Abstract:Advances in software and hardware have promoted the use of computational chemistry in all branches of chemical research to probe important chemical concepts and to support experimentation. Consequently, it has become imperative that students in the modern undergraduate curriculum become adept at performing simple calculations using computational software, interpreting computational data, and applying computational data to explain chemical phenomena. We utilize computational chemistry in a high-enrollment (>1200 students/year), undergraduate organic chemistry laboratory course in a manner similar to that of organic chemistry researchers. We have employed WebMO as a web-based, easy-to-use, and free front-end interface for Gaussian09 that allows our students to complete ab initio and density functional theory (DFT) calculations throughout the curriculum. Rather than an isolated exposure to computational chemistry, our students use computational chemistry to obtain a deeper understanding of their experimental work throughout the entire semester. By integrating calculations into the curriculum, the focus moves away from performing the calculations to providing insight into chemical phenomena and understanding experimental results. We provide here both an overview of the introductory laboratory experiment and our integrated approach.

Abstract:Analytical chemistry is a fast-paced field with frequent introduction of new techniques via research labs; however, incorporation of new techniques into academic curricula lags their adoption in research and industry. This review describes the recent educational literature on microfluidics, microcontrollers, and chemometrics in the undergraduate analytical chemistry curriculum. Each section highlights opportunities for nonexpert faculty to get started with these techniques and more advanced implementations suitable for experienced practitioners. While the addition of new topics to any curriculum brings some opportunity costs, student engagement with cutting edge techniques brings many benefits, including enhanced preparation for graduate school and professional careers and development of transferable skills, such as coding. Formal assessment of student outcomes is encouraged to promote broader adoption of these techniques. Abstract:Computational chemistry has been integrated into the chemistry curriculum at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington by incorporating laboratory experiments into six existing undergraduate chemistry courses and adding one new course. This initiative was sponsored by an ILI grant from the National Science Foundation, which provided computers and software. The existing courses affected by the curricular change include Introduction to Computer Applications and Chemical Literature, Organic Chemistry I and II, Advanced Techniques of Organic Chemistry, Biochemical Techniques and Instrumentation, and Medicinal Chemistry. The new course that has been added is Structural Chemistry and Computational Methodology. Experiments are described which integrate the use of molecular modeling for prediction with verification by laboratory experiment. The unifying theme we utilized is to couple computational predictions with experimental results as much as possible. We have attempted to teach computational chemistry as one of a number of tools available to chemists, rather than a separate field of endeavor. Preliminary evaluation of this initiative indicates that students enjoy visualizing models of chemical structures and that the incorporation of computational chemistry into the curriculum has increased their interest in chemistry.

Abstract:A perspective on incorporating the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDG) and Green Chemistry Principles (GCP) into high school chemistry curricula is presented. The framework is based upon the Johnstone-Mahaffy model for chemistry understanding which specifically links student learning to the affective or human-centred domain. Reference is made to the origins of high school chemistry curricula, recommendations from the recent Royal Society of Chemistry survey Green Shoots: A Sustainable Chemistry Curriculum for a Sustainable Planet , student engagement practices, and studies in adolescent mental health. The origins and organization of the UNSDG and GCP are outlined, with the similarities to high school chemistry curricula illustrated. Justification for the implementation of the UNSDG and GCP is given, with a specific example presented in the context of the International Baccalaureate chemistry curriculum, and the GCP are rendered in educator- and student-appropriate language. Abstract:Chemistry and chemical technology contribute to the quality of life on this planet in many areas: health, nutrition, agriculture, transportation, materials and energy production, and industrial development. Chemistry is at its most useful to society when chemists and non-chemists with decision-making responsibilities work with mutual understanding to address the chemistry-related issues facing their communities. Thus, it would seem obvious that all who study chemistry should learn about the interactions of chemistry and society as an integral part of their classroom instruction. However, historically, the tendency worldwide has been to include societal content in chemistry courses only at the lower secondary level. This is changing. This paper explores instructional materials developed by the American Chemical Society that place chemistry in its societal context for high school and college students. This includes a discussion of green chemistry materials that introduce students to the concepts associated with developing environmentally benign processes and products.

Abstract:In this paper, a distinction is first made between environmental, sustainable, and green chemistry; the last two are then examined in relation to the more general problem of environmental education. A brief historical digression on the Science, Technology, and Society movement attempts to dissect reasons why chemistry is seen by the general public as a problem, not as a decisive resource for the realization of the ecological transition. Although sustainable and green chemistry can be decisive in overcoming the insularity of chemical disciplines in high school, it is not well-embedded in educational practices. This situation is slowly changing thanks to the implementations of systems thinking in teaching practice, showing interconnections between the molecular world and sustainability. Historical and epistemological studies provide an all-encompassing framework for the relationship between chemistry and the environment in a broad sense, giving a solid foundation for educational projects. Specific operational goals can help chemical educators in supporting real learning, as well as an examination of the fundamental axes of sustainable and green chemistry, according to the criteria of Scientific and Technological Literacy. Finally, the results of some research carried out in secondary school are presented. These results demonstrate the effectiveness of the interdisciplinary-systemic approach in teaching chemistry as well as in guiding future green careers and reducing the gender gap, preparing high school students in the best possible way to face the challenges of an increasingly interconnected and complex world.

Abstract:Chemistry educators have a responsibility to teach students about the essential role the field of chemistry has in a sustainable future for the planet. Chemical products, such as pharmaceuticals, plastics, electronics, agrochemicals, and building materials, all benefit society yet unintended consequences resulting from the production and use of these products compel chemists to develop new technologies which minimize their harm. The Committee on Professional Training (CPT)'s recently adopted Supplement on "Green Chemistry in the Curriculum" promotes the inclusion of green chemistry in the undergraduate curriculum. The design of safer technologies is enabled by a systems thinking approach, which analyzes the life cycle of every component of a chemical process. The skills utilized by systems thinking in green chemistry have the potential to foresee and avoid unintended consequences of new chemical products. In this article we illustrate how the inclusion of green chemistry in general and organic chemistry courses connects structure and reactivity to a chemical's impact on the environment and human health. For example, applying green chemistry principles and systems thinking concepts to safety instruction not only teaches students to assess risk for performing a reaction but also extends to sustainability considerations such as feedstocks and waste produced. The study of the life cycle of chemicals connects green metrics and system thinking tools to recognize environmental and societal impacts. Though green chemistry curriculum materials are increasingly available, there is a need for educators to develop and assess systems thinking models for the classroom and laboratory. Overall, students equipped with the knowledge and ability to apply green and sustainable principles and the ability to make connections through systems thinking will be prepared to contribute to solving today's sustainability challenges.

Abstract:Chemistry's response to the demand for more sustainability in research and its related industries is laid down in the concepts of green and sustainable chemistry (GSC). GSC started to change the way chemistry is and should be operated in the 21st century. It is suggested that GSC implies that also change is needed to come regarding how chemistry is taught. This article reflects the right time to make learners familiar with the ideas of GSC, discusses selected strategies how ideas from GSC can be integrated with school science and chemistry curricula, and provides an illustrative insight into how teaching green chemistry principles can explicitly be implemented in the upper secondary schooling level.

Abstract:Systems thinking, interdisciplinary research projects, and creative problem solving are ways to frame modern chemistry curricula to inspire the next generation of scientists, engineers, teachers, and citizens to use their skills and education to create a sustainable future. By integrating planetary boundaries, green chemistry, and the UN sustainable development goals, we use a systems thinking approach in undergraduate education and outreach to a range of diverse populations to drive discussion, exploration of scientific principles, and teach students how they can use chemistry to solve the distinctive challenges of the anthropocene. Interdisciplinary research projects employ critical thinking, problem solving, and creativity as part of the scientific method. Translating undergraduate research in nanotechnology, renewable energy, and sustainability into lesson plans and engaging in outreach to diverse populations promotes equity in science education and encourages underrepresented groups to seek careers in a scientific field. Community college students act as role models in outreach as they teach chemistry using a systems thinking approach, connect sustainability to STEM careers that can make a positive impact on local communities, and show underrepresented groups that they are needed in these disciplines. Engaging, interdisciplinary laboratories used in outreach, such as the synthesis of algae biodiesel, making paints from natural resources, sustainable agriculture and engineering, and DNA origami, access all aspects of systems thinking. Using systems thinking as a framework in science education and outreach teaches students the significance and relevance of chemistry while creating a platform for women and underrepresented groups to learn how important their representation is to contribute to a sustainable, equitable future.

Abstract:UC Merced's upper-division analytical chemistry course has been modified to include a series of Jupyter notebooks intended to introduce chemistry students to the Python computer language. These Jupyter notebooks were designed to cover a wide variety of topics common to quantitative and instrumental analysis. Assuming no prior programming experience, the notebooks are scaffolded to introduce students the Python's syntax while applying Python to solving chemical problems. Abstract:Green and sustainable chemistry (GSC) will become ever more central to the study of chemistry. This is demonstrated by commitments from the American Chemical Society, particularly the Committee on Professional Training and the Green Chemistry Institute, and the United Nations (UN Sustainable Development Goals), which underscore the urgent need for a paradigm shift in chemistry and chemistry education. Engagement in green chemistry education can provide students with connections between the chemistry they learn in the course and the environmental and human health consequences of chemistry in the world around them. The purpose of this position paper is to (a) reframe GSC as a decision-making activity, (b) briefly introduce theoretical principles for instructional design and assessment of student learning, and (c) describe a framework for the implementation of Green and Sustainable Chemistry that emerged from our designs of case studies using these theoretical principles. This framework includes four key design principles: (1) underlying chemical phenomena should be central to sustainable issues studied, (2) scaffold complexity over time, (3) students use engineering practices to support decision making, and (4) manage student cognitive load by deliberate use of analytic tools. Finally, we briefly discuss three case studies that were developed by using these principles as examples of this approach.

Abstract:: This article aims at how “General Chemistry” course should follow up the continuous curriculum reform in high schools, while adapt to the irreversible trend of reducing the course hours in universities. Working towards the solution, we suggest that the course of “General Chemistry” changes the focus from teaching chemistry knowledge to capturing the essence of some scientific ideas and means based on the chemical concepts, principles and conclusions. Such core scientific quality-oriented education, embossing the teaching philosophy of cultivating people as the central task, can be attractive for students with different academic directions.

Abstract:Most chemistry instruction and assessment lie in the symbolic domain of Johnstone’s representational levels, despite years of chemistry education researchers calling for increased emphasis to be placed on the molecular or particulate level of chemistry. Without a deep understanding of the particulate nature of matter and molecular-level interactions, meaningful chemistry understanding is nearly impossible. Understanding how molecules and other particles interact provides the necessary explanatory elements for predicting how chemical reactions will occur. To address this gap, the VisChem Approach was developed for university students in Australia in the late 1990s, but it was only recently formally brought to high schools in the United States. In this study, we examine the results of high school teacher implementation of the VisChem Approach in four classrooms following an intensive professional development program. Results indicate that the curricular inserts are successful in addressing many areas of misunderstanding by students regarding the molecular level. Implications for teaching using the VisChem Approach and for research on students’ understanding of the molecular level are also discussed.
