Abstract:Detachable and degradable polymeric adhesives have demonstrated considerable value and significance, accompanying the increasing demands for waste recycling and the ongoing concern for green and sustainable development. Herein, a chain extender containing the bis(cyclohexanone) oxalyldihydrazone structure was introduced into polyurethanes, which achieved efficient degradation in an alkaline environment with the M w decreasing from 41.9 to 4.9 kDa. The shear strength of the linear polyurethane between polycarbonate specimens reduced by 98.5%, and on a wide range of substrates, the shear strength of both linear and cross-linked polyurethanes reduced by more than 65.0% as a joint result of the base and cosolvent. These degradable polyurethanes with adhesion properties have exhibited great potential to be used in the separation of multilayer flexible packaging, electronics assembly, and battery pack recycling.

Abstract:Photocrosslinkable and water soluble hyperbranched PEG-polyester polymers (HPEGDA) have been developed as robust degradable adhesives. The HPEGDA polymers have been synthesized from controlled homopolymerization of poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA 700) via in situ deactivation enhanced atom transfer radical polymerization (DE-ATRP). By introducing a high initiator-to-monomer ratio, the obtained HPEGDA polymer is composed of extremely short carbon-carbon backbones interconnected together by the long PEG chains as well as pendent photocrosslinkable acrylate moieties. Due to the extremely short C-C backbone, the long PEG chains can therefore be seen as the main chain, thus, HPEGDA polymers behave more like polyester which is a category of polymers that contain the ester functional group in their main chain. Photo-cured HPEGDA can be readily adhered to tissue forming a patch with robust mechanical and adhesive strengths. The degradation profile by hydrolysis of polyester blocks as well as a significantly low swelling ratio of HPEGDA gels in an aqueous environment allow them to have great potential for sealing and repair of internal tissue. Furthermore, HPEGDA gels appear to have minor significant cytotoxicity in vitro. These unique properties indicate that the reported HPEGDA polymers are well poised for the development of adhesive tissue engineering matrixes, wound dressings, and sealants.

Abstract:To address the issues that waste of resources and environmental pollution caused by discarded materials, dynamic bonds are widely introduced into polymers to endow them with reprocess ability. However, there are some obvious issues in existing research such as poor toughness, low fracture elongation, and inability for repeated reprocessing of materials. Considering above problems, this study introduces dense hydrogen bonding and cation–π interactions into the polyurea system, and develops a high‐performance transparent film based on dual dynamic non‐covalent interactions, which enables the film to be reprocessed. Through the synergy of the dual non‐covalent networks, the film exhibits a high tensile strength of 79.6 ± 3.9 MPa and good hardness (pencil hardness of 4H, elastic modulus of 2.69 GPa). It can effectively resist the scratching of copper brush and maintain more than 97% of its initial mechanical strength after being reprocessed five times. In addition, the film has good adhesion to various substrates, as well as high flexibility (0.5 mm) and excellent optical properties (high light transmission of 91.1% and low haze of 0.94%). This study proposes a novel approach to enable polymer materials to be reprocessed and demonstrates the preparation of a film with great potential in optical protection and wearable devices.

Biodegradable, anti-adhesive and tough polyurethane hydrogels crosslinked by triol crosslinkers

Abstract:The mechanical and biodegradable properties of hydrogels are two essential properties for practical biomaterial applications. In this work, a series of biodegradable polyurethane (PU) hydrogels were successfully synthesized using two kinds of triol crosslinkers with different chain structures. One crosslinker is normal glycerol (GC) with short chain length, and the other is biodegradable poly (ε-caprolactone)-triol (CAPA) with long chain length. All PU hydrogels showed considerable water uptake around ~60%, excellent strength (above 3 MPa), advisable modulus (0.9~1.7 MPa), high elasticity (above 700%), as well as good biodegradability and biocompatibility. Hydrogen bonds served as reversible sacrificial bonds in the PU hydrogels endow them good toughness with partial hysteresis during deformation. The biodegradable long chain crosslinker CAPA can certainly accelerate the degradation of PU hydrogels compared with the GC crosslinked hydrogels. The degradation of these hydrogels was a process of continuous erosion from the surface to interior, which contributes to the high remain of mechanical properties after 30 days-degradation. Besides, the hydrogels also show excellent antifouling ability of protein and anti-adhesion of cells. Therefore, these hydrogels suggest great potential used as biological anti-adhesive membranes or catheters.

A Self-repairing Transparent Film with Reprocessable, Ultra-High Strength and Outstanding Elasticity Based on Interlocking Hydrogen Bonds and Reversible Topological Networks

Abstract:Achieving robust, high elasticity, transparency, self-repairing, reprocessability and durability simultaneously remains a huge challenge. In this work, we propose a simple strategy to prepare an ultra-high strength, outstanding elasticity, self-repairing and reprocessable poly (thiourethane-urea) (PTUU) film based on interlocking hydrogen bonds (IHBs) and reversible topological networks. The IHBs between its main chains make it have ultra-high tensile strength (61.6 MPa) and good scratch resistance. It is the highest tensile strength ever recorded for crosslinked self-repairing materials at medium temperature thus far. The synergistic effect of IHBs and topological networks makes it high elasticity and can repair more than 90 % of the mechanical strength. Rearrangement of reversible topology network at high temperature endows PTUU with reprocessability, and the mechanical strength remains more than 85 % after reprocessing for three times. In addition, PTUU films have high transmittance (96.6 %, 0.5 mm), low haze, high refractive index and excellent durability, which have broad application prospects in transparent protective materials, optical lenses, stretchable fibers, wearable electronic devices and other fields.

Abstract:Biofilms are initially caused by substances such as proteins secreted by bacteria adhering to a surface. To achieve durable antibacterial material, biodegradable dihydroxyl-terminated poly[(ethylene oxide)-co-(ethylene carbonate)] (PEOC(OH)2) with anti-protein adsorption properties was synthesized in this study. Further polycondensation of PEOC(OH)2 and isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI) led to biodegradable polyurethane (PEOC-PU) with PEOC as the soft segment. For comparison, polyurethanes with polyethylene glycol (PEG-PU) or polypropylene glycol (PPG-PU) as soft segments were also synthesized. The chemical structures of the polyurethanes were characterized by 1HNMR and FTIR. The biodegradation behavior of PEOC-PU promoted by lipase due to the presence of ethylene carbonate units was also studied. Their resistance to proteins was studied using quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM-D) and the results revealed that PEOC-PU exhibited excellent nonspecific resistance to proteins. The colonization of microorganisms on PU in liquid culture medium was further examined and the results showed that PEOC-PU exhibited excellent antibacterial adhesion performance due to its protein resistance and biodegradation.

Abstract:Postoperative adhesions commonly form in various tissues, resulting in serious implications and an increased risk of secondary surgery. The application of anti-adhesion films as physical barriers has proven effective in reducing adhesion incidence and severity. However, existing anti-adhesion films require manual deployment during minimally invasive surgery, posing inconvenience and possibility of further injury. To address these limitations, we have developed an intelligent anti-adhesion film based on shape memory polyurethane. In this work, a linear shape memory polyurethane (ISO2-PU), incorporating hexamethylene isocyanate and isosorbitol as hard segments and poly(D, L-lactic acid) macrodiol as soft segments, was fabricated into an anti-adhesion film. The favorable shape memory effect of the ISO2-PU film ensures its convenient delivery and automatic unfolding, as revealed by a simulation experiment for endoscopic surgical implantation. Furthermore, the glass transition temperature ( T g ) close to body temperature endows the ISO2-PU film with good mechanical compliance, thus ensuring a reliable fit with the wounded tissue to avoid undesired folding. Finally, in vivo experiments using a rat cecal abdominal wall injury model demonstrated that the combination of reliable fit, appropriate degradation rate, and good cytocompatibility promises the ISO2-PU film with high anti-adhesion efficacy. This work validates the concept of shape memory anti-adhesion barrier and expands future directions for advanced anti-adhesion biomaterials. Statement of significance Postoperative adhesions are a common complication that occurs widely after various surgeries. This work developed an intelligent anti-adhesion film based on a linear shape memory polyurethane (ISO2-PU). This film is featured with remarkable shape memory effect and mechanical compliance at body temperature, appropriate degradability, and good cytocompatibility. These merits ensure convenient delivery and smart unfolding of ISO2-PU film during minimally invasive surgery and favorable postoperative anti-adhesion efficacy. The results validate the concept of shape memory anti-adhesion barrier and paves a way for designing next-generation anti-adhesion biomaterials.

Abstract:With increasingly strict requirements for environmental protection, degradable adhesives are urgently required to enable recycling challenge. In this paper, an aromatic chain extender, Fmoc-BHA, which can undergo 1,4-elimination under alkaline conditions, and polyurethane adhesives, which readily decompose after deprotection, are synthesized. The molecular weight of the degradable polyurethane decreased from 6.5 x 10(4) to 1.1 x 10(4) g/mol after alkaline treatment. The process and mechanism of degradation was studied by nuclear magnetic resonance, Fourier transform infrared, and gel permeation chromatography. The evolution of bond shear strength under different alkaline conditions was tested; the results showed the practicality of using a degradable polyurethane laminating adhesive to enable film detachment.
Study on the Poly(3‐hydroxybutyrate‐co−4‐hydroxybutyrate)‐based Composites Toughened by Synthesized Polyester Polyurethane Elastomer

Abstract:ABSTRACTIn this study, polycaprolactone(PCL)‐based polyurethane (PU) elastomer containing 45 wt % hard segment component was synthesized and characterized by fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, gel permeation chromatography, and X‐ray diffraction. As a toughening agent, the as‐synthesized PU was incorporated into biodegradable poly(3‐hydroxybutyrate‐co‐4‐hydroxybutyrate) [P(3,4)HB] by solution casting to prepare P(3,4)HB/PU composites. The microstructure and properties of P(3,4)HB/PU composites were investigated using transmission electron microscopy, X‐ray diffraction, tensile testing, scanning electron microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, and activated sludge degradation testing. The results show that PU can disperse well in a P(3,4)HB matrix. The elongation at break of P(3,4)HB/PU composites is remarkably increased while the yield strength and elastic modulus are decreased with an increase in PU content. At the same time, it is found that the fracture characteristic of P(3,4)HB is obviously transformed from brittleness into ductility with a gradual increase in PU loading. Moreover, the thermal stability of P(3,4)HB/PU composites is significantly improved compared with that of pure P(3,4)HB. In addition, the biodegradation rate of P(3,4)HB/PU composites is evidently reduced with the increase of PU content in the activated sludge degradation testing. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Abstract:In this work, a degradable polyurethane composed of caprolactone (CL) and L-Lactide (LLA) as soft segments, and 4,4'-methylenebis(cyclohexyl isocyanate) (H12MDI) and polytetramethylene ether glycol (PTMEG) as hard segments, was prepared. Hydrolytic degradation experiment revealed that the degradable polyurethane (PU) could be degraded in artificial seawater. It also showed that caprolactone-co-polyurethane (CL-PU) copolymer with higher crystallinity degraded much slower in artificial seawater. However, the introduction of LLA resulted in an increase in the hydrophilicity and reduction in the crystallinity of degradable PU, as demonstrated by the contact angle analysis. The result of the scanning electron microscope showed that the surface of degradable PU renewed under static condition. Moreover, degradable PU was able to be used as a carrier, and it controlled the release rate of 4, 5-dichloro-2-octyl-isothiazolone (DCOIT). The anti-diatom (Navicula incerta) test demonstrated that the (caprolactone-co-L-lactide)-co-polyurethane 4 (CL/LAx-PU4) with DCOIT contents prevented the adhesion of diatom Navicula incerta (88.37 % reduction) due to their self-polishing and the release of antifoulants. Therefore, the degradable PU consisted of CL, LLA, and DCOIT could be a durable resin with good antifouling activity for the application in the marine anti-biofouling field.

Synthesis and Performance of Novel Modified Polycaprolactone Polyurethane Elastomers

Abstract:Polycaprolactone( PCL) is a kind of excellent histocompatible and biodegradable materials due to the presence of amounts of esters that can be hydrolyzed by water or enzyme, which made PCL as one of Pure Food and Drug Administration ( FDA ) certified medical materials. However, the high crystallinity and poor hydrophility of polycaprolactone induce slow biodegradation rate, poor tenacity and fatigue durability although it has high mechanical strength. Therefore, modification on polycaprolactone was necessary. Herein, we used isocyanates[hexamethylene diisocyanate(HDI) and isophorone diisocyanate(IPDI)] to modify polycaprolac?tone and the phosphorylated prepolymers were reacted with bifunctional epoxy to form crosslinked and biode?gradable elastomers. The test and analysis of mechanical properties, water contact angle, degradation/swelling and cell cytotoxicity in vitro indicated that the introduction of isocyanate helped to improve flexibility, fatigue resistance and degradation rate of the elastomers with no increased cytotoxicity.

Abstract:ABSTRACTThe segmented polyurethanes synthesized from biodegradable polyesters are very promising and widely applicable because of their excellent physiochemical properties. Poly(propylene fumarate) (PPF), a kind of linear aliphatic unsaturated and biodegradable polyesters, has been well recognized in biomedical applications. Herein novel polyurethanes (PPFUs) were synthesized based on the PPF‐diol, diisocyanates such as 1,6‐diisocyanatohexane, l‐lysine diisocyanate, and dicyclohexylmethane diisocyanate, and chain extenders such as 1,4‐butylene glycol and l‐lysine methyl ester hydrochloride (Lys‐OMe·2HCl). By varying the types of diisocyanates, and chain extenders, and the proportion of hard segments, the PPFUs with tailored properties such as mechanical strength and degradation rate were easily obtained. The synthesized PPFUs had an amorphous structure and slight phase separation with strong hydrogen bonding between the soft segments and the hard segments. The elongation of PPFU elastomers reached over 400% with a slow deformation‐recovery ability. The PPFUs were more sensitive to alkaline (5 M, NaOH) hydrolysis than acid (2 M, HCl) and oxidative (30 vol.%, H2O2) erosion. The tensile strength, deformation‐recovery ability, and glass transition temperature of the PPFUs were improved with the increase of hard segment proportion, while the degradation rate was opposite because of the faster degradation of the soft segments. In vitro culture of smooth muscle cells in the extractant of the PPFUs or on the PPFUs film surface revealed low cytotoxicity and good cytocompatibility in terms of cell viability, adhesion, and proliferation. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Synthesis and properties of biodegradable poly(ester-urethane)s based on poly(ε-caprolactone) and aliphatic diurethane diisocyanate for long-term implant application: effect of uniform-size hard segment content

Abstract:In this article, a series of medical poly(ester-urethane)s (PEUs) with varying uniform-size hard segment content were prepared via one-step chain extension of poly(ε-caprolactone)s with aliphatic urethane diisocyanate, and the corresponding films were obtained by solvent evaporation technique. The chemical structures of polymers were confirmed by 1H NMR, FT-IR and GPC. The effect of uniform-size hard segment content on the physicochemical properties of PEU films, including thermal properties, mechanical properties, crystallization behavior, water-swelling behavior and in vitro degradability, was extensively researched. The PEU films exhibiting similar thermal transition and thermal stability indicated that the uniform-size hard segment content had little effect on the thermal properties. Two obvious glass transition temperatures observed in DSC curves manifested a microphase separation structure, which endowed the PEU films excellent mechanical properties with ultimate stress of 34.6–51.2 MPa and strain at break of 898–1485%. And with the increase of uniform-size hard segment content, the initial modulus and ultimate stress increased, while the strain at break decreased. Due to the compact physical-linking network structure formed by the denser hydrogen bonds, the PEU films exhibited low water-swellability of less than 1.5 wt% and low degradation rate in vitro. The weight loss of the PEU films in degradation test was less than 1 wt% at the first four months and the time of films becoming fragments was more than 15 months. Cytotoxicity test of film extracts was conducted with L929 mouse fibroblasts, and the relative growth rate approached or exceeded 75%, indicating an acceptable cytocompatibility. For the excellent mechanical properties, slow biodegradability, non-toxic degradation products and adequate cytocompatibility, the PEUs containing uniform-size hard segments possess a high potential to be applied as long-term implant biomaterials.
High transparency, degradable and UV-protective poly(lactic acid) composites based on elongational rheology and chain extender assisted melt blending

Abstract:Conventional polylactic acid (PLA) melt plasticization and toughening processes are typically achieved at the expense of PLA strength and transparency, which is clearly detrimental to its application in areas such as smart home and food packaging. Herein, an ultraviolet (UV)-protective PLA-based composite (PP6) that simultaneously achieves high strength (63.3 MPa), high plasticity (125.3 %), and enhanced toughness (4.3 kJ/m2) by adding only 6 wt% poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-4-hydroxybutyrate) (P34HB) under the assist of 1 wt% chain extender was prepared using melt blending technique. Benefiting from the cross-linking effect of the chain extender and the elongational flow during processing, the compatibility between P34HB and PLA, as well as the thermomechanical properties, heat resistance, and biodegradable properties of the composite, have been enhanced significantly. The extremely low melt enthalpy (1.9 J/g) and the low crystallinity PLA phase contribute to an appropriate transparency (78.3 % of glass in 400-1100 nm). The prepared composites display mid- and long-wave UV-protective performance, which is superior to conventional industrial glasses. Through the superior elongational rheology technology, PP6 maintains favorable overall properties even after six thermomechanical cycles. Collectively, the composite fabricated in this work is an attractive candidate for future applications such as smart windows, food packaging, agricultural films, and biomedical applications.
Healable and degradable bifunctional intrinsic polymers via integration of hierarchical hydrogen bonding groups and polycaprolactone segments

Abstract:The development of a single polymer chain with the dual functions of self‐healing and degradation is challenging. Herein, we report the synthesis of self‐healing and degradable polymers (SDP) via the integration of hierarchical hydrogen bonding groups and degradable polycaprolactone (PCL) segments. The dynamic reconstruction of hierarchical hydrogen bonding endowed the as‐prepared polymers with excellent self‐healing properties. The degradation properties were regulated via the proportion of PCL in the soft segments. The incorporation of PCL segments resulted in better degradability and improved the tensile strength of the polymer from 9.2 to 28.3 MPa. The as‐prepared polymers could recover their mechanical properties after self‐healing. The temperature‐dependent Fourier‐transform infrared spectra (FT‐IR) indicated that the hierarchical hydrogen bonding was capable of dissociation and re‐association with a variation in the temperature. The as‐synthesized sustainable polymers, which exhibit self‐healing properties and degradability, are expected to be useful in future energy and environmental applications.
