Abstract: Entirely real eigenvalues emerge for non-Hermitian systems if their Hamiltonians are symmetric or antisymmetric under the parity-time ($\mathcal{PT}$) operations. This fact has led to many unconventional discoveries such as loss-induced lasing, sensor response enhancement and topological energy transfer. One merit of anti-$\mathcal{PT}$ systems is free of any gain, but nonlinear medium is still required in recent efforts on making and utilizing anti-$\mathcal{PT}$ devices. Here, counterintuitively, we propose to achieve a $linear$ anti-$\mathcal{PT}$ device by combining dissipative optical coupling and the Sagnac frequency shifts of counterpropagating lights in a spinning resonator. Anti-$\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry and its spontaneous breaking can be well controlled by tuning the spinning velocity of the resonator. Compared with its Hermitian counterpart, 6 times enhancement of optical isolation and 2 orders enhancement of sensing response can be achieved by breaking the anti-$\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry. Configured as a new platform to study enhanced light-matter interactions, anti-$\mathcal{PT}$ resonators can also be used in such a wide range of fields as anti-$\mathcal{PT}$ lasers, anti-$\mathcal{PT}$ gyroscopes and anti-$\mathcal{PT}$ topological or chiral photonics.

Abstract:Non-reciprocal devices such as circulators and isolators are indispensable to classical and quantum information processing in photonic integrated circuits. But integrating conventional optical non-reciprocal devices, which employ the magneto-optical Faraday effect, is technically challenging because of material incompatibilities and the large footprint of device designs. Abstract:The principle of reciprocity underpins one of the fundamental effects in optics that signifies symmetric transmission with respect to the interchange of the source and observation points. Breaking reciprocity, however, enables additional functionalities and greatly enriches the applications of photonics in terms of nonreciprocal devices. Here, a realistic nanoscale cascaded-cavity system that envisages nonreciprocal optical isolation and efficient wavelength conversion based on spatiotemporally modulated index of refraction are proposed and numerically demonstrated. The on-chip, linear, magnetic-free nonreciprocal isolation and dynamically controllable wavelength conversion can be a promising candidate for silicon nanophotonic and optoelectronic devices.

Abstract:We report on the demonstration of an effective, nonlinearity-induced nonreciprocal behavior in a single nonmagnetic multi-mode Taiji resonator. Nonreciprocity is achieved by a combination of an intensity-dependent refractive index and of a broken spatial reflection symmetry. Continuous wave power-dependent transmission experiments show nonreciprocity and a direction-dependent optical bistability loop. These can be explained in terms of the unidirectional mode coupling that causes an asymmetric power enhancement in the resonator. The observations are quantitatively reproduced by a numerical finite-element theory and physically explained by an analytical coupled-mode theory. This nonlinear Taiji resonator has the potential of being the building block of large arrays for the study of topological and/or non-Hermitian physics. Abstract:Because the nonreciprocity has both theoretical and applicable prospects, it is desired to break through the restriction of the reciprocity principle for nonreciprocity optical transmission. Theoretically, the reciprocity principle is equivalent to the limited time reversal symmetry. To break the symmetry, the system should include nonlinearity, magneto-optical effects, or modulation in time. Some key components in the optical circuits, such as isolators, circulators, and phase shifters, are typical nonreciprocal devices. They are realized based on the Faraday effect of magneto-optical materials in traditional free-space optics. However, the magneto-optical materials are not naturally compatible with the integrated optics. Therefore, while pursuing the magneto-optical integration on a chip, people also devote to developing nonreciprocal theories and devices without magnetic materials. Whispering-gallery-modes (WGMs) optical microcavity has the advantages of small mode volume and high-quality factor. Therefore, many nonreciprocal strategies in photonic integration are based on optical microcavities. Similar to the nonreciprocal principle of the magneto-optical effect, the external bias fields (such as magnetic field, angular momentum, linear momentum, etc.) are necessary to break the time reversal symmetry. In this paper, we review the research on nonreciprocal optics in WGMs optical microcavities, and summarize recent research achievements in the following interaction categories: Magneto-optical effect, chiral coupling of atoms with energy level distribution bias, macroscopic Doppler effect with angular momentum bias, optomechanical driving, acousto-optic oscillation and nonlinear driving. Firstly, even on the chip, the magneto-optical effect is an important way to realize nonreciprocity. Nonreciprocity can be achieved by depositing/bonding magneto-optical materials on a silicon chip or using the spin-orbit interaction of WGMs in the YIG microsphere with the help of an external magnetic field. Secondly, preparing the atom to a specific Zeeman energy level can also lead to the polarization concerned interaction between the atoms and the photons, so that the nonreciprocity of the photon can be realized based on the control of the atomic ground state population. Thirdly, the Doppler effect can make the moving dielectric medium produce an additional refractive index related to the speed. Then the effective refractive index is different between the light propagating in the opposite directions. The reciprocity of the system is destroyed, thereby achieving nonreciprocity. Finally, the nonreciprocity of optomechanical systems, acousto-optic modulation, and nonlinear effects can be explained by the conservation of angular momentum of photon-phonon interactions. As a summary, some representative parameters of isolators obtained in related experiments are listed in the table. The existing solutions for nonreciprocity have also be classified in terms of angular momentum and interactions, which is beneficial to deeply understanding the existing solutions and to developing potential solutions. The research of nonreciprocity is also discussed by listing problems to be studied.

Abstract:Non-reciprocal devices, such as circulators and isolators, are indispensable components in classical and quantum information processing in an integrated photonic circuit. Aside from those applications, the non-reciprocal phase shift is of fundamental interest for exploring exotic topological photonics, such as the realization of chiral edge states and topological protection. However, incorporating low optical-loss magnetic materials into a photonic chip is technically challenging. In this study, we experimentally demonstrate non-magnetic non-reciprocity using optomechanical interactions in a whispering-gallery microresonator, as proposed by Hafezi and Rabl. Optomechanically induced non-reciprocal transparency and amplification are observed, and a non-reciprocal phase shift of up to 40 degrees is demonstrated in this study. The results of this study represent an important step towards integrated all-optical controllable isolators and circulators, as well as non-reciprocal phase shifters.
Non-Reciprocal Response in Silicon Photonic Resonators Integrated with 2D CuCrP2S6 at Short-Wave Infrared

Abstract:Achieving non-reciprocal optical behavior in integrated photonics with high efficiency has long been a challenge. Here, we demonstrate a non-reciprocal magneto-optic response by integrating multilayer 2D CuCrP2S6 (CCPS) onto silicon micro ring resonators (MRRs).Under an applied magnetic field, the CCPS intralayer ferromagnetic ordering, characterized by easy-plane magneto-crystalline anisotropy, induces asymmetrical modal responses in the clockwise (CW)and counterclockwise (CCW) light propagation directions. The proposed configuration achieves a low insertion loss of 0.15 dB and a high isolation ratio of 28 dB at 1550 nm. Notably, it exhibits a significant resonance wavelength splitting of 0.4 nm between the counter propagation directions, supporting a 50 GHz optical bandwidth. Operating directly in the transverse electric (TE) mode, it aligns with the main polarization used in silicon photonics circuit, eliminating the need for additional polarization management. The device is ultra-compact, with 2D flake interaction length ranging from 22 um to 55 um and a thickness between 39 nm and 62 nm. Its operation range covers the entire C-band with a bandwidth of up to 100 nm. These attributes make our hybrid CCPS/Si device ideal for advanced non-reciprocal optical applications in the short-wave infrared (SWIR)spectrum, crucial for enhancing the resilience of optical systems against back-reflections.

Abstract:Nonreciprocal optical components are crucial for important applications such as optical signal processing and laser feedback protection. While magneto-optic materials have traditionally been used to break reciprocity, they are incompatible with optoelectronic materials and are thus difficult to be integrated into on-chip photonics platforms. On the other hand, non-reciprocity can be introduced by dynamic modulation of materials' refractive indices. Since such modulation is compatible with the optoelectronic platform, this approach has shown great promise for constructing nonreciprocal optical devices. Here, we summarize how such dynamic modulation can be used to enable optical circulation on a photonic crystal slab, as well as to achieve direction-dependent absorption in a micro-ring resonator.

Abstract:Synchronization is of importance in both fundamental and applied physics, but its demonstration at the micro/nanoscale is mainly limited to low-frequency oscillations such as mechanical resonators. We report the synchronization of two coupled optical microresonators, in which the high-frequency resonances in the optical domain are aligned with reduced noise. It is found that two types of synchronization regimes emerge with either the first- or second-order transition, both presenting a process of spontaneous symmetry breaking. In the second-order regime, the synchronization happens with an invariant topological character number and a larger detuning than that of the first-order case. Furthermore, an unconventional hysteresis behavior is revealed for a time-dependent coupling strength, breaking the static limitation and the temporal reciprocity. The synchronization of optical microresonators offers great potential in reconfigurable simulations of manybody physics and scalable photonic devices on a chip.

Abstract:Nonreciprocity and nonreciprocal optical devices play a vital role in modern photonic technologies by enforcing one-way propagation of light. Most nonreciprocal devices today are made from a special class of low-loss ferrites that exhibit a magneto-optical response in the presence of an external static magnetic field. While breaking transmission symmetry, ferrites fail to satisfy the need for miniaturization of photonic circuitry due to weak character of nonreciprocal responses at optical wavelengths and are not easy to integrate into on-chip photonic systems. These challenges led to the emergence of magnetic-free approaches relying on breaking time reversal symmetry, e.g. with nonlinear effects modulating optical system in time. Here, we demonstrate an all-optical approach to nonreciprocity based on nonlinear valley-selective response in transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs). This approach overcomes the limitations of magnetic materials and it does not require an external magnetic field. We provide experimental evidence of photoinduced nonreciprocity in a monolayer WS2 pumped by circularly polarized light. Nonreciprocity stems from valley-selective exciton-exciton interactions, giving rise to nonlinear circular dichroism controlled by circularly polarized pump fields. Our experimental results reveal a significant effect even at room temperature, despite considerable intervalley-scattering, showing potential for practical applications in magnetic-free nonreciprocal platforms. As an example, we propose a device scheme to realize an optical isolator based on a pass-through silicon nitride (SiN) ring resonator integrating the optically biased TMD monolayer.

Abstract:Optical non-reciprocity, a phenomenon that allows unidirectional flow of optical field is pivoted on the time reversal symmetry breaking. The symmetry breaking happens in the cavity optomechanical system (COS) due to non uniform radiation pressure as a result of light-matter interaction, and is crucial in building non-reciprocal optical devices. In our proposed COS, we study the non-reciprocal transport of optical signals across two ports via three optical modes optomechanically coupled to the mechanical excitations of two nano-mechanical resonators (NMRs) under the influence of strong classical drive fields and weak probe fields. By tuning different system parameters, we discover the conversion of reciprocal to non-reciprocal signal transmission. We reveal perfect nonreciprocal transmission of output fields when the effective cavity detuning parameters are near resonant to the NMRs' frequencies. The unidirectional non-reciprocal signal transport is robust to the optomechanical coupling parameters at resonance conditions. Moreover, the cavities' photon loss rates play an inevitable role in the unidirectional flow of signal across the two ports. Bidirectional transmission can be fully controlled by the phase changes associated with the incoming probe and drive fields via two ports. Our scheme may provide a foundation for the compact non-reciprocal communication and quantum information processing, thus enabling new devices that route photons in unconventional ways such as all-optical diodes, optical transistors and optical switches.

Abstract:Breaking Lorentz reciprocity was believed to be a prerequisite for nonreciprocal transmissions of light fields, so the possibility of non reciprocity by linear optical systems was mostly ignored. We put forward a structure of three mutually coupled microcavitics or optical fiber rings to realize optical nonreciprocity. Although its couplings with the fields from two different input ports are constantly equal, such system transmits them nonreciprocally either under the saturation of an optical gain in one of the cavities or with the asymmetric couplings of the circulating fields in different cavities. The structure made up of optical fiber rings can perform nonreciprocal transmissions as a time--independent linear system without breaking Lorentz reciprocity. Optical isolation for inputs simultaneously from two different ports and even approximate optical isolator operations are implementable with the structure.
Highly efficient nonreciprocity and nonreciprocal photonic devices in a semiconductor quantum well

Abstract:We propose theoretically a non-magnetic optical nonreciprocity (ONR) scheme with high efficiency by employing the four-wave mixing (FWM) effect in an asymmetric semiconductor three-coupled-quantum-well (TCQW) nanostructure. Nonreciprocal transmission and nonreciprocal phase shift in this TCQW, both with high transmission rates, can be achieved using suitable parameters. Considering an orbital-angular-momentum (OAM) probe beam, the perfect nonreciprocity can be obtained based on the highly efficient FWM. Furthermore, the integration of this TCQW nanostructure into a Mach–Zehnder interferometer enables the fabrication of highly efficient optical isolators and optical circulators by selecting appropriate parameters. The optical isolator exhibits an isolation ratio of 97.76 dB and an insertion loss of 0.25 dB, while the optical circulator demonstrates a fidelity of 0.9993 and a photon survival probability of 0.9517. Our approach based on semiconductor media has the advantages of easy fabrication and good integration with adjustable parameters. In conjunction with the distinctive characteristics of the OAM beam, our protocol offers a theoretical framework for the development of highly integrated and multi-dimensional nonreciprocity and nonreciprocal photonic devices.

Abstract:Optical nonreciprocity plays a key role in almost every optical system, directing light flow and protecting optical components from backscattered light. Controllable forms of on-chip nonreciprocity are needed for the robust operation of increasingly sophisticated photonic integrated circuits (PICs) in the context of classical and quantum computation, networking, communications, and sensing. However, it has been challenging to achieve wideband, low-loss optical nonreciprocity on-chip. In this paper, we demonstrate strong coupling and Rabi-like energy exchange between photonic bands, possessing a continuum of modes, to unlock nonreciprocity and frequency translation over wide optical bandwidths in silicon. Using a traveling-wave phonon field to drive indirect interband photonic transitions, we demonstrate band hybridization that enables an intriguing form of nonreciprocal dissipation engineering. Using the converted mode to create a nonreciprocal dissipation channel, we demonstrate a frequency-neutral, low-loss (less than 1 dB) isolator with high nonreciprocal contrast (more than 14 dB) and broad operating bandwidth (more than 59 GHz). Abstract:Optical nonreciprocity is an essential property for a wide range of applications, such as building nonreciprocal optical devices that include isolators and circulators. The realization of optical nonreciprocity relies on breaking the symmetry associated with Lorentz reciprocity, which typically requires stringent conditions such as introducing a strong magnetic field or a high-finesse cavity with nonreciprocal coupling geometry. Here we discover that the collision effect of thermal atoms, which is undesirable for most studies, can induce broadband optical nonreciprocity. By exploiting the thermal atomic collision, we experimentally observe magnet-free and cavity-free optical nonreciprocity, which possesses a high isolation ratio, ultrabroad bandwidth, and low insertion loss simultaneously. The maximum isolation ratio is close to 40 dB, while the insertion loss is less than 1 dB. The bandwidth for an isolation ratio exceeding 20 dB is over 1.2 GHz, which is 2 orders of magnitude broader than typical resonance-enhanced optical isolators. Our work paves the way for the realization of high-performance optical nonreciprocal devices and provides opportunities for applications in integrated optics and quantum networks.

Abstract:Nonreciprocity is important in both optical information processing and topological photonics studies. Conventional principles for realizing nonreciprocity rely on magnetic fields, spatiotemporal modulation, or nonlinearity. Here we propose a generic principle for generating nonreciprocity by taking advantage of energy loss, which is usually regarded as harmful. The loss in a resonance mode induces a phase lag, which is independent of the energy transmission direction. When multichannel lossy resonance modes are combined, the resulting interference gives rise to nonreciprocity, with different coupling strengths for the forward and backward directions, and unidirectional energy transmission. This study opens a new avenue for the design of nonreciprocal devices without stringent requirements.

Abstract:As a promising approach for optical nonreciprocity without magnetic materials, optomechanically induced nonreciprocity has great potential for all-optical controllable isolators and circulators on chips. However, as a very important issue in practical applications, the bandwidth for nonreciprocal transmission with high isolation has not been fully investigated yet. In this study we review the nonreciprocity in a Brillouin optomechanical system with single cavity and point out the challenge in achieving broad bandwidth with high isolation. To overcome this challenge, we propose a one dimensional optomechanical array to realize broadband optical nonreciprocity via nonreciprocal band structure. We exploit nonreciprocal band structure by the stimulated Brillouin scattering induced transparency with directional optical pumping, and show that it is possible to demonstrate optical nonreciprocity with both broad bandwidth and high isolation. Such Brillouin optomechanical lattices with nonreciprocal band structure, offer an avenue to explore nonreciprocal collective effects in different electromagnetic and mechanical frequency regimes, such as nonreciprocal topological photonic and phononic phases.

Abstract:Non-reciprocal optical components are indispensable in optical applications, and their realization without any magnetic field arose increasing research interests in photonics. Exciting experimental progress has been achieved by either introducing spatial-temporal modulation of the optical medium or combining Kerr-type optical nonlinearity with spatial asymmetry in photonic structures. However, extra driving fields are required for the first approach, while the isolation of noise and the transmission of the signal cannot be simultaneously achieved for the other approach. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a new concept of nonlinear non-reciprocal susceptibility for optical media and realize the completely passive isolation of optical signals without any external bias field. The self-induced isolation by the input signal is demonstrated with an extremely high isolation ratio of 63.4 dB, a bandwidth of 2.1 GHz for 60 dB isolation, and a low insertion loss of around 1 dB. Furthermore, novel functional optical devices are realized, including polarization purification and non-reciprocal leverage. The demonstrated nonlinear non-reciprocity provides a versatile tool to control light and deepen our understanding of light-matter interactions, and enables applications ranging from topological photonics to unidirectional quantum information transfer in a network.
