Abstract:The recalcitrant structure of sugarcane bagasse has long been a significant obstacle impeded the efficient extraction of hemicellulose, thus hampering the comprehensive value-added utilization of sugarcane bagasse. In this study, hemicellulose extraction from sugarcane bagasse was enhanced through a two-step microwave treatment, i.e., microwave expansion pretreatment (MEP) followed by microwave-assisted alkali extraction (MAAE). The impact of the combined MEP-MAAE process on the dissolution and diffusion of hemicelluloses from bagasse were investigated through comprehensive morphological characterization and developing mathematical models. Results revealed that MEP effectively disrupted the bagasse cell wall and reduced shielding effect, resulting in a 57% increase in the specific surface area and average pore diameter, thereby loosening the bagasse structure. Subsequently, MAAE was applied to the MEP-processed bagasse to extract hemicellulose, whereby reduced extraction time and increased hemicellulose diffusion coefficient were achieved. The extraction rate and the extraction rate constant of hemicellulose increased by 10% and 27%, respectively. Overall, the MEP process opens the cell wall pores, which facilitates the dissolution and diffusion of hemicellulose during MAAE process, hence improves the hemicellulose extraction efficiency. The combination of MEP with MAAE represents a promising strategy for effective extraction of hemicellulose and holds prospective industrial applications.
