Abstract:An iterative algorithm was developed to assess the atmospheric environmental capacity governed by air quality targets, based on the third generation air quality model WRF-CAMx and national emission inventory of major air pollutants. The atmospheric environmental capacity of SO2, NOx, primary PM2.5 and NH3 emissions by provinces were calculated with the constrain of annual average ambient PM2.5 concentration standard(GB3095-2012). The results indicated that the national carrying capacity of SO2, NOx, primary PM2.5 and NH3 emissions was 1363.26×104t, 1258.48×104t, 619.04×104t, and 627.71×104t. The actual emissions of SO2, NOx, primary PM2.5 and NH3 in year 2010 were 66%, 81%, 96%, and 52% higher than the carring capacity. The emissions of these four types of air pollutants came from provinces that were severely polluted, such as Henan, Hebei, Tianjin, Anhui, Shandong, and Beijing, were exceeded 100% over its carrying capacity.
[Simulation of Air Pollution Characteristics and Estimates of Environmental Capacity in Zibo City].

Abstract:To develop a new pattern of air pollution control that is based on the integration of "concentration control, total amount control, and quality control", and in the context of developing national (2011-2015 air pollution control plan for key areas) and (Environmental protection plan of Zibo municipality for the "12th Five-Year Plan" period), a simulation of atmospheric dispersion of air pollutants in Zibo City and its peripheral areas is carried out by employing CALPUFF model, and the atmospheric environmental capacity of SO2, NO(x) and PM10 is estimated based on the results of model simulation and using multi-objective linear programming optimization. The results indicates that the air pollution in Zibo City is significantly related to the pollution sources outside of Zibo City, which contributes to the annual average concentration of SO2, NO2 and PM10 in Zibo City by 26.34%, 21.23%, and 14.58% respectively. There is a notable interaction between districts and counties of Zibo municipality, in which the contribution of SO2, NO(x) and PM10 emissions in surrounding counties and districts to the annual average concentrations of SO2, NO2 and PM10 in downtown area are 35.96%, 43.17%, and 17.69% respectively. There is a great variation in spatial sensitivity of air pollutant emission, and the environmental impact of unit pollutant emissions from Zhoucun, Huantai, Zhangdian and Zichuan is greater than that released from other districts/counties. To meet the requirement of (Ambient air quality standard) (GB 3095-2012), the environmental capacities of SO2, NO(x) and PM10 of Zibo City are only 8.03 x 10(4) t, 19.16 x 10(4) t and 3.21 x 10(4) t, respectively. Therefore, it is imperative to implement regional air pollution joint control in Shandong peninsula in order to ensure the achievement of air quality standard in Zibo City.

Abstract:In recent years,the fast development of industry led more environmental pollution in China,and the atmospheric pollution was the type that had the broadest impaction and the most immediate and inevitable damage to human beings.According to the meteorological environment overview of the harbor industrial zone and under the EIA guidelines,selecting the corresponding dispersion model and proper parameters,the text investigated the engineering project of One New Zinc Smelting Plant in Xiangtan County,forecasting contribution to the pollutants concentration under fumigation dispersion models after the plant operations.We took the results to analyze NH3 which had serious influence on residents of 2 kilometres away.The dust,SO2 and flume were mainly manifested in the 100 meters around the harbor industrial zone of impact on the pollutants abnomaly emissions at smoking dispersion model.Obviously,the research of atmospheric environmental influencing forecast and assessment of the harbor industrial zone had a positive theoretical and realistic significance.

Abstract:From 2013 to 2015,multiple policies and emission standards were implemented for coal-fired power generation industry in Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Region in China to reduce the total air pollution emission.In order to evaluate the implementation effects of the policies and emission standards,a survey based emission inventory was established.Spatialtemporal relationships between installed capacity of coal-fired power generators and emissions of SO2,NOx,and dust were analyzed.Results showed that,from 2013 to 2015,although total installed capacity decreased slightly,total emissions of SO2 、NOx and dust dropped 75.95％,83.09％ and 71.20％.The remarkable decrease of total emissions indicated a great implementation effects.The generators with less than 100 MW installed capacity discharged the most pollutions.The suggestion was to reduce the installed capacity and emission concentration of generators with less than 100 MW.

Abstract:With the implementation of the Air Pollution Prevention and Control Action Plan (APPCAP) since 2013, significant declines in pollutants concentrations have achieved in nationwide of China. However, as one of the major coal-production bases and intensive energy-consuming provinces in China, Shanxi has still been suffering from severe air quality problems in recent years. In this study, by combining a detailed bottom-up emission inventory and the weather research and forecasting (WRF) model/comprehensive air quality model with extensions (CAMx) model, the evolution of pollutant concentrations, source apportionment, and migration potentials from 2012 to 2015 in Shanxi are investigated. Estimated primary air pollutants emission declined significantly during 2012–2015. Compared with 2012, the simulated concentrations of PM2.5, PM10, SO2 and NO2 in January of 2015 are reduced by 24.7%, 24.1%, 23.0% and 18.0%, respectively. In contrast, heavy contaminated areas have shown negligible variations, which are highly concentrated in Taiyuan, Linfen, Jincheng, Changzhi, Lvliang, Yangquan and Jinzhong cities. In terms of contribution by source categories, the other industries and residential sources are identified as the most significant local contributors for PM2.5 and PM10, while SO2 and NO2 are mainly emitted by other industries and power plants. Scenarios analysis of 50% emission mitigation suggests that the emission reduction measures are generally more effective in summer than in winter. Moreover, the mitigation potential for each city varies from each other. These results indicate that more appropriate seasonal-specific emission reduction measures in each prefecture-level city should be implemented to further improve regional air quality and thus better protect public health.

Chemical Weather Forecasting for Eastern China

Abstract:Based on the Shanghai Meteorological Service WRF ADAS Real-time Modeling System (SMS-WARMS) and the Community Multi-scale Air Quality (CMAQ) model, a chemical weather forecasting system is being established for Eastern China. Anthropogenic emissions are based on Hemispheric Transport of Air Pollution (HTAP) 2010 dataset, and biogenic emissions are estimated using the Model of Emissions of Gases and Aerosols from Nature (MEGAN). Forecasting results during 7 August to 1 September 2016 are evaluated for Shanghai and eight provincial cities in Eastern China. The results exhibit large differences in model performance for different regions. The overestimation of NO2 and PM2.5 for the cities within or adjacent to the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) region suggests air quality measures taken in preparation of the 2016 G20 Summit were effective in reducing pollutants concentrations. The results also show that large reductions in HTAP 2010 NOx and SO2 emissions are required, suggesting that regular updates of emission inventories are necessary to capture the rapid changes in pollutant emissions in Eastern China.

Abstract:A result is obtained that PM_(10) ,TSP and SO_2 are the main factors of the atmospheric pollutant in Beijing by grey relational analysis.Based on the result,a forecasting model of main pollution factor is established by using grey systems.The forecasting result is that TSP and PM_(10) will exceed the national standard Ⅱ in the year of 2008 in Beijing.In the next years,the most important tasks of air pollution control in Beijing are to reduce the particulate pollution.

Abstract:For evaluating the energy consumption influence on the future air quality in Beijing, using 2000 as the base year and 2008 as the target year, to establish the emission inventory of primary PM10, SO2 and NOx related with energy utilization in 8 areas of Beijing. The air quality model was adopted to simulate the temporal and spatial distribution of each pollutant concentration in the urban 8 areas; and their emission, concentration distribution character and sectoral share responsibility rate were analyzed; the air quality in year 2008 was predicted. The contribution rates of industrial emission to the concentrations of primary PM10 and SO2 of energy consumption emission were above 40%, the contribution rate vehicles to the concentration of NOx was about 65%; According to the current policy and development trend, the air quality in the urban 8 areas of Beijing could become better in year 2008, the average concentrations of primary PM10, SO2 and NO2 related to the energy utilization at each monitoring site were about 25, 50, 51μg/m3, respectively.
Vehicle emission estimation in the Yangtze river delta: Past trends and future forecasting

Abstract:The vehicle emission trends in the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) were estimated. Multi-layer inventories of vehicle emissions from 2000 to 2010 were established for the whole YRD and province-level regions, e.g., Shanghai, Jiangsu, and Zhejiang. The trends in vehicle emissions during 2011-2015 were forecasted under two scenarios, which varied in vehicle emission control policies. The total vehicle emissions in the YRD in 2010 were 51 × 104 ton for hydrocarbon (HC), 367 × 104 ton for CO, 63 × 104 ton for NOx, and 3.9 × 104 ton for PM2.5, increasing by 4.8, 10, 71, and 14%, respectively, compared to emissions in 2000. The total vehicle emissions of HC, CO, and PM2 5 in the YRD started to decline in recent years. However, NOx emission did not decrease due to unsatisfactory control of on-road NO emission for heavy-duty diesel vehicles, e.g., trucks and buses. Motorcycle and light-duty vehicle were the major sources of vehicle HC and CO emissions, while trucks account for over 50 and 60% of vehicle NOx and PM2.5 emissions in the YRD from 2000 to 2010. Based on the predictions, NOx would be the air pollutant of most concern under the pressure of the reduction target in the "Twelfth Five Year Plan" period as well as new national air quality, standard released in March 2012. Trends in Air Pollutants Emissions in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and Its Surrounding Areas under Different Socioeconomic Scenarios.

Abstract:The Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau (QTP) and its surrounding areas are undergoing rapid changes in socioeconomic conditions, activity sectors, and emission levels. These changes underscore the significance of conducting local environmental assessments in the future and generating air pollutant emission forecasts necessary for effective evaluation. Current pollutants emissions pathways exhibit regional limitation since their based historical in-ventory could not accurately reflect the emission characteristics in QTP. This study constructed a high spatial resolution (0.1 degrees x 0.1 degrees) atmospheric pollutant emissions dataset in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and its surrounding Areas (QTPA) based on updated emission inventory and various socioeconomic scenarios. We found that the pollutant emissions levels are distinct among different social development scenarios, with SSP3-7.0 demon-strating the highest magnitude of emissions. Regional and sectoral contributions exhibit substantial variations. Notably, solid fuel combustion originating from residential sectors in Northeast India and open fires in Myanmar are identified as high-density sources of PM2.5 emissions. Current pollutant emission patterns in the QTPA are more akin to SSP2-4.5, however, specific regions such as Qinghai and Tibet have exhibited more pronounced trends of emission reduction. The comparison with previous datasets reveals that the predicted pollutant emissions in this study are lower than Scenario Model Intercomparison Project (SMIP) dataset but higher than Asian-Pacific Integrated Model (AIM) dataset due to the revised inventory data and model variations, in which the latter might be the main obstacle to accurate emissions prediction.

Abstract:A coupled advanced regional prediction system – community multi-scale air quality (ARPS–CMAQ) modeling system was applied to develop an abatement strategy for air pollutant emission in the Handan region of the northern China. The system was evaluated by comparing the simulated concentrations of particulate matter less than 10 µm (PM10) with the observed results in the study area during the four representative months in 2005. A process of planning emission abatement was applied by gradually reducing PM10 emissions from the original GIS-based emission inventory until a modeling emission scenario was obtained under which the simulated PM10 concentrations could satisfy the desired air quality objective. The air quality objective was represented by an air quality guideline satisfaction ratio of 80% to reach a daily PM10 concentration of 150 µg/m3 after the year 2010. The modeling system and results could provide sound basis for decision makers to develop an effective air quality management strategy.
Unveiling the Spatial-Temporal Characteristics and Driving Factors of Greenhouse Gases and Atmospheric Pollutants Emissions of Energy Consumption in Shandong Province, China

Abstract:As the largest energy-consuming province in China, Shandong faces the dual task of greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction and atmospheric pollution control. Based on the latest activity data and updated emission factors, this study establishes a high-resolution emission inventory (5 km × 5 km) for GHGs and main atmospheric pollutants from the energy consumption sectors of Shandong Province from 2010 to 2021, quantifies the relationship between social economic factors and GHGs and atmospheric pollutants emissions using the expanded stochastic environmental impact assessment (STIRPAT) model, and forecasts the future emission trend with the help of the scenario analysis method. Results indicate that the electricity and transportation sectors are the main contributors to all pollutants. Spatially, the high value of pollutants is mainly concentrated in the urban agglomerations of central and eastern Shandong. Up to 72% of GHGs and 50% of air pollution emissions are attributed to the top 10% of emission grids. Emission peaks occur mainly in summer and winter due to straw burning, increased utilization of temperature-controlled facilities, and expansion of plant capacity. Population, energy consumption, the proportion of secondary industry, and energy consumption intensity are the most significant influencing factors for pollutant emissions. Scenario analysis results indicate Shandong province can reach its carbon peak in 2027 without sacrificing population growth or economic progress.

Abstract:Abstract At present, China’s resource constraints are becoming tighter and environmental problems are serious. Shanxi province’s energy policies implementation has a huge impact on the ecological environment. This paper focuses on the emission of air pollutants from coal-fired power generation, coal chemical industry, biomass power generation, coal bed methane power generation, as well as the impact of emission reduction measures such as "coal to electricity" and "coal to gas" on the atmospheric environment in Shanxi Province. In 2015, coal power, coal chemical and other energy-related industries in Shanxi province emitted 429,800 tons of sulfur dioxide, 348,000 tons of nitrogen oxides and 364,400 tons of dust, accounting for 38%, 37% and 25% of the province’s industrial emissions respectively. After the strict implementation of energy policies, the emissions of air pollutants SO 2 , NO x and dust from energy-related industries should be 121,500 tons, 236,100 tons and 19,300 tons respectively in 2020. Emission of air pollutants SO 2 , NO x and dust from energy-related industries should be reduced by 72%, 32% and 95% respectively in 2020 compared with that of 2015. However, we need to improve environmental access, tighten standards, strengthen environmental protection requirements in the energy industry, and continue to optimize the energy consumption structure.
Study on carbon emission driving factors and carbon peak forecasting in power sector of Shanxi province

Abstract:The realisation of the low-carbon transition of the energy system in resource-intensive regions, as embodied by Shanxi Province, depends on a thorough understanding of the factors impacting the power sector's carbon emissions and an accurate prediction of the peak trend. Because of this, the power industry's carbon emissions in Shanxi province are measured in this article from 1995 to 2020 using data from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). To obtain a deeper understanding of the factors impacting carbon emissions in the power sector, factor decomposition is performed using the Logarithmic Mean Divisia Index (LMDI). Second, in order to precisely mine the relationship between variables and carbon emissions, the Sparrow Search Algorithm (SSA) aids in the optimisation of the Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM). In order to implement SSA-LSTM-based carbon peak prediction in the power industry, four development scenarios are finally built up. The findings indicate that: (1) There has been a fluctuating upward trend in Shanxi Province's total carbon emissions from the power industry between 1995 and 2020, with a cumulative growth of 372.10 percent. (2) The intensity of power consumption is the main factor restricting the rise of carbon emissions, contributing -65.19%, while the per capita secondary industry contribution factor, contributing 158.79%, is the main driver of the growth in emissions. (3) While the baseline scenario and the rapid development scenario fail to peak by 2030, the low carbon scenario and the green development scenario peak at 243,991,100 tonnes and 258,828,800 tonnes, respectively, in 2025 and 2028. (4) Based on the peak performance and the decomposition results, resource-intensive cities like Shanxi's power industry should concentrate on upgrading and strengthening the industrial structure, getting rid of obsolete production capacity, and encouraging the faster development of each factor in order to help the power sector reach peak carbon performance.

A High Spatial-Temporal Resolution Emission Inventory of Multi-Type Air Pollutants for Wuxi City

Abstract:Currently, atmospheric emission inventory that includes multi-type pollutants and sources is still limited at the city level. This study developed a high-resolution emission inventory of eight pollutants based on detailed investigated data for Wuxi city in 2015. Results show that the total emissions of sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen oxides (NOx), total suspended particulates (TSP), particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter of 10 gm or less (PM10), particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter of 2.5 mu m or less (PM2.5), carbon monoxide (CO), ammonia (NH3), and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were 36.9 kt, 95.2 kt, 287.3 kt, 127.8 kt, 46.0 kt, 626.4 kt, 10.9 kt, and 104.9 kt, respectively. Power plants were the major contributors of SO2 and NOx, accounting for 34.6% and 36.3% of the total emissions, respectively. Road dust was the dominant source of particulate matter, contributing 63.1%, 57.8% and 38.2% to the total TSP, PMio and PM2.5 emissions, respectively. Around 67.0% of CO emissions were from iron and steel plants, while 50.1% of NH3 emissions were from livestock and poultry sectors. VOCs emissions largely came from oil refinery and chemical industry, with a share of 41.3%. High NH3 emissions were found in the southwest and northeast of Wuxi where high-intensity agriculture was located, while other pollutants were mainly concentrated on the eastern Wuxi where heavy industries, crowded traffic and highly dense population were located. Most pollutants from the industrial source exhibited the lowest value in February due to the Chinese Spring Festival with the exception of CO and NH3. This study helps to formulate the targeted air pollution control measures for Wuxi city by providing detailed information regarding the spatial-temporal distribution of multi-type air pollutants. Abstract:Emission inventory of air pollutants is the key to understand the spatial and temporal distribution of atmospheric pollutants and to accurately simulate the ambient air quality. The currently established emission inventories are still limited on spatial and temporal resolution which greatly influences the numerical prediction accuracy of air quality. With coal-fired stationary sources considered, this study analyzed the total emissions and monthly variation of main pollutants from them in 2012 as the basic year, by collecting the on-line monitoring data for power plants and atmospheric verifiable accounting tables of Jiangsu Province. Emission factors in documents are summarized and adopted. Results indicated that the emission amounts of SO2 ,NOx ,TSP,PM10 ,PM2. 5 ,CO, EC,OC,NMVOC and NH3 were 106. 0, 278. 3, 40. 9, 32. 7, 21. 7, 582. 0, 3. 6, 2. 5, 17. 3 and 2. 2 kt, respectively. They presented monthly variation with high emission amounts in February, March, July, August and December and low emissions in September and October. The reason may be that more coal are consumed which leads to the increase of pollutants emitted, to satisfy the needs of heat and electricity power supply in cold and hot periods. Local emission factors are needed for emission inventory studies and the monthly variation should be considered when emission inventories are used in air quality simulation.

Abstract:Based on the monitoring results of air pollutants in Xi'an from 2016 to 2020, based on the statistical analysis of its annual average concentration, monthly average concentration, Spearman's rank correlation coefficient, comprehensive index of ambient air quality and pollutant load factor in the past five years, the air quality of Xi'an was further understood. The results show that: (1) except for ozone, the annual average concentration of pollutants in Xi'an showed a downward trend, and the monthly average concentration showed a “U” shape except ozone. The concentration increased obviously in autumn and winter, the pollution was more serious, and the air quality improved obviously in spring and summer. (2) TSP is the main air pollutant in Xi'an for five years. Although the concentration of TSP is decreasing, it still needs to be improved. (3) According to the correlation analysis of various air pollutants, PM10 and PM2.5 show significant positive correlation, and PM2.5 and PM10 have high homology with SO2, CO, NO2.

Abstract:On February 29th 2012, China published its new National Ambient Air Quality Standard (CH-NAAQS) aiming at revising the standards and measurements for both gaseous pollutants including ozone (O3), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and sulfur dioxide (SO2), and also particle pollutants including PM10 and PM2.5. In order to understand the air pollution status regarding this new standard, the integrated MM5/CMAQ modeling system was applied over Yangtze River Delta (YRD) within this study to examine the criteria gaseous pollutants listed in the new CH-NAAQS. Sensitivity simulations were also conducted to assess the responses of gaseous pollutants under 8 different sector-dependent emission reduction scenarios in order to evaluate the potential control strategies. 2006 was selected as the simulation year in order to review the air quality condition at the beginning of China's 11th Five-Year-Plan (FYP, from 2006 to 2010), and also compared with air quality status in 2010 as the end of 11th FYP to probe into the effectiveness of the national emission control efforts. Base case simulation showed distinct seasonal variation for gaseous pollutants: SO2, and NO2 were found to have higher surface concentrations in winter while O3 was found to have higher concentrations in spring and summer than other seasons. According to the analyses focused on 3 megacities within YRD, Shanghai, Nanjing, and Hangzhou, we found different air quality conditions among the cities: NO2 was the primary pollutant that having the largest number of days exceeding the CH-NAAQS daily standard (80 μg m−3) in Shanghai (59 days) and Nanjing (27 days); SO2 was the primary pollutant with maximum number of days exceeding daily air quality standard (150 μg m−3) in Hangzhou (28 days), while O3 exceeding the daily maximum 8-h standard (160 μg m−3) for relatively fewer days in all the three cities (9 days in Shanghai, 14 days in Nanjing, and 11 days in Hangzhou). Simulation results from predefined potential applicable emission control scenarios suggested significant air quality improvements from emission reduction: 90% of SO2 emission removed from power plant in YRD would be able to reduce more than 85% of SO2 pollution, 85% NOx emission reduction from power plant would reduce more than 60% of NO2 pollution, in terms of reducing the number of days exceeding daily air quality standard. NOx emission reduction from transportation and industry were also found to effectively reduce NO2 pollution but less efficient than emission control from power plants. We also found that multi-pollutants emission control including both NOx and VOC would be a better strategy than independent NOx control over YRD which is China's 12th Five-Year-Plan (from 2011 to 2015), because O3 pollution would be increased as a side effect of NOx control and counteract NO2 pollution reduction benefit.
