Abstract:Non-equilibrium hot carriers formed near the interfaces of semiconductors or metals play a crucial role in chemical catalysis and optoelectronic processes. In addition to optical illumination, an efficient way to generate hot carriers is by excitation with tunnelling electrons. Here, we show that the generation of hot electrons makes the nanoscale tunnel junctions highly reactive and facilitates strongly confined chemical reactions that can, in turn, modulate the tunnelling processes. We designed a device containing an array of electrically driven plasmonic nanorods with up to 10 11 tunnel junctions per square centimetre, which demonstrates hot-electron activation of oxidation and reduction reactions in the junctions, induced by the presence of O 2 and H 2 molecules, respectively. The kinetics of the reactions can be monitored in situ following the radiative decay of tunnelling-induced surface plasmons. This electrically driven plasmonic nanorod metamaterial platform can be useful for the development of nanoscale chemical and optoelectronic devices based on electron tunnelling.

Abstract:Abstract Illumination of noble metal nanostructures by electromagnetic radiation induces coherent oscillations of conductive electrons on their surfaces. These coherent oscillations of electrons, also known as localized surface plasmon resonances (LSPR), are the underlying physical cause of the electromagnetic enhancement of Raman scattering from analytes located in a close proximity to the metal surface. This physical phenomenon is broadly known as surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). LSPR can decay via direct interband, phonon-assisted intraband, and geometry-assisted transitions forming hot carriers, highly energetic species that are responsible for a large variety of chemical transformations. This review critically discusses the most recent progress in mechanistic elucidation of hot carrier-driven chemistry and catalytic processes at the nanoscale. The review provides a brief description of tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (TERS), modern analytical technique that possesses single-molecule sensitivity and angstrom spatial resolution, showing the advantage of this technique for spatiotemporal characterization of plasmon-driven reactions. The review also discusses experimental and theoretical findings that reported novel plasmon-driven reactivity which can be used to catalyze redox, coupling, elimination and scissoring reactions. Lastly, the review discusses the impact of the most recently reported findings on both plasmonic catalysis and TERS imaging.

Hot Electrons in Electrically Driven Plasmonic Nanorod Metamaterials (conference Presentation)

Abstract:Nonequilibrium hot carriers formed near the interfaces of semiconductors or metals play a crucial role in chemical catalysis and optoelectronic processes. In addition to excitation by optical illumination, such hot carriers can also be generated due to electron tunnelling, a quantum-mechanical effect which allows the transport of electrons across a nanoscale junction between two conducting electrodes. Here we study electron tunnelling effects in electrically-driven plasmonic nanorod metamaterials containing up to 10^11 tunnel junctions per square centimeters and show that the generation of hot electrons makes the tunnel junctions highly reactive, facilitating strongly confined chemical reactions which can in turn modulate the tunnelling processes. To form nanometer scale gaps for electron tunneling, an overgrown plasmonic nanorod metamaterial (Au nanorod assembly electrochemically grown in a substrate-supported, thin-film porous aluminum oxide template) was first ion-milled at an oblique angle (75º with respect to the normal to the sample surface) to make the embedded Au nanorods ~1 nm shorter than surrounding aluminum oxide. Then, a droplet of eutectic gallium and indium (EGaIn) was added onto the sample surface working as an upper electrode, forming millions of ~1-nm air gaps between the Au nanorod tips and the EGaIn. When a low voltage (2.5 V) was applied between the Au nanorods and the EGaIn, a strong light emission was observed from the substrate side (~ 4 mm2 in size) due to the radiative decay of plasmonic modes excited in the nanorod metamaterial by inelastic tunnelling electrons. With an increasing applied bias, the intensity of emission increases gradually, and is accompanied by a blue-shift of the cutoff wavelength (the energies of the emitted photons are always less than the energy of tunnelling electrons). Apart from the excitation of plasmons and photons by the inelastic tunnelling electrons, hot electrons are generated simultaneously in the tips of Au nanorods by the elastic tunnelling electrons while leaving hot holes in the EGaIn. The large flux of energetic hot electrons makes the otherwise inert tunnel junctions highly reactive, facilitating the oxidation and reduction reactions in the junctions involving O2 and H2 molecules, respectively. These reactions are monitored either optically by changes in the intensity of light emission (~50%) resulting from the radiative decay of tunnelling-generated surface plasmons, or electrically via tunnelling current variations (~10%). Electrically-driven plasmonic nanorod metamaterial with reactive tunnel junctions comprises a fertile platform merging photonics, electronics and chemistry at the nanoscale, opening up opportunities for developing electron tunnelling-based devices, such as sensors, light sources, nanoreactors, modulators and photodetectors.
Driving energetically unfavorable dehydrogenation dynamics with plasmonics

Abstract:Nanoparticle surface structure and geometry generally dictate where chemical transformations occur, with higher chemical activity at sites with lower activation energies. Here, we show how optical excitation of plasmons enables spatially modified phase transformations, activating otherwise energetically unfavorable sites. We have designed a crossed-bar Au-PdH x antenna-reactor system that localizes electromagnetic enhancement away from the innately reactive PdH x nanorod tips. Using optically coupled in situ environmental transmission electron microscopy, we track the dehydrogenation of individual antenna-reactor pairs with varying optical illumination intensity, wavelength, and hydrogen pressure. Our in situ experiments show that plasmons enable new catalytic sites, including dehydrogenation at the nanorod faces. Molecular dynamics simulations confirm that these new nucleation sites are energetically unfavorable in equilibrium and only accessible through tailored plasmonic excitation.
Mass spectrometric monitoring of ligand-bridged hot electron transfer and anaerobic oxidization on auto renewable droplet-based plasmonic nanoreactors under visible light illumination

Abstract:The light induced hot-electron on plasmonic nanostructures has been recognized as a breakthrough discovery for photovoltaic and photocatalytic applications. With mass spectrometry, we demonstrate the dynamics of hot electron transfers of anaerobic oxidization reactions on Au decorated TiO 2 plasmonic nanoparticles, which were coated on the inner surface of a flask. Those nanoparticles were covered by continuously renewed liquid droplets of solvent and reactants that were transported through a Venturi jet mixer with auto-spray. In addition to intensive mass transfer in such droplet-based nanoreactors, as well as strong adsorption of reactants and rapid desorption of products on materials surfaces, the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) excitation upon visible light illumination, by which accumulated energies of plasmons are transferred to electrons in the conduction band of the material, attributes to the efficient photocatalytic transformation. Mass spectrometric detection of intermediate radical anions and negative ions with stable isotope labeling unambiguously identifies that highly energetic hot electrons can escape from the plasmonic nanostructures, be collected by adsorbed molecules, and initiate bond cleavages. It was demonstrated that losses of two H atoms result in the anaerobic oxidization of each benzyl alcohol molecule to a benzyl aldehyde molecule in the absence of molecular oxygen with more than 90 % yields. The well recyclable plasmonic nanoreactors implicate the injection of transferred electrons eventually back to electronically depleted Au + positive ions. Bridged by adsorbed molecules, electrons were repeatedly circulated back and forth in plasmonic nanoreactors, where the collected light was eventually converted into chemical energy.

Abstract:Plasmonics has recently come into focus as a very promising technology for high-performance photocatalysis. The hot charge carriers together with the enhanced electric field generated by localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) excitation are responsible for the enhanced performance of photocatalysis. Up to now, much work including theoretical and experimental researches has been performed to investigate the plasmon-related enhancement mechanism. Combining plasmonics and electrochemistry at the nanoscale emerges as a new challenge for further widening the application of plasmonic effect. This review summarizes the fundamental principle of LSPR, the mechanism of plasmon-enhanced electrochemistry, and the different electrochemical reactions activated by plasmonics.

Abstract:Excitation of surface plasmon resonance of metal nanostructures is a promising way to break the limit of optical diffraction and to achieve a great enhancement of the local electromagnetic field by the confinement of optical field at the nanoscale. Meanwhile, the relaxation of collective oscillation of electrons will promote the generation of hot carrier and localized thermal effects. The enhanced electromagnetic field, hot carriers and localized thermal effects play an important role in spectral enhancement, biomedicine and catalysis of chemical reactions. In this review, we focus on surface-plasmon-assisted nanomaterial reshaping, growth and transformation. Firstly, the mechanisms of surface-plasmon-modulated chemical reactions are discussed. This is followed by a discussion of recent advances on plasmon-assisted self-reshaping, growth and etching of plasmonic nanostructures. Then, we discuss plasmon-assisted growth/deposition of non-plasmonic nanostructures and transformation of luminescent nanocrystal. Finally, we present our views on the current status and perspectives on the future of the field. We believe that this review will promote the development of surface plasmon in the regulation of nanomaterials.

Abstract:Plasmonic catalysis is an ever-growing field in which chemical reactions are enabled by visible light excitation. The plasmonic effects provide a unique reaction environment, which can greatly affect chemical reaction processes. On the basis of extensive research on plasmon-induced chemical reactions, we focus on the fundamentals of plasmon-mediated catalytic selectivity and summarize recent advances and emerging opportunities in selective chemical bond evolution in this perspective. Taking representative reactions as examples, the unique feature and advantage of surface plasmons in modulating reaction selectivity are deciphered from the perspective of the three elementary steps: adsorption of reactants, activation of adsorbates, and desorption of products. In addition, nanoconfined plasmoninduced spatially selective reactions are also included. This perspective informs insights and opportunities for rationally engineering toward solar utilization.

Abstract:Plasmonic nanostructures with strong light absorption and high catalytic activity are ideal platform to realize efficient light-driven catalysis. This work developed a laser-induced-reshaping route (pulse width 10 ns, wavelength 1064 nm) to improve the efficiency of energy transfer between non-plasmonic material (Pt) and plasmonic Au nanorods (NRs). The catalytic performance for 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) hydrogenation was increased by 2-fold using laser-modified Pt-Au NRs (L-Pt-Au NRs) compared to original Pt-Au NRs. Very impressively, the relationship between laser-induced reshaping and resulting optical properties was investigated at single-particle level. Finite difference time domain (FDTD) simulation and single-particle photoluminescence (PL) quenching (48.6%) after laser induced reshaping, indicated the redistributed Pt atoms on Au NRs surfaces largely promoted hot electron transfer and decreased radiative photon re-emission. Further, the mechanism of plasmon-enhanced nitroreduction was studied in situ at the single-particle level. This work provides insight into the design and application of plasmonic nanostructures at single-particle level.

Abstract:Noble metal nanostructures can produce the surface plasmon resonance under appropriate photoexcitation, which can be used to promote or facilitate chemical reactions, as well as photocatalytic materials, due to their strong plasmon resonance in the visible light region. In the current work, Ag/Au nanoislands (NIs) and Ag NIs/Au film composite systems were designed, and their thermocatalysis performance was investigated using luminescence of Eu3+ as a probe. Compared with Ag NIs, the catalytic efficiency and stability of surface plasmons of Ag/Au NIs and Ag NIs/Au film composite systems were greatly improved. It was found that the metal NIs can also generate strong localized heat at low temperature environment, enabling the transition of NaYF4:Eu3+ to Y2O3: Eu3+, and anti-oxidation was realized by depositing gold on the surface of silver, resulting in the relative stability of the constructed complex.

Optical Manipulation and Catalytic Activity Enhanced by Surface Plasmon Effect

Abstract:For optical manipulation, a nano-optical conveyor belt consisting of an array of gold plasmonic non-concentric nano-rings (PNNRs) is demonstrated for the realization of trapping and unidirectional transportation of nanoparticles by polarization rotation of excitation beam. These hot spots of an asymmetric plasmonic nanostructure are polarization dependent, therefore, one can use the incident polarization state to manipulate the trapped targets. Trapped particles could be transferred between adjacent PNNRs in a given direction just by rotating the polarization of incident beam due to unbalanced potential. The angular dependent distribution of electric field around PNNR has been solved using the three-dimensional finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) technique. For optical enhanced catalytic activity, the spectral properties of dimers of Au nanorod-Au nanorod nanostructures under the excitation of 532nm photons have been investigated. With a super-resolution catalytic mapping technique, we identified the existence of "hot spot" in terms of catalytic reactivity at the gap region within the twined plasmonic nanostructure. Also, FDTD calculation has revealed an intrinsic correlation between hot electron transfer.

Abstract:An attractive field of plasmon-mediated chemical reactions (PMCRs) is developing rapidly, but there is still incomplete understanding of how to control the kinetics of such a reaction related to hot carriers. Here, we chose 8-bromoadenine (8BrAd) as a probe molecule of hot electrons to investigate the influence of the electrode potential, laser wavelength, and power on the PMCR kinetics on silver nanoparticle-modified silver electrodes. Plasmonic hot electron-mediated cleavage of the C–Br bond in 8BrAd has been investigated by combining in situ electrochemical surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations. The experimental and theoretical results reveal that the energy position of plasmon relaxation-generated hot electrons can be modulated conveniently by applied potentials and laser light. This allows the proposal of a mechanism of modulating the matching energy of the hot electron of plasmon relaxation to promote the efficiency of PMCRs in electrochemical interfaces. Abstract:Integration of plasmonic nanoantennas with catalytically active reactors in deliberately designed hybrid supra-nanostructures creates a dual-functional materials platform, based upon which precise modulation of catalytic reaction kinetics becomes accomplishable through optical excitations of plasmon resonances. Here, we have developed a multistep synthetic approach that enables us to assemble colloidal Au@C/Pt core@shell/satellites supra-nanostructures, in which the Au core functions as a light-harvesting plasmonic nanoantenna, the Pt satellites act as catalytically active reactors, and the C shell serves as a nanoscale dielectric spacer separating the reactors from the antenna, respectively. By adjusting several synthetic parameters, the size of the Au core, the thickness of the C shell, and the surface-coverage of Pt satellites can all be tuned independently. Choosing Pt-catalyzed cascade oxidation of 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine in an aerobic aqueous environment as a model reaction, we have systematically studied the detailed kinetic features of the catalytic reactions both in dark and under visible light illumination over a broad range of reaction conditions, which sheds light on the interplay between plasmonic and catalytic effects in these antenna-reactor nanohybrids. The plasmonic antenna effect can be effectively harnessed to kinetically modulate multiple crucial steps during the cascade reactions, benefiting from plasmon-enhanced interband electronic transitions in the Pt satellites and plasmon-enhanced intramolecular electronic excitations in chromogenic intermediate species. In addition to the plasmonic antenna effect, photothermal transduction derived from plasmonic excitations can also provide significant contributions to the kinetic enhancements under visible light illumination. The knowledge gained from this work serves as important guiding principles for rational design and structural optimization of plasmonic antenna-reactor hybrid nanomaterials, endowing us with enhanced capabilities to kinetically modulate targeted catalytic/photocatalytic molecule-transforming processes through light illumination.

Abstract:Plasmonic noble metal nanostructures have been targeted due to their strong surface plasmon resonance at photoelectrochemical interfaces. Recently, it has been concluded that, the plasmonic noble metal nanostructures on photoexcitation permit the transfer of effective hot carriers (hot electron/hole pair) to nearby adsorbed molecules where, the transformed hot carriers can efficiently decrease the activation barrier of a reaction. In this review, our recent achievements in the plasmon-mediated chemical reactions of organic molecules such as para-aminothiophenol, substituted para-aminothiophenol and para-nitrothiophenol at nanostructures modified noble metal electrodes using surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy, electrochemical methods, and theoretical calculations will be discussed.

Abstract:Utilizing hot carriers for efficient plasmonic-mediated chemical reactions (PMCRs) to convert solar energy into secondary energy is one of the most feasible solutions to the global environmental and energy crisis. Finding a plasmonic heterogeneous nanostructure with a more efficient and reasonable hot carrier transport path without affecting the intrinsic plasmonic properties is still a major challenge that urgently needs to be solved in this field. Herein, the mechanism by which plasmonic-promoted interatomic hot electron redistribution on the surface of Au3Cu alloy nanoparticles promotes the electrocatalytic nitrogen reduction reaction (ENRR) is successfully clarified. The localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect can boost the transfer of plasmonic hot electrons from Au atoms to Cu atoms, trigger the interatomic electron regulation of Au3Cu alloy nanoparticles, enhance the desorption of ammonia molecules, and increase the ammonia yield by approximately 93.9%. This work provides an important reference for rationally designing and utilizing the LSPR effect to efficiently regulate the distribution and mechanism of plasmonic hot carriers on the surface of heterogeneous alloy nanostructures.

The enhanced electric field around the nanostructures due to LSPR will significantly enhance the Raman scattering, fluorescence and IR spectra, which enable the realization of single molecule detection. In addition, the LSPR will excite high-energy electron-hole pair (referred to as “hot electrons” and “hot holes”) emerging on metal surface. The energetic charges will considerably affect the electrochemical reactions occurring at the nanoparticles. When the plasmonic metallic nanostructures are coupled to other substrates, for example, the semiconductor (i.e., TiO2, MoS2), the plasmon-excited hot electron-hole at nanoparticle surface can communicate with the conductance and valence bands of the semiconductors, resulting in variation in electro/photocatalytic activity. In this talk, we will start with the study on the possibility of LSPR for monitoring biomolecules and their recognition events at single nanoparticles.1 Then, we report the LSPR enhanced IR for biosensing.2 In the third part, we will show how the LSPR accelerates electrochemical reactions of electroactive biomolecules such as glucose on gold nanoparticles and hydrogen evolution reaction at molybdenum disulphide nanosheets.3 Based on the plasmonics accelerated electrochemical reactions (PAER), high sensitive electrochemical biosensors for detection of glucose and other electroactive biomolecules have been constructed. 1. Monitoring Hot Holes in Plasmonic Catalysis on Silver Nanoparticles by Using an Ion Label

Abstract:Energetic carriers generated by localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) provide an efficient way to drive chemical reactions. However, their dynamics and impact on surface reactions remain unknown due to the challenge in observing hot holes. This makes it difficult to correlate the reduction and oxidation half-reactions involving hot electrons and holes, respectively. Here we detect hot holes in their chemical form, Ag(I), on a Ag surface using surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) of SO32- as a hole-specific label. It allows us to determine the dynamic correlations of hot electrons and holes. We find that the equilibrium of holes is the key factor of the surface chemistry, and the wavelength-dependent plasmonic chemical anode refilling (PCAR) effect plays an important role, in addition to the LSPR, in promoting the electron transfer. This method paves the way for visualizing hot holes with nanoscale spatial resolution toward the rational design of a plasmonic catalytic platform.

Abstract:Electrochemical surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (EC-SERS) can provide the fingerprint information at the molecular level during electrochemical processes and the laser used in the EC-SERS process can simultaneously induce the plasmon-mediated chemical reaction (PMCR). In this work, EC-SERS has been used to understand the plasmonic effects on the selective dimerization reduction route of para-halonitrobenzene on the electrode. Para-iodonitrobenzene (pINB) was first chosen as the probe molecule for photoelectrochemical reductions and investigated in acidic and neutral electrolyte solutions. The density functional theory (DFT) calculations confirmed that the electrochemical reduction of pINB produces 2-amino-5-iodophenol in HClO4 and p,p'-diiodoazobenzene (DIAB) in neutral electrolyte. However, when the PMCR is introduced in the electroreduction of pINB, the route of reduction path can be altered to the reduction product DIAB. Thus DIAB was generated firstly both in acidic and neutral conditions by PMCR and then reduced to p-iodoaniline. Finally, all the para chloro- and bromo- nitrobenzene can generate the p,p'-dihalo-azobenzene dimer by the PMCR under acidic conditions. Therefore, the plasmonic photoelectrochemical dimerization and reduction reactions can give us an idea to introduce the light on the selectivity of chemical reactions on plasmonic noble electrodes of nanostructures to alter the reduction pathway. This is practically significant for obtaining highly selective reduction products.
