Abstract:We prove normal distribution laws for primes of bad semistable reduction in families of curves. As a consequence, we deduce that when ordered by height, $100\%$ of curves in these families have, in a precise sense, many such primes.

Abstract:Abstract In this paper, we introduce a new problem called the Isogenous Embedding Problem (IEP) and relate the existence of solutions to this problem to the primes of bad reduction of complex multiplication curves of genus 3. More precisely, the absence of solutions to IEP implies potentially good reduction. We propose an algorithm for computing the solutions to the IEP and run the algorithm through different families of curves. Using this algorithm, we were able to prove the reduction type of some particular curves at certain primes that were open cases in R. Lercier, Q. Liu, E. Lorenzo García and C. Ritzenthaler, Reduction type of smooth plane quartics, Algebra Number Theory 15 no. 6 2021, 1429–1468.

The Density of Borromean Primes

Abstract:In this paper, we study an asymptotic distribution of sets of primes satisfying certain "linking conditions" in arithmetic topology, namely, conditions given by the Legendre and Rédei symbols among sets of primes. As our Main Theorem, we prove an asymptotic density formula for Borromean primes among all primes. For the proof, we use the effective Chebotarev density formula under the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis and explicit computations of discriminants of the number fields involved in Rédei's extension.

Abstract:We generalize the notion of Elkies primes for elliptic curves to the setting of abelian varieties with real multiplication (RM), and prove the following. Let $A$ be an abelian variety with RM over a number field whose attached Galois representation has large image. Then the number of Elkies primes (in a suitable range) for reductions of $A$ modulo primes converges weakly to a Gaussian distribution around its expected value. This refines and generalizes results obtained by Shparlinski and Sutherland in the case of non-CM elliptic curves, and has implications for the complexity of the SEA point counting algorithm for abelian surfaces over finite fields.

Abstract:We prove asymptotic normality of the distributions defined by q-supernomials, which implies asymptotic normality of the distributions given by the central string functions and the basic specialization of fusion modules of the current algebra of sl2. The limit is taken over linearly scaled fusion powers of a fixed collection of irreducible representations. This includes as special instances all Demazure modules of the affine Kac-Moody algebra associated to sl2. Along with an available complementary result on the asymptotic normality of the basic specialization of graded tensors of the type A standard representation, our result is a central limit theorem for a serious class of graded tensors. It therefore serves as an indication towards universal behavior: The central string functions and the basic specialization of fusion and, in particular, Demazure modules behave asymptotically normal, as the number of fusions scale linearly in an asymptotic parameter, N say.

Ordinary primes in Hilbert modular varieties

Abstract:A well-known conjecture, often attributed to Serre, asserts that any motive over any number field has infinitely many ordinary reductions (in the sense that the Newton polygon coincides with the Hodge polygon). In the case of Hilbert modular cuspforms $f$ of parallel weight $(2, \cdots , 2)$, we show how to produce more ordinary primes by using the Sato-Tate equidistribution and combining it with the Galois theory of the Hecke field. Under the assumption of stronger forms of Sato-Tate equidistribution, we get stronger (but conditional) results. In the case of higher weights, we formulate the ordinariness conjecture for submotives of the intersection cohomology of proper algebraic varieties with motivic coefficients, and verify it for the motives whose $l$-adic Galois realisations are abelian on a finite index subgroup. We get some results for Hilbert cuspforms of weight $(3, \cdots , 3)$, weaker than those for $(2, \cdots , 2)$.

Abstract:We determine the density of curves having squarefree discriminant in some families of curves that arise from Vinberg representations, showing that the global density is the product of the local densities. We do so using the framework of Thorne and Laga's PhD theses and Bhargava's orbit-counting techniques. This paper generalises a previous result by Bhargava, Shankar and Wang. As an application, we give an asymptotic for the number of reducible orbits of our representations.

Abstract:We study the distribution of consecutive sums of two squares in arithmetic progressions. We show that for any odd squarefree modulus $q$, any two reduced congruence classes $a_1$ and $a_2$ mod $q$, and any $r_1,r_2 \ge 1$, a positive density of sums of two squares begin a chain of $r_1$ consecutive sums of two squares, all of which are $a_1$ mod $q$, followed immediately by a chain of $r_2$ consecutive sums of two squares, all of which are $a_2$ mod $q$. This is an analog of the result of Maynard for the sequence of primes, showing that for any reduced congruence class $a$ mod $q$ and for any $r \ge 1$, a positive density of primes begin a sequence of $r$ consecutive primes, all of which are $a$ mod $q$.

On the frequency of primes preserving dynamical irreducibility of polynomials

Abstract:Towards a well-known open question in arithmetic dynamics, L. Mérai, A. Ostafe and I. E. Shparlinski (2023), have shown, for a class of polynomials $f \in \mathbb Z[X]$, which in particular includes all quadratic polynomials, that, under some natural conditions (necessary for quadratic polynomials), the set of primes $p$, such that all iterations of $f$ are irreducible modulo $p$, is of relative density zero, with an explicit estimate on the rate of decay. This result relies on some bounds on character sums via the Brun sieve. Here we use the Selberg sieve and in some cases obtain a substantial quantitative improvement.

Abstract:Radziwill and Soundararajan unveiled a connection between low-lying zeros and central values of $L$-functions, which they instantiated in the case of quadratic twists of an elliptic curve. This paper addresses the case of the family of modular forms in the level aspect, and proves that the logarithms of central values of associated L-functions approximately distribute along a normal law with mean -(1/2)log log c(f) and variance log log c(f), where c(f) is the analytic conductor of f, as predicted by the Keating-Snaith conjecture.

Abstract:Let $A/K$ be an absolutely simple abelian surface defined over a number field $K$. We give unconditional upper bounds for the number of prime ideals $\mathfrak{p}$ of $K$ with norm up to $x$ such that $A$ has supersingular reduction at $\mathfrak{p}$ when $A$ has a trivial endomorphism ring, real multiplication, and quaternion multiplication, respectively. Particularly, in the real multiplication case and when $K=\mathbb{Q}$, the bound is related to an upper bound for the distribution of Frobenius traces of $A$. Also in the real multiplication case, we provide unconditional upper bounds for a variant of the problem, which concerns the number of prime ideals for which the reduction of $A$ at the prime has a particular Newton datum and is not simple.

Joint distribution in residue classes of families of polynomially-defined additive functions

Abstract:Let $g_1, \dots , g_M$ be additive functions for which there exist nonconstant polynomials $G_1, \dots , G_M$ satisfying $g_i(p) = G_i(p)$ for all primes $p$ and all $i \in \{1, \dots , M\}$. Under fairly general and nearly optimal hypotheses, we show that the functions $g_1, \dots , g_M$ are jointly equidistributed among the residue classes to moduli $q$ varying uniformly up to a fixed but arbitrary power of $\log x$. Thus, we obtain analogues of the Siegel-Walfisz Theorem for primes in arithmetic progressions, but with primes replaced by values of such additive functions. Our results partially extend work of Delange from fixed moduli to varying moduli, and also generalize recent work done for a single additive function.

The distribution of $a$-numbers of hyperelliptic curves in characteristic three

Abstract:In this paper we present a new approach to counting the proportion of hyperelliptic curves of genus $g$ defined over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ with a given $a$-number. In characteristic three this method gives exact probabilities for curves of the form $Y^2=f(X)$ with $f(X)\in\mathbb{F}_q[X]$ monic and cubefree, probabilities that match the data presented by Cais et al. in previous work. These results are sufficient to derive precise estimates (in terms of $q$) for these probabilities when restricting to squarefree $f$. As a consequence, for positive integers $a$ and $g$ we show that the nonempty strata of the moduli space of hyperelliptic curves of genus $g$ consisting of those curves with $a$-number $a$ are of codimension $2a-1$. This contrasts with the analogous result for the moduli space of abelian varieties in which the codimensions of the strata are $a(a+1)/2$. Finally, our results allow for an alternative heuristic conjecture to that of Cais et al.; one that matches the available data.

Conditional lower bounds on the distribution of central values in families of $L$-functions

Abstract:We establish a general principle that any lower bound on the non-vanishing of central $L$-values obtained through studying the one-level density of low-lying zeros can be refined to show that most such $L$-values have the typical size conjectured by Keating and Snaith. We illustrate this technique in the case of quadratic twists of a given elliptic curve, and similar results would hold for the many examples studied by Iwaniec, Luo, and Sarnak in their pioneering work on $1$-level densities.

Abstract:We prove analogues of the Green-Tao-Ziegler theorem on linear constellations in primes, in which the primes under consideration are restricted by certain arithmetic conditions. Our first main result is conditional upon Hooley's Riemann hypothesis and imposes the extra condition that the primes have prescribed primitive roots. Our second main result is unconditional and imposes the extra condition that the primes have prescribed Artin symbols in given Galois number fields. In the appendix we present an application of the second result in inverse Galois theory.

On the prime Selmer ranks of cyclic prime twist families of elliptic curves over global function fields

Abstract:Fix a prime number $p$. Let $\mathbb{F}_q$ be a finite field of characteristic coprime to 2, 3, and $p$, which also contains the primitive $p$-th root of unity $\mu_p$. Based on the works by Swinnerton-Dyer and Klagsbrun, Mazur, and Rubin, we prove that the probability distribution of the sizes of prime Selmer groups over a family of cyclic prime twists of non-isotrivial elliptic curves over $\mathbb{F}_q(t)$ satisfying a number of mild constraints conforms to the distribution conjectured by Bhargava, Kane, Lenstra, Poonen, and Rains with explicit error bounds. The key tools used in proving these results are the Riemann hypothesis over global function fields, the Erdös-Kac theorem, and the geometric ergodicity of Markov chains.

Abstract:We prove quantitative versions of Borel and Harish-Chandra's theorems on reduction theory for arithmetic groups. Firstly, we obtain polynomial bounds on the lengths of reduced integral vectors in any rational representation of a reductive group. Secondly, we obtain polynomial bounds in the construction of fundamental sets for arithmetic subgroups of reductive groups, as the latter vary in a real conjugacy class of subgroups of a fixed reductive group. Our results allow us to apply the Pila--Zannier strategy to the Zilber--Pink conjecture for the moduli space of principally polarised abelian surfaces. Building on our previous paper, we prove this conjecture under a Galois orbits hypothesis. Finally, we establish the Galois orbits hypothesis for points corresponding to abelian surfaces with quaternionic multiplication, under certain geometric conditions.
