Abstract:It is known that the Lyapunov exponent is not continuous at certain points in the space of continuous quasi-periodic cocycles. We show that the Lyapunov exponent is continuous for a higher-dimensional analytic category in this paper. It has a modulus of continuity of the form exp(−∣logt∣ σ ) for some 0 < σ < 1.

Abstract:Given a family of self-adjoint operators (At)t∈T$${(A_t)_{t \in T}}$$ indexed by a parameter t in some topological space T, necessary and sufficient conditions are given for the spectrum σ(At)$${\sigma(A_t)}$$ to be Vietoris continuous with respect to t. Equivalently the boundaries and the gap edges are continuous in t. If (T, d) is a complete metric space with metric d, these conditions are extended to guarantee Hölder continuity of the spectral boundaries and of the spectral gap edges. As a corollary, an upper bound is provided for the size of closing gaps.

Abstract:I will show that operator of analytic (harmonic) continuation on a lattice graph has a positive spectrum. I use a theorem about positivity of eigenvalues of totally positive matrices. I conjecture that by approximation the similar result holds in continuous case on a plane.

Abstract:Let be a complex unital Banach algebra, let be an element in it and let ε . In this article, we study the upper and lower hemicontinuity and joint continuity of the condition spectrum and its level set maps in appropriate settings. We emphasize that the empty interior of the ε -level set of a condition spectrum at a given ε plays a pivotal role in the continuity of the required maps at that point. Further, uniform continuity of the condition spectrum map is obtained in the domain of normal matrices.

Spectral inclusions of perturbed normal operators and applications

Abstract:We consider a normal operator $T$ on a Hilbert space $H$. Under various assumptions on the spectrum of $T$, we give bounds for the spectrum of $T+A$ where $A$ is $T$-bounded with relative bound less than 1 but we do not assume that $A$ is symmetric or normal. If the imaginary part of the spectrum of $T$ is bounded, then the spectrum of $T+A$ is contained in the region between certain hyperbolas whose asymptotic slope depends on the $T$-bound of $A$. If the spectrum of $T$ is contained in a bisector, then the spectrum of $T+A$ is contained in the area between certain rotated hyperbola. The case of infinite gaps in the spectrum of $T$ is studied. Moreover, we prove a stability result for the essential spectrum of $T+A$. If $A$ is even $p$-subordinate to $T$, then we obtain stronger results for the localisation of the spectrum of $T+A$.

Continuity of the Spectrum of Dirac Operators of Spectral Triples for the Spectral Propinquity

Abstract:The spectral propinquity is a distance, up to unitary equivalence, on the class of metric spectral triples. We prove in this paper that if a sequence of metric spectral triples converges for the propinquity, then the spectra of the Dirac operators for these triples do converge to the spectrum of the Dirac operator at the limit. We obtain this result by first proving that, in an appropriate sense induced by some natural metric, the bounded, continuous functional calculi defined by the Dirac operators also converge. As an application of our work, we see, in particular, that action functionals of a wide class of metric spectral triples are continuous for the spectral propinquity, which clearly connects convergence for the spectral propinquity with the applications of noncommutative geometry to mathematical physics. This fact is a consequence of results on the continuity of the multiplicity of eigenvalues of Dirac operators. In particular, we formalize convergence of adjoinable operators of different C*-correspondences, endowed with appropriate quantum metric data.

Spectral estimates of dynamically-defined and amenable operator families

Abstract:We consider kernel operators defined by a dynamical system. The Hausdorff distance of spectra is estimated by the Hausdorff distance of subsystems. We prove that the spectrum map is $ \frac{1}{2} $-Hölder continuous provided the group action and kernel are Lipschitz continuous and the group has strict polynomial growth. Also, we prove that the continuity can be improved resulting in the spectrum map being Lipschitz continuous provided the kernel is instead locally-constant. This complements a 1990 result by J.~Avron; P.H.M.v.~Mouche; B.~Simon establishing that one-dimensional discrete quasiperiodic Schrödinger operators with Lipschitz continuous potentials, e.g., the Almost Mathieu Operator, exhibit spectral $ \frac{1}{2} $-Hölder continuity. Also, this complements a 2019 result by S.~Beckus; J.~Bellissard; H.~Cornean establishing that $ d $-dimensional discrete subshift Schrödinger operators with locally-constant potentials, e.g., the Fibonacci Hamiltonian, exhibit spectral Lipschitz continuity. Our work exposes the connection between the past two results, and the group, e.g., the Heisenberg group, needs not be the integer lattice nor abelian.

Abstract:We continue to investigate the absolutely continuous spectrum of generalized indefinite strings. By following an approach of Deift and Killip, we establish stability of the absolutely continuous spectra of two more model examples of generalized indefinite strings under rather wide perturbations. In particular, one of these results allows us to prove that the absolutely continuous spectrum of the isospectral problem associated with the two-component Camassa—Holm system in a certain dispersive regime is essentially supported on the set (−∞, −1/2] ⋃ [1/2, ∞).

On Spectral Inclusion Sets and Computing the Spectra and Pseudospectra of Bounded Linear Operators

Abstract:In this paper we derive novel families of inclusion sets for the spectrum and pseudospectrum of large classes of bounded linear operators, and establish convergence of particular sequences of these inclusion sets to the spectrum or pseudospectrum, as appropriate. Our results apply, in particular, to bounded linear operators on a separable Hilbert space that, with respect to some orthonormal basis, have a representation as a bi-infinite matrix that is banded or band-dominated. More generally, our results apply in cases where the matrix entries themselves are bounded linear operators on some Banach space. In the scalar matrix entry case we show that our methods, given the input information we assume, lead to a sequence of approximations to the spectrum, each element of which can be computed in finitely many arithmetic operations, so that, with our assumed inputs, the problem of determining the spectrum of a band-dominated operator has solvability complexity index one, in the sense of Ben-Artzi et al. (C. R. Acad. Sci. Paris, Ser. I 353 (2015), 931-936). As a concrete and substantial application, we apply our methods to the determination of the spectra of non-self-adjoint bi-infinite tridiagonal matrices that are pseudoergodic in the sense of Davies (Commun. Math. Phys. 216 (2001) 687-704).

Abstract:Two-dimensional maps with discontinuities are considered. It is shown that, in the presence of discontinuities, the essential spectrum of the transfer operator is large whenever it acts on a Banach space with norm that is stronger than $L^\infty$ or $BV$. Three classes of examples are introduced and studied, both expanding and partially expanding. In two dimensions there is complication due to the geometry of the discontinuities, an issue not present in the one-dimensional case and which is explored in this work.

Abstract:In this article, the existence of the spectrum (the eigenvalues) for the nonlinear continuous operators acting in the Banach spaces is investigated. For the study, this question is used a different approach that allows the studying of all eigenvalues of the nonlinear operator relative to another nonlinear operator. Here shows that in nonlinear operators, case is necessary to seek the spectrum of the given nonlinear operator relative to another nonlinear operator satisfying certain conditions. The different examples, for which eigenvalues can be found are provided. Moreover, the nonlinear problems including parameters are studied.

Abstract:Let $\mathfrak{M}$ be a von Neumann algebra and let $A$ be a nonzero positive element of $\mathfrak{M}$. By $\sigma_A(T) $ and $r_A(T)$ we denote the $A$-spectrum and the $A$-spectral radius of $T\in\mathfrak{M}^A$, respectively. In this paper, we show that $\sigma(PTP, P\mathfrak{M} P)\subseteq \sigma_A(T)$. Sufficient conditions for the equality $\sigma_A(T)=\sigma(PTP, P\mathfrak{M} P)$ to be true are presented. Also, we show that $\sigma_A(T)$ is finite for any $T\in\mathfrak{M}^A$ if and only if $A$ is in the socle of $\mathfrak{M}$. Next , we consider the relationship between elements $S$ and $T\in\mathfrak{M}^A$ that satisfy one of the following two conditions: (1) $\sigma_A(SX)=\sigma_A(TX)$ for all $X\in\mathfrak{M}^A$, (2) $r_A(SX)= r_A(TX)$ for all $X\in\mathfrak{M}^A$. Finally, a Gleason-Kahane-Żelazko's theorem for the $A$-spectrum is derived.% Finally, we introduce and study the notion of the $A$-approximate point spectrum for element of $X\in\mathfrak{M}^A$.

Abstract:This paper is a follow-up to a recent article about the essential spectrum of Toeplitz operators acting on the Bergman space over the unit ball. As mentioned in the said article, some of the arguments can be carried over to the case of bounded symmetric domains and some cannot. The aim of this paper is to close the gaps to obtain comparable results for general bounded symmetric domains. In particular, we show that a Toeplitz operator on the Bergman space $A^p_{\nu}$ is Fredholm if and only if all of its limit operators are invertible. Even more generally, we show that this is in fact true for all band-dominated operators, an algebra that contains the Toeplitz algebra. Moreover, we characterize compactness and explain how the Berezin transform comes into play. In particular, we show that a bounded linear operator is compact if and only if it is band-dominated and its Berezin transform vanishes at the boundary. For $p = 2$ "band-dominated" can be replaced by "contained in the Toeplitz algebra".

Abstract:We study spectral properties of the Neumann-Poincaré operator on planar domains with corners with particular emphasis on existence of continuous spectrum and pure point spectrum. We show that the rate of resonance at continuous spectrum is different from that at eigenvalues, and then derive a method to distinguish continuous spectrum from eigenvalues. We perform computational experiments using the method to see whether continuous spectrum and pure point spectrum appear on domains with corners. For the computations we use a modification of the Nyström method which makes it possible to construct high-order convergent discretizations of the Neumann-Poincaré operator on domains with corners. The results of experiments show that all three possible spectra, absolutely continuous spectrum, singularly continuous spectrum, and pure point spectrum, may appear depending on domains. We also prove rigorously two properties of spectrum which are suggested by numerical experiments: symmetry of spectrum (including continuous spectrum), and existence of eigenvalues on rectangles of high aspect ratio.
