Abstract:Thirty years ago,the invention and volume shipment of IBM PC significantly enlarged the user population of computing.For the next thirty years,what is the most fundamental challenge of the computing field? What paradigm shift is needed? What is the most significant industrial problem? What are the most needed scientific breakthroughs? This article addresses these questions by discussing a dozen essential issues of computing for the masses.The most fundamental challenge is the computing market's growth stagnation.Computing for the masses is proposed to reverse this trend and should be a fundamental future direction.It has three features of value-augmenting,affordability,and sustainability.The most basic paradigm shift is human-cyber-physical ternary computing.The most significant industrial problem is the Insecta Classis paradox.Computing for the masses needs five pillars of science support,including ternary computing science,universal compute account,efficient sea-network-cloud computing platforms,information ecosystem science,and national information accounts.This article helps outline the problem space for future computer science research,with a discussion on related transformative research projects.
Is Subjective Self-Identity Programmable?

Abstract:We investigate the open issue of the limit of computer intelligence. A person’s subjective self is his/her inner ego. Reasoning logically, we disprove the statement “a digital robot can be programmed to have subjective self” by showing that “subjective self” is unitary and un-duplicable while computer codes are duplicable; therefore, subjective self-identity, “I”, cannot be achieved on electronic computers through programming. The potential of electronic computers is not unlimited. A digital robot can be super-intelligent and super-capable in near future, but it will have no subjective self-identity and self-consciousness. Humanoid robots will not be a “species” as humans. How to deal with such a “species” is now an imminent and critical issue for our humanity.

Abstract:We are incredibly lucky! When I look back in time, I see no time more exciting than now! When I look forward in time, I see no time more exciting than now! For now, we are privileged to witness the dawn of the era of personal information processing. Few people have ever lived at such a time of technological change. Perhaps only those who were present when the first book was printed have, before us, had a similar opportunity to observe the birth of a technology-derived tool having the power of the personal computer to improve our quality of life. We are presently witnessing what is probably the most significant of all technology-based revolutions surpassing in importance the printing press, the automobile and the assembly line. Low-cost abundant computing brings us to the dawn of a new era. A new era in which information processing power will no longer be the exclusive tool of government and large business. Rather we will have computers for people to use in a near limitless variety f ways in our work, our play, and all aspects of our daily lives.

Abstract:Let us reflect on the state of robotics. This year marks the $101$-st anniversary of R.U.R., a play by the writer Karel \v{C}apek, often credited with introducing the word "robot". The word used to refer to feudal forced labourers in Slavic languages. Indeed, it points to one key characteristic of robotic systems: they are mere slaves, have no rights, and execute our wills instruction by instruction, without asking anything in return. The relationship with us humans is commensalism; in biology, commensalism subsists between two symbiotic species when one species benefits from it (robots boost productivity for humans), while the other species neither benefits nor is harmed (can you really argue that robots benefit from simply functioning?). We then distinguish robots from "living machines", that is, machines infused with life. If living machines should ever become a reality, we would need to shift our relationship with them from commensalism to mutualism. The distinction is not subtle: we experience it every day with domesticated animals, that exchange serfdom for forage and protection. This is because life has evolved to resist any attempt at enslaving it; it is stubborn. In the path towards living machines, let us ask: what has been achieved by robotics in the last $100$ years? What is left to accomplish in the next $100$ years? For us, the answers boil down to three words: juice, need (or death), and embodiment, as we shall see in the following.

Abstract:On March 18, 2024, NVIDIA unveiled Project GR00T, a general-purpose multimodal generative AI model designed specifically for training humanoid robots. Preceding this event, Tesla's unveiling of the Optimus Gen 2 humanoid robot on December 12, 2023, underscored the profound impact robotics is poised to have on reshaping various facets of our daily lives. While robots have long dominated industrial settings, their presence within our homes is a burgeoning phenomenon. This can be attributed, in part, to the complexities of domestic environments and the challenges of creating robots that can seamlessly integrate into our daily routines.

Abstract:Automation is not a new phenomenon, and questions about its effects have long followed its advances. More than a half-century ago, US President Lyndon B. Johnson established a national commission to examine the impact of technology on the economy, declaring that automation "can be the ally of our prosperity if we will just look ahead". In this paper, our premise is that we are at a technological inflection point in which robots are developing the capacity to greatly increase their cognitive and physical capabilities, and thus raising questions on labor dynamics. With increasing levels of autonomy and human-robot interaction, intelligent robots could soon accomplish new human-like capabilities such as engaging into social activities. Therefore, an increase in automation and autonomy brings the question of robots directly participating in some economic activities as autonomous agents. In this paper, a technological framework describing a robot economy is outlined and the challenges it might represent in the current socio-economic scenario are pondered.

Abstract:About half a billion years ago, life on earth experienced a short period of very rapid diversification called the “Cambrian Explosion.” Many theories have been proposed for the cause of the Cambrian Explosion, one of the most provocative being the evolution of vision, allowing animals to dramatically increase their ability to hunt and find mates. Today, technological developments on several fronts are fomenting a similar explosion in the diversification and applicability of robotics. Many of the base hardware technologies on which robots depend—particularly computing, data storage, and communications—have been improving at exponential growth rates. Two newly blossoming technologies—“Cloud Robotics” and “Deep Learning”—could leverage these base technologies in a virtuous cycle of explosive growth. I examine some key technologies contributing to the present excitement in the robotics field. As with other technological developments, there has been a significant uptick in concerns about the societal implication of robotics and artificial intelligence. Thus, I offer some thoughts about how robotics may affect the economy and some ways to address potential difficulties.

Abstract:Robotics landscape is experiencing big changes. Robots are spreading and will soon be everywhere. Systems traditionally employed in industry are being replaced by collaborative robots, while more and more professional and consumer robots are introduced in people's daily activities. Robots are increasingly intertwined with other facets of IT and envisioned to get much more autonomy, interacting physically with humans. We claim that, following Personal Computers (PCs) and smartphones, robots are the next technological revolution and yet, robot security is being ignored by manufacturers. The present paper aims to alert about the need of dealing not only with safety but with robot security from the very beginning of the forthcoming technological era. We provide herein a document that reviews robot hazards and analyzes the consequences of not facing these issues. We advocate strongly for a security-first approach as a must to be implemented now.

Abstract:Since their introduction in factories in 1961, robots have evolved to achieve more and more elaborate tasks.The industrial robots now account for a 5 billion dollars market.Positioned along the assembly line, a robotic manipulator can perform tedious and repetitive tasks such as welding, painting, moving or cutting with immense speed and incredible accuracy.As an example, their use in the automotive industry has drastically cut the time it takes to assemble a vehicle.Since the introduction of the first industrial robot UNIMATE online in a General Motors automobile factory in New Jersey in 1961, robots have gained stronger and stronger foothold in the industry.Several milestones are worth noting since then: The first artificial robotic arm to be controlled by a computer was designed.The Rancho Arm was designed as a tool for the handicapped and its six joints gave it the flexibility of a human arm.DENDRAL was the first expert system or program designed to execute the accumulated knowledge of subject experts.1968 -The octopus-like Tentacle Arm was developed by Marvin Minsky.1969 -The Stanford Arm was the first electrically powered, computer-controlled robot arm.1970 -Shakey was introduced as the first mobile robot controlled by artificial intelligence.It was produced by SRI International.1974 -A robotic arm (the Silver Arm) that performed small-parts assembly using feedback from touch and pressure sensors was designed.1979 -The Stanford Cart crossed a chair-filled room without human assistance.The cart had a TV camera mounted on a rail which took pictures from multiple angles and relayed them to a computer.The computer analyzed the distance between the cart and the obstacles.It is no surprising that in face of diverse configurations, functions, applications, and autonomy there is no agreeable universal definition of "Robot".The well-known definition of Robot from the Robot Institute of America (RIA) is that a robot is "A reprogrammable, multifunctional manipulator designed to move material, parts, tools, or specialized devices through various programmed motions for the performance of a variety of tasks".

Abstract:From the enraged robots in the 1920 play R.U.R. to the homicidal computer H.A.L. in 2001: A Space Odyssey, science fiction writers have embraced the dark side of artificial intelligence (AI) ever since the concept entered our collective imagination. Sluggish progress in AI research, especially during the “AI winter” of the 1970s and 1980s, made such worries seem far-fetched. But recent breakthroughs in machine learning and vast improvements in computational power have brought a flood of research funding— and fresh concerns about where AI may lead us. One researcher now speaking up is Stuart Russell, a computer scientist at the University of California, Berkeley, who with Peter Norvig, director of research at Google, wrote the premier AI textbook, Artificial Intelligence: A Modern Approach, now in its third edition. Last year, Russell joined the Centre for the Study of Existential Risk at Cambridge University in the United Kingdom as an AI expert focusing on “risks that could lead to human extinction.” Among his chief concerns, which he aired at an April meeting in Geneva, Switzerland, run by the United Nations, is the danger of putting military drones and weaponry under the full control of AI systems. This interview has been edited for clarity and brevity.

Abstract:One hundred years ago, the Czech writer Karel apek gave us the word robot, which first appeared in his play R.U.R. in 1920 (although, later, he identified his brother Josef as the actual source of the term). Long before science fiction became recognized as a separate genre, apek wrote plays and novels in which he discussed ethical aspects of industrial inventions and processes, including mass production and robots. His robots were not exactly robots as we think of them today; they were living flesh-and-blood creatures rather than assemblages of mechanical components and electronics. Last year, I was invited for a debate following a performance of the famous play. A century after its creation, the theme of robots, in whatever form, is more topical than ever. While man increasingly plays God, his creation threatens to take over more and more. R.U.R. is as visionary as it is relevant, as tragic as it is comical, and as unlikely as it is frightening.

Abstract:In 1950, Alan Turing proposed an imitation game as the ultimate test of whether a machine was intelligent: could a machine imitate a human so well that its answers to questions indistinguishable from a human. Ever since, creating intelligence that matches human intelligence has implicitly or explicitly been the goal of thousands of researchers, engineers, and entrepreneurs. The benefits of human-like artificial intelligence (HLAI) include soaring productivity, increased leisure, and perhaps most profoundly, a better understanding of our own minds. But not all types of AI are human-like. In fact, many of the most powerful systems are very different from humans. So an excessive focus on developing and deploying HLAI can lead us into a trap. As machines become better substitutes for human labor, workers lose economic and political bargaining power and become increasingly dependent on those who control the technology. In contrast, when AI is focused on augmenting humans rather than mimicking them, then humans retain the power to insist on a share of the value created. Furthermore, augmentation creates new capabilities and new products and services, ultimately generating far more value than merely human-like AI. While both types of AI can be enormously beneficial, there are currently excess incentives for automation rather than augmentation among technologists, business executives, and policymakers.
