Abstract:A Mach-Zehnder Interferometer (MZI) based on seven-core fiber (SCF) for humidity sensing is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The MZI is formed by sandwiched a section of SCF in between two single mode fibers (SMFs), while a fiber taper and a brief multimode fiber (MMF) act as fiber couplers to excite and couple the intermodal interference in the SCF. The optical field distribution and coupling efficiency of the MZI with different SCF lengths are analysed. The theoretical results show that the MZI is sensitive to SCF lengths, and it is expected to obtain highly sensitive humidity response. Humidity sensing experiments shows a high sensitivity of 0.6603 nm/%RH over a relative humidity (RH) range of 44–83 %RH, and the maximum measurement uncertainty introduced by the long-term stability is 0.0006 %RH. Human respiration measurement exhibits the response time and recovery time of the MZI are 0.44 s and 1.24 s respectively. The temperature effect is also experimentally investigated. Such an all-fiber MZI presents advantages of simple configuration, high sensitivity and good stability, making it has potential in humidity measurement fields.

Abstract:An integrated all-fiber sensor based on ring-core fiber (RCF)-embedded long-period fiber grating (LPFG) cascaded RCF-Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) for measuring curvature and temperature is proposed and demonstrated experimentally. The RCF-embedded LPFG section is fabricated by periodically embedding hundreds of micrometers sized RCF into SMF by employing the mature, low-cost cleaving splicing method (CSM). Due to the large core diameter mismatch, the energy within the core is exceeded into the cladding mode more effectively, and the periodic refractive index modulation gives our sensor has a compact size with only three-period SMF-RCF structures and a total length of 2.8 mm. To measure curvature and temperature simultaneously, an RCF-based MZI with an RCF length of 1 mm is cascaded behind LPFG by employing the CSM. Thus, there are two dips corresponding to LPFG and MZI occur in the transmission spectrum. The dips show different responses to curvature and temperature changes. The maximum curvature and temperature sensitivities of the two dips are 26.61, -1.67 nm/m(-1), 0.053 nm/.C, and 0.059 nm/degrees C, respectively. By utilizing a 2 x 2 matrix, simultaneous measurement of curvature and temperature can be achieved. The integrated all-fiber sensor has a compact size, low cost, and high sensitivity possessing more competitivity in complex, harsh applications.

Abstract:In this article, an in-line Mach-Zehnder interferometer (ILMZI)-based temperature sensor of a sandwich-like composite structure was proposed and experimentally demonstrated. Using simple cleaving and splicing operations, ILMZI was formed by compactly sandwiching a section of four-hole microstructure optical fiber (FHMF) of ultrashort length between two segments of multimode fibers and single-mode fibers in turn. Due to the large thermo-optic coefficient difference between the silica and air modes in FHMF, the sensor achieves a comparable sensitivity of 67.29 pm/degrees C over a wide dynamic range of 20.8 degrees C-100.4 degrees C. Because the sensing area length is only a few hundred micrometers, the long-term stability and anti-interference of the sensor are greatly enhanced. In addition, the large airhole design confines the propagation mode in silica medium by total internal reflection, reducing the interaction between the liquid sample and the sensing element, making the sensor inert to the ambient refractive index. The maximum response deviation of the sensor under microvibration disturbances is 3.51 x 10(-4) nm/degrees C, and the maximum cross-sensitivity under strain disturbances is only 0.0018 degrees C/mu epsilon. The proposed sensor is excellent in performance, easy in fabrication, simple in structure, and low in cost, which can be expected to be used in practical temperature sensing applications without any additional packaging.

Abstract:A Mach-Zehnder interferometer based on single-mode-multimode-thin-core-single-mode fiber structure is proposed and experimentally demonstrated for measuring refractive index and temperature simultaneously. The transmission dips of the sensor will shift when the ambient refractive index and temperature change, so it is possible to measure the refractive index and temperature by monitoring the wavelength shifts of the two transmission dips due to different interference orders. The experimental results show that the sensing sensitivities of refractive index and temperature are -18.1764 nm/RIU and 0.0733 nm/RIU within the refractive index range from 1.3105 to 1.3517 and the temperature range from 25 degrees C to 50 degrees C, respectively. Its cost effectiveness, robustness and easy fabrication will have attractive potential applications in chemical and biological sensing.

Abstract:Recently, some fiber sensing applications by coating graphene oxide or reduce graphene oxide have been proposed. In this paper, a novel humidity sensor based on core-offset fiber Mach-Zehnder interferometer coated graphene oxide film has been carried out. Here, we use the chemical method to deal with the surface of the fiber first, and then coated graphene oxide on the surface of the optical fiber sensing arm. The sensitivity of 0.104dB/%RH with a linear correlation coefficient of 99.61% and good stability under the relative humidity range of 30%-60% was obtained.

Abstract:A novel fiber in-line Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) is demonstrated for temperature and refractive index measurements. The sensor is formed by splicing a section of etched thin core fiber (TCF) between two single mode fibers (SMFs). Experimental results show that, high temperature sensitivity of 198.5pm/°C with a temperature variation of 40°C is achieved. The Refractive index (RI) response of the sensor is also investigated; the RI sensitivity is up to -66.305 nm/RIU within the RI range of 1.3286 - 1.3668.

Abstract:An in-fiber Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) with a micro-cavity (MC) exploited for strain and temperature simultaneous measurement. The research is carried out experimentally and simulatively. The MC fabricated by splicing a hollow quartz tube between two single-mode fibers serves as a light splitter for the two arms of MZI beams and a Fabry–Pérot interferometer (FPI) component at the same time. Thus both functions of the MZI and FPI were implemented in a single sensor. With aid of the different response of the MZI and FPI to the strain and temperature, this device can achieve a simultaneous measurement and the strain/temperature cross-sensitivity issue has been alleviated. Such a composite interference structure, possess the characteristics of easy making, high performance-price ratio provides a promising approach to implement strain and high-temperature simultaneous measurement.

Abstract:A humidity sensor based on photonic crystal fiber (PCF) is experimentally demonstrated, which was fabricated by sandwiching a taper between PCF and a standard single mode fiber (SMF). The taper and collapsed region in PCF excite high-order modes and couple them with core mode to form a Michelson interferometer (MI). Experiment results show that the reflection interference intensity linearly changes with humidity and the sensitivity is −0.166 dB/%RH in the range of 30-90 %RH, the sensor displayed a low temperature cross-sensitivity of 0.09 %RH/°C in the temperature range of 20-100 °C. In addition, a rise/recovery time of 400/200 ms was achieved respectively for human breathing test. The easy fabrication, high sensitivity and fast response indicate the sensor has broad practical prospects.

Abstract:In this paper, we proposed an in-fiber Mach-Zehnder temperature sensor based on a dual-core fiber (DCF) in which one core, working as the sensing arm, is suspended in an embedded fluidic channel filled with silicone oil, while the other one, working as the reference arm, locates eccentrically in the DCF. Temperature variations would change the refractive index of silicone oil infiltrated as well as the effective index of the guided mode in the suspended core, thus shifting the interference spectra. Both experiments and numerical simulations were carried out to characterize the sensor. The spectrum shifts measured experimentally agreed well with the theoretical results. Experimental sensitivity of the sensor using a DCF infiltrated with ~20 cm-long silicone oil was found to be as high as −1.42 nm/°, comparable to those of the SPR fiber sensors and other interferometric sensors. The measuring range of the sensor was more than 120°. The proposed sensor could be easily fabricated with good robustness and stability, which makes the sensor promising for applications such as environment and architecture monitoring.

Abstract:An optical fiber in-line Mach-Zehnder interferometer based on a pair of inner microholes in the fiber core is proposed and demonstrated for refractive index and temperature sensing. The microhole is fabricated by firstly inscribing a short line structure by femtosecond, and then discharging the short line area by using a fusion splicer. The incident light beam on the first microhole is divided into two parts, one remains traveling in the fiber core and the other is directed into the cladding and then collected by the second microhole after multiple reflections at the air/cladding interface. The two parts recombines in the fiber core, thus forming a Mach-Zehnder interferometer. By controlling the separation of the two microholes, transmission spectrum with different free spectral range can be obtained. The sensitivities achieved for refractive index and temperature are similar to 68.2 nm/ RIU and 57.8 pm/degrees C, respectively. Such a device is robust in structure, easy in fabrication, and convenient in operation.

Abstract:A new fiber-optic relative humidity (RH) sensor based on a thin-core fiber modal interferometer (TCFMI) with a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) in between is presented. Poly (N-ethyl-4-vinylpyridinium chloride) (P4VP·HCl) and poly (vinylsulfonic acid, sodium salt) (PVS) are layer-by-layer deposited on the side surface of the sensor for RH sensing. The fabrication of the sensing nanocoating is characterized by using UV-vis absorption spectroscopy, quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The incorporation of FBG in the middle of TCFMI can compensate the cross sensitivity of the sensor to temperature. The proposed sensor can detect the RH with resolution of 0.78% in a large RH range at different temperatures. A linear, fast and reversible response has been experimentally demonstrated.

Abstract:We have proposed and fabricated dual self-growing polymer microtips, acting as parallel Fabry-Perot interferometers (FPIs), at the end-facet of a multicore fiber (MCF). With the significantly different responses of these two FPIs, a highly discriminative sensing of humidity and temperature has been demonstrated. The achieved condition number of 3.98 is the lowest in the reported discriminative fiber optic sensors for humidity and temperature, indicating the high reliability when implementing the discriminative measurement. In addition, the low relative-measurement errors of less than 0.49 for the humidity and 1.64 for the temperature have been experimentally verified. The two densely-integrated microtips, with the radial distance less than 40 m, can notably improve the spatial measurement accuracy, and the signals of MCF-tip FPIs can be effectively collected by the fan-in and fan-out device. The proposed sensing microtips at the top of MCF provide a compact, flexible, and scalable scheme for sensitive discriminative measurements, which may pave the way towards micro-scale integrated fiber optic devices for multi-parameters sensing, and accelerate various MCF applications.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a fiber optic sensor for simultaneous temperature and relative humidity measurements based on femtosecond laser processing of an asymmetric single mode-multimode-single mode interferometer, in which half of the core and cladding of a single-mode fiber are removed by a femtosecond laser to form a microcavity, with the remaining grooved portion of the single-mode fiber and the external environment acting as an interferometric arm that is transmitted to the full core portion for coupling. Since the single-mode fiber itself is insensitive to ambient humidity and fragile and prone to breakage after femtosecond laser processing, the microcavity is coated with polyimide to restore the robustness of the structure, which also significantly improves the temperature and humidity sensitivity of the structure. Experimental results show that the temperature sensitivity is −819.7 pm/°C in the temperature range of 40–90 °C and the humidity sensitivity is 503.1 pm/%RH (relative humidity) in the range of 40–75%RH. The proposed sensor is attractive for simultaneous temperature and relative humidity measurements due to its simple construction and easy of fabrication.

Abstract:An all-fiber sensor based on a cascaded optical fiber device is proposed and demonstrated, and its sensor head is composed of a core-offset Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) and a long-period fiber grating (LPFG). In the experiment, two dips shaped by the intermodulation between the interference fringe of MZI and the resonant wavelength of LPFG are monitored. Experimental results show that temperature sensitivities of two dips are 0.060 7 nm/°C and 0.056 3 pm/°C, and the refractive index (RI) sensitivities are −18.025 nm/RIU and −55.06 nm/RIU, respectively. The simultaneous measurement of the temperature and external RI is demonstrated based on the sensitive matrix. Its low fabrication cost, simple configuration and high sensitivity make this sensor have potential applications in chemical and biological sensing.

Abstract:A simple and robust refractive index (RI) sensor based on a Mach-Zehnder interferometer has been demonstrated. A section of optical microfiber drawn from silica fiber is employed as the sensing arm. Because of the evanescent field, a slight change of the ambient RI will lead to the variation of the microfiber propagation constant, which will further change the optical length. In order to compensate the variation of the optical length difference, a tunable optical delay line (ODL) is inserted into the other arm. By measuring the delay of the ODL, the ambient RI can be simply demodulated. A high RI sensitivity of about 7159 mu m/refractive index unit is achieved at microfiber diameter of 2.0 mu m. Abstract:An integrated and robust fiber-optic Fabry–Perot (FP) humidity sensor based on the metal–organic framework (MOF) material FIR-53 is presented and characterized for the first time, along with its implementation method. Noticeably, the FIR-53 crystal was chosen as the moisture-sensitive material, due to its large porosity and chemical tailorability. By connecting the single-mode fiber (SMF) with FIR-53 using polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) rationally, our sensor, whose FP cavity was formed by FIR-53, monitors the spectrum peak shift caused by humidity change. The experiments revealed that the proposed sensor had a sensitivity of 315 pm/% relative humidity (RH) in the range of 10%–90% RH, and also good linearity, reversibility, long-time stability, and antihigh-temperature interference resistance. To summarize, the proposed sensor has the advantages of easy fabrication and low cost, and is highly sensitive to humidity, which is going to have significant potential in the field of humidity sensing and promote the research and application of new fiber-optic sensors for humidity.

Abstract:<p>In this paper, a microfiber Fabry-Perot interferometer temperature probe is proposed by fixing and encapsulating a microfiber and single-mode fiber in the silica capillary using polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). In this structure, the cavity length of the Fabry-Perot interferometer refers to the distance between the end-face of the microfiber and that of the single-mode fiber, which can be adjusted precisely by 3D fiber adjustments. The microfiber Fabry-Perot interferometer has a microfiber diameter of 73 μm and a cavity length of 39 μm, being experimentally demonstrated with a high-temperature sensitivity of 6.386 nm/°C from 42 °C to 54 °C. An interesting optical modulation phenomenon has also been observed. This compact fiber probe can be used for real-time monitoring of temperature fluctuations in small and complex environments.</p>

Abstract:A novel relative humidity (RH) sensor based on a mismatching fused Mach–Zehnder interferometric(MFMZI) fiber structure which can be operated without coating moisture sensitive material, has beenproposed and experimentally demonstrated. A segment of SMF with around 1200 μ m in length is slicedbetween lead-in and lead-out SMFs to construct the U-shaped cavity as sensing part. The optimalstructure mismatching and sensing section result in definite improvement of the RH sensitivity. Abstract:In this paper, a temperature sensing scheme with a miniature MZI structure based on the principle of inter-mode interference is proposed. The sensing structure mainly comprises single mode–coreless–multimode–coreless–single mode fibers (SCMCSs), which have been welded together, with different core diameters. The light beam has been expanded after passing through the coreless optical fiber and is then coupled into a multimode optical fiber. Due to the light passing through the cladding and core mode of the multimode optical fiber with different optical paths, a Mach–Zehnder interferometer is formed. Moreover, due to the thermo-optic and thermal expansion effects of optical fibers, the inter-mode interference spectrum of a multimode fiber shifts when the external temperature changes. Through theoretical analysis, it is found that the change in the length of the sensing fiber during temperature detection has less of an effect on the sensitivity of the sensing structure. During the experiment, temperature changes between 20 and 100 °C are measured at sensing fiber lengths of 1.5 cm, 2.0 cm, 2.5 cm, 3.0 cm, 3.5 cm, and 4.0 cm, respectively, and the corresponding sensitivities are 65.98 pm/°C, 72.70 pm/°C, 67.75 pm/°C, 66.63 pm/°C, 74.80 pm/°C, and 72.07 pm/°C, respectively. All the corresponding correlation coefficients are above 0.9965. The experimental results indicate that in the case of a significant change in the length of the sensing fiber, the sensitivity of the sensing structure changes slightly, which is consistent with the theory that the temperature sensitivity is minimally affected by a change in the length of the sensing fiber. Therefore, the effect of the length on sensitivity in a cascade-based fiber structure is well solved. The sensing scheme has an extensive detection range, small size, good linearity, simple structure, low cost, and high sensitivity. It has a good development prospect in some detection-related application fields.

Abstract:A liquid-filled D-shaped fiber (DF) cavity serving as an in-fiber Mach–Zehnder interferometer (MZI) has been proposed and experimentally demonstrated for temperature sensing with ultrahigh sensitivity. The miniature MZI is constructed by splicing a segment of DF between two single-mode fibers (SMFs) to form a microcavity (MC) for filling and replacement of various refractive index (RI) liquids. By adjusting the effective RI difference between the DF and MC (the two interference arms), experimental and calculated results indicate that the interference spectra show different degrees of temperature dependence. As the effective RI of the liquid-filled MC approaches that of the DF, temperature sensitivity up to −84.72 nm/°C with a linear correlation coefficient of 0.9953 has been experimentally achieved for a device with the MC length of 456 μm, filled with liquid RI of 1.482. Apart from ultrahigh sensitivity, the proposed MCMZI device possesses additional advantages of its miniature size and simple configuration; these features make it promising and competitive in various temperature sensing applications, such as consumer electronics, biological treatments, and medical diagnosis.
