Abstract:The conversion of biomass to functional hydrochar based catalysts for sustainable biorefinery application is critical but still challenging. In this study, mild hydrothermal treatment combined with limited oxygen calcination was developed to treat corn stover and model components for directional preparation of hydrochar based catalysts. The prepared catalysts with various Al active species, exhibited high specific surface area, hierarchical pores, cross-linked carbon microspheres, and excellent catalytic and recycling performances for glucose isomerization. After optimization, a fructose yield of 35.1% (selectivity 77.4%) was obtained at 160 degrees C for 20 min and it was still more than 25% after the fourth recycling. The reaction kinetics for glucose isomerization was studied. This study established the physicochemical properties performance relationships of hydrochar based catalysts. The optimized hydrothermal and calcination steps were crucial to improving performance by regulating the active sites and catalyst structures. Moreover, nitrogen, silicon and other elements coupled together could form functional compounds, which is vital for improving the catalytic performance by the synergy between support and Al active center. Three components in corn stover played distinct roles in the catalysis step. This study provides a novel way for developing efficient and recyclable catalysts from biomass, which could be applied in biorefining. (C) 2022 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
Pretreatment of Corn Stover for Sugar Production with Switchgrass-Derived Black Liquor

Abstract:To improve the cost-effectiveness of biomass-to-sugar conversion, sodium hydroxide (NaOH) pretreatment of switchgrass was carried out at 21°C using previously determined optimum conditions (2% NaOH (w/v), 6h), and the spent alkaline liquid (black liquor) was collected and used for pretreatment of corn stover, a feedstock exhibiting a higher susceptibility to NaOH attack, for improved enzymatic hydrolysis at a reduced cost. The results showed that, because of the high pH and the appreciable amount of carbohydrates in the black liquor, sugar production during enzymatic hydrolysis of corn stover pretreated with black liquor was comparable to that of biomass pretreated with 1% NaOH. After black liquor pretreatment at the best residence time (24h), the total reducing sugar, glucose, and xylose yields of corn stover reached 478.5, 287.7, and 145.3mg/g raw biomass, respectively, indicating the viability of this novel pretreatment technology.

Abstract:One-step fractionation with concentrated formic acid at elevated temperatures with short retention time was investigated for corn stover valorization. Crude pulp (CP) with high purity of cellulose and FA-lignin (FAL) with high guaiacyl content were fractionated through one-step mild pretreatment. Formylation reaction on both CP and FAL fractions occurred during the pretreatment and improved the hydrophobicity and thermal stability of CPs and FALs. The presence of formyl group on CPs significantly inhibited the enzymatic hydrolysis efficiency for sugar production, however, the formylated cellulose showed super high reactivity and selectivity for HMF production through catalysis by maleic acid and aluminum chloride in acetonitrile-water co-solvent system. In addition, the fractionated FAL fraction exhibited a loose structure which is prominent for its further catalytic conversion into chemicals and energy.

Abstract:Three corn stover hydrolysates, enzymatic hydrolysates prepared from acid and alkaline pretreatments separately and hemicellulosic hydrolysate prepared from acid pretreatment, were evaluated in composition and fermentability. For enzymatic hydrolysate from alkaline pretreatment, ethanol yield on fermentable sugars and fermentation efficiency reached highest among the three hydrolysates; meanwhile, ethanol yield on dry corn stover reached 0.175g/g, higher than the sum of those of two hydrolysates from acid pretreatment. Fermentation process of the enzymatic hydrolysate from alkaline pretreatment was further investigated using free and immobilized cells of recombinant Saccharomyces cerevisiae ZU-10. Concentrated hydrolysate containing 66.9g/L glucose and 32.1g/L xylose was utilized. In the fermentation with free cells, 41.2g/L ethanol was obtained within 72h with an ethanol yield on fermentable sugars of 0.416g/g. Immobilized cells greatly enhanced the ethanol productivity, while the ethanol yield on fermentable sugars of 0.411g/g could still be reached. Repeated batch fermentation with immobilized cells was further attempted up to six batches. The ethanol yield on fermentable sugars maintained above 0.403g/g with all glucose and more than 92.83% xylose utilized in each batch. These results demonstrate the feasibility and efficiency of ethanol production from corn stover hydrolysates.
Concentrated HCl Catalyzed 5-(Chloromethyl)furfural Production from Corn Stover of Varying Particle Sizes

Abstract:5-(Chloromethyl) Furfural (CMF) is a potential chemical building block for replacing petroleum-derived chemicals derived from lignocellulosic feedstocks. In this study, hand harvested corn stover and mechanically forage chopped corn stover was processed in a 1 L hydrolysis reactor to produce CMF in a biphasic, two solvent system. Both 1,2 dichloroethane (DCE) and dichloromethane (DCM) were tested as organic solvents. The results showed that DCE performed better than DCM due to temperature and pressure limitations of the reactor system. Using DCE as the extracting solvent, the effects of solids loading, particle size, and moisture content of the corn stover on the hydrolysis efficiency were determined. One liter acid hydrolysis reactor provides consistent and reproducible yields of 63% CMF from hand harvested corn stover as feedstock at solid loading of 10% wt/v, 100C for 1 h. For the forage chopped corn stover, increasing particle size brings an increase in the feedstock sugar content. Foraged chopped corn stover (FCCS) particle sizes larger than 19 mm (0.75 in.) results in significant reduction in CMF yield from 43 to 35%.
Pretreatment of Corn Stover for Enzymatic Saccharification Improvement by Using the Combination of Alkaline Reagents at Mild Temperatures

Abstract:For ethanol production from cellulosic biomass, an effective pretreatment step is required to reduce biomass recalcitrance by altering its chemical and structural features. Sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and lime (CaO) are two alkali reagents which have been extensively studied in chemical pretreatment of lignocellulosic biomass. However, high temperatures and pressures are routinely applied to effectively improve the digestibility of lignocellulose, which lead to the high cost of pretreatment. In previous studies, distinct properties of NaOH and CaO make it possible to manipulate these two alkali reagents to let them work together in lignocellulose pretreatment to reduce temperature, chemical loading, and residence time requirements. Corn Stover is considered as a potential feedstock for sugar production due to its great amount and easy access in the United States. In this research, NaOH and CaO are used together to pretreat corn stover at 50 oC. Three pretreatment parameters are studied: residence time, NaOH concentration, and CaO loading. The pretreatments were evaluated based on the sugar productions in the subsequent enzymatic hydrolysis. At recommended pretreatment conditions (9h, 0.75% NaOH, 0.05 g CaO g-1 raw biomass), the total reducing sugar yields was 544.0 mg g-1 raw biomass, at an overall carbohydrate conversion of 77.0%. However, compared with pretreatment at recommended conditions at room temperature, pretreatment at 50 oC may result in more energy and chemical input.
Fast dissolution pretreatment of the corn stover in gamma-valerolactone promoted by ionic liquids: Selective delignification and enhanced enzymatic saccharification

Abstract:The dissolution of corn stover was investigated in gamma-valerolactone (GVL) assisted by ionic liquids. An enhanced subsequent enzymatic saccharification was reached with a total reducing sugar yield of 0.69 g.g-1 and a glucose of 0.38 g.g-1 within 24 h. The treatment effects on the physical-chemical features of corn stover in terms of the natural recalcitrance to the subsequent biological digest were systematically investigated using composition analysis, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The structures of the associated enzymatic hydrolysis lignin (EHL) and ionic liquid extracted lignin (IEL) were characterized by gel permeation chromatography (GPC), fourier transform infra-red spectroscopy (FTIR), phosphorous nuclear magnet resonance spectrometry (31P NMR), and heteronuclear single quantum coherence spectroscopy (HSQC) for an in-depth understanding of the delignification process and the basic structural information for further lignin valorization.
Cascade Hydrolysis and Fermentation of Corn Stover for Production of High Titer Gluconic and Xylonic Acids.

Abstract:Simultaneous saccharification and fermentation (SSF) is an efficient fermentation operation in lignocellulose biorefining. However, SSF may not be applicable when the pH values of hydrolysis and fermentation do not match, or the strong intermediate inhibitors on cellulase activity are generated. This study proposed a cascade hydrolysis and fermentation (CHF) process for cellulosic gluconic acid fermentation to overcome the inhibition of the intermediate glucono-γ-lactone on cellulase activity. The pretreated and detoxified corn stover feedstock was enzymatically hydrolyzed into hydrolysate slurry, then gluconic acid and xylonic acid fermentations were directly conducted by inoculating Gluconobacter oxydans strain without solid/liquid separation. The sugar loss and energy consumption were effectively avoided by moving the solid/liquid separation into the fermentation stage. The experiments and the techno-economic analysis show that the CHF is simple and cost effective fermentation operation when SSF is not applicable.
Hydrogen Peroxide-Assisted Sodium Carbonate Pretreatment for the Enhancement of Enzymatic Saccharification of Corn Stover

Abstract:In this work, the effectiveness of hydrogen peroxide-assisted sodium carbonate (HSC) pretreatment of corn stover to produce fermentable sugars was investigated. It was found that the addition of H2O2 (a green oxidative agent) in Na2CO3 pretreatment could enhance the lignin removal and increase the hydrophilicity of the residual lignin, leading to the improved enzymatic digestibility and the yield of fermentable sugars. Also, results showed that lignin removal (in the range of 12–65%) was positively and linearly correlated with final total sugar yields. Post PFI refining could further improve the enzyme accessibility by increasing porosity of substrates. After HSC pretreatment (40 wt % Na2CO3 and 15 wt % H2O2, 120 °C for 60 min) and enzymatic hydrolysis, the final total sugar yield could achieve 79%, which was about 10% higher in comparison with the conventional Na2CO3 pretreatment under the same conditions. HSC pretreatment will have less environmental impact and less barriers for large scale production.

Abstract:In this study, γ-butyrolactone/water (GBL/H 2 O) was explored as a mild, efficient, and cost-effective binary solvent pretreatment to enhance hydrolyzability of corn stover (CS). Key pretreatment parameters—reaction time, temperature, and H 2 SO 4 concentration—were systematically investigated for their effects on the physicochemical properties of CS. Specifically, increased temperature and acid concentration significantly decreased cellulose crystallinity (from 1.39 for untreated CS to 1.04 for CS pretreated by GBL/H 2 O with 100 mM H 2 SO 4 at 120 °C for 1 h) and promoted lignin removal (47.3% for CS pretreated by GBL/H 2 O with 150 mM H 2 SO 4 at 120 °C for 1 h). Acknowledging the cellulase's limited hydrolysis efficiency, a dual-enzyme scheme using a low cellulase dosage (10 FPU/g) supplemented with β-glucosidase or xylanase was tested, enhancing hydrolysis of CS pretreated under low temperature–long duration and high temperature–short duration conditions, respectively. Optimum sugar release was obtained from CS pretreated with GBL/H 2 O and 150 mM H 2 SO 4 at 120 °C for 1 h, achieving 98% glucan and 82.3% xylan conversion, compared with 53.9% and 17% of glucan and xylan conversion from untreated CS. GBL/H 2 O pretreatment outperformed other binary systems in literature, achieving the highest sugar conversions with lower enzyme loading. These results highlight the potential of GBL/H 2 O pretreatment for efficient biomass conversion, contributing to the goals of the green economy.

Abstract:This study addressed the utilization of an agro-waste, corn stover, as a renewable lignocellulosic feedstock for the fermentative H2 production by the moderate thermophile Thermoanaerobacterium thermosaccharolyticum W16. The corn stover was first hydrolyzed by cellulase with supplementation of xylanase after delignification with 2% NaOH. It produced reducing sugar at a yield of 11.2gL−1glucose, 3.4gL−1xylose and 0.5gL−1arabinose under the optimum condition of cellulase dosage 25Ug−1 substrate with supplement xylanase 30Ug−1 substrate. The hydrolyzed corn stover was sequentially introduced to fermentation by strain W16, where, the cell density and the maximum H2 production rate was comparable to that on simulated medium, which has the same concentration of reducing sugars with hydrolysate. The present results suggest a promising combined hydrogen production process from corn stover with enzymatic hydrolysis stage and fermentation stage using W16.
A One-Pot Microwave-Assisted NaCl–H2O/GVL Solvent System for Cellulose Conversion to 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural and Saccharides with in Situ Separation of the Products

Abstract:This work addresses a microwave-assisted, NaCl–H2O/γ-valerolactone (GVL) solvent system for the co-production of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) and saccharides from cellulose, examining the effects of the solvent system (H2O/GVL), NaCl concentration and reaction time. Oligosaccharides and glucose were completely recovered in the aqueous phase and their yields varied between 4–67 and 0–16 wt%, respectively, while HMF was largely recovered in the organic phase, in a yield between 0 and 13 wt%. Increasing the proportion of H2O in the system promoted cellulose depolymerisation and increased the production of oligosaccharides and glucose. This latter underwent a further decomposition to yield HMF and carboxylic acids when long times were used. An increase in NaCl not only kinetically promoted cellulose decomposition, but also modified the solubility of cellulose decomposition products in the aqueous phase, thus playing a very important role on the products distribution within both phases. With a solvent system consisting of 67/33 vol% H2O/GVL, with 30 wt% NaCl at 220 °C for 18 min, it is possible to selectively convert 76% of the cellulose into a sugar-rich aqueous solution and a rich HMF organic phase. The former was made up of glucose (25%) and oligosaccharides (64%), while the later mainly comprised HMF (75%). This might help the development of new biomass pre-processing technologies, allowing the co-production of precursors for the chemical and biological industries.

Abstract:Xylose fermentation is an essential issue for lignocellulosic ethanol production, which is often inhibited by degradation products generated during biomass pretreatment. In this study, enzymatic hydrolysate of dilute acid pretreated corn stover was fermented using Zymomonas mobilis 8b. With the solid loading of corn stover increased from 5 to 24 wt.%, the xylose consumption volume decreased from 97.0 to 21.5%. The ethanol produced ranged from 7.8 to 28.6 g/L. In order to improve xylose consumption, corn slurry was integrated into the corn stover ethanol process. Integration strategies, glucoamylase dosage, and corn–corn stover mixing ratio were investigated. Results showed that introducing corn slurry into corn stover hydrolysate was an effective way to improve xylose fermentation as well as enhance ethanol titer. Specifically, when liquefied corn slurry was introduced into corn stover hydrolysate at the ratio of 1:1 and total solid loading of 24%, the xylose consumption volume exceeded 88% with the final ethanol titer reached 68.6 g/L. This study indicates that integration of the first- and the second-generation ethanol processes is beneficial to xylose fermentation.

Abstract:A novel solid acid catalyst (SO3H-NG-C) was synthesized from biomass-derived glucosamine hydrochloride by carbonization, activation and sulfonation processes. The SO3H-NG-C was characterized by SEM, TEM, N2 adsorption-desorption, elemental analysis, XRD, FTIR, Py-IR and XPS to reveal its physical and chemical properties. The SO3H-NG-C was used as a catalyst for converting corn stover into furfural and 5-hydromethylfurfural (5-HMF) via a one-step process. The effects of reaction temperature and time, solvent types, water concentrations, corn stover concentration, catalyst loading and catalyst stability were investigated systematically. 53 % furfural yield and17 % 5-HMF yield were obtained from 200 mg corn stover at 190 °C in 80 min using 100 mg SO3H-NG-C in Ƴ-valerolactone (GVL). Moreover, the used catalyst was separated from corn stover residue via sieve, and the catalyst showed reasonable stability for corn stover conversion.

Abstract:Biogas production from lignocellulose by anaerobic digestion has made significant progress lately. However, the bioconversion of lignocellulose is still hindered by its recalcitrant and heterogeneous structure. To overcome this challenge, a novel method of super diluted mixture alkali (SDMA) pretreatment was developed to enhance the biogas production from cornstalk in high-solid anaerobic digestion. The cornstalks treated with 2 g/L NH 3 and 1 g/L NaOH achieved a cumulative methane yield of 241.50 mL/g VS, which was 184.65 % and 55.6 % higher than that of the untreated and 2 % NaOH treated cornstalks, respectively. The system stability was verified by a scale-up experiment in a 10 L bioreactor. Remarkably, the entire process does not generate any wastewater or chemical pollution. Moreover, the resultant biogas slurry could be directly applied as a concentrated bio-fertilizer. The findings are potentially beneficial for the development of the second-generation biogas industry from lignocellulosic biomass, which can provide both clean and economical bioenergy.

Abstract:An integrated corn ethanol-methane fermentation system was proposed to solve the problem of stillage handling, where thin stillage was treated by anaerobic digestion and then reused to make mash for the following ethanol fermentation. This system was evaluated at laboratory and pilot scale. Anaerobic digestion of thin stillage ran steadily with total chemical oxygen demand removal efficiency of 98% at laboratory scale and 97% at pilot scale. Ethanol production was not influenced by recycling anaerobic digestion effluent at laboratory and pilot scale. Compared with dried distillers' grains with solubles produced in conventional process, dried distillers' grains in the proposed system exhibited higher quality because of increased protein concentration and decreased salts concentration. Energetic assessment indicated that application of this novel process enhanced the net energy balance ratio from 1.26 (conventional process) to 1.76. In conclusion, the proposed system possessed technical advantage over the conventional process for corn fuel ethanol production.

It is urgent to enhance the reactivity and thermal stability of oxygen carriers (OC) and capture the inherently separated CO2. This work presents the strategy of simultaneous modification of a Fe2O3/Al2O3 oxygen carrier and the supplement of an oxidant for corn stalk chemical looping gasification by introducing KNO3-containing ethanol liquid waste. CaO is employed to capture the generated CO2 and promote the reaction balance toward hydrogen production in a fuel reactor (FR). The highest carbon conversion reaction rate of 1.1 × 10–4 mol/g could be obtained at the ratio of CaO to fuel carbon and the reaction temperature of 1.5 and 600 °C, respectively. The kinetics and thermodynamics analyses under the optimized condition are further discussed to verify the possibility and high efficiency of using alkaline organic liquid waste to boost solid fuel gasification for hydrogen production. This CLG strategy shows multifunctional merits, including organic liquid waste treatment, biomass CLG promotion, and hydrogen production enhancement.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Lignocellulosic wastes, including corn stalks and wheat straw, were pretreated and hydrolyzed with combined supercritical and subcritical hydrothermal technology. Soluble sugars were collected by pre-washing the crushed materials before hydrolysis. The effects of solid–liquid ratio, temperature, and reaction time on oligosaccharide production were investigated and the optimum supercritical conditions were found to be 20mg/2.5ml water, 384°C, 17s for corn stalks and 20mg/2.5ml water, 384°C, 19s for wheat straw. Subsequent subcritical processing of the hydrolyzate (with or without the water extract) from supercritical treatment was guided by a previous analysis of cellulose hydrolysis kinetics. The highest yield of fermentable hexoses from corn stalks (27.4% of raw material) was obtained at 280°C, 27s, and from wheat straw (6.7% of raw material) at 280°C, 54s. This study provides novel key parameters for fermentable hexose production from lignocellulosic feedstocks using combined supercritical and subcritical hydrothermal treatment.
