Abstract:China's carbon peaking and carbon neutrality goals present unique challenges and opportunities for industrial sectors. This study examines the impact of robotic technology on production efficiency in China's industrial sectors from 2006 to 2016. Using data from the International Federation of Robotics (IFR) and employing the Tobit model, the analysis focuses on labor efficiency (LE), capital efficiency (CE), energy efficiency (EE), and total factor efficiency (TFE). The study also considers immediate and lagged effects of robotic adoption, and conducts robustness checks using two-stage least squares (2SLS) and fixed effects (FE) models. Additionally, the study explores the mediating effects of labor efficiency, capital efficiency, and energy efficiency on total factor efficiency. The results reveal that robotic technology significantly improves all dimensions of production efficiency, with the most notable enhancements observed in labor efficiency. The study identifies both immediate and lagged effects of robots on efficiencies, indicating a growing contribution over time, particularly in high-tech industries. Mediation effect tests show that improvements in labor efficiency account for approximately 65.16% of the total effect on total factor efficiency, while capital efficiency and energy efficiency contribute 12.98% and 12%, respectively. These results highlight the indispensable role of robotic technologies in steering China's industrial sectors towards a more sustainable and efficient future, suggesting that policy frameworks and financial incentives should support robotic integration, particularly in high-tech industries.
