Abstract:This paper studies the configuration space of all possible positions of a linkage in R^n. For example, it shows that for every compact algebraic set, there is a linkage whose configuration space is analytically isomorphic to a finite number of copies of the algebraic set. If flexible edges are allowed, any compact set given by polynomial equalities and inequalities is the configuration space of a linkage. This paper also characterizes functions which can be computed by linkages.

A Generalization of Kempe’s Linkages

Abstract:A new, general type of planar linkages is presented, which extends the classical linkages developed by Kempe consisting of two single-looped kinematic chains of linkages, interconnected by revolute hinges. Together with a locking device, these new linkages have only one degree of freedom (DOF), which makes them ideal for serving as deployable structures for different purposes. Here, we start with a fresh matrix method of analysis for double-loop planar linkages, using 2D transformation matrices and a new symbolic notation. Further inspection for one case of Kempe’s linkages is provided. Basing on the inspection, by means of some novel algebraic and geometric techniques, one particularly fascinating solution was found. Physical models were built to show that the derivation in this paper is valid and the new mechanisms are correct.

Abstract:This paper deals with the planar closed loop double chain linkages consisting of a series of scissor like pairs connected by hinges. The chain is made of a serious of loop parallelograms, i.e., in the assemblies each set of four neighbouring hinges form a parallelogram. Three cases of mobile assemblies have been identified: the chains with intersecting and non-intersecting pairs as well as a mixture of both pairs. The corresponding mobility conditions are derived. Physical models were made which demonstrates that our proofs are correct.

Abstract:We define a decomposition of link projections whose pieces we call atoroidal graphs. We describe a surgery operation on these graphs and show that all atoroidal graphs can be generated by performing surgery repeatedly on a family of well known link projections. This gives a method of enumerating atoroidal graphs and hence link projections by recomposing the pieces of the decomposition.

Abstract:We prove that two cyclically linked $p$-algebras of prime degree become inseparably linked under a prime to $p$ extension if and only if the essential $p$-dimension of the pair is 2. We conclude that the essential $p$-dimension of pairs of cyclically linked $p$-algebras is 3 by constructing an example of a pair that does not become inseparably linked under any prime to $p$ extension.

Abstract:We study ordered configuration spaces of compact manifolds with boundary. We show that for a large class of such manifolds, the real homotopy type of the configuration spaces only depends on the real homotopy type of the pair consisting of the manifold and its boundary. We moreover describe explicit real models of these configuration spaces using three different approaches. We do this by adapting previous constructions for configuration spaces of closed manifolds which relied on Kontsevich's proof of the formality of the little disks operads. We also prove that our models are compatible with the richer structure of configuration spaces, respectively a module over the Swiss-Cheese operad, a module over the associative algebra of configurations in a collar around the boundary of the manifold, and a module over the little disks operad.

Abstract:After 1-point compactification, the collection of all unordered configuration spaces of a manifold admits a commutative multiplication by superposition of configurations. We explain a simple (derived) presentation for this commutative monoid object. Using this presentation, one can quickly deduce Knudsen's formula for the rational cohomology of configuration spaces, prove rational homological stability, and understand how automorphisms of the manifold act on the cohomology of configuration spaces. Similar considerations reproduce the work of Farb--Wolfson--Wood on homological densities.

Abstract:The linking integral is an invariant of the link-type of two manifolds immersed in a Euclidean space. It is shown that the ordinary Gauss integral in three dimensions may be simplified to a winding number integral in two dimensions. This result is then generalized to show that in certain circumstances the linking integral between arbitrary manifolds may be similarly reduced to a lower dimensional integral.

Abstract:A kinematic chain in three-dimensional Euclidean space consists of $n$ links that are connected by spherical joints. Such a chain is said to be within a closed configuration when its link lengths form a closed polygonal chain in three dimensions. We investigate the space of configurations, described in terms of joint angles of its spherical joints, that satisfy the the loop closure constraint, meaning that the kinematic chain is closed. In special cases, we can find a new set of parameters that describe the diagonal lengths (the distance of the joints from the origin) of the configuration space by a simple domain, namely a cube of dimension $n-3$. We expect that the new findings can be applied to various problems such as motion planning for closed kinematic chains or singularity analysis of their configuration spaces. To demonstrate the practical feasibility of the new method, we present numerical examples.

Abstract:Abstract The configuration space (c-space) of a mechanism is the real solution variety of a set of loop closure constraints, which is therefore the chief object in kinematic analysis. Singularities of this variety (referred to as c-space singularities) are singular configurations of the mechanism. In addition, a mechanism may exhibit other kinematic singularities that are not visible from the differential geometry of the c-space (referred to as hidden singularities). The latter are manifested by a drop of rank of the constraint Jacobian while the c-space is locally a smooth manifold. Another kinematic feature that is only due to the corank of the constraint Jacobian, i.e. of the joint screw system, is the shakiness of a mechanism. Such situations were analyzed by investigating the local geometry of the c-space and its corank stratification. It has been shown recently that hidden singularities and shakiness can be attributed to the fact that complex solution branches intersect with the c-space, i.e., with real solution branches. This paper employs the kinematic tangent cone to identify local solution branches. While the kinematic tangent cone is an established generally applicable concept, which gives rise to a computational (numeric and symbolic) algorithm, it has yet only been applied to analyzing the real solution set. Application of the method is shown for several examples. Further, the algebraic aspects are briefly elaborated.

Abstract:A linkage mechanism consists of rigid bodies assembled by joints which can be used to translate and transfer motion from one form in one place to another. In this paper, we are particularly interested in a family of spacial linkage mechanisms which consist of $n$-copies of a rigid body joined together by hinges to form a ring. Each hinge joint has its own axis of revolution and rigid bodies joined to it can be freely rotated around the axis. The family includes the famous threefold symmetric Bricard6R linkage also known as the Kaleidocycle, which exhibits a characteristic "turning over" motion. We can model such a linkage as a discrete closed curve in $\mathbb{R}^3$ with a constant torsion up to sign. Then, its motion is described as the deformation of the curve preserving torsion and arc length. We describe certain motions of this object that are governed by the semi-discrete mKdV equations, where infinitesimally the motion of each vertex is confined in the osculating plane.

Characterizing graphs with convex and connected configuration spaces

Abstract:We define and study exact, efficient representations of realization spaces Euclidean Distance Constraint Systems (EDCS), which includes Linkages and Frameworks. Each representation corresponds to a choice of Cayley parameters and yields a different parametrized configuration space. Significantly, we give purely graph-theoretic, forbidden minor characterizations that capture (i) the class of graphs that always admit efficient configuration spaces and (ii) the possible choices of representation parameters that yield efficient configuration spaces for a given graph. In addition, our results are tight: we show counterexamples to obvious extensions. This is the first step in a systematic and graded program of combinatorial characterizations of efficient configuration spaces. We discuss several future theoretical and applied research directions. Some of our proofs employ an unusual interplay of (a) classical analytic results related to positive semi-definiteness of Euclidean distance matrices, with (b) recent forbidden minor characterizations and algorithms related to the notion of d-realizability of EDCS. We further introduce a novel type of restricted edge contraction or reduction to a graph minor, a "trick" that we anticipate will be useful in other situations.

Abstract:We examine the heap of linear connections on anchored vector bundles and Lie algebroids. Naturally, this covers the example of affine connections on a manifold. We present some new interpretations of classical results via this ternary structure of connections. Endomorphisms of linear connections are studied, and their ternary structure, in particular the endomorphism truss, is explicitly presented. We remark that the use of ternary structures in differential geometry is novel and that the endomorphism truss of linear connections provides a concrete geometric example of a truss.

Abstract:We study a simple geometric model for local transformations of bipartite graphs. The state consists of a choice of a vector at each white vertex made in such a way that the vectors neighboring each black vertex satisfy a linear relation. Evolution for different choices of the graph coincides with many notable dynamical systems including the pentagram map, $Q$-nets, and discrete Darboux maps. On the other hand, for plabic graphs we prove unique extendability of a configuration from the boundary to the interior, an elegant illustration of the fact that Postnikov's boundary measurement map is invertible. In all cases there is a cluster algebra operating in the background, resolving the open question for $Q$-nets of whether such a structure exists.

Abstract:A closed linkage mechanism in three-dimensional space is an object comprising rigid bodies connected with hinges in a circular form like a rosary. Such linkages include Bricard6R and Bennett4R. To design such a closed linkage, it is necessary to solve a high-degree algebraic equation, which is generally difficult. In this lecture, the author proposes a new family of closed linkage mechanisms with an arbitrary number of hinges as an extension of a certain Bricard6R. They have singular properties, such as one-dimensional degree of freedom (1-DOF), and certain energies taking a constant value regardless of the state. These linkage mechanisms can be regarded as discrete Möbius strips and may be of interest in the context of pure mathematics as well. However, many of the properties described here have been confirmed only numerically, with no rigorous mathematical proof, and should be interpreted with caution.

Abstract:Linkages are mechanical devices constructed from rigid bars and freely rotating joints studied both for their utility in engineering and as mathematical idealizations in a number of physical systems. Recently, there has been a resurgence of interest in designing linkages to perform certain tasks from the physics community. We describe a method to design the topology of the configuration space of a linkage by first identifying the manifold of critical points, then perturbing around such critical configurations. We then demonstrate our procedure by designing a mechanism to gate the propagation of a soliton in a Kane-Lubensky chain of interconnected rotors.

Abstract:Cobordism categories are known to be compact closed. They can therefore be used to define non-degenerate models of multiplicative linear logic by combining the Int construction with double glueing. In this work we detail such construction in the case of low-dimensional cobordisms, and exhibit a connexion between those models and the model of Interaction graphs introduced by Seiller. In particular, we exhibit how the so-called trefoil property is a consequence of the associativity of composition of higher structures, providing a first step toward establishing models as obtained from a double glueing construction. We discuss possible extensions to higher-dimensional cobordisms categories
