Abstract:To improve the poor stability of nano zero-valent iron (nZVI), corn-straw biochar (BC) was used as a support for the synthesis of composites of nZVI-biochar (nZVI/BC) in different mass ratios. After a thorough characterization, the obtained nZVI/BC composite was used to remove hexavalent chromium [Cr( VI )] in an aquatic system under varying conditions including composite amount, Cr( VI ) concentration, and pH. The obtained results show that the treatment efficiency varied in the following order: nZVI–BC (1 : 3) > nZVI–BC (1 : 5) > nZVI alone > BC alone. This order indicates the higher efficiency of composite material and the positive effect of nZVI content in the composite. Similarly, the composite dosage and Cr( VI ) concentration had significant effects on the removal performance and 2 g L −1 and 6 g L −1 were considered to be the optimum dose at a Cr( VI ) concentration of 20 mg L −1 and 100 mg L −1 , respectively. The removal efficiency was maximum (100%) at pH 2 whereas solution pH increased significantly after the reaction (from 2 to 4.13). The removal kinetics of Cr( VI ) was described by a pseudo-second-order model which indicated that the removal process was mainly controlled by the rate of chemical adsorption. The thermodynamics was more in line with the Freundlich model which indicated that the removal was multi-molecular layer adsorption. TEM-EDS, XRD, and XPS were applied to characterize the crystal lattice and structural changes of the material to specify the interfacial chemical behaviour on the agent surface. These techniques demonstrate that the underlying mechanisms of Cr( VI ) removal include adsorption, chemical reduction–oxidation reaction, and co-precipitation on the surface of the nZVI–BC composite. The results indicated that the corn-straw BC as a carrier material highly improved Cr( VI ) removal performance of nZVI and offered better utilization of the corn straw.

Abstract:Abstract BackgroundNanoscale zerovalent iron (nZVI) is a promising material for removing heavy metals from wastewater. However, passivation of nZVI hinders its efficiency in water treatment. Loading another catalytic metal has been found to improve the efficiency significantly. In this study, Cu/Fe bimetallic nanoparticles were prepared by liquid-phase chemical reduction for removal of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) from wastewater. Purpose of this study was to clarify the effects and mechanisms of Cu loading on the removal efficiency of Cr(VI).ResultsThe results showed that Cu loading can significantly enhance the removal efficiency of Cr(VI) by 29.3% to 84.0%, and the optimal Cu loading rate was 3% (wt%). The removal efficiency decreased with increasing initial pH and Cr(VI) concentration. It was found that Cr(VI) removal followed a pseudo-first-order kinetic model. When the Cu loading rate was 3%, the initial concentration of Cr(VI) was 100 mg/L, the observed first-order rate coefficient (kobs) was 0.016 min-1 for Cu/Fe bimetallic nanoparticles at pH of 3.5, which was twice than that of nZVI (0.008 min-1). X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis indicated that Cr(VI) was completely reduced to Cr(Ⅲ) and precipitated on the particle surface as hydroxylated Cr(OH)3 and CrxFe1-x(OH)3 coprecipitation.ConclusionsIn this study, it was found that the loading of Cu can significantly increase the specific surface area and the Cr(VI) remove efficiency of nZVI, and the removal efficiency decreases with increasing pH and Cr(VI) initial concentration. Therefore, Cu loading can alleviate the passivation of nZVI effectively and can be beneficial for the application of iron-based nanomaterials in remediation of wastewater.
Facile Improvement of Nanoscale Zero-Valent Iron Activity with Exceptional Stability for Reduction of Cr(VI)

Abstract:In the present study, a highly active reaction system of nanoscale zero-valent (nZVI) was successfully established by enhancing nZVI with a biodegradable complexing agent (CA) and applied to hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] removal. Both iminodisuccinic acid (IDS) and N,N-bis(carboxymethyl)glutamic (GLDA) are good biodegradable CAs with strong ability to Cr(III)/Fe(II)/Fe(III). Cr(VI) (10.0 mg L-1) removal efficiency by nZVI increased from 60.1% to 100.0% with the addition of 4.0 mmol L-1 IDS or GLDA for 60 min. A characterization analysis suggested that nZVI and CA enhanced Cr(VI) removal by decreasing the surface passivation layer, which was expected to be (CrxFe1-x)(OH)3. In addition, the Cr(VI) removal efficiency decreased with increasing initial pH, and appropriate CA dosage (4.0 mmol L-1) and temperature (25.0 degrees C) were beneficial for the efficient reduction of Cr(VI). An amount of 94.8% of Cr(VI) removal was achieved within the initial 2 min when the experiment conditions were as follows: 0.1 g L-1 nZVI, 4.0 mmol L-1 GLDA, the temperature at 25.0 degrees C, an initial pH of 7.0, and stirring at 200 r min-1. And the Cr(VI) removal by GLDA improved nZVI maintained above 84.3% after three consecutive cycles. The results indicate CA-enhanced-nZVI could be a promising approach for the Cr(VI) removal in a solution.
Preparation of highly dispersive and antioxidative nano zero-valent iron for the removal of hexavalent chromium

Abstract:In this study, carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) was employed to stabilize zero-valent iron nanoparticles (CMC-nFe0) to improve their dispersity and antioxidation for enhanced hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) removal. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) observation revealed that the nFe0 agglomerated in clusters, while the CMC-nFe0 connected as chains and presented higher dispersity. Therefore, compared with 54% of the nFe0, the Cr(VI) removal rate of the CMC-nFe0 increased by 0.8 time, reaching 97%. Besides, the nFe0 precipitated in 1 d and was obviously oxidized within 7 d under anoxic condition, leading to a rapid decease of Cr(VI) removal efficiency from 54% to 3% in 56 d. In contrast, the CMC-nFe0 showed no obvious subsidence and oxidized phenomenon within 14 d, which retained a relatively high Cr(VI) removal efficiency of 63% in 56 d, contributing to effective blockage of dissolved oxygen infiltrating from solution to nFe0 particles in presence of CMC. After reaction, the valence state distribution of Cr between solution and material surface indicated that Cr(VI) reduction was dominant comparing to physical adsorption to particles in the remediation process conducted by CMC-nFe0. In addition, lower initial pH and higher iron dosage facilitated Cr(VI) removal. Those results indicated that the dispersive and antioxidative characteristics of CMC-nFe0 were significantly superior to those of nFe0, and CMC stabilization thereafter can be a promising method to promote Cr(VI) elimination by nFe0.

Abstract:Nano zero-valent iron (Fe0, nZVI) has been extensively utilized in the treatment of dyed wastewater. However, the dispersibility, stability and reusability of nZVI need to be improved for both efficiency and environmental safety. One nZVI modified nanofiber composite membrane was successfully fabricated by electrospinning, and the performances in different catalytic systems were evaluated. The synthesized composite mat was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The loaded nZVI was verified by the change of fiber diameters and the distribution of iron element with/without loading. The composite membrane possessed good recyclability and dispersion property of nZVI with a mean diameter of 114.46 nm. Three Fenton-like oxidation systems (H2O2, Na2S2O8, and NaClO2) were selected and investigated for the degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB) in water using the as-prepared composite as a catalyzer. The degradability relationship of the oxidation systems was NaClO2>Na2S2O8>H2O2 with observed rate constants (Kobs) of 0.3155, 0.0547, and 0.014, respectively. 50 mg L−1 RhB was completely degraded by 1.5 mM NaClO2 in 15min, which is the best compared with the other two systems. The major free radical species (·OH, SO4·- and ClO2·) in the three oxidation systems were identified by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and quenching studies. The degradation capacity could be maintained after five recycles and the leached nZVI from the composite was negligible (<0.55%). For the degradation process, the contribution of dark adsorption (Kads = 1.5489 × 10−3) was much smaller than that of natural-light-derived photocatalysis (Kphoto = 1.5489 × 10−3) with the adsorption capacity of 4.32 mg g−1 and oxidative degradation amounts of 9.46 mg g−1, 10.90 mg g−1 and 12.32 mg g−1 in H2O2, Na2S2O8 and NaClO2 systems, respectively. Our results demonstrated that the synthesized composite membrane demonstrated good catalytic properties with good recyclability and stability, and NaClO2 was the most efficacious system for RhB degradation in water.

Abstract:This study describes the chromium (VI) removal in aqueous solution by nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI)-Fe3O4 nanocomposites, which were prepared by a novel in situ reduction method. The effects of several factors, including ionic strength, temperature, co-existing anions and cations and natural organic matters were evaluated. The ionic strength was found to be insignificant to the removal efficiency, while temperature was critical. With the increase in temperature from 10–40°C, 32% removal efficiency increased within 2h from 49.96%. Most anions hindered the reaction, especially in high concentration, such as HCO3- and PO43-, causing a drop of the removal efficiency from 66.48% to 57.47% and 59.93% respectively. In contrast, both cations and moderate natural organic matter facilitated the removal of Cr(VI). It is noteworthy that calcium hardness can greatly promote the reaction, 100% removal efficiency was achieved within 90min and the rate constant k2 reached 0.528gmg−1min−1 after adding 40mgL−1 Ca2+, which was ten times more than that in other cases. Possible mechanism was presented, and TEM, SEM and FITR analyses were used to verify these speculations. Hopefully, these results can contribute to a better development of the water treatment facilitates for nZVI-Fe3O4 composites, maintaining its high efficiency in real aqueous environment.
Highly Active Nanoscale Zero-Valent Iron (nzvi)–fe3o4 Nanocomposites for the Removal of Chromium(vi) from Aqueous Solutions

Abstract:For the first time, nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI)–Fe3O4 nanocomposites, prepared by an in situ reduction method, are employed for chromium(VI) removal in aqueous environment. 96.4% Cr(VI) could be removed by these novel materials within 2h under pH of 8.0 and initial Cr concentration of 20mgL−1, compared with 48.8% by bare nFe3O4 and 18.8% by bare nZVI. Effects of several factors, including mass composition of nZVI–Fe3O4 nanocomposites, initial pH and Cr(VI) concentration, were evaluated. The optimal ratio of nFe3O4 to nZVI mass lies at 12:1 with a fixed nZVI concentration of 0.05gL−1. Low pH and initial Cr(VI) concentration could increase both the Cr(VI) removal efficiency and reaction rate. Corresponding reaction kinetics fitted well with the pseudo second-order adsorption model. Free energy change (ΔG) of this reaction was calculated to be −4.6kJmol−1 by thermodynamic study, which confirmed its spontaneous and endothermic characteristic. The experimental data could be well described by the Langmuir and Freundlich model, and the maximum capacity (qmax) obtained from the Langmuir model was 100 and 29.43mgg−1 at pH 3.0 and 8.0, respectively. The reaction mechanism was discussed in terms of the mutual benefit brought by the electron transfer from Fe0 to Fe3O4.
Chromium Removal Using Resin Supported Nanoscale Zero-Valent Iron.

Abstract:Resin supported nanoscale zero-valent iron (R-nZVI) was synthesized by the borohydride reduction method. Batch experiments were conducted to evaluate the factors affecting Cr(VI) removal. It was found that nZVI loads, resin dose, pH value and initial concentration of Cr(VI) were all important factors. Scanning electron microscopy showed that the nZVI particles in R-nZVI became sphere after reacting with Cr(VI). This phenomenon was attributed to the co-precipitation of Cr(III) and Fe(III) on the surface of resin. X-ray diffraction pattern confirmed that Fe(0) diminished after the reaction. At optimum conditions, the Cr(VI) removal efficiency was 84.4% when the initial concentration of Cr(VI) was 20.0 mg/L. Regeneration of R-nZVI and resin was possible. R-nZVI can also remove Cr(III) efficiently. However, the removal mechanisms of Cr(VI) (anion) and Cr(III) (cation) are different. The former is chemical reduction, while the latter is ion exchange at pH below 6.3 and precipitation at pH above 6.3. This study demonstrates that R-nZVI has the potential to become an effective agent for treating wastewater containing Cr(VI) and Cr(III).

Abstract:Cr (VI) is indispensable in industrial manufacturing, and its extensive use leads to severe heavy-metal pollution in the water environment around people, posing a great danger to physical health and living environment of multitudinous organisms. Expanded graphite (EG) is considered as a typical material for adsorption, while nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) can be applied to degrade and sedimentate various organic or inorganic pollutants. In this study, a simultaneous collaboration of EG and nZVI is carried out, with the investigation on the influence of different test conditions for adsorption performances. These findings demonstrate that nZVI@EG manifests favourable adsorptive performance on the removal of hexavalent chromium efficiently. nZVI, acting as an electron donor, is supposed to reduce Cr (VI) to Cr (III), turning itself into iron oxide or hydroxide. The whole process is an exothermic reaction, accompanying chemical reduction and physical adsorption. And Cr (III) is fastened on the appearance by deposition of chromium hydroxide or ferrochromium complex precipitation, which greatly reduces the total chromium content in the aqueous solution. Herein, as a new composite adsorbent, nZVI@EG shows promising prospects of practical applications in water contamination and environmental remediation.

Abstract:For the first time, nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI)-multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) nanocomposites were adopted to remove Cr(VI) from wastewater. Such composites were prepared through depositing nZVI particles onto MWCNTs by in situ reduction of ferrous sulfate and then characterized by TEM, SEM and XRD. The results showed that nZVI particles could disperse on the surface or into the network of MWCNTs. Compared to bare nZVI or nZVI-activated carbon composites, the nZVI-MWCNT nanocomposites exhibited around 36% higher efficiency on Cr(VI) removal. The mass ratio of nZVI to MWCNTs was optimized at 1:2, at ionic strength of 0.05M NaCl. The reaction followed a pseudo first-order model under different initial Cr(VI) concentrations and pHs. Low pH and initial Cr(VI) concentration could increase both removal efficiency and rate constants. Anions, such as SO(4)(2-), NO(3)(-) and HCO(3)(-), exhibited negative effects on the removal of Cr(VI), while the effects of PO(4)(3-) and SiO(3)(2-) were insignificant. Overall, nZVI-MWCNT nanocomposites offer a promising alternative material for the removal of Cr(VI) ions from wastewater.

Abstract:Nano zerovalent iron (nZVI) has been broadly used in the treatment of chromium (Cr) pollution. However, conventional nZVI particles are prone to surface oxidation and particle agglomeration, limiting their effectiveness in contaminant removal. To address these issues, sulfidated nZVI (S-nZVI) was synthesized on the corn stover biochar (BC) surface for rapid removal of Cr(VI) from water. Sedimentation and column transport experiments demonstrated that S-nZVI@BC exhibits excellent dispersion and transport properties, efficiently removing Cr(VI) in the pH range of 2.5–5.0 and showing minimal impact from dissolved oxygen. The Fe 0 , Fe(II), and S 2− components of the material, along with the leached Fe 2+ ions, contributed to the Cr(VI) removal. A portion of the removed Cr(VI) was reduced to Cr(III) in solution, while another portion was adsorbed on the material's surface through precipitation, with 42.0% of Cr being adsorbed within 30 min. Cycling and water matrix interference experiments further demonstrated the material's excellent reusability and resistance to interference. Notably, the continuous Cr(VI) removal capability in column experiments and the reactivation potential of S-nZVI@BC highlight its promise for practical applications. Future studies are suggested to explore the ecotoxicological effects of the S-nZVI@BC and its capacity for the simultaneous removal of multiple contaminants.

Abstract:Waste cassava fiber and tea polyphenols were used as carrier materials and reducing agents, respectively, to prepare nano-iron loaded cassava fiber composite (CF-FeNPs). This work investigated the factors affecting the removal of Cr(VI) by CF-FeNPs under different environmental conditions and the removal mechanism. The SEM characterization results show that as the initial Fe2+ concentration increases, the amount of nano-iron on the surface of the composite material increases. The results show that the increases of the initial Fe2+ content and dosage of CF-FeNPs can enhance the removal rate. Meanwhile, the decrease of the initial concentration of Cr(VI) solution and pH also beneficial for the removal performance. When pH=2.0 and the initial concentration of Cr(VI) is 10 mg/L, the removal rate of hexavalent chromium by CF-FeNPs can reach 81.4% within 2 h. The reaction conforms to the pseudo first-order kinetic model. The results of this study can provide technical reference for the remediation and treatment of Cr(VI)-containing wastewater.

Abstract:The overuse of chromium (Cr) has significantly negatively impacted human life and environmental sustainability. Recently, the employment of nano zero-valent iron (nZVI) for Cr(VI) removal is becoming an emerging approach. In this study, carbonized melamine foam-supported nZVI composites, prepared by a simple impregnation–carbonization–reduction method, were assessed for efficient Cr(VI) removal. The prepared composites were characterized by XPS, SEM, TEM, BET and XRD. Batch experiments at different conditions revealed that the amount of iron added, the temperature of carbonization and the initial Cr(VI) concentration were critical factors. Fe@MF-12.5-800 exhibited the highest removal efficiency of 99% Cr(VI) (10 mg/L) at neutral pH among the carbonized melamine foam-supported nZVI composites. Its iron particles were effectively soldered onto the carbonaceous surfaces within the pore networks. Moreover, Fe@MF-12.5-800 demonstrated remarkable stability (60%, 7 days) in an open environment compared with nZVI particles.

The presence of strain HS01 can maintain the structured morphology of the core-shell nanowires of NZVI, and a relatively more Fe0 and Fe(II) on the surface, resulting in the removal of passivating ferric precipitates on the NZVI surface and a higher Cr(VI) removal efficiency than the NZVI alone.
Structure and properties of nanoscale zero-valent iron supported on multimorphologies kaolinite and its enhanced removal of Cr(VI) from water

Abstract:Kaolinite has various morphologies, stable chemical properties, and abundant reserves. To broaden its application in the environment, kaolinite-based nano zero-valent iron composite (nZVI/Kaol) was synthesized for the removal of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) in water. The results showed that the removal rate of Cr(VI) by nZVI/Kaol (the Fe/Kaol mass ratio was 30%) reached 91.7% after 60 min reaction in Cr(VI) solution with an initial concentration of 20 mg/L (pH=7), while the removal efficiencies of Cr(VI) by nZVI and kaolinite were 34.5% and 5.6%. The characterization showed the different morphologies of kaolinite led to nZVI particles with uneven sizes loaded on the surface, that the size of nZVI loaded on rodlike kaolinite (50–100 nm) tended to be smaller than flaky kaolinite (150–200 nm), so the utilization of various sizes of nZVI enhanced Cr(VI) removal. The removal process matched the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir isothermal adsorption model better. The results of thermodynamic calculation verified the removal of Cr(VI) by nZVI/Kaol to be endothermic. FTIR and XPS analysis showed that the removal mechanism of Cr(VI) by nZVI/Kaol included adsorption, redox and co-precipitation.

Abstract:Heavy metals pollution has become a severe threat to human health and a challenging problem. Nano zero-valent iron (nZVI) has a unique core-shell structure. The core Fe 0 has the reducing ability, and the iron oxide shell provides the reaction site, showing superior performance for heavy metals removal. This review summarized recent approaches to the modification of nZVI materials such as bimetal modification, sulfidation modification, surfactant modification and porous material supported nZVI. Then, the influence of environmental factors on the removal of heavy metals by nZVI composites and the mechanism (adsorption, reduction and oxidation mechanisms) were analyzed. And the application of the composite material in the permeable reactive barrier (PRB) and fluidized bed reactor (FBR). Finally, the requirements and challenges for applying nZVI-based composites were described to provide a basis for the future synthesis of green, efficient, and environmental-friendly materials.

Abstract:Zero-valent iron nanoparticles (nZVI) modified with sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) as an anionic surfactant were successfully synthesized and applied to Cr (VI) removal. The prepared nanoparticles were characterized by field emission scanning electron microscope (FSEM), energy-dispersive spectrometry (EDS), and Fourier transform infrared spectrophotometer (FT-IR). Meanwhile, the surface charges of the stabilized nanoparticles were also determined. In this study, the kinetics of particle aggregation and sedimentation were investigated. It was found that the modified nanoparticles had great stabilization. Effects of pH, contact time, dosage of nanoparticles, and initial Cr(VI) concentrations on removal efficiency of the heavy metal ions were investigated and optimized. The maximum removal efficiency of Cr(VI) was obtained at pH 3.0 and 25 °C, at the value of 98.919 %. Cr(VI) removal occurred fast, and achieved equilibrium after 120 min. The maximum removal capacity reached up to 253.68 mg g−1 dry nanoparticles at a 300-mg L−1 Cr(VI)-containing sample. Kinetics study showed a rapid removal dynamics fitting pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The equilibrium data was nicely fit to the Freundlich model and indicates the adsorption of Cr(VI) was highly favorable. The obtained results indicated that nZVI modified by SDS could be used as an efficient alternative for removal of heavy metals with enhanced removal capacity and application stability.
