Abstract:Biocompatible coordination polymers (CPs) and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are compelling catalysts toward the ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of cyclic esters to produce biocompatible and biodegradable polyesters. However, a detailed understanding on their catalytic mechanisms and structure-activity relationships that is essential to the rational design of these catalysts far legs behind. Herein, we report the ligand-mediated zinc(II) CPs for ROP of ε-caprolactone (CL) and investigate structure-performance relationships. Three new Zn(II)-based CPs [Zn(1,3-BDC)(Fbtx) 0.5 ] n (Zn-CP-H), {[Zn 2 (5-F-1,3-BDC) 2 (Fbtx)(H 2 O) 2 ]·3H 2 O} n (Zn-CP-F) and [Zn(5-NO 2 –1,3-BDC)(Fbtx) 0.5 (H 2 O)] n (Zn-CP-NO 2 ), were constructed and characterized, and their catalytic activities were investigated. Investigations on the catalytic activities suggested that the three Zn-CPs followed the trend Zn-CP-NO 2 > Zn-CP- F > Zn-CP-H. Moreover, the catalytic performance of Zn-CP-NO 2 was also higher than those of some Zn-based CPs/MOFs such as MOF-2, MOF-5, MOF-74, ZIF-8, and CZU-1. The coordinated water in Zn-CP-NO 2 was found to play a crucial role in improving the catalytic efficiency, thus a synergistic catalysis mechanism between the synergy of the coordinated water-induced Brønsted acid sites and the Lewis acidic zinc(II) sites was tentatively proposed for the ROP reaction. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations suggested that the difference in reactivity of the three Zn-CPs may be ascribed to the effect of substituent groups on the HOMO-LUMO transition energies and the electrostatic potential distribution for each unit cell of the three Zn-CPs. These findings are expected to contribute to the development of biocompatible CP/MOF-based catalysts for the polymerization of cyclic esters.
