (Kerr-type and saturable gain) and non-Hermiticity. Not only do we find that EPs can be intentionally shifted in parameter space by the saturable gain, we also observe intriguing rotations and intersections of Riemann surfaces, and find nonlinearity-enhanced sensing capabilities. Our results are quite general in nature and illustrate the potential of tailoring spectral topology and related phenomena in non-Hermitian systems by nonlinearity.

Merging of Exceptional Points in Classical Waves

Abstract:Non-Hermitian systems, such as open systems and systems with asymmetric losses, are ubiquitous in nature and have drawn a lot of attentions for a long time. The exceptional points (EPs) that can exist in such systems when two eigenstates coalesce are the origin of a wide range of novel phenomena in different branches of physics. Most of these phenomena can be understood by considering a 2 × 2 non-Hermitian matrix. At a higher dimension, more complex EP physics not found in two-state systems arises. Here, we investigate the multi-state non-Hermitian system in both acoustics and photonic crystals. For acoustics systems, we consider the emergence and interaction of multiple EPs in a four-state system theoretically and the system is realized experimentally using four coupled acoustic cavities with asymmetric losses. We found that multiple EPs can emerge and as the system parameters vary, these EPs can collide and merge, leading to higher order singularities and topological characteristics much richer in physics than those seen in two-state systems [1]. For photonic crystals, we study the complex band structures of one-dimensional PT symmetric photonic crystals by setting up a model Hamiltonian, and two types of PT phase diagram are found. Furthermore, by calculating non-Abelian Zak phases, we showed that the standard concept of band inversion in a Hermitian photonic crystal can be extended to non-Hermitian case before the PT-exact phase is broken [2].

Abstract:Exceptional points (EPs) arising in non-Hermitian systems have led to a variety of intriguing wave phenomena, and have been attracting increased interest in various physical platforms. In this Review, we highlight the latest fundamental advances in the context of EPs in various nanoscale systems, and overview the theoretical progress related to EPs, including higher-order EPs, bulk Fermi arcs and Weyl exceptional rings. We peek into EP-associated emerging technologies, in particular focusing on the influence of noise for sensing near EPs, improving the efficiency in asymmetric transmission based on EPs, optical isolators in nonlinear EP systems and novel concepts to implement EPs in topological photonics. We also discuss the constraints and limitations of the applications relying on EPs, and offer parting thoughts about promising ways to tackle them for advanced nanophotonic applications.

General Theory of Spontaneous Emission Near Exceptional Points

Abstract:We present a general theory of spontaneous emission at exceptional points (EPs)---exotic degeneracies in non-Hermitian systems. Our theory extends beyond spontaneous emission to any light--matter interaction described by the local density of states (e.g., absorption, thermal emission, and nonlinear frequency conversion). Whereas traditional spontaneous-emission theories imply infinite enhancement factors at EPs, we derive finite bounds on the enhancement, proving maximum enhancement of 4 in passive systems with second-order EPs and significantly larger enhancements (exceeding $400\times$) in gain-aided and higher-order EP systems. In contrast to non-degenerate resonances, EPs are associated with non-Lorentzian emission curves, leading to enhancements that scale polynomially with the resonance quality factor.

Optomechanically Induced Transparency on Exceptional Surfaces

Abstract:Exceptional points (EPs) are singularities in non-Hermitian systems, where the system transmission spectrum varies significantly at the phase transition point. Here, we propose a practical scheme to study the changes of the optomechanically induced transparency (OMIT) spectrum on the exceptional surface (ES), which is formed by designing the structure of the waveguide in a non-Hermitian cavity optomechanical system. By comparing the transmission spectra of the system at different normal points, EPs on the same or different ESs, and exceptional derived points, we find that the peak-valley conversion of the system transmission spectra is obtained at the phase transition point and the arbitrary manipulation of the system transmission spectrum can be realized by moving the system on the same or different ESs. Furthermore, the phenomena of conversion and enhancement of the fast-slow light in the system transmission spectra have also been discovered in our researches. Different from the isolated EP, our proposal can discuss the system properties at different EPs, can find a richer transmission spectrum, and can provide more convenient options for experimental implementation, which paves the way for studying the nature of non-Hermitian systems in a higher dimension.

Dynamic manifestation of exception points in a non-Hermitian continuous model with an imaginary periodic potential

Abstract:Exceptional points (EPs) are distinct characteristics of non-Hermitian Hamiltonians that have no counterparts in Hermitian systems. In this study, we focus on EPs in continuous systems rather than discrete non-Hermitian systems, which are commonly investigated in both the experimental and theoretical studies. The non-Hermiticity of the system stems from the local imaginary potential, which can be effectively achieved through particle loss in recent quantum simulation setups. Leveraging the discrete Fourier transform, the dynamics of EPs within the low-energy sector can be well modeled by a Stark ladder system under the influence of a non-Hermitian tilted potential. To illustrate this, we systematically investigate continuous systems with finite imaginary potential wells and demonstrate the distinctive EP dynamics across different orders. Our investigation sheds light on EP behaviors, potentially catalyzing further exploration of EP phenomena across a variety of quantum simulation setups.

Experimental Observation of an Exceptional Surface in Synthetic Dimensions with Magnon Polaritons.

Abstract:Exceptional points (EPs) are singularities of energy levels in generalized eigenvalue systems. In this Letter, we demonstrate the surface of EPs on a magnon polariton platform composed of coupled magnons and microwave photons. Our experiments show that EPs form a three-dimensional exceptional surface (ES) when the system is tuned in a four-dimensional synthetic space. We demonstrate that there exists an exceptional saddle point (ESP) in the ES which originates from the unique couplings between magnons and microwave photons. Such an ESP exhibits unique anisotropic behaviors in both the real and imaginary parts of the eigenfrequencies. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first experimental observation of ES, opening up new opportunities for high-dimensional control of non-Hermitian systems.

Abstract:Exceptional points (EPs) associated with a square-root singularity have been found in many non-Hermitian systems. In most of the studies, the EPs found are isotropic, meaning that the same singular behavior is obtained independent of the direction from which they are approached in the parameter space. In this Letter, we demonstrate both theoretically and experimentally the existence of an anisotropic EP in an acoustic system that shows different singular behaviors when the anisotropic EP is approached from different directions in the parameter space. Such an anisotropic EP arises from the coalescence of two square-root EPs having the same chirality.
Exceptional features in nonlinear Hermitian systems

Abstract:Non-Hermitian systems and their topological singularities, such as exceptional points (EPs), lines, and surfaces, have recently attracted intense interest. The investigation of these exceptional constituents has led to fruitful applications. The responsivity of the eigenvalue diverges at EPs, and chiral state transfer occurs when encircling an EP. Traditionally, it was believed that these exceptional features were unique to non-Hermitian systems requiring gain, loss, or nonreciprocal hopping. Here, we show that these exceptional features are also present in nonlinear Hermitian systems. We consider two coupled resonators with Kerr nonlinearity in one resonator, and no non-Hermitian terms. We identify EP-like points (ELPs) on the eigenspectra where the critical behaviors are the same as those of typical EPs. Additionally, this nonlinear Hermitian system can be mapped to linear non-Hermitian systems, with ELPs corresponding to EPs. We also demonstrate that encirclement around an ELP in the parameter space leads to unique chiral state transfer behavior.

Abstract:Non-Hermitian systems distinguish themselves from Hermitian systems by exhibiting a phase transition point called an exceptional point (EP), which is the point at which two eigenstates coalesce under a system parameter variation. Many interesting EP phenomena such as level crossings/repulsions in nuclear/molecular and condensed matter physics, and unusual phenomena in optics such as loss-induced lasing and unidirectional transmission can be understood by considering a simple 2x2 non-Hermitian matrix. Abstract:Exceptional points in optics Many complex systems operate with loss. Mathematically, these systems can be described as non-Hermitian. A property of such a system is that there can exist certain conditions—exceptional points—where gain and loss can be perfectly balanced and exotic behavior is predicted to occur. Optical systems generally possess gain and loss and so are ideal systems for exploring exceptional point physics. Abstract:Exceptional points (EPs), singularities of non-Hermitian physics where complex spectral resonances degenerate, are one of the most exotic features of nonequilibrium open systems with unique properties. For instance, the emission rate of quantum emitters placed near resonators with EPs is enhanced (compared to the free-space emission rate) by a factor that scales quadratically with the resonance quality factor. Here, we verify the theory of spontaneous emission at EPs by measuring photoluminescence from photonic-crystal slabs that are embedded with a high-quantum-yield active material. While our experimental results verify the theoretically predicted enhancement, they also highlight the practical limitations on the enhancement due to material loss. Our designed structures can be used in applications that require enhanced and controlled emission, such as quantum sensing and imaging.

Abstract:Exceptional points in non-Hermitian systems have attracted considerable attention due to their novel applications in several fields such as optics, electronics, and mechanics. Typically, exceptional points are constructed through gain and loss modulation or dissipative coupling within the framework of parity-time symmetry or anti-parity-time symmetry. Recent demonstration of unidirectional coupling in optical resonators to create exceptional points has offered an alternative approach. This study extends this concept to electronic circuits, examining exceptional points that emerge in unidirectionally coupled LC circuits. We show that this circuit undergoes resonance frequency splitting that exhibits either linear or square-root scaling with the strength of the applied perturbation. We further explore the circuit's scattering properties when connected to an input-output channel and demonstrate both theoretically and experimentally the splitting of transmission dips or peaks when a perturbation is applied-highlighting the potential for building sensors with enhanced sensitivity. This work not only deepens the understanding of exceptional points in electronic circuits but also encourages the exploration and application of non-Hermiticity in electronics.
