Abstract:This article explores the relationship between pyramid scheme participation and internet search activity, using a case study of a shuttered pyramid scheme in the United States. Comparing results against the Bass diffusion model, we estimate the relationship between monthly pyramid scheme uptake at the state level and the search frequency of key terms in that state (e.g. the scheme name). Using monthly data from 2004 to 2013, we find evidence that Google Trends data can be an effective complement to other fraud detection methods at the state level. This tool is especially useful in situations where consumer complaints are rare, and it is difficult to detect or measure the level of scheme activity.
