Abstract:SIAM Journal on Applied Dynamical Systems, Volume 23, Issue 4, Page 2769-2792, December 2024. We construct periodic and quasiperiodic solutions for the nonlinear plate equation on the unit sphere in [math]. Periodic solutions for the nonlinear wave equation are constructed as well. The methods do not involve small parameters. In the case of a cubic nonlinear term, our approach is computer-assisted and thus yields detailed information about each solution. For nonlinearities that are in some sense close to linear, weak solutions are obtained by a variational method.

Abstract:In the last decades, wavelets have become a dominant tool for having applications in almost all the areas of engineering and science such as numerical simulation of partial differential equations (PDEs). The performance of the conventional numerical methods has been found to involve some difficulty to observe fast convergence in low computational time. To overcome this difficulty, we presented wavelet-based full approximation scheme (WFAS) for the numerical solution of some class of nonlinear PDEs using Daubechies wavelet intergrid operators. The numerical results obtained by this scheme are compared with the exact solution to reveal the accuracy and also speed up convergence in lesser computational time as compared with the existing schemes. Some test problems are presented to show the applicability and attractiveness of WFAS.

Abstract:An efficient numerical technique is developed for solving fractional order time hyperbolic partial differential equations by using the extended Legendre wavelet method. The fractional integral of extended Legendre wavelet in Riemann–Liouville sense is obtained by using Laplace transformation. The proposed scheme is established to compute an approximate solution and also to achieve a high degree of accuracy with a low computational cost. The solution obtained by the Extended Legendre wavelet method and standard Legendre wavelet method has been compared with their exact solution. Moreover, the convergence behavior and error analysis of the proposed method is studied through several examples.

Abstract:To solve fractional partial differential equations (FPDEs) under various physical conditions, this study developed a novel method known as the Hermite wavelet method employing the functional integration matrix. The method that has been suggested is based on the Hermite wavelet collocation process. To determine the solution of the fractional differential equations, the Caputo fractional derivative operator of order is used. With the use of appropriate grid points, this method converts FPDEs into a system of nonlinear algebraic equations. We achieve a solution by solving these nonlinear algebraic equations by the Newton–Raphson method. Tables and graphs show that the suggested method produces superior results. We provide various illustrative examples to establish the effectiveness of the suggested concept, and the outcomes support the applicability of the suggested strategy. Obtained results are numerically expressed in terms of absolute errors. Finally, convergence analyses are discussed as some theorem with proof.

Abstract:This paper details the development of the weak form formulations of finite element type methods using wavelets as basis functions. Such approaches are different from most wavelets based ones that are derived from the strong form. The advantages of the proposed formulation are that there Is no need to enforce natural boundary conditions and that the lower order derivatives of the wavelet bases are involved in the connection coefficients. Various approaches to deal with essential boundary and interface conditions are investigated, and algorithms to compute the associated connection coefficients are derived. To validate the proposed method, two numerical examples are described.

Abstract:We study a class of partial differential equations (PDEs) in the family of the so-called Euler-Poincaré differential systems, with the aim of developing a foundation for numerical algorithms of their solutions. This requires particular attention to the mathematical properties of this system when the associated class of elliptic operators possesses non-smooth kernels. By casting the system in its Lagrangian (or characteristics) form, we first formulate a particles system algorithm in free space with homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions for the evolving fields. We next examine the deformation of the system when non-homogeneous "constant stream" boundary conditions are assumed. We show how this simple change at the boundary deeply affects the nature of the evolution, from hyperbolic-like to dispersive with a non-trivial dispersion relation, and examine the potentially regularizing properties of singular kernels offered by this deformation. From the particle algorithm viewpoint, kernel singularities affect the existence and uniqueness of solutions to the corresponding ordinary differential equations systems. We illustrate this with the case when the operator kernel assumes a conical shape over the spatial variables, and examine in detail two-particle dynamics under the resulting lack of Lipschitz-continuity. Curiously, we find that for the conically-shaped kernels the motion of the related two-dimensional waves can become completely integrable under appropriate initial data. This reduction projects the two-dimensional system to the one-dimensional completely integrable Shallow-Water equation [Camassa, R. and Holm, D. D., Phys. Rev. Lett., 71, 1961-1964, 1993], while retaining the full dependence on two spatial dimensions for the single channel solutions.

On k-wave solutions of quasilinear systems of partial differential equations

Abstract:In this paper, we establish a relation between two seemingly unrelated concepts for solving first-order hyperbolic quasilinear systems of partial differential equations in many dimensions. These concepts are based on a variant of the conditional symmetry method and on the generalized method of characteristics. We present the outline of recent results on multiple Riemann wave solutions of these systems. An auxiliary result concerning a modification of the Frobenius theorem for integration is used. We apply this result in order to show that the conditional symmetry method can deliver larger classes of multiple Riemann wave solutions, through a simpler procedure, than the one obtained from the generalized method of characteristics. We demonstrate that solutions can be interpreted physically as a superposition of k single waves. These theoretical considerations are illustrated by examples of hydrodynamic-type systems in (n+1) dimensions.

Abstract:We develop an approximation scheme for a function defined on a bounded interval by combining techniques of boundary extension and Coiflet-type wavelet expansion. Such a modified wavelet approximation allows each expansion coefficient being explicitly expressed by a single-point sampling of the function, and allows boundary values and derivatives of the bounded function to be embedded in the modified wavelet basis. By incorporating this approximation scheme into the conventional Galerkin method, the interpolating property makes the solution of boundary value problems with strong nonlinearity to be very effective and accurate. As an example, we have applied the proposed method to the solution of the Bratu-type equations. Results demonstrate a much better accuracy than most methods developed so far. Interestingly, unlike most existing methods, numerical errors of the present solutions are not sensitive to the nonlinear intensity of the equations.

Abstract:This article will start from the fundamental theory of wavelet Multiresolution Analysis and provide a brief summary of the advantages and limitations of various numerical methods based on wavelet bases. The objective of this article is to assist researchers in choosing the appropriate numerical methodologies for their particular physical issues. Furthermore, it will explore prospective advancements in wavelet‐based techniques, offering valuable insights for researchers committed to enhancing wavelet numerical methods in the field of computational physics. The quantitative study of many physical problems ultimately boils down to solving various partial differential equations (PDEs). Wavelet analysis, known as the "mathematical microscope", has been hailed for its excellent Multiresolution Analysis (MRA) capabilities and its basis functions that possess various desirable mathematical qualities such as orthogonality, compact support, low‐pass filtering, and interpolation. These properties make wavelets a powerful tool for efficiently solving these PDEs. Over the past 30 years, numerical methods such as wavelet Galerkin methods, wavelet collocation methods, wavelet finite element methods, and wavelet integral collocation methods have been proposed and successfully applied in the quantitative analysis of various physical problems. Abstract:A sixth-order accurate wavelet integral collocation method is proposed for solving high-order nonlinear boundary value problems in three dimensions. In order to realize the establishment of this method, an approximate expression of multiple integrals of a continuous function defined in a three-dimensional bounded domain is proposed by combining wavelet expansion and Lagrange boundary extension. Through applying such an integral technique, during the solution of nonlinear partial differential equations, the unknown function and its lower-order partial derivatives can be approximately expressed by its highest-order partial derivative values at nodes. A set of nonlinear algebraic equations with respect to these nodal values of the highest-order partial derivative is obtained using a collocation method. The validation and convergence of the proposed method are examined through several benchmark problems, including the eighth-order two-dimensional and fourth-order three-dimensional boundary value problems and the large deflection bending of von Kármán plates. Results demonstrate that the present method has higher accuracy and convergence rate than most existing numerical methods. Most importantly, the convergence rate of the proposed method seems to be independent of the order of the differential equations, because it is always sixth order for second-, fourth-. sixth-, and even eighth-order problems.

Abstract:The solution of the wave equation in a polyhedral domain in $\mathbb{R}^3$ admits an asymptotic singular expansion in a neighborhood of the corners and edges. In this article we formulate boundary and screen problems for the wave equation as equivalent boundary integral equations in time domain, study the regularity properties of their solutions and the numerical approximation. Guided by the theory for elliptic equations, graded meshes are shown to recover the optimal approximation rates known for smooth solutions. Numerical experiments illustrate the theory for screen problems. In particular, we discuss the Dirichlet and Neumann problems, as well as the Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator and applications to the sound emission of tires.

Abstract:We propose a method to construct numerical solutions of parabolic equations on the unit sphere. The time discretization uses Laplace transforms and quadrature. The spatial approximation of the solution employs radial basis functions restricted to the sphere. The method allows us to construct high accuracy numerical solutions in parallel. We establish $L_2$ error estimates for smooth and nonsmooth initial data, and describe some numerical experiments.

Abstract:Decoupled fractional Laplacian wave equation can describe the seismic wave propagation in attenuating media. Fourier pseudospectral implementations, which solve the equation in spatial frequency domain, are the only existing methods for solving the equation. For the earth media with curved boundaries, the pseudospectral methods could be less attractive to handle the irregular computational domains. In the paper, we propose a radial basis function collocation method that can easily tackle the irregular domain problems. Unlike the pseudospectral methods, the proposed method solves the equation in physical variable domain. The directional fractional Laplacian is chosen from varied definitions of fractional Laplacian. Particularly, the vector Grünwald-Letnikov formula is employed to approximate fractional directional derivative of radial basis function. The convergence and stability of the method are numerically investigated by using the synthetic solution and the long-time simulations, respectively. The method's flexibility is studied by considering homogeneous and multi-layer media having regular and irregular geometric boundaries.

Abstract:We introduce a Monte Carlo method for computing derivatives of the solution to a partial differential equation (PDE) with respect to problem parameters (such as domain geometry or boundary conditions). Derivatives can be evaluated at arbitrary points, without performing a global solve or constructing a volumetric grid or mesh. The method is hence well suited to inverse problems with complex geometry, such as PDE-constrained shape optimization. Like other walk on spheres (WoS) algorithms, our method is trivial to parallelize, and is agnostic to boundary representation (meshes, splines, implicit surfaces, etc.), supporting large topological changes. We focus in particular on screened Poisson equations, which model diverse problems from scientific and geometric computing. As in differentiable rendering, we jointly estimate derivatives with respect to all parameters -- hence, cost does not grow significantly with parameter count. In practice, even noisy derivative estimates exhibit fast, stable convergence for stochastic gradient-based optimization, as we show through examples from thermal design, shape from diffusion, and computer graphics.

Numerical Methods for Partial Differential Equations

Abstract:Haar wavelet collocation method is applied for the numerical solution of fractional partial differential equations. The proposed method is first applied to one‐dimensional fractional partial differential equations and then it is extended to higher‐dimensional fractional partial differential equations as well. Both time‐fractional as well as space–time‐fractional partial differential equations are considered. The fractional order derivatives involved are evaluated using the Caputo definition. The proposed method is semi‐analytic as it involves exact integration of Caputo derivative. The proposed method is widely applicable and robust. The method is tested upon several test problems. The results are computed and presented in the form of maximum absolute errors. The numerical tests confirm the accuracy, efficiency and simple applicability of the proposed method.

Abstract:This paper focuses on developing an efficient numerical approach based on Taylor-wavelets for solving three-point (nonlocal) singular boundary value problems. A special case of the considered problem, with strongly nonlinear source term, arises in thermal explosion in a cylindrical reactor. The existence of a unique solution is thoroughly discussed for the considered problem. To establish the current method, an equivalent integral equation is constructed for the original problem to overcome the singularity at the origin. The evaluation of derivatives appearing in the model is also avoided in this way. Moreover, this scheme skips the integrals while reducing them into a system of nonlinear algebraic equations. Unlike other methods, this new approach does not require any linearization, discretization, perturbation, or evaluation of nonlinear terms separately. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first application of the wavelet-based method to the considered problem. The formulation of the proposed method is further supported by its convergence and error analysis. Some numerical examples are solved to validate the efficiency and robustness of the proposed method. Further, the computational convergence rate (COR) is reported for the first few examples to assist the obtained numerical solution. Moreover, the obtained numerical results are compared with those of existing techniques in the literature.

Abstract:This study applies the RBF wavelet series to the evaluation of analytical solutions of linear time-dependent wave and diffusion problems of any dimensionality and geometry. To the best of the author's knowledge, such analytical solutions have never been achieved before. The RBF wavelets can be understood an alternative for multidimensional problems to the standard Fourier series via fundamental and general solutions of partial differential equation. The present RBF wavelets are infinitely differential, compactly supported, orthogonal over different scales and very simple. The rigorous mathematical proof of completeness and convergence is still missing in this study. The present work may open a new window to numerical solution and theoretical analysis of many other high-dimensional time-dependent PDE problems under arbitrary geometry.

Abstract:We establish partial smoothing properties of the transition semigroup associated to the linear stochastic wave equation driven by a cylindrical Wiener noise on a separable Hilbert space. These new results allow the study of related vector-valued infinite-dimensional PDEs in spaces of functions which are Hölder continuous along special directions. As an application we prove strong uniqueness for semilinear stochastic wave equations involving nonlinearities of Hölder type. We stress that we are able to prove well-posedness although the Markov semigroup is not strong Feller.

Abstract:Many applications in science call for the numerical simulation of systems on manifolds with spherical topology. Through use of integer spin weighted spherical harmonics we present a method which allows for the implementation of arbitrary tensorial evolution equations. Our method combines two numerical techniques that were originally developed with different applications in mind. The first is Huffenberger and Wandelt's spectral decomposition algorithm to perform the mapping from physical to spectral space. The second is the application of Luscombe and Luban's method, to convert numerically divergent linear recursions into stable nonlinear recursions, to the calculation of reduced Wigner d-functions. We give a detailed discussion of the theory and numerical implementation of our algorithm. The properties of our method are investigated by solving the scalar and vectorial advection equation on the sphere, as well as the 2+1 Maxwell equations on a deformed sphere.
