Abstract:Suspended graphene-sheet waveguides feature very distinguishing characteristics such as long propagation length, long carrier relaxation time, and low propagation loss. Despite the advantages of the waveguides, their short coupling length poses a serious challenge, resulting in a major cross-talk in optical integrated circuits. In this study, a novel cross-talk suppression method is introduced for the proposed nano-plasmonic waveguide. In the first step, the mode properties of the waveguide consisting of an Au ridge and a silicon substrate are investigated, and then Au strips are inserted beside the two adjacent Au ridge waveguides. Based on the dispersion equation, the strips manipulate wave vectors penetrating the surrounding regions, resulting in longer coupling lengths and lower cross-talk. This translates to a coupling length of up to 1.3 × 10 5 μm for the Au ridge waveguide with the Au strips, which is approximately 778.7 times longer than that of the silicon ridge waveguide without the strips at a wavelength of 10 μm. Notably, the figure-of-merit and propagation length of the designed structure reach up to 780 and 0.28 dB/μm, respectively, at a chemical potential of 0.8 eV and a wavelength of 10 μm. Therefore, the proposed plasmonic waveguide's key features are its large figure-of-merit, low propagation loss, and long coupling length, making it a promising candidate for ultra-high packing density structures.
