Abstract:Listening skill plays an important role in studying a foreign language, especially English. However, students face a lot of difficulties in English listening. This study aims to find out the status and difficulties in listening comprehension of 149 non-English majored freshmen majoring in Pharmacy, Accounting, Business Administration, Food Technology, and Information Technology at Tay Do University. A listening achievement test was offered when the participants were studying TOEIC-based course 1. The research results found out some listening problems due to (1) lack of vocabulary knowledge, (2) inability to recognize and distinguish sounds, (3) limited reasoning ability and limited ability to use listening strategies such as judgment, taking notes, or memorizing, and (4) lack of concentration. The above results also showed some issues to which teachers need to pay attention to help learners improve their listening skill.

Abstract:Since the new curriculum reform, the examination of English in the college entrance examination mainly focuses on language communication, in which listening is one of the key examination items, and it also occupies a certain proportion in the score of English in the college entrance examination. However, as far as the English listening teaching in China is concerned, a considerable part of English teachers' teaching methods are too single, and their teaching level varies, which leads to the slow enhancement of students' listening ability, and some students can't even pronounce the words in a standardized way, not to mention getting good grades in the college entrance examination process. This paper discusses the difficult dilemmas in English listening teaching in the college entrance examination, including students' weak basic knowledge, single listening material, lack of listening skills and poor psychological quality. Aiming at these problems, this paper puts forward a series of coping strategies, including strengthening basic knowledge learning, enriching listening materials, improving listening skills and strengthening psychological quality exercise. Through qualitative research, this paper verifies the effectiveness of these strategies and provides a useful reference for improving the effect of English listening teaching in the college entrance examination.

The Influence of Krashen’s Input Hypothesis on Teaching College English Listening in China

Abstract:Listening is the main task in college English language teaching. Listening comprehension of English is also a big obstacle for English majors. Most college students consider listening comprehension to be the most difficult aspect and the weakest part in students’ English studying. Therefore, how to improve a college student’s listening comprehensive ability becomes a hot topic among English teachers. This paper explains Krashen’s Input Hypothesis, analyzes the current situation of listening courses in college in China, and the influence of Krashen’s Input Hypothesis on college English listening. Thus, the English teachers can arouse the student’s interest in learning English and improve their listening ability.

Abstract:Purpose: This quantitative research is to investigate the significant factors and to discover the existing problems affecting English listening comprehension skills of EIC undergraduate students at RMUTL Tak, Thailand. Method: This is survey research. The participants were 46 students who were the 3rd and 4th year students selected by purposive method. The research instrument was an online questionnaire which was gathered and analyzed by descriptive statistics. Results and Conclusion: The findings reveal that factors affecting English listening comprehension skills compose of (1) Factors relating to text, (2) Factors relating to linguistic features, (3) Factors relating to speakers, and (4) Factors relating to listeners. The problems affecting English listening comprehension skills compose of (1) Speaker accent, (2) Speaker speed of speaking, (3) New vocabulary and (4) English knowledge of the listeners respectively, and overall, it was found that students had listening comprehension problems at high level (x ̅ = 3.80, S.D. = 0.763). Furthermore, both the factors and the problems highlighted were crucial information required to remedy and improve the students' English listening comprehension skills. Research Implications: Therefore, those who want to improve their English listening comprehension should be aware of these factors and problems; however, others factors and problems must be considered when developing English listening comprehension as well. Furthermore, listeners should be aware of all factors and problems that affect their intelligibility and should develop their own listening more or practice listening more for solving the factors and problems exploring in this study, practicing listening to a variety of listening media, such as the news, music, movies, talk shows, speeches or talks: Ted Talks as one of the listening strategy applied, to become accustomed to and learn more about the various accents and speaker speeds and listener can practice their own listening skills further outside the classroom. Originality/Value: Teachers can use these to solve problems for students to practice listening skills in the classroom, and those who want to practice listening skills can apply these methods or practice themselves to improve their listening skills. Nevertheless, this research still has some weaknesses.

Abstract:A literature review was conducted in order to identify various parameters underlying listening comprehension. The results of this review were used as a basis for a survey of faculty in six graduate fields as well as undergraduate English faculty. The purpose of the survey was to a) obtain faculty perceptions of the importance to academic success of various listening skills and activities, b) assess the degree to which both native and non-native speakers experience difficulties with these skills or activities, and c) determine faculty views of alternative means of evaluating these skills. Faculty perceived some listening skills as more important than others for academic success. These included nine skills in particular that were related primarily to various aspects of lecture content (e.g. identifying major ideas and relationships among them). As might be expected, faculty perceived that non- native students experience more difficulty than native students with all listening activities, and that non-native students have disproportionately greater difficulty with some activities, such as following lectures given at different speeds and comprehending or deducing the meaning of important vocabulary. With respect to measuring listening comprehension, some general approaches and specific item types were judged to be more appropriate than others. These included tasks that entail answering questions involving the recall of details as well as those involving inference or deductions. The results of the survey are used to suggest further research on the construct validity of the Listening Comprehension section of the TOEFL.

Abstract:Broadly listening, non-English major students encounter bigger difficulties in learning English because they have a shorter time indirectly contacting or using the language. An important factor that should be taken into consideration is the use of appropriate authentic listening materials in the classroom. The objectives of the research were aimed to investigate whether there is a significant difference in students' listening comprehension using audio media versus video media and to determine which of these media is effective in enhancing students' listening comprehension. This research used a quantitative method with a quasi-experimental design. It was conducted in two classes of first-grade students of State Polytechnic of Agriculture Samarinda as non-English major college students. The classes comprised class PPIIA as the experimental group using audio and PPIIB as the control group using video. The researchers used pre-test and post-test designs to collect the data. The result of the data revealed that there was a significant difference between students' listening comprehension using audio media versus video media. Teaching listening using video is more effective in enhancing students' listening comprehension because video can provide visually attractive and enjoyable listening practice for students in the classroom.

Abstract:The study used MALQ developed by Vandergrift et al. (2006), an interview and a listening comprehension test to investigate non-English majors’ metacognitive awareness in English listening and the relationship between metacognitive awareness and listening comprehension performance. The results revealed a lack of metacognitive awareness in the subjects and a significant discrepancy between good listeners and poor listeners. Since metacognitive awareness is proved to influence listening comprehension in a positive way, teachers are suggested to develop students’ autonomous learning ability from this perspective and establish learner-centered listening teaching mode.

Abstract:This paper conducts an in-depth analysis of the issues present in current high school English listening and speaking classes and proposes corresponding improvements. Firstly, it identifies the challenges faced by high school English listening and speaking instruction, including inadequate emphasis on training listening and speaking skills by teachers, lack of operational and measurable course objectives, monotonous forms of activity organization, limitations in the use of listening materials and tools, weak connections between introductory segments and thematic content, failure to understand listening and speaking discourse based on thematic significance, neglect of teaching learning strategies, absence of learning activities in authentic contexts, and singular evaluation methods. Subsequently, a series of suggestions for enhancing teaching quality and efficiency are put forward, such as designing instruction around thematic contexts that integrate listening, speaking, reading, viewing, and writing skills; fostering the development of students’ core competencies, particularly language ability and cultural awareness; conducting comprehensive, interconnected, and practical learning activities; utilizing modern information technology to create a culturally rich learning environment; and implementing formative and multifaceted evaluation mechanisms. These improvement measures aim to enhance students’ listening and speaking abilities and cultivate them as lifelong learners with good listening and speaking habits.

Abstract:In the context of the integration of China’s international economic development, the country has an increasing demand for high-level English professionals. Therefore, schools need to strengthen the teaching of students’ English learning and improve students’ comprehensive English ability. College English listening course is an important course to cultivate students’ English skills. Improving the teaching effect of college English listening course has become an urgent problem in English teaching. With the development of China’s network technology and education reform, a brand-new three-dimensional virtual immersive environment teaching model has emerged. This teaching model is of great help to students in learning English. This paper applies immersion theory to college English listening teaching, using virtual reality technology to create a three-dimensional virtual immersive environment for English listening teaching and using this new environment to promote English listening teaching, stimulate students’ interest in English learning, and improve students’ English. The ability of listening comprehensively improves the efficiency of English listening teaching, thereby making college English listening lessons lively and interesting and rich in information, and helps students have an immersive experience, so as to cultivate students’ interest in learning, form learning motivation, and ultimately achieve the goal of improving their English proficiency. The method proposed in this article organically integrates the teaching, learning, and evaluation of English listening. First of all, it can evaluate the attribute grasping mode and its advantages and disadvantages of groups and individuals in the process of listening and cognition. Relying on the network, it can also provide real-time networked diagnosis reports and targeted guidance. Secondly, teachers can discover the characteristics and needs of individuals and groups based on the diagnosis results, adjust and optimize their own teaching methods, and truly teach students in accordance with their aptitude. More importantly, students can find problems through self-diagnosis and obtain effective guidance and intervention, which finally help them to move towards autonomous learning. This is also the ultimate goal of modern English education. From this perspective, this research also helps to open up new directions for future English research.
