Abstract:Peter Newmark (1916-2011) was one of the representative figures in translation field of the English-speaking countries in the twentieth century. The paper mainly introduces Newmark’s viewpoints on translation theory, especially his basic principles of the Communicative Translation Theory, that is, the principle of receptor-oriented strategies, the principle of equivalence-expected effect as well as the principle of information accuracy. It is based on text type and language function to translate, which makes the translation smoother and clearer to the target language readers. In that case, it can reduce the understanding obstacles of the foreigners.

Abstract:This paper aims at facilitating translating practice by reinterpreting Peter Newmark’s theory from a different linguistic viewpoint blending with cultural factors. The research methods adopted in the paper include literature review, comparison and case study. Communicative translation and semantic translation are two major translation methods put forward by Peter Newmark in one of his masterpieces Approaches to Translation. Meanwhile, he classified the texts into three types according to their functions, namely, expressive, informative as well as vocative texts, and accordingly explored the adoption of ST or CT from the perspective of the dominant function of the text. However, the present paper takes a new look into the theory of ST and CT by analyzing them in terms of syntax, culture and pragmatics, which can shed some light on translating practice. The conclusion is that the combination and flexible use of both is the most ideal translation method.

Abstract:Peter Newmark’s translation theories have been widely used in translation application and have been attached a great deal of importance in the translation studies. This paper made an analytical review of Newmark’s communicative translation approach based on multiple texts in two articles at first. And the review finds that there are some inappropriate classifications between communicative translation approach and semantic translation approach in the two articles, as well as unsolvable and impracticable problems remained in translation practice despite the guidance of Newmark’s communicative translation approach. Based on process-oriented approach and result-oriented approach in pragmatic principle of Chinese and English translation by Wang Jianguo, this paper finds that these unsolvable and impracticable problems in practical translation may well have a reasonable explanation to go and have practical cognition guidance for translators. As a version of English to Chinese translated book implies, this paper further shows how process-oriented approach and result-oriented approach affect, and the orientation differences in pragmatic principle between two versions. Based on what has been analyzed, this paper concludes some translation methods in translation practice.

Abstract:Peter Newmark divides the functions of language into six categories,and according to this,he classifies six types of text.The purpose of translation is to express the different meaning of texts.Newmark has put forward eight methods of translation in which semantic translation and communicative translation are the core of his translation methodology.There is no corresponding relations between text types and translation methods and the selection of translation method is not simply decided by text types.It is necessary to understand the relations between text types and functions,text types and translation methods in the process of translation.

Abstract:The profound transformations in linguistics during the early 20th century contributed to great investment in linguistic theories and their applications in translation, whose theorizing problems were linked to the development that raised cognitive, linguistic and cultural issues. This relationship was reflected in Peter Newmark’s research, who founded the semantic and communicative approache. He built his translation theory on the idea of not isolating the transmissive act from communication. Newmark provided a definition of communicative translation as it seeks to influence its readers as much as possible with the effect on the readers of the ST. While the semantic translation attempts to convey the exact contextual meaning of the ST as the semantic and grammatical structures of the TL permitted. Translation is also adept in the era of globalization with its influence on the boundaries between many Nations and civilizations. It is a tool for unifying them, and one of the most important means of facilitating the deepening and expansion of people's views toward other cultures. We aim in our research to introduce Newmark's approach to translation, and the disclosure of the potentials it offers to establish a bridge of scientific, human and civilizational communication between academic research and societies. We will focus on defining the criteria and priorities proposed in analyzing texts to highlight how communicative translation makes on the target recipient an effect equivalent to the ST has on the source recipient. And how to achieve accurate communication and its extent by revealing what makes it possible to benefit from the mechanisms of discourse analysis.

A review of Western translation history reveals a rich diversity of translation thoughts and a multitude of distinctive translators. Among them, two influential figures in the Western translation world, Eugene Nida and Peter Newmark, introduced renowned concepts such as functional equivalence, communicative translation, and semantic translation. These scholars have extensively studied translation theory, contributing significantly to the flourishing development of Western translation circles. Abstract:Peter Newmark was a famous British translator and translation theorist. According to the type of text, he divided texts into expressive text, informative text, and vocative text in his first book Approaches to Translation, published in 1981 and formed the core concept of his translation thought, “semantic translation” and “communicative translation”. Based on semantic translation, communicative translation, and text typology, this paper tries to analyze the Chinese translation of the source text, The Art Of Loving(excerpts), written by Eric Fromm, a famous German-American psychologist, psychoanalyst and philosopher. Due to the psychology and critical thinking of the source text, the translator prefers to communicative translation and uses various translation methods and skills to reduce reading difficulties. This paper finds that any translation is a mixture of many theories, strategies, or methods. To some extent, in the process of translation, it inspires us to pay more attention to the use of translation theory, so that intuition and rationality can be combined, and closer to the essence of translation than the subconscious translation behaviors.

Abstract:Based on an analysis into the developemt of Newmark's translation theory, this paper is of opiniib that the method of literal translation and the method of free translation are a unity of opposites either of which can be dispensed with, Communicative translation, where transmission of information contained in the original is stressed, places meaning before form and thus favors free translation. Semantic translation, which attempts to cover the whole of the meaning in the original and at the same time retains the form of the original as much as possible, favors literal translation. Literal translation is the base, whereas the translation is an aid and a supplement to literal translation.

Abstract:The present research featured P. Newmark's translation strategy and procedures applied to the translation of metaphors in literary texts, namely Stephen King's oeuvre. The study revealed the effect of functional style on metaphor translation. The type of metaphor, e.g. dead, cliché, stock, adapted, recent, and original, also proved important for adequate translation. The authors performed a comparative and correlative analysis of metaphors in translations made by different authors. The study was based on descriptive, cognitive, semantic, and lexicographic methods. The general functional analysis revealed grammar and lexical transformations that metaphors undergo in the process of application of P. Newmark's translation strategy and procedures. The article focuses on the optimal ways of metaphor translation as described by P. Newmark. The translator can preserve the original image in the translated text, keep the original metaphor, replace the original image with a common one, render the metaphor using a figurative comparison while preserving the original image and notion explication, ignore the notion explication of the metaphor, or totally remove the image. The analysis proved the significance of P. Newmark's approach to metaphor translation and its methodological value for modern translation theory and practice. The results obtained can be applied both in professional translation and in corresponding disciplines.
