Abstract:Incorporating wave energy converters (WECs) into offshore aquaculture platforms to substitute conventional fossil fuel-based energy supply provides a plausible pathway to accelerate the Global Net-Zero ambition, and at the same time protects the aquaculture cages by damping the incoming waves. A new concept of a single-point moored cage-WEC hybrid system is proposed in this study, where the cage is anchored to a point absorber type WEC and the WEC is moored to the seabed through a linear Power Take-off system. A Finite Element Method (FEM) based fully nonlinear numerical methodology is developed to assess the hydrodynamic performance of the proposed concept. A one-way coupling approach of the cage-WEC hybrid system is established to solve the rigid motions and the elastic deflections of the cage, based on the principle of equal buoyancy distribution and equivalent mesh group. After validation of the developed methodology, a multi-parameter sensitivity study is performed to assess the energy conversion of the WECs and the hydroelastic interaction of the cage. Simulation results suggest the proposed hybrid system can effectively capture wave power regardless of incident wave angles. For the rigid-flexible integrated system, the in-phase and out-of-phase motion of elastic modes play constructive and destructive roles in energy extraction of short-period and long-period waves, respectively, demonstrating the importance of including hydro-elasticity modelling in such kinds of problems.
