Abstract:Female participation in academic life has increased progressively in the last five decades, but gender discrepancy is still a concern in the advancement of academic careers. 1 In Europe, women represent nearly half of the graduates and more than 40% of the academic staff, but only 26.2% of them reach higher ranks. 2 The European Society of Cardiology (ESC) initiated sex-and-gender-related policies in 2021 to emphasize the inadequacy of women's representation in its constituent bodies including in cardiovascular journals. 3 With the intention of increasing the number of female editors, the report suggested a 40/60 quota should be applied to the appointment of future editorial boards of ESC journals.
