Abstract:Yellow Journalism: Puncturing the Myths, Defining the Legacies. W. Joseph Campbell. Westport, CT: Praeger, 2001. 209 pp. $62.50 hbk. Working much like an investigative reporter, W. Joseph Campbell strives to nail down disputed facts and sift through contested claims that surround the origins of yellow journalism, especially as practiced in New York City from 1895 to 1910. His book reminds historians how evidence can be colored by the professional in-fighting of journalists and by contemporaries' assumptions about media effects. The book's principal contribution comes from the chapters puncturing four myths about yellow journalism: the origins of the label itself, the presumed heavily immigrant audience of the New York yellow journals, the existence of the famous Remington-- Hearst telegrams, and the role of the yellow press in fomenting the Spanish-American War. Although some readers might find parts of these chapters a bit antiquarian, journalism historians will be rewarded with some useful insights. Campbell concludes that the label "yellow journalism" was only partly associated with the struggle between Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst over control of the Yellow Kid cartoons. Similar characterizations of the new journalism appeared in newspaper trade journals, the columns of competing New York newspapers, and even in joumalists' private correspondence before the dispute over the cartoons erupted publicly. More important, Campbell shows how "yellow journalism" became an epithet wielded as part of a boycott against Pulitzer's, and especially Hearst's, newspapers-a campaign strikingly similar to the 1840 Moral War against James Gordon Bennett's New York Herald (a comparison the author does not make). Campbell provides evidence challenging contemporaries' claims, accepted by some historians, that the blaring headlines, ample graphics, and sensationalistic writing characteristic of yellow journalism appealed to immigrant audiences grappling with English. Drawing on data from the 1900 Census, he concludes that yellow journalism did not find "its most hospitable environment in fastgrowing cities having sizable foreign-born populations. . ." Campbell debunks two myths that yellow journalism, especially Hearst's New York Journal, pushed the United States into war with Spain. He makes a strong argument that the telegram supposedly sent by Hearst to his illustrator in Cuba, Frederic Remington-"You furnish the pictures, and I'll furnish the war"-was apocryphal. Campbell builds a strong circumstantial case that Hearst's correspondent James Creelman fabricated or imagined the story. …
