Abstract:Minimally invasive medicine has become mainstream because of its crucial clinical significance in providing a low risk of postoperative complications, limited blood loss, short postoperative recovery time, and small sizes of associated physiological tissue wounds. Endoscopic navigation systems comprise a research hot spot in medical science and technology and are an essential means to achieve precision medicine and improve surgical operation safety. As a core component in endoscopic navigation during minimally invasive surgery, endoscopes play a critical role in disease diagnosis and treatment. The development of endoscopic vision technologies has resulted in a renewed drive to further develop endoscopic navigation systems. Multiple endoscopic optical imaging modalities provide data sources for endoscopic vision technology, including white-light endoscopy, contrast-enhanced imaging and technologies involving magnified observation. Endoscopic vision is a specific application of computer vision involving the use of endoscopes that include instrument tracking, endoscopic view expansion, and suspicious lesion tracking in the application of endoscopic navigation. These techniques help surgeons or surgical robots locate instruments and lesions and expand the field of view of the endoscope. Although these technologies have been applied to various clinical and pre-clinical diagnoses and treatments, the use and combination of these advanced technologies in endoscopic navigation system for specific clinical requirements remains challenging. This review performs a broad survey of advanced endoscopic vision technologies and their application in endoscopic navigation systems. Finally, we discuss the challenges and future directions in implementing and developing endoscopic navigation systems.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem this paper attempts to address is the accuracy and reliability of endoscopic navigation systems in minimally invasive medicine. Specifically, endoscopic navigation systems play a crucial role in minimally invasive surgery by helping doctors accurately locate surgical instruments and lesions, and by expanding the endoscopic field of view. However, due to the limitations of human vision and touch, as well as the restricted field of view of endoscopes, accurately locating surgical instruments and lesions remains challenging. This review article aims to comprehensively investigate advanced endoscopic vision technologies and their applications in endoscopic navigation systems, discussing the challenges these technologies face and future development directions. The main content of the article includes: 1. **Optical Endoscope Modalities**: Introduces various optical endoscope technologies, such as white light endoscopy, contrast-enhanced techniques, and magnification observation techniques, which can provide more image information and improve diagnostic accuracy. 2. **Advanced Endoscopic Vision Technologies**: Discusses in detail endoscopic vision technologies, including surgical instrument tracking, endoscopic field of view expansion, and suspicious lesion tracking. These technologies, through computer vision methods, help doctors more precisely locate and identify lesions. 3. **Applications of Endoscopic Navigation Systems**: Combines clinical needs of different body parts to introduce how advanced vision technologies can be applied to endoscopic navigation systems to improve the safety and precision of surgeries. 4. **Future Research Directions**: Discusses the main challenges faced by endoscopic navigation systems in their implementation and development, and proposes future research directions to provide important references for surgeons and medical device manufacturers. In summary, this paper aims to promote the development of endoscopic navigation systems and improve the safety and effectiveness of minimally invasive surgeries by reviewing advanced endoscopic vision technologies.
