Abstract:This paper is the second in a series of works dedicated to studying non-linear partial differential equations via derived geometric methods. We study a natural derived enhancement of the de Rham complex of a non-linear PDE via algebro-geometric techniques and examine its consequences for the functional differential calculus on the space of solutions. Applications to the BV-formalism with and without boundary conditions are discussed.

Abstract:Motivated by applications in computational anatomy, we consider a second-order problem in the calculus of variations on object manifolds that are acted upon by Lie groups of smooth invertible transformations. This problem leads to solution curves known as Riemannian cubics on object manifolds that are endowed with normal metrics. The prime examples of such object manifolds are the symmetric spaces. We characterize the class of cubics on object manifolds that can be lifted horizontally to cubics on the group of transformations. Conversely, we show that certain types of non-horizontal geodesics on the group of transformations project to cubics. Finally, we apply second-order Lagrange--Poincaré reduction to the problem of Riemannian cubics on the group of transformations. This leads to a reduced form of the equations that reveals the obstruction for the projection of a cubic on a transformation group to again be a cubic on its object manifold.

Abstract:On the generalized tangent bundle of a smooth manifold, we study skew-symmetric endomorphism satisfying an arbitrary polynomial equation with real constant coefficients. We study the compatibility of these structures with the de Rham operator and the Courant-Dorfman bracket. In particular we isolate several conditions that when restricted to the motivating example of generalized almost complex structure are equivalent to the notion of integrability.

Geometric Structures on the Complement of a Projective Arrangement

Abstract:Consider a complex projective space with its Fubini-Study metric. We study certain one parameter deformations of this metric on the complement of an arrangement (= finite union of hyperplanes) whose Levi-Civita connection is of Dunkl type. Interesting examples are obtained from the arrangements defined by finite complex reflection groups. We determine a parameter interval for which the metric is locally of Fubini-Study type, flat, or complex-hyperbolic. We find a finite subset of this interval for which we get a complete orbifold or at least a Zariski open subset thereof, and we analyze these cases in some detail (e.g., we determine their orbifold fundamental group). In this set-up, the principal results of Deligne-Mostow on the Lauricella hypergeometric differential equation and work of Barthel-Hirzebruch-Höfer on arrangements in a projective plane appear as special cases. Along the way we produce in a geometric manner all the pairs of complex reflection groups with isomorphic discriminants, thus providing a uniform approach to work of Orlik-Solomon.

Abstract:In [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2008.04625" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2008.04625">arXiv:2008.04625</a>] the authors constructed a classifying space for polystable holomorphic vector bundles on a compact Kähler manifold using analytic GIT theory. The aim of this article is to show that this classifying space taken in the weakly normal category is a coarse moduli space in the sense of complex geometry when the topology is fixed as induced by the space of Hermite-Einstein connections modulo the group of unitary gauge transformations.

Abstract:We prove an extension of a celebrated equivariant bifurcation result of J. Smoller and A. Wasserman, in an abstract framework for geometric variational problems. With this purpose, we prove a slice theorem for continuous affine actions of a (finite-dimensional) Lie group on Banach manifolds. As an application, we discuss equivariant bifurcation of constant mean curvature hypersurfaces, providing a few concrete examples and counter-examples.

Abstract:This series of papers is devoted to the study of deformations of Virasoro symmetries of the principal hierarchies associated to semisimple Frobenius manifolds. The main tool we use is a generalization of the bihamiltonian cohomology called the variational bihamiltonian cohomology. In the present paper, we give its definitions and compute the associated cohomology groups that will be used in our study of deformations of Virasoro symmetries. To illustrate its application, we classify the conformal bihamiltonian structures with semisimple hydrodynamic limits.
A variational principle in the parametric geometry of numbers

Abstract:We extend the parametric geometry of numbers (initiated by Schmidt and Summerer, and deepened by Roy) to Diophantine approximation for systems of $m$ linear forms in $n$ variables, and establish a new connection to the metric theory via a variational principle that computes fractal dimensions of a variety of sets of number-theoretic interest. The proof relies on two novel ingredients: a variant of Schmidt's game capable of computing the Hausdorff and packing dimensions of any set, and the notion of templates, which generalize Roy's rigid systems. In particular, we compute the Hausdorff and packing dimensions of the set of singular systems of linear forms and show they are equal, resolving a conjecture of Kadyrov, Kleinbock, Lindenstrauss and Margulis, as well as a question of Bugeaud, Cheung and Chevallier. As a corollary of Dani's correspondence principle, the divergent trajectories of a one-parameter diagonal action on the space of unimodular lattices with exactly two Lyapunov exponents with opposite signs has equal Hausdorff and packing dimensions. Other applications include quantitative strengthenings of theorems due to Cheung and Moshchevitin, which originally resolved conjectures due to Starkov and Schmidt respectively; as well as dimension formulas with respect to the uniform exponent of irrationality for simultaneous and dual approximation in two dimensions, completing partial results due to Baker, Bugeaud, Cheung, Chevallier, Dodson, Laurent and Rynne.

Abstract:We study generalized almost contact structures on odd-dimensional manifolds. We introduce a notion of integrability and show that the class of these structures is closed under symmetries of the Courant-Dorfman bracket, including T-duality. We define a notion of geometric type for generalized almost contact structures, and study its behavior under T-duality.

Superintegrable systems on conformal surfaces

Abstract:We reconsider non-degenerate second order superintegrable systems in dimension two as geometric structures on conformal surfaces. This extends a formalism developed by the authors, initially introduced for (pseudo-)Riemannian manifolds of dimension three and higher. The governing equations of non-degenerate second order superintegrability in dimension two are structurally significantly different from those valid in higher dimensions. Specifically, we find conformally covariant structural equations, allowing one to classify the (conformal classes of) non-degenerate second order superintegrable systems on conformal surfaces geometrically. We then specialise to second order properly superintegrable systems on surfaces with a (pseudo-)Riemannian metric and obtain structural equations in accordance with the known equations for Euclidean space. We finally give a single explicit set of purely algebraic equations defining the variety parametrising such systems on all constant curvature surfaces.

Flows of $G_2$-structures, II: Curvature, torsion, symbols, and functionals

Abstract:We continue the investigation of general geometric flows of $G_2$-structures initiated by the third author in "Flows of $G_2$-structures, I." Specifically, we determine the possible geometric flows (up to lower order terms) of $G_2$-structures which are second order quasilinear, by explicitly computing all independent second order differential invariants of $G_2$-structures which are $3$-forms. There are four symmetric $2$-tensors and two vector fields. We do this by deriving explicit computational descriptions of the decompositions of the curvature and the covariant derivative of the torsion into irreducible $G_2$-representations, as well as the decomposition of the $G_2$-Bianchi identity into independent relations. We also show that these six tensors arise as leading order contributions to the Euler-Lagrange equations for the energy functionals of the four independent torsion components, and we establish a $G_2$-analogue of the classical block decomposition of the Riemann curvature operator on oriented $4$-dimensional Riemannian manifolds. Finally, we present a large class of geometric flows of $G_2$-structures which are directly amenable to a deTurck type trick to establish short-time existence and uniqueness, with no initial assumption on the torsion, vastly generalizing an earlier result of Weiss-Witt for the negative gradient flow of the Dirichlet energy. This result is proved through a careful analysis of the principal symbols of the linearizations of these operators, establishing particular linear combinations for which one can prove that the failure of strict parabolicity is due precisely to the diffeomorphism invariance. A detailed introductory section on various foundational results of $G_2$-structure, several of which are not readily available in the literature, should be of wider interest and applicability.

Invariant Geometric Structures on Almost Abelian Lie Groups

Abstract:An almost Abelian group is a non-Abelian Lie group with a codimension 1 Abelian subgroup. This paper investigates invariant Hermitian and Kähler structures on connected complex almost Abelian groups. We find explicit formulas for the left and right Haar measures, the modular function, and left and right generator vector fields on simply connected complex almost Abelian groups. From the generator fields, we obtain invariant vector and tensor field frames, allowing us to find an explicit form for all invariant tensor fields. Namely, all such invariant tensor fields have constant coefficients in the invariant frame. From this, we classify all invariant Hermitian forms on complex simply connected almost Abelian groups, and we prove the nonexistence of invariant Kähler forms on all such groups. Via constructions involving the pullback of the quotient map, we extend the explicit description of invariant Hermitian structures and the nonexistence of Kähler structures to connected almost Abelian groups.

Generalized Geometries Constructed from Differential Forms on Cotangent Bundle

Abstract:We investigate the landscape of generalized geometries that can be derived from Monge-Ampère structures. Instead of following the approaches of Banos, Roubtsov, Kosmann-Schwarzbach, and others, we take a new path inspired by the results of Hu, Moraru, and Svoboda. We construct a large family of new generalized almost geometries derived from non-degenerate 2D symplectic Monge-Ampère structures and other related geometric objects, such as complex structures. We demonstrate that, under certain assumptions, non-degenerate Monge-Ampère structures give rise to quadric surfaces of generalized almost geometries. Additionally, we discuss the link between Monge-Ampère structures and Monge-Ampère equations within this framework.

Second-order superintegrable systems and Weylian geometry

Abstract:Second-order (maximally) conformally superintegrable Hamiltonian systems of abundant type are re-examined, revealing their underlying Weylian geometry. This allows one to naturally extend the concept of c-superintegrability from the realm of conformal geometries to that of Weylian manifolds. The resulting structures, in any dimension, are characterised by conformally invariant equations.

Abstract:Compatible discretizations, such as finite element exterior calculus, provide a discretization framework that respect the cohomological structure of the de Rham complex, which can be used to systematically construct stable mixed finite element methods. Multisymplectic variational integrators are a class of geometric numerical integrators for Lagrangian and Hamiltonian field theories, and they yield methods that preserve the multisymplectic structure and momentum-conservation properties of the continuous system. In this paper, we investigate the synthesis of these two approaches, by constructing discretization of the variational principle for Lagrangian field theories utilizing structure-preserving finite element projections. In our investigation, compatible discretization by cochain projections plays a pivotal role in the preservation of the variational structure at the discrete level, allowing the discrete variational structure to essentially be the restriction of the continuum variational structure to a finite-dimensional subspace. The preservation of the variational structure at the discrete level will allow us to construct a discrete Cartan form, which encodes the variational structure of the discrete theory, and subsequently, we utilize the discrete Cartan form to naturally state discrete analogues of Noether's theorem and multisymplecticity, which generalize those introduced in the discrete Lagrangian variational framework by Marsden et al. [29]. We will study both covariant spacetime discretization and canonical spatial semi-discretization, and subsequently relate the two in the case of spacetime tensor product finite element spaces.

Abstract:We study almost hypercomplex skew-Hermitian structures and almost quaternionic skew-Hermitian structures, as the geometric structures underlying $\mathsf{SO}^\ast(2n)$- and $\mathsf{SO}^\ast(2n)\mathsf{Sp}(1)$-structures, respectively. The corresponding intrinsic torsions were computed in the previous article in this series, and the algebraic types of the geometries were derived, together with the minimal adapted connections (with respect to certain normalizations conditions). Here we use these results to present the related first-order integrability conditions in terms of the algebraic types and other constructions. In particular, we use distinguished connections to provide a more geometric interpretation of the presented integrability conditions and highlight some features of certain classes. The second main contribution of this note is the illustration of several specific types of such geometries via a variety of examples. We use the bundle of Weyl structures and describe examples of $\mathsf{SO}^\ast(2n)\mathsf{Sp}(1)$-structures in terms of functorial constructions in the context of parabolic geometries.
