Abstract:We performed self-consistent charge density-functional tight-binding(SCC-DFTB)molecular dynamics simulations in conjunction with the multiscale shock technique(MSST)to study the initial chemical processes of solid-state structure octahydro-1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5,7-tetrazocine(HMX)under shock wave loading.The results show that the initial decomposition of shocked HMX is triggered by the N-NO2bond breaking at the low shock velocity of 8km/s.As the shock velocity increases to 11km/s,the homolytic cleavage of the N-NO2 bond is suppressed under high pressure, the C-H bond dissociation is the primary pathway for HMX decomposition in its early stages.At the same time,five-membered ring formation accompaning with hydrogen transfer from the CH2group to the-NO2 group is also a primary pathway.Our simulations suggest that the initial chemical processes of shocked HMX are dependent on the pressure.The new mechanism provides fundamental insight into the initial mechanism at the atomistic level,which is of important implication for understanding and development of energetic materials.

Abstract:The phase transitions and mechanical properties of the energetic material octahydro-1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5,7-tetrazocine (HMX) in three pure polymorphs crystals, alpha-, beta-, and delta-phases, have been studied theoretically. isothermal isobaric molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were performed in the temperature range of (5 to 555) K at 0 GPa and the pressure range of (0 to 40) GPa at 298 K. The lattice parameters and volumes show nonlinear dependence on the temperature and pressure. In the high-temperature regime, there exist two phase transitions, that is, from beta- to alpha-HMX at 360 K and from alpha- to delta-HMX at 440 K. Under high pressure, the beta-HMX transition to delta-HMX is shown at 27 GPa and 298 K. Within the range of temperature and pressure studies, it can be deduced that the beta-HMX at lower temperatures and higher pressures, the alpha-HMX at higher pressures, and the delta-HMX at lower temperatures have better malleability.

Abstract:ReaxFF-low-gradient reactive force field with CHONAl parameters is used to simulate thermal decomposition of 1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5,7-tetrazocane (HMX) and AlH3 composite. Perfect AlH3 and surface-passivated AlH3 particles were constructed to mix with HMX. The simulation results indicate HMX is adsorbed on the surface of particles to form O–Al and N–Al bonds. The decomposition of HMX and AlH3 composite is an exothermic reaction without energy barrier, but the decomposition of pure HMX needs to overcome the energy barrier of 133.57 kcal/mol. Active nano-AlH3 causes HMX to decompose rapidly at low temperature, and the primary decomposition pathway is the rupture of N–O and C–N bonds. Adiabatic simulation shows that the energy release and temperature increase of HMX/AlH3 is much larger than those of the HMX system. Surface-passivated AlH3 particles only affect the initial decomposition rate of HMX. In HMX and AlH3 composites, the strong attraction of Al in AlH3 to O and the activation of the intermediate reaction by H2 cause HMX to decompose rapidly. The final decomposition products of pure HMX are H2O, N2, and CO2, and those of HMX/AlH3 are H2O, N2, and Al-containing clusters dominated by C–Al. The final gas production shows that the specific impulse of HMX/AlH3 is larger than that of HMX.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:We have performed quantum-based multiscale simulations to study the initial chemical processes of condensed-phase octahydro-1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5,7-tetrazocine (HMX) under shock wave loading. A self-consistent charge density-functional tight-binding (SCC-DFTB) method was employed. The results show that the initial decomposition of shocked HMX is triggered by the N-NO(2) bond breaking under the low velocity impact (8 km/s). As the shock velocity increases (11 km/s), the homolytic cleavage of the N-NO(2) bond is suppressed under high pressure, the C-H bond dissociation becomes the primary pathway for HMX decomposition in its early stages. Anisotropic Responses and Initial Decomposition of Condensed-Phase Β-Hmx under Shock Loadings Via Molecular Dynamics Simulations in Conjunction with Multiscale Shock Technique.

Abstract:Molecular dynamics simulations in conjunction with multiscale shock technique (MSST) are performed to study the initial chemical processes and the anisotropy of shock sensitivity of the condensed-phase HMX under shock loadings applied along the a, b, and c lattice vectors. A self-consistent charge density-functional tight-binding (SCC-DFTB) method was employed. Our results show that there is a difference between lattice vector a (or c) and lattice vector b in the response to a shock wave velocity of 11 km/s, which is investigated through reaction temperature and relative sliding rate between adjacent slipping planes. The response along lattice vectors a and c are similar to each other, whose reaction temperature is up to 7000 K, but quite different along lattice vector b, whose reaction temperature is only up to 4000 K. When compared with shock wave propagation along the lattice vectors a (18 Å/ps) and c (21 Å/ps), the relative sliding rate between adjacent slipping planes along lattice vector b is only 0.2 Å/ps. Thus, the small relative sliding rate between adjacent slipping planes results in the temperature and energy under shock loading increasing at a slower rate, which is the main reason leading to less sensitivity under shock wave compression along lattice vector b. In addition, the C-H bond dissociation is the primary pathway for HMX decomposition in early stages under high shock loading from various directions. Compared with the observation for shock velocities V(imp) = 10 and 11 km/s, the homolytic cleavage of N-NO2 bond was obviously suppressed with increasing pressure.

Abstract:The combustion, detonation, and explosion chemistry of energetic materials is regulated by the formation and decay of critical intermediates that are generated during the process. In this study, the pyrolysis mechanism of a commonly used cyclic nitramine explosive called octahydro-1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5,7-tetrazocine, also known as HMX or octogen, has been investigated by performing ab initio based RRKM/master equation analysis coupled with kinetic modeling simulations. The potential energy profiles of reaction network were constructed at the DLPNO-CCSD(T)/cc-pV[T,Q]Z level based on B3LYPD3/6-311+G(d,p) optimized geometries. The master equation calculations and kinetic modeling simulations indicated that the N-NO 2 bond fission, leading to the formation of HMXR (the radical formed after NO 2 loss) and nitro radicals, is the most important channel during the initial decomposition of HMX. The C-N and C-H β-scissions play an important role in the subsequent decomposition of the HMXR radical, with the C-H β-scission to form INT249 being the more favored consumption channel. Furthermore, this study also provided a preliminary exploration into the contribution of bimolecular reactions between HMX and H/OH/NO/NO 2 radicals. The kinetic simulation results demonstrated that decomposition through these bimolecular reactions is of negligible importance under the investigated conditions.

Abstract:The structural, vibrational and electronic properties of -octahydro-1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5,7-tetrazocine (-HMX) crystal under high pressure up to 40 GPa have been studied using density functional theory (DFT). The pressure dependences on the cell volume, lattice constants, and molecular geometry of solid -HMX are presented and discussed. It is found that the N-N bonds are significantly reduced under compression, which may be of importance for initial decomposition. Based on the optimized crystal structures, the vibrational frequencies for the internal and lattice modes of the -HMX crystal at ambient and high pressures are computed, and the pressure-induced frequency shifts of these modes are discussed.

Abstract:The structural, vibrational and thermodynamic properties of -octahydro-1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5,7-tetrazocine (-HMX) crystal have been studied using the isothermal-isobaric molecular dynamics (NPT-MD) simulations. The variations of cell volume, lattice constants and molecular geometry of solid -HMX are presented and discussed at different pressure and temperature. It was found that the N-N bond is significantly lengthened with increasing temperature, which suggests that it is relevant to the initial decomposition. An abrupt change at 27 Gpa for the volume and internal geometrical parameters was observed. This is in good accord with the experimental observation that there is a phase transition at 27 GPa, which is clearly due to conformational change, not chemical reaction. The vibrational frequencies at ambient conditions agree well with experimental results, and the pressure/temperature-induced frequency shifts of these modes are discussed. Frequency discontinuity was also observed at pressure when the phase transition occurred. The Gruneisen parameter was obtained using the vibrational frequency.
Carbon cluster formation during thermal decomposition of octahydro-1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5,7-tetrazocine and 1,3,5-triamino-2,4,6-trinitrobenzene high explosives from ReaxFF reactive molecular dynamics simulations

Abstract:We report molecular dynamics (MD) simulations using the first-principles-based ReaxFF reactive force field to study the thermal decomposition of 1,3,5-triamino-2,4,6-trinitrobenzene (TATB) and octahydro-1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5,7-tetrazocine (HMX) at various densities and temperatures. TATB is known to produce a large amount (15-30%) of high-molecular-weight carbon clusters, whereas detonation of nitramines such as HMX and RDX (1,3,5-trinitroperhydro-1,3,5-triazine) generate predominantly low-molecular-weight products. In agreement with experimental observation, these simulations predict that TATB decomposition quickly (by 30 ps) initiates the formation of large carbonaceous clusters (more than 4000 amu, or approximately 15-30% of the total system mass), and HMX decomposition leads almost exclusively to small-molecule products. We find that HMX decomposes readily on this time scale at lower temperatures, for which the decomposition rate of TATB is about an order of magnitude slower. Analyzing the ReaxFF MD results leads to the detailed atomistic structure of this carbon-rich phase of TATB and allows characterization of the kinetics and chemistry related to this phase and their dependence on system density and temperature. The carbon-rich phase formed from TATB contains mainly polyaromatic rings with large oxygen content, leading to graphitic regions. We use these results to describe the initial reaction steps of thermal decomposition of HMX and TATB in terms of the rates for forming primary and secondary products, allowing comparison to experimentally derived models. These studies show that MD using the ReaxFF reactive force field provides detailed atomistic information that explains such macroscopic observations as the dramatic difference in carbon cluster formation between TATB and HMX. This shows that ReaxFF MD captures the fundamental differences in the mechanisms of such systems and illustrates how the ReaxFF may be applied to model complex chemical phenomena in energetic materials. The studies here illustrate this for modestly sized systems and modest periods; however, ReaxFF calculations of reactive processes have already been reported on systems with approximately 10(6) atoms. Thus, with suitable computational facilities, one can study the atomistic level chemical processes in complex systems under extreme conditions.

Abstract:The shock response has a great influence on the design, synthesis, and application of energetic materials in both industrial and military areas. Therefore, the initial decomposition mechanism of bond scission at the atomistic level of condensed-phase α-RDX under shock loading has been studied based on quantum molecular dynamics simulations in combination with a multi-scale shock technique. First, based on the frontier molecular orbital theory, our calculated result shows that the N-NO2 bond is the weakest bond in the α-RDX molecule in the ground state, which may be the initial bond for pyrolysis. Second, the changes of bonds under shock loading are investigated by the changes of structures, kinetic bond lengths, and Laplacian bond orders during the simulation. Also, the variation of thermodynamic properties with time in shocked α-RDX at 10 km/s along the lattice vector a for a timescale of up to 3.5 ps is presented. Abstract:The structure, cell volume and lattice constants of beta-octahydro-1,3,5,7-tetranitro1,3,5,7- tetrazocine (beta-HMX) crystal are studied by using the classical molecular dynamics method. The variations of cell volume and lattice constants are presented and discussed under different pressures and temperatures. The main purpose of the present work is to understand effect of different force fields, the CVFF and PCFF force fields were used instead of usual COMPASS. It is found that the cell volume is less satisfactory, and there was an abrupt change at 370 K and 440 K for the lattice constants and cell volume with CVFF force field. However, for PCFF force field, an abrupt change occurred at 360 K and 430 K, respectively. It means that beta-HMX may have phase transitions at these temperatures in accordance with experimental observation. It is suggested that selection of suitable force field play an important role in achieving desired accuracy of simulation results.

Abstract:The thermal decomposition process of octahydro-1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5,7-tetrazocine/hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene (HMX/HTPB) hybrid explosives and pure HMX explosives at different temperatures (2000 ~ 3500 K) was investigated using the reactive molecular dynamics method. This study aimed to analyze the effect of binders on the thermal decomposition of HMX at the atomic scale and reveal the thermal decomposition mechanism of HMX/HTPB. The results showed that the thermal decomposition process of the HMX molecule in the HMX/HTPB hybrid system involves a continuous denitration followed by the disintegration of the main ring. The HTPB chain will experience dehydrogenation, dehydroxylation, and chain fragmentation. Including HTPB in the hybrid system significantly increased the presence of H and OH radicals. These radicals then interacted with HMX and its decomposition products and produced more of the final products H 2 O and H 2 in the HMX/HTPB hybrid system compared to pure HMX. Additionally, it was observed that the HTPB chain fragments attached to the HMX decomposition products prevented the formation of N 2 and CO 2 . Furthermore, the activation energies ( Ea ) of the initial and intermediate decomposition stages of the HMX/HTPB hybrid system were 98.45 kJ mol −1 and 90.69 kJ mol −1 , respectively. The results showed that the activation energies of the HMX/HTPB hybrid system are lower than the pure HMX system in these two stages. Consequently, HTPB will enhance HMX's thermal decomposition and decreased the system's insensitivity to heat stimuli.

Abstract:Under the ReaxFF/lg force field, the multiscale shock technique (MSST) was employed to investigate the decomposition behavior of perfect, dislocated, and twinned octahydro-1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5,7-tetrazocine (HMX) at a velocity of 11 km/s. This study aimed to analyze the changes in system temperature, bond formation and breaking, variations in the number of small molecules, and the number of clusters. The results indicated that the sensitivity of dislocated HMX was the lowest, while the sensitivity of twinned and perfect HMX was comparable. Comparing the formation and breaking of bonds in HMX during the shock process, it was found that the change in the number of bonds in dislocated HMX was similar to that in perfect HMX, whereas twinning accelerated the breaking of bonds. By analyzing the changes in small molecular fragments (CO, CO 2 , H, H 2 , H 2 O, N 2 , N 2 H, NH 2 , NO, NO 2 , and O) during the shock process of HMX, it was found that dislocation had a relatively minor effect on the small molecular fragments, while twinning promoted the generation of CO, H, NO, and O and accelerated the decomposition of NO. A comparison of the number, weight, and atomic ratio of clusters under perfect, dislocated, and twinned conditions revealed that under the influence of shock, the number of clusters initially increased sharply and then decreased slowly. Meanwhile, compared to the perfect and dislocated explosives, the number of clusters under the twinned structure was significantly fewer, indicating that the twinned structure could reduce cluster formation. The proportion of oxygen to carbon in the twinned HMX was lower than that in the perfect and dislocated explosives, possibly due to the higher content of small molecular fragment O in twinned HMX.

Abstract:ReaxFF molecular dynamics (ReaxFF MD) simulations were performed to study the thermal decomposition property of cyclotrimethylenetrinitramine (RDX)-based composite modified double base (CMDB) propellants. The intermediate products and final products of the decomposition of RDX-based CMDB propellants at 2000 K, 2500 K, and 3000 K are obtained. The simulation results show that the decomposition of RDX and RDX/HTPB/Al is primary triggered by N-NO 2 rupture, and then, the intermedia products undergo a series of complex interactions to form final products. The final products of RDX/HTPB/Al are H 2 and N 2 , while the final products of pure RDX are H 2 , N 2 , and H 2 O. In addition, the abundance of the main intermediate products generated by RDX/HTPB/Al is lower than that of RDX, in that the reaction between intermediate products is more complex for RDX/HTPB/Al. Moreover, the decomposition rate of RDX/HTPB/Al increases with the increasing temperature.

Abstract:Based on the reactive molecular dynamics, the whole process of thermolysis of HMX/Poly-NIMMO-based PBX was studied in detail at the micro scale, which provided a novel atomic insight into the thermolysis mechanism of HMX/Poly-NIMMO. Further, it was compared with the HMX single substance system to explore the influence of binder on thermolysis of HMX. According to the findings, the activation energy required by pyrolysis of HMX in the mixed system is much less than that required by the pure HMX system at both phases. From the point of view of reaction energy, poly-NIMMO promoted the thermolysis of HMX. Especially, the mechanism analysis confirmed this point. The nitro and hydroxyl groups detached from Poly-NIMMO will react with HMX, and the generated HNO2 will further accelerate the decomposition process of nitrogen heterocycles. In addition, the number of the final products H2O and H2 in the two-component system increased greatly, but the number of CO2 and N2 molecules had not changed much, and C clusters were formed in the system. The evolution trend of bond number further verified the above analysis. While the maximum cluster number does drop with increasing temperature at first, after a particular temperature threshold is reached, it remains unchanged. In a nutshell, poly-NIMMO will hasten HMX's thermolysis and reduce the system's stability when subjected to heat.

Abstract:Despite extensive efforts on studying the decomposition mechanism of HMX under extreme condition, an intrinsic understanding of mechanical and chemical response processes, inducing the initial chemical reaction, is not yet achieved. In this work, the microscopic dynamic response and initial decomposition of β-HMX with (1 0 0) surface and molecular vacancy under shock condition, were explored by means of the self-consistent-charge density-functional tight-binding method (SCC-DFTB) in conjunction with multiscale shock technique (MSST). The evolutions of various bond lengths and charge transfers were analyzed to explore and understand the initial reaction mechanism of HMX. Our results discovered that the C-N bond close to major axes had less compression sensitivity and higher stretch activity. The charge was transferred mainly from the N-NO2 group along the minor axes and H atom to C atom during the early compression process. The first reaction of HMX primarily initiated with the fission of the molecular ring at the site of the C-N bond close to major axes. Further breaking of the molecular ring enhanced intermolecular interactions and promoted the cleavage of C-H and N-NO2 bonds. More significantly, the dynamic response behavior clearly depended on the angle between chemical bond and shock direction.
Temperature and pressure effect on the HMX/Graphene mixture system thermal decomposition via ReaxFF molecular dynamic simulation

Abstract:Abstract Study the detail mechanisms of energetic materials thermal decomposition process at high temperature, is helpful to understand the detail reaction information and mechanism, which are foundation for understanding reactivity of energetic materials, design of mixed explosives and safety. In this work, new model and method effect of temperature and pressure for graphene (Gr) based HMX crystal were determined by ReaxFF molecular dynamic simulation. The thermal decomposition process, HMX molecules absorption on Gr surface of perfect HMX crystal, different direction crystal planes and HMX/Gr mixed models were studied at high temperature and pressure. The different configurations of HMX molecules adsorbed on graphene surface in the mixed system were confirmed by theoretical calculation method. We observed 3, 5 and 3 HMX configurations absorption on the graphene in the (001)/Gr, (010)/Gr and (100)/Gr range from normal pressure to 31 GPa, respectively. The time-dependent curves of fragments evolution, intermediates and pyrolysis products were analyzed. The results show that the rate constants of HMX molecules during thermal decomposition process can be significantly affect by adding graphene with HMX crystal. Gr is the most obvious inhibition effect on the thermal decomposition reaction of (010) surface of HMX/Gr, which indicates that graphene has a coupling between the temperature and thermal anisotropy effect, because of the NO 2 functional groups steric hindrance and the interaction between graphene and HMX molecules. Gr also affects the initial reaction pathways of homolytic cleavage of N-NO 2 bond forming nitro radical and HONO through the C=O, C-OH and C-OC bonds formation on graphene surface.

Abstract:Molecular simulations of high energetic materials (HEMs) are limited by efficiency and accuracy. Recently, neural network potential (NNP) models have achieved molecular simulations of millions of atoms while maintaining the accuracy of density functional theory (DFT) levels. Herein, an NNP model covering typical HEMs containing C, H, N, and O elements is developed. The mechanical and decomposition properties of 1,3,5-trinitroperhydro-1,3,5-triazine (RDX), hexahydro-1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazine (HMX), and 2,4,6,8,10,12-hexanitrohexaazaisowurtzitane (CL-20) are determined by employing the molecular dynamics (MD) simulations based on the NNP model. The calculated results show that the mechanical properties of α-RDX, β-HMX, and ε-CL-20 agree with previous experiments and theoretical results, including cell parameters, equations of state, and elastic constants. In the thermal decomposition simulations, it is also found that the initial decomposition reactions of the three crystals are N-NO2 homolysis, corresponding radical intermediates formation, and NO2-induced reactions. This decomposition trajectory is mainly divided into two stages separating from the peak of NO2: pyrolysis and oxidation. Overall, the NNP model for C/H/N/O elements in this work is an alternative reactive force field for RDX, HMX, and CL-20 HEMs, and it opens up new potential for future kinetic study of nitramine explosives.

Detailed high temperature pyrolysis mechanisms of stabilized hybrid HMX crystals by intercalation of 2D energetic polymer

Abstract:The two-dimensional high nitrogen insensitive triaminoguanidine glyoxal energetic polymer (TAGP) has been used as intercalating material for HMX crystals, resulting in novel hybrid energetic crystals (so called qy-HMX) with better stability and higher density. In this paper, the molecular dynamic simulations based on a reactive force field (ReaxFF) have been implemented to illustrate the stabilization and decomposition mechanisms of TAGP on HMX crystals, which were verified by TG-DSC and Pyro-GC/MS experiments. Six types of qy-HMX models with different TAGP contents have been constructed. The results suggest that the conformation of HMX molecule could be changed under the strong constraint of TAGP layers, which could hinder the decomposition of qy-HMX under lower temperature due to enhanced intramolecular interactions, resulting in more complete solid-state decomposition reactions than β-HMX. The TAGP and HMX would decompose simultaneously if the TAGP content is low enough, whereas the TAGP decomposes earlier than HMX molecules, if its mass content reaches over 50%. The isothermal decomposition activation energies also prove that the qy-HMX crystal is more stable and decomposes faster that raw β-HMX. Besides, the Pyro-GC/MS experiments show that there is little change for the major decomposition pathways for HMX under the effect of TAGP, but there has been strong interaction between the intermediate of their thermolysis products. The gaseous products differ only in relative content, depending on the pyrolysis temperature. Some products such as the HCN, H2O and NH3 are more dominant under temperature of 350 °C, whereas the CO2, HNO and NO2, are much less than β-HMX. which agree well with the simulated results.

Abstract:A molecular dynamics (MD) simulation was carried out to characterize the dynamic evolution of void defects in crystalline octahydro-1, 3, 5, 7-tetranitro-1, 3, 5, 7-tetrazocine (HMX). Different models were constructed with the same concentration of vacancies (10 %) to discuss the size effects of void. Energetic ground state properties were determined by annealing simulations. The void formation energy per molecule removed was found to be 55–63 kcal/mol−1, and the average binding energy per molecule was between 32 and 34 kcal/mol−1 according to the change in void size. Voids with larger size had lower formation energy. Local binding energies for molecules directly on the void surface decreased greatly compared to those in defect-free lattice, and then gradually increased until the distance away from the void surface was around 10 Å. Analysis of 1 ns MD simulations revealed that the larger the void size, the easier is void collapse. Mean square displacements (MSDs) showed that HMX molecules that had collapsed into void present liquid structure characteristics. Four unique low-energy conformers were found for HMX molecules in void: two whose conformational geometries corresponded closely to those found in HMX polymorphs and two, additional, lower energy conformers that were not seen in the crystalline phases. The ratio of different conformers changed with the simulated temperature, in that the ratio of α conformer increased with the increase in temperature.
