Abstract:In the context of global climate change, lightning disasters have emerged as a serious environmental factor that restricts the sustainable development of megacities. This paper provides a review of the research on the impact of urbanization on thunderstorm processes and lightning activity, exploring various aspects, such as aerosols, urban thermal effects, urban dynamic effects, and building morphology. Despite numerous significant achievements in the study of the impact of air pollutants on lightning activity, there is no consensus on whether aerosols serve to enhance or inhibit lightning activity. The temperature difference between the urban underlying surface and the natural underlying surface could sustain and promote the occurrence and development of convective systems, thus enhancing lightning activity. In terms of urban dynamics, the barrier effect has led to the maximum center of lightning appearing at the edge of a built-up area, which might be associated with factors, such as urban heat island (UHI) intensity, wind speed, synoptic background, and city size. Additionally, the size of a city and the height of the buildings was also an influencing factor on lightning activity. In summary, scholars have made progress in understanding the characteristics and drivers of urban lightning activity in recent years, but there are still some urgent problems that need to be solved: (1) How to analyze, comprehensively, the spatiotemporal patterns of urban lightning activity under different thunderstorm intensity backgrounds? (2) How to conduct analysis to investigate the influence of alterations in the boundary layer structure, water–heat energy balance, and water vapor circulation processes on urban lightning activity in the context of urbanization? (3) How to couple numerical models of different scales to enhance the understanding of the impact of complex underlying surfaces on urban lightning activity? Future studies could investigate the relationship between urbanization and thunderstorm/lightning activity using a combination of observational data, numerical modeling, and laboratory experiments, which holds promise for providing valuable theoretical insights and technical support to enhance the prediction, nowcasting, early warning, and risk assessment of thunderstorms and lightning in urban areas.

Abstract:Lightning has profound social implications for public safety and usually causes casualties and significant damage to infrastructure. Due to the advancement of both ground-based and spaceborne detection technology, lightning has been monitored globally in recent decades as an essential vari¬able of climate change and an indicator of severe weather. This article reviews recent progress in the study of lightning variations and their response to temperature and aerosols, based on both spaceborne and ground-based lightning data. The responses of lightning to temperature and aerosol show large spatial and temporal heterogeneity, with relation to the meteorological and environmental conditions. The latest research show that lightning exhibited significant increase in some high altitude or high latitude regions, such as the Tibetan Plateau and Arctic regions, where undergone fast warming during the recent decades and the ecosystems there is fragile. Aerosol particles play an important role in modulating lightning variations under certain dynamical and thermodynamic conditions in some regions, even on a global scale. The projected lightning activity will generally increase in the future but may with very few exceptions. Continuous long-term lightning observations with consistent spatial and temporal detection efficiency remain crucial for tracking the response of lightning to climate change in the coming decades.

Abstract:Urbanization effects on rainfall induced by landfalling tropical cyclones have rarely been studied. Here high-resolution numerical simulations with the Weather Research and Forecasting/Noah/single-layer urban canopy model system (WRF/SLUCM) are conducted to investigate impacts of urban land cover and building heights on heavy rainfall induced by landfalling Typhoon Lekima (2019) over the megacity Shanghai. The default single urban category in WRF was updated to a new land cover data with three urban categories. Results indicate that WRF/SLUCM captures the typhoon intensity, track, and total rainfall amount quite well. Urbanization has a small positive effect on rainfall amount for this event. However, urbanization has a significant impact on the spatial distribution of the accumulated rainfall with enhancement not confined over the urban area but mainly to the southwest of Shanghai possibly due to the changes of the typhoon tracks. With the impact of Typhoon Lekima, the urban heat island disappears, indicating that the thermal effect of urbanization has limited influence on the rainfall processes. The model performance is very sensitive to the building height. More realistic building height values can noticeably improve simulations of the diurnal patterns of rainfall, urban heat island, and the urban wind speed stilling effect. With the rising of building heights, the surface frictional dynamic effect and vertical uplift is enhanced, but seems not enough to evidently intensify the rainfall. The simulated lower-level large moisture flux convergence corresponds well to rainfall peaks. This study has important scientific significance for the accuracy of rainfall forecasts of landfalling typhoons and disaster mitigation in cities.
The effect of ground altitude on lightning striking distance based on a bi-directional leader model

Abstract:The effect of ground altitude on lightning striking distance has been investigated based on a bi-directional leader model. The model, which is a development of that proposed originally by Mazur and Ruhnke in 1998, enables the calculation of leader channel parameters, such as leader charge density, leader current, leader potential, and lightning striking distance to flat ground. In the model, the lightning striking distance is directly related to the critical electric field in the negative streamer zone in front of the leader tip and to the leader potential. The former may vary with the ground altitude above sea level and the latter may also be affected by it. Based on this thought and on the bi-directional leader model, the effect of regional ground altitude on lightning striking distance was investigated. The result shows that the striking distance increases significantly as the ground altitude increases. This is because the critical electric field necessary for sustaining the negative streamer zone decreases as the ground altitude increases. The result is useful to both physical and engineering application.
Temporal and spatial characteristics of lightning activity versus terrain in Hong Kong

Abstract:The temporal and spatial characteristics of lightning activities across Hong Kong, a mountainous metropolis surrounded by sea, has been studied. Over 0.32 million of cloud-to- ground (CG) and intra-cloud (IC) flashes reported by Hong Kong Lightning Location Network during 2005 to 2008 were analyzed. Seasonal variations show that although the lightning activity in summer is the strongest, the ratio of positive CG in summer is smaller than that in other seasons. The lightning occurrence is highly related to the underlying surface conditions. The density of negative CG increases as the surface terrain rises, with the highest density is convergent to the main mountain peak areas. Whilst the density of positive CG is inversely proportional to the surface terrain elevation, with the highest density is clustered in a broad area in valleys or mountain foots. Such characteristics of CG may be attributed to the effect of mountain terrain elevation on the air flow and hence the convection in clouds. In addition, the average current of CG flashes in urban regions is obviously stronger than that in other regions, probably due to the plenty of aerosols / pollutants in air in the urban areas. The average current of both CG and IC flashes in the sea is larger than that in the land except the city and mountain areas, probably due to the small attenuation of electric fields propagating over sea water.
Enhancement of Cloud-to-Ground Lightning Activity Caused by the Urban Effect: A Case Study in the Beijing Metropolitan Area

Abstract:To investigate the possible impact of urban development on lightning activity, an eight-year (2010–2017) cloud-to-ground (CG) lightning dataset provided by the National-Wide Lightning Detection Network in China was analyzed to characterize the CG lightning activity in the metropolitan area of Beijing. There is a high CG flash density area over the downtown of Beijing, but different from previous studies, the downwind area of Beijing is not significantly enhanced. Compared with the upwind area, the CG flash density in the downtown area was enhanced by about 50%. Negative CG flashes mainly occurred in the downtown and industrial area, while positive CG flashes were distributed evenly. The percentage of positive CG flashes with Ipeak ≥ 75 kA is more than six times that of the corresponding negative CG flashes in the Beijing area. The enhancement of lightning activity varies with season and time. About 98% of CG flashes occurred from May to September, and the peak of CG diurnal variation is from 1900 to 2100 local time. Based on the analysis of thunderstorm types in Beijing, it is considered that the abnormal lightning activity is mainly responsible for an enhancement of the discharge number in frontal systems rather than the increase of the number of local thunderstorms. In addition, there is a non-linear relationship between pollutant concentrations and CG flash number, which indicates that there are other critical factors affecting the production of lightning.

Abstract:The effect of aerosols on lightning has been noted in many studies, but much less is known about the long-term impacts in air-polluted urban areas of China. In this paper, 9-year data sets of cloud-to-ground (CG) lightning, aerosol optical depth (AOD), convective available potential energy (CAPE), and surface relative humidity (SRH) from ground-based observation and model reanalysis are analyzed over three air-polluted urban areas of China. Decreasing trends are found in the interannual variations of CG lightning density (unit: flashes km−2day−1) and total AOD over the three study regions during the study period. An apparent enhancement in CG lightning density is found under conditions with high AOD on the seasonal cycles over the three study regions. The joint effects of total AOD and thermodynamic factors (CAPE and SRH) on CG lightning density and the percentage of positive CG flashes (+CG flashes/total CG flashes × 100; PPCG; unit: %) are further analyzed. Results show that CG lighting density is higher under conditions with high total AOD, while PPCG is lower under conditions with low total AOD. CG lightning density is more sensitive to CAPE under conditions with high total AOD.

Abstract:Latest research results on the correlation between lightning activity and climate and climate change are reviewed. The results indicate that global lightning can be measured by using satellite optical sensor, Schumann resonances, and the time-of-arrival (TOA) techniques at very low frequency. It is observed that high lightning density areas mainly lie in seaboards, mountains, high frequency mesoscale cyclone areas, and convergent regions such as the intertropical convergence zone. Eighty-eight percent of global lightning discharges occurs in continent island and seaboard areas. The three regions hit most frequently by lightning are Congo in equatorial Africa, South America, and South and Southeast Asia. A lot of studies reveal that the global lightning activity is directly related to the earth's climate and climate change. The global lightning activity responds positively to temperature changes on many time scales, such as diurnal, pentad, intraseasonal, semiannual, annual, ENSO, and decadal time scales. However, the sensitivity of lightning to temperature changes appears to diminish at longer time scales. Since lightning can be monitored easily and continuously, it becomes a useful and important parameter for monitoring climate change. The lightning discharge is a significant producing source of nitrogen oxides (NOx) in the atmosphere, which is closely associated with ozone production and the earth's radiation balance. There exists a robust positive correlation between lightning activity and upper tropospheric water vapor on short time scales. The effect of aerosol on thunderstorm and lightning is uncertain. More observations and investigations are needed to identify the coupling mechanism between lightning and climate change.

Abstract:Urbanization extensively modifies surface roughness and properties, impacting regional climate and hydrological cycles. Urban effects on temperature and precipitation have drawn considerable attention. These associated physical processes are also closely linked to clouds’ formation and dynamics. Cloud is one of the critical components in regulating urban hydrometeorological cycles but remains less understood in urban-atmospheric systems. We analyzed satellite-derived cloud patterns spanning two decades over 447 US cities and quantified the urban-influenced cloud patterns diurnally and seasonally. The systematic assessment suggests that most cities experience enhanced daytime cloud cover in both summer and winter; nocturnal cloud enhancement prevails in summer by 5.8%, while there is modest cloud suppression in winter nights. Statistically linking the cloud patterns with city properties, geographic locations, and climate backgrounds, we found that larger city size and stronger surface heating are primarily responsible for summer local cloud enhancement diurnally. Moisture and energy background control the urban cloud cover anomalies seasonally. Under strong mesoscale circulations induced by terrains and land–water contrasts, urban clouds exhibit considerable nighttime enhancement during warm seasons, which is relevant to strong urban surface heating interacting with these circulations, but other local and climate impacts remain complicated and inconclusive. Our research unveils extensive urban influences on local cloud patterns, but the effects are diverse depending on time, location, and city properties. The comprehensive observational study on urban–cloud interactions calls for more in-depth research on urban cloud life cycles and their radiative and hydrologic implications under the urban warming context.

Abstract:Abstract Urban environments lie at the confluence of social, cultural, and economic activities and have unique biophysical characteristics due to continued infrastructure development that generally replaces natural landscapes with built-up structures. The vast majority of studies on urban perturbation of local weather and climate have been centered on the urban heat island (UHI) effect, referring to the higher temperature in cities compared to their natural surroundings. Besides the UHI effect and heat waves, urbanization also impacts atmospheric moisture, wind, boundary layer structure, cloud formation, dispersion of air pollutants, precipitation, and storms. In this review article, we first introduce the datasets and methods used in studying urban areas and their impacts through both observation and modeling and then summarize the scientific insights on the impact of urbanization on various aspects of regional climate and extreme weather based on more than 500 studies. We also highlight the major research gaps and challenges in our understanding of the impacts of urbanization and provide our perspective and recommendations for future research priorities and directions.

Short-Term Lightning Response to Ground Level Enhancements

Abstract:Cosmic rays (CRs) are considered the primary energetic particle source of atmospheric ionization on Earth. Under the modulation of severe solar eruption events, CR variations are further speculated to impact the Earth's lightning activities. Previous researches show that CR intensity and lightning incidence are positively correlated on the time scale of several days to decades. However, to our knowledge, the global lightning response to short-term CR variation has not been studied in the literature. Ground level enhancements (GLEs) provide the opportunity to study such a possible link. As a small fraction of solar energetic particle events that could reach the energy level of several GeVs, GLEs can thus generate atmospheric cascades that could be recorded by ground-based neutron monitors. Furthermore, as GLEs generally take place within several 10 min to an hour, the lightning variations caused by potential meteorological factors could be maximally diminished in such a short time. During the operational period of the World Wide Lightning Location Network (Aug 2004 to now), three typical GLEs with the intensity >15% are analyzed from the International GLE Database, namely #69 (Jan 20, 2005), #70 (Dec 13, 2006), and #71 (May 17, 2012). For each GLE event, the global lightning incidence presents a positive response to GLE (i.e., a significant enhancement within 20 min right after the GLE onset). Meanwhile, the relative amplitude of lightning response seems to be in direct proportion to GLE intensity (i.e., the more intensive the GLE is, the more obvious the increase in the lightning incidence is), which is further verified to be statistically significant by Monte Carlo test. By comparing lightning responses in different latitudinal zones, we find that more intensive lightning responses to GLEs seem to be at higher latitudes.

Abstract:Lightning and lightning induced effects have significant influence on many aspects affecting the public, which makes the research of lightning and lightning protection very important. However, due to the strong randomness and complex discharge mechanisms of lightning, the understanding of lightning is still far from satisfactory. On the basis of the International Conference on Lightning Protection 2014, this study gives a review of recent progress on lightning and lightning protection research covering the following aspects: lightning locating and observation, lightning physics, lightning electromagnetic transients, and lightning protection for various systems. The goals of this study are to give readers an overall introduction to the recent progress in lightning and lightning protection research, and to motivate them to conduct further studies to address the unsolved problems in lightning-related research.

Abstract:Lightning is a leading cause of natural disaster-related mortality in the Indian Subcontinent. Currently, there is a lack of observational evidence supporting the role of aerosol composition in modulating lightning intensity and trends in this region. In this study, we analyzed satellite and reanalysis datasets to examine the association between aerosol properties and lightning intensity over three contrasting geographic regions of Indian subcontinent during the premonsoon season (1998-2022). By comparing lightning and non-lightning days, we found a 0.1 unit increase in total aerosol optical depth specifically on lightning days in all three study areas. Additionally, we observed that the aerosol composition of a region influences convective activity. The presence of dust alongside fine aerosols acts as efficient ice nuclei, thereby stimulating lightning activity in all three regions. Therefore, considering aerosol composition together with local meteorology is essential for accurately predicting lightning flash rates in a region.

Abstract:The urban underlying surface may affect the thunderstorm process. However, current research on this phenomenon is still in its infancy. This paper aimed to analyze the influence of the urban underlying surface on the evolution of thunderstorm organization through ground observation and numerical simulation. The results indicated that when the thunderstorm system with strong synoptic conditions passed through the built-up area of Beijing, it exhibited obvious bifurcation and detour. The dynamic field of near-surface cold pools could serve as diagnostic indicators for understanding how the urban underlying surface affects the thunderstorm process. The large-scale compact-rise clusters in the city center could alter the movement direction and path of the cold pool outflow, thereby influencing the thunderstorm organization process. In addition to the spatial configuration of the building complex, the city size might also be an important factor influencing the thunderstorm process. This study might provide a fundamental foundation and technical support for predicting and assessing urban thunderstorm disasters.

Abstract:The effect of aerosols on lightning has been noted in many case studies, but much less is known about the long-term impact, relative importance of dynamics–thermodynamics versus aerosol, and any difference by different types of aerosols. Attempts are made to tackle all these factors, whose distinct roles are discovered by analyzing 11-year datasets of lightning, aerosol loading and composition, and dynamic–thermodynamic data from satellite and model reanalysis. Variations in the lightning rate are analyzed with respect to changes in dynamic–thermodynamic variables and indices such as the convective available potential energy (CAPE) and vertical wind shear. In general, lightning has strong diurnal and seasonal variations, peaking in the afternoon and during the summer. The lightning flash rate is much higher in moist central Africa than in dry northern Africa presumably because of the combined influences of surface heating, CAPE, relative humidity (RH), and aerosol type. In both regions, the lightning flash rate changes with aerosol optical depth (AOD) in a boomerang shape: first increasing with AOD, tailing off around AOD = 0.3, and then behaving differently, i.e., decreasing for dust and flattening for smoke aerosols. The deviation is arguably caused by the tangled influences of different thermodynamics (in particular humidity and CAPE) and aerosol type between the two regions. In northern Africa, the two branches of the opposite trends seem to echo the different dominant influences of the aerosol microphysical effect and the aerosol radiative effect that are more pronounced under low and high aerosol loading conditions, respectively. Under low-AOD conditions, the aerosol microphysical effect more likely invigorates deep convection. This may gradually yield to the suppression effect as AOD increases, leading to more and smaller cloud droplets that are highly susceptible to evaporation under the dry conditions of northern Africa. For smoke aerosols in moist central Africa, the aerosol invigoration effect can be sustained across the entire range of AOD by the high humidity and CAPE. This, plus a potential heating effect of the smoke layer, jointly offsets the suppression of convection due to the radiative cooling at the surface by smoke aerosols. Various analyses were done that tend to support this hypothesis.

Abstract:Lightning flash rate is strongly influenced by cloud microphysics, such as cloud ice properties, but this relationship is poorly constrained. Here we analyze 20 years of satellite-derived lightning flash rate data and cloud water data from the ERA-Interim reanalysis above continental and ocean regions at a global scale. We find a robust modified gamma function relationship between cloud ice fraction and lightning rate. Lightning rate increases initially with increasing cloud ice fraction in stratocumulus, liquid clouds. Maximum flash rates are reached at a critical cloud ice fraction value that is associated with high top, large optical thickness, deep convective clouds. Beyond the critical value, lightning rate decreases as the ice fraction increases to values representative of cirrus, ice clouds. We find consistent critical ice fraction values over continental and oceanic regions, respectively, with a lower value over the continent due to greater cloud thickness at similar cloud top height. We suggest that our findings may help improve the accuracy of lightning forecast and hazard prediction. Lightning rate varies non-linearly with cloud ice fraction and between ocean and continent regions due to differences in convection depth, according to analyses of 20-years of lightning observations and cloud water data.
FlashBench: A lightning nowcasting framework based on the hybrid deep learning and physics-based dynamical models

Abstract:Lightning strikes are a well-known danger, and are a leading cause of accidental fatality worldwide. Unfortunately, lightning hazards seldom make headlines in international media coverage because of their infrequency and the low number of casualties each incidence. According to readings from the TRMM LIS lightning sensor, thunderstorms are more common in the tropics while being extremely rare in the polar regions. To improve the precision of lightning forecasts, we develop a technique similar to LightNet's, with one key modification. We didn't just base our model off the results of preliminary numerical simulations; we also factored in the observed fields' time-dependent development. The effectiveness of the lightning forecast rose dramatically once this adjustment was made. The model was tested in a case study during a thunderstorm. Using lightning parameterization in the WRF model simulation, we compared the simulated fields. As the first of its type, this research has the potential to set the bar for how regional lightning predictions are conducted in the future because of its data-driven approach. In addition, we have built a cloud-based lightning forecast system based on Google Earth Engine. With this setup, lightning forecasts over West India may be made in real time, giving critically important information for the area.

Abstract:Urbanization is an important factor that may influence the formation and development of clouds and precipitation. In this study, we focus on studying the influence of urbanization on mesoscale convective systems (MCS) over the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) region in China under different synoptic conditions using a combination of radiosonde, meteorological station, and satellite observations. It demonstrates that synoptic forcing can be used to distinguish the effect of land cover and land use (LCLU) on MCS. When the synoptic‐scale forcing is weak, the urban heat island (UHI) is the main factor affecting the vertical development of clouds. The UHI decreases atmospheric stability and enhances horizontal convergence, invigorating clouds over and downwind of cities. On the other hand, when strong synoptic‐scale forcing is present, buildings in cities cause clouds to bifurcate upwind of cities, moving around them, primarily through their dynamic effects. The heights of cloud tops in central and downwind parts of cities thus drop. Using the Weather Research and Forecasting model simulations of different atmospheric forcings also demonstrate similar patterns around major urban areas. The joint analyses of observations and model simulations provide new insights into the net effects of urbanization on cloud systems.
