Abstract:Theoretical bounds are commonly used to assess the limitations of photonic design. Here we introduce a more active way to use theoretical bounds, integrating them into part of the design process and identifying optimal system parameters that maximize the efficiency limit itself. As an example, we consider wide-field-of-view high-numerical-aperture metalenses, which can be used for high-resolution imaging in microscopy and endoscopy, but no existing design has achieved a high efficiency. By choosing aperture sizes to maximize an efficiency bound, setting the thickness according to a thickness bound, and then performing inverse design, we come up with high-numerical-aperture (NA = 0.9) metalens designs with record-high 98% transmission efficiency and 92% Strehl ratio across all incident angles within a 60-deg field of view, reaching the maximized bound. This maximizing-efficiency-limit approach applies to any multi-channel system and can help a wide range of optical devices reach their highest possible performance.

Abstract:Over the past years, nanostructured metalenses with thin form factors have been extensively studied for their potential in consumer and industrial applications. Despite significant advancements, current metalenses struggle to achieve high numerical aperture (NA), manufacturable structures, broad working bandwidth, and extended depth of focus (DOF) simultaneously. This paper introduces a comprehensive inverse design framework that facilitates the rapid development of polarization-insensitive 3D metalenses, effective in both frequency and spatial domains. The framework employs shape-constrained topology optimization to define horizontal ring profiles, along with discrete particle swarm optimization to manage discretized ring heights. Two immersed silicon carbide metalenses are demonstrated to showcase this framework's capability, providing near-unity NAs for enhanced photon collection. The first design is an extended DOF metalens, exhibiting a DOF over four times the light wavelength and achieving a maximum diffraction efficiency of 23%, close to the theoretical limit. The second design achieves broadband achromaticity, suppressing chromatic aberrations across a wide 300 nm bandwidth (850-1150 nm) while maintaining an average diffraction efficiency of 10%. This methodology serves as a valuable tool for deploying functional metalenses with implications for nanophotonics, quantum optics, and quantum nanotechnology. An effective inverse design framework for polarization-insensitive 3D metalenses, optimized for frequency and spatial domains is introduced. Using shape-constrained topology optimization and discrete particle swarm optimization, silicon carbide metalenses with extended-depth-of-focus and broadband achromaticity is developed across a 300 nm bandwidth, achieving maximum diffraction efficiencies of 23% and 13.6%, respectively. Toward High‐Efficiency Ultrahigh Numerical Aperture Freeform Metalens: From Vector Diffraction Theory to Topology Optimization

Abstract:A vectorial diffraction model is established to comprehensively analyze the theoretical limit and the rapid efficiency decline of high‐NA metalens, as well as the efficiency gap for conventional metalens. Based on field similarity, topology optimization method with geometric constraints control is adopted to inversely design a high‐efficiency high‐NA freeform metalens, showing a great improvement of focusing efficiency for different NAs. Optical metasurface is a 2D array of subwavelength meta‐atoms that arbitrarily manipulates amplitude, polarization, and wavefront of incident light, offering great advantages in miniaturization and integration. However, the presuppositions hidden in conventional unit‐cell‐based design approach, including discrete phase sampling, local periodicity approximation, and normal response, imply that the responses and interactions of meta‐atoms are almost impossible to be accurately modeled, thus impeding the effective design of high‐efficiency ultrahigh numerical aperture (NA) metalens. Here, based on vector diffraction theory and plane wave expansion method, theoretical limitation of metalens efficiency is comprehensively investigated. It is identified that for high‐NA metalens, theoretical focusing efficiency is limited by diffraction capability of vector field, while evanescent wave attenuation dominates theoretical efficiency decline for ultrahigh‐NA metalens. It is also shown that the efficiency of conventional metalens has a huge gap from theoretical limitation, owing to imperfect diffractive focusing and impedance mismatch reflections. To fill such efficiency gap, the high‐efficiency high‐NA freeform metalens based on topology optimization is further demonstrated. Particularly, topology geometric constraints are utilized to reduce minimum feature size while keeping high efficiency. The results could shed new light on the understanding and design of ultrahigh‐NA metalens and find promising applications in optical imaging, microscopy, and lithography.

Abstract:Longitudinal optical field modulation is of critical importance in a wide range of applications, including optical imaging, spectroscopy, and optical manipulation. However, it remains a considerable challenge to realize a uniformly distributed light field with extended depth-of-focus. Here, a high-efficiency extended depth-of-focus metalens is proposed by adjoint-based topology-shape optimization approach, wherein the theoretical electric field intensity corresponding to a variable focal-length phase is utilized as the figure of merit. Using a dozen of metalens with random structure parameters as initial structures, the average focal depth of topology-shape optimized metalens is greatly improved up to 18.80 μm (about 29.7 λ ), which is 1.54 times higher than the diffraction-limited focal depth. Moreover, all the topology-shape optimized metalens exhibit high diffraction efficiency exceeding 0.7 over the whole focal depth range, which is approximately three times greater than that of the forward design. Our results offer a new insight into the design of extended depth-of-focus metalens and may find potential applications in imaging, holography, and optical fabrication.

Abstract:Efficient design methods for large-scale metalenses are crucial for various applications. The conventional phase-mapping method shows a weak performance under large phase gradients, thus limiting the efficiency and quality of large-scale, high-numerical-aperture metalenses. While inverse design methods can partially address this issue, existing solutions either accommodate only small-scale metalenses due to high computational demands or compromise on focusing performance. We propose an efficient large-scale design method based on an optimization approach combined with the adjoint-based method and the level-set method, which first forms a one-dimensional metalens and then extends it to two dimensions. Taking fabrication constraints into account, our optimization method for large-area metalenses with a near-unity numerical aperture (NA = 0.99) has improved the focusing efficiency from 42% to 60% in simulations compared to the conventional design method. Additionally, it has reduced the deformation of the focusing spot caused by the ultrahigh numerical aperture. This approach retains the benefits of the adjoint-based method while significantly reducing the computational burden, thereby advancing the development of large-scale metalenses design. It can also be extended to other large-scale metasurface designs.

Abstract:The ever-growing demand for miniaturized optical systems presents a significant challenge in revolutionizing their core element – the varifocal lens. Recent advancements in ultra-thin, tunable metasurface optics have introduced new approaches to achieving zoom imaging. However, current varifocal metalens have faced challenges such as low focusing efficiency, limited tunability, and complicated designs. Here, we employ the high-contrast transmit arrays (HCTA) structures to design and fabricate a polarization-independent, single-layer flexible metalens that operates at a wavelength of 940 nm. Using a uniform stretching system, we characterized its optical performance to achieve over 60 % focusing efficiency within a 0 %–25 % stretch range, while the focal length changes align with theoretical predictions. Furthermore, our research also successfully demonstrated the capacity of a metalens with a numerical aperture (NA) of 0.5 to efficiently adjust imaging magnification within a 2× range, achieving imaging results that approach the diffraction limit. This research offers promising prospects for the practical use of compact and miniaturized optoelectronic devices in fields like photography, mixed reality, microscopy, and biomedical imaging.

Abstract:High numerical aperture (NA) metalenses with large focusing efficiency are crucial for various applications in modern optics and photonics, particularly in high resolution imaging, high directivity lasing process and so on. Recent progresses have been achieved in designing high NA metalenses which can surpass conventional ones but mainly in the visible and infrared regimes by using all-dielectric metasurfaces. Here, multilayer phase gradient metallic metasurfaces sandwiched by filling dielectrics are employed to design high NA and large efficiency metalenses in the low spectrums. Benefiting from its high transmission amplitude and the full phase control to the incident waves of the proposed gradient meta-atoms with a double split ring resonator, the designed ultra-thin and small footprint four-layer metalens (5λ × 5λ × 0.23λ, λ is wavelength) demonstrates a high NA in the order of 0.8 and the large focusing efficiency around 40% according to the full-wave simulations and experimental measurements. Furthermore, the influences of the dielectric thickness and the layer number of stacked meta-atoms on the presented high NA metalens are investigated. The results reveal that the NA of proposed metalens can be surprisingly further improved from 0.8 to 0.9 by increasing dielectric thickness and/or the focusing efficiency can be enhanced to above 50% by adding the layer number of the stacked meta-atoms. These findings also imply that our high NA metalens in low spectrum can be compatible to the standard printed circuit board fabrication and also posses of good robustness to the metasurface layer number. The presented work provides new vistas to develop high NA and large efficiency metalens in low microwave or Terahertz (THz) spectrum, where the metallic metasurfaces are commonly used. Besides, it can benefit to the development of various novel metadevices such as miniaturized high-gain lens antenna, compact cloaks and many others in modern microwave engineering and/or THz optics.

Transmission efficiency limit for nonlocal metalenses

Abstract:The rapidly advancing capabilities in nanophotonic design are enabling complex functionalities limited mainly by physical bounds. The efficiency of transmission is a major consideration, but its ultimate limit remains unknown for most systems. Here, we introduce a matrix formalism that puts a fundamental bound on the channel-averaged transmission efficiency of any passive multi-channel optical system based only on energy conservation and the desired functionality, independent of the interior structure and material composition. Applying this formalism to diffraction-limited nonlocal metalenses with a wide field of view, we show that the transmission efficiency must decrease with the numerical aperture for the commonly adopted designs with equal entrance and output aperture diameters. We also show that reducing the size of the entrance aperture can raise the efficiency bound. This work reveals a fundamental limit on the transmission efficiency as well as providing guidance for the design of high-efficiency multi-channel optical systems.

Abstract:A high numerical aperture multifocal metalens was proposed based on well-designed Pancharatnam-Berry phase optical elements. Both circularly and linearly polarized incident lights could be tightly focused into diffraction-limited focal spots. Right and left circularly polarized focal spots could be realized simultaneously by illuminating a linearly polarized beam. The highest numerical aperture reached to 0.84 with full width at half-maximum of 263 nm. Moreover, we also presented a metalens whose optical elements are hybrid arranged and the metalens can realize spin-independent focusing with a numerical aperture of 0.8. The presented metalens has significant potential applications in particles manipulation and high-resolution imaging.

Abstract:Metalenses, artificially engineered subwavelength nanostructures to focus light within ultrathin thickness, promise potential for a paradigm shift of conventional optical devices. However, the aperture sizes of metalenses are usually bound within hundreds of micrometers by the commonly-used scanning-based fabrication methods, limiting their usage on practical optical devices like telescopes. Here, for the first time, we demonstrate a high-efficiency, single-lens, refractive metalens telescope. We developed a mass production-friendly workflow for fabricating wafer-scale (80-mm aperture) metalenses using deep-ultraviolet (DUV) photolithography and a multi-exposure process involving reticle rotation and pattern stitching to leverage the radial symmetry of metalenses. Our metalens works in the near-infrared region (1200 - 1600 nm) with diffraction-limited performance and a high peak focusing efficiency of 80.84% at 1450 nm experimentally. Based on the metalens, we built a single-lens telescope and acquired images of the lunar surface, revealing its geographical structures. We believe our demonstration of the metalens telescope proves the exciting potential lying in the metasurfaces and could bring new possibilities for areas involving large optical systems, including geosciences, planetary observation, and astrophysical science.

Abstract:Metalenses have gained significant attention and have been widely utilized in optical systems for focusing and imaging, owing to their lightweight, high-integration, and exceptional-flexibility capabilities. Traditional design methods neglect the coupling effect between adjacent meta-atoms, thus harming the practical performance of meta-devices. The existing physical/data-driven optimization algorithms can solve the above problems, but bring significant time costs or require a large number of data-sets. Here, we propose a physics-data-driven method employing an "intelligent optimizer" that enables us to adaptively modify the sizes of the meta-atom according to the sizes of its surrounding ones. The implementation of such a scheme effectively mitigates the undesired impact of local lattice coupling, and the proposed network model works well on thousands of data-sets with a validation loss of 3x10-3. Based on the "intelligent optimizer", a 1-cm -diameter metalens is designed within 3 hours, and the experimental results show that the 1-mm-diameter metalens has a relative focusing efficiency of 93.4% (compared to the ideal focusing efficiency) and a Strehl ratio of 0.94. Compared to previous inverse design method, our method significantly boosts designing efficiency with five orders of magnitude reduction in time. More generally, it may set a new paradigm for devising large-aperture meta-devices.
Ultrahigh Numerical Aperture Metalens at Visible Wavelengths

Abstract:Subwavelength imaging requires the use of high numerical aperture (NA) lenses together with immersion liquids in order to achieve the highest possible resolution. Following exciting recent developments in metasurfaces that have achieved efficient focusing and novel beam-shaping, the race is on to demonstrate ultrahigh-NA metalenses. The highest NA that has been demonstrated so far is NA = 1.1, achieved with a TiO2 metalens and back-immersion. Here, we introduce and demonstrate a metalens with a high NA and high transmission in the visible range, based on crystalline silicon (c-Si). The higher refractive index of silicon compared to TiO2 allows us to push the NA further. The design uses the geometric phase approach also known as the Pancharatnam-Berry (P-B) phase, and we determine the arrangement of nanobricks using a hybrid optimization algorithm (HOA). We demonstrate a metalens with NA = 0.98 in air, a bandwidth (full width at half-maximum, fwhm) of 274 nm, and a focusing efficiency of 67% at 532 nm wavelength, which is close to the transmission performance of a TiO2 metalens. Moreover, and uniquely so, our metalens can be front-immersed into immersion oil and achieve an ultrahigh NA of 1.48 experimentally and 1.73 theoretically, thereby demonstrating the highest NA of any metalens in the visible regime reported to the best of our knowledge. The fabricating process is fully compatible with microelectronic technology and therefore scalable. We envision the front-immersion design to be beneficial for achieving ultrahigh-NA metalenses as well as immersion metalens doublets, thereby pushing metasurfaces into practical applications such as high resolution, low-cost confocal microscopy and achromatic lenses.

Fabricable concentric-ring metalens with high focusing efficiency based on two-dimensional subwavelength unit splicing

Abstract:To address the challenges posed by computational resource consumption and data volume in the development of large-aperture metalenses, a design method for concentric-ring metalens based on two-dimensional unit splicing is proposed in this paper. In the method, the unit structure library is constructed through global traversal under the machining process constraints. The phase matching is performed for two polarization states with specific weights and the design of binary-height, concentric-ring structures with arbitrary polarization sensitivity is realized, whose focusing efficiency (the encircled power within 3×FWHM of the focal spot divided by the near-field outgoing power) is up to 90%. Based on this method, a polarization-insensitive metalens with a design wavelength of 10µm, diameter of 2 cm, and numerical aperture of 0.447 is obtained. The method combines the advantages of lower computation requirements for a building block array of a metalens and lower structure data for a concentric-ring metalens. Consequently, it becomes possible to reduce calculation and processing costs by several orders of magnitude during the development process of metalenses with diameters ranging from 103 to 105 wavelengths. The resulting focusing efficiency can approach the upper limit achievable through global structural optimization and significantly surpass that of binary-height Fresnel lenses.
High-efficiency and large-numerical-aperture focusing with subdiffraction resolution using a hybrid elastic metalens

Abstract:Metalenses have been widely studied and used because of their high design freedom and ultrathin configurations. For various practical applications, such as geological exploration, energy harvesting, and structural health monitoring, it is highly desirable to maximize the focusing efficiency of elastic waves. However, it is a great challenge to realize both high-efficiency focusing and subdiffraction resolution for elastic waves, especially when the mode coupling and conversion between longitudinal and transverse elastic waves is ubiquitous and inevitable. Here, we adopt a hybrid design approach for an elastic metalens to realize a high-efficiency (54.6%) and subdiffraction resolution (0.39 λ ) focusing performance with a large numerical aperture (NA = 0.931). The hybrid metalens is composed of a gradient metasurface in the central region and metagratings in the peripheral region to achieve a dramatic lensing functionality, where 112.5 times enhancement of wave intensity is attained at the focal spot. Polarization-based Metalenses with High Numerical Aperture and Focusing Efficiency Utilizing Silicon-rich Nitride

Abstract:We explore the cutting-edge application of silicon-rich nitride (SRN) in the realm of high numerical aperture (NA) metalens design, focusing on the crucial role of pitch size optimization in amplifying lens efficiency through advanced simulations. Our investigation unveils how the exceptional tunable high refractive index of SRN can be harnessed to achieve significant advancements in metalens performance. By meticulously designing and simulating two innovative SRN-based metalenses - Mk1, with an NA of 0.9, reaching an impressive 75% focusing efficiency with full width at half maximum (FWHM) of 0.53{\lambda}, and Mk2, with an NA of 0.99, achieving a 42% efficiency while maintaining an FWHM of 0.48{\lambda}. We demonstrate the critical influence of reduced pitch size on enhancing efficiency. This study not only highlights the unparalleled potential of SRN in optimizing metalens efficiency but also represents a significant leap forward in the field of nanophotonics, offering new pathways for the development of highly efficient flat photonic devices.

Abstract:Metalens with broadband and high-efficiency focusing functionality is desired in various underwater acoustic applications such as sonar and oceanography. Here we design and demonstrate a metagrating-based lens consisting of spatially sparse and wavelength-scale meta-atoms with optimized structures. With the help of grating diffraction analysis and intelligent optimization algorithm, the reflective metalens enables broadband and high-numerical-aperture focusing for waterborne sound over a 40 kHz-bandwidth for working frequency at 200 kHz. Full-wave numerical simulations unambiguously verify a sharp and high-efficiency focusing of sound wave intensity, with the full width at half maximum (FWHM) at the focal spot being smaller than 0.5λ and thus beating the Rayleigh-Abbe diffraction limit. Our work not only provides an intelligent design paradigm of high-performance metalens, but also presents a potential solution for the development of planar acoustic devices for high-resolution applications.

However, the realization of a large-aperture metalens, which is composed of billions of nanoscale building blocks, poses significant challenges for both process technology and manufacturing cost. Herein, an unconventional optical sparse-aperture (UOSA) metalens is developed with a Wiener filtering algorithm to obtain a high-quality image. The proposed UOSA metalens consists of three identical and concentric annular sectors sub-aperture metalens based on a gallium nitride nanobrick array, which can effectively focus the unpolarized visible light into the same point. An effective aperture of 0.72 mm with lower cost is realized by utilizing less than 1/2 processing area. The experimental imaging results show that this all-dielectric UOSA metalens with a diffraction-limited resolution of 11.36 mu m under 632.8 nm illumination is consistent with the simulated results. Furthermore, a relatively high focusing efficiency (approximate to 51.2%) can also be achieved under the incident light of any polarization state. The approach with less area process, time-saving, high efficiency, and large-aperture characteristics offers vast potential applications in the fields of integrated optical systems, near-eye imaging devices, and wearable optics.

Abstract:We use inverse design to discover metalens structures that exhibit broadband, achromatic focusing across low, moderate, and high numerical apertures. We show that standard unit-cell approaches cannot achieve high-efficiency high-NA focusing, even at a single frequency, due to the incompleteness of the unit-cell basis, and we provide computational upper bounds on their maximum efficiencies. At low NA, our devices exhibit the highest theoretical efficiencies to date. At high NA-of 0.9 with translation-invariant films and of 0.99 with "freeform" structures-our designs are the first to exhibit achromatic high-NA focusing.

Abstract:Over the past decade, metalens exhibit great potential for applications in compact optical devices. By modulating the phase, amplitude and polarization of the incident light, metalens are applied in a variety of flat optical components, such as micro spectrometers, polarizers and light-field imaging. However, the intrinsic effect of metalens with large chromatic aberration significantly restricts its application in wide-spectrum imaging. Herein, we developed a broadband achromatic polarization insensitive metalens operating in the NIR region in transmission mode. The particle swarm algorithm was utilized to improve the wave aberration by optimizing the reference phase corresponds to each designed wavelength. FDTD simulation was conducted to characterize the focusing performance of the metalens. The focal length of the metalens changes less than 4µm as the incident wavelength is varied from 1µm to 1.4µm. The maximum focusing efficiency of the designed metalens with a numerical aperture of 0.45 is about 43% near wavelength λ = 1.33µm. This research also paves a way for the application of metalens in night vision imaging.
