Abstract:The potential role of spin in biological systems is a primary topic in quantum biology. However, much of this research focuses on electron spin. A recent hypothesis suggests that nuclear spin may be better suited to biological processes, being less sensitive to decoherence. The hypothesis details how phosphorus nuclei might be prepared in a spin-entangled state, how this entanglement is protected by assembly into calcium phosphate (Posner) molecules, and how this entanglement might modulate calcium ion production and concomitant neural activation. In this paper, we investigate the robustness of quantum effects such as coherence and entanglement in Posner molecules. We investigate how these effects are directly dependent on specific parameters such as spin-spin coupling strengths and Posner molecule symmetry. We also investigate how lithium isotope-doped Posner molecules differentially modulate quantum resources such as coherence and entanglement and whether this is a viable explanation for lithium's mechanism of action in bipolar disease. Finally, we illustrate how entanglement might possibly be preserved through the exploitation of the biological environment.

Abstract:The Posner molecule, $\text{Ca}_9(\text{PO}_4)_6$, has long been recognized to have biochemical relevance in various physiological processes. It has found recent attention for its possible role as a biological quantum information processor, whereby the molecule purportedly maintains long-lived nuclear spin coherences among its ${^{31}\text{P}}$ nuclei (presumed to be symmetrically arranged), allowing it to function as a room temperature qubit. The structure of the molecule has been of much dispute in the literature, although the $\text{S}_6$ point group symmetry has often been assumed and exploited in calculations. Using a variety of simulation techniques (including ab initio molecular dynamics and structural relaxation), rigorous data analysis tools and by exploring thousands of individual configurations, we establish that the molecule predominantly assumes low symmetry structures ($\text{C}_\text{s}$ and $\text{C}_\text{i}$) at room temperature, as opposed to the higher symmetry configurations explored previously. Our findings have important implications on the viability of this molecule as a qubit.

Abstract:It has been suggested that 31P nuclear spins in Ca9(PO4)6 molecules could form the basis of a quantum mechanism for neural processing in the brain. A fundamental requirement of this proposal is that spins in different Ca9(PO4)6 molecules can become entangled and remain so for periods (estimated at many hours) that hugely exceed typical 31P spin relaxation times. Here, we consider the coherent and incoherent spin dynamics of Ca9(PO4)6 arising from dipolar and scalar spin-spin interactions and derive an upper bound of 37 min on the entanglement lifetime under idealized physiological conditions. We argue that the spin relaxation in Ca9(PO4)6 is likely to be much faster than this estimate.
Quantum Cognition: The possibility of processing with nuclear spins in the brain

Abstract:The possibility that quantum processing with nuclear spins might be operative in the brain is proposed and then explored. Phosphorus is identified as the unique biological element with a nuclear spin that can serve as a qubit for such putative quantum processing - a neural qubit - while the phosphate ion is the only possible qubit-transporter. We identify the "Posner molecule", $\text{Ca}_9 (\text{PO}_4)_6$, as the unique molecule that can protect the neural qubits on very long times and thereby serve as a (working) quantum-memory. A central requirement for quantum-processing is quantum entanglement. It is argued that the enzyme catalyzed chemical reaction which breaks a pyrophosphate ion into two phosphate ions can quantum entangle pairs of qubits. Posner molecules, formed by binding such phosphate pairs with extracellular calcium ions, will inherit the nuclear spin entanglement. A mechanism for transporting Posner molecules into presynaptic neurons during a "kiss and run" exocytosis, which releases neurotransmitters into the synaptic cleft, is proposed. Quantum measurements can occur when a pair of Posner molecules chemically bind and subsequently melt, releasing a shower of intra-cellular calcium ions that can trigger further neurotransmitter release and enhance the probability of post-synaptic neuron firing. Multiple entangled Posner molecules, triggering non-local quantum correlations of neuron firing rates, would provide the key mechanism for neural quantum processing. Implications, both in vitro and in vivo, are briefly mentioned.

Abstract:With the production of polar molecules in the quantum regime, long-range dipolar interactions are expected to facilitate understanding of strongly interacting many-body quantum systems and to realize lattice spin models for exploring quantum magnetism. In ordinary atomic systems, where contact interactions require wavefunction overlap, effective spin interactions on a lattice can be mediated by tunnelling, through a process referred to as superexchange; however, the coupling is relatively weak and is limited to nearest-neighbour interactions. In contrast, dipolar interactions exist even in the absence of tunnelling and extend beyond nearest neighbours. This allows coherent spin dynamics to persist even for gases with relatively high entropy and low lattice filling. Measured effects of dipolar interactions in ultracold molecular gases have been limited to the modification of inelastic collisions and chemical reactions. Here we use dipolar interactions of polar molecules pinned in a three-dimensional optical lattice to realize a lattice spin model. Spin is encoded in rotational states of molecules that are prepared and probed by microwaves. Resonant exchange of rotational angular momentum between two molecules realizes a spin-exchange interaction. The dipolar interactions are apparent in the evolution of the spin coherence, which shows oscillations in addition to an overall decay of the coherence. The frequency of these oscillations, the strong dependence of the spin coherence time on the lattice filling factor and the effect of a multipulse sequence designed to reverse dynamics due to two-body exchange interactions all provide evidence of dipolar interactions. Furthermore, we demonstrate the suppression of loss in weak lattices due to a continuous quantum Zeno mechanism. Measurements of these tunnelling-induced losses allow us to determine the lattice filling factor independently. Our work constitutes an initial exploration of the behaviour of many-body spin models with direct, long-range spin interactions and lays the groundwork for future studies of many-body dynamics in spin lattices.
Protection of Center-Spin Coherence by a Dynamically Polarized Nuclear Spin Core

Abstract:Understanding fully the dynamics of coupled electron-nuclear spin systems, which are important for the development of long-lived qubits based on solid-state systems, remains a challenge. We show that in a singly charged semiconductor quantum dot with inhomogeneous hyperfine coupling, the nuclear spins relatively strongly coupled to the electron spin form a polarized core during the dynamical polarization process. The polarized core provides a protection effect against the electron spin relaxation, reducing the decay rate by a factor of $N_1$, the number of the nuclear spins in the polarized core, at a relatively small total polarization. This protection effect may occur in quantum dots and solid-state spin systems defect centers, such as NV centers in diamonds, and could be harnessed to fabricate in a relatively simple way long-lived qubits and quantum memories.
Refined Structures of O-Phospho-l-serine and Its Calcium Salt by New Multinuclear Solid-State NMR Crystallography Methods

Abstract:O-phospho-l-serine (Pser) and its Ca salt, Ca[O-phospho-l-serine]·H2O (CaPser), play important roles for bone mineralization and were recently also proposed to account for the markedly improved bone-adhesive properties of Pser-doped calcium phosphate-based cements for biomedical implants. However, the hitherto few proposed structural models of Pser and CaPser were obtained by X-ray diffraction, thereby leaving the proton positions poorly defined. Herein, we refine the Pser and CaPser structures by density functional theory (DFT) calculations and contrast them with direct interatomic-distance constraints from two-dimensional (2D) nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) correlation experimentation at fast magic-angle spinning (MAS), encompassing double-quantum-single-quantum (2Q-1Q) 1H NMR along with heteronuclear 13C{1H} and 31P{1H} correlation NMR experiments. The Pser and CaPser structures before and after refinements by DFT were validated against sets of NMR-derived effective 1H-1H, 1H-31P, and 1H-13C distances, which confirmed the improved accuracy of the refined structures. Each distance set was derived from one sole 2D NMR experiment applied to a powder without isotopic enrichment. The distances were extracted without invoking numerical spin-dynamics simulations or approximate phenomenological models. We highlight the advantages and limitations of the new distance-extraction procedure. Isotropic 1H, 13C, and 31P chemical shifts obtained by DFT calculations using the gauge including projector augmented wave (GIPAW) method agreed very well with the experimental results. We discuss the isotropic and anisotropic 13C and 31P chemical-shift parameters in relation to the previous literature, where most data on CaPser are reported herein for the first time.

Abstract:The laser-induced ultrafast spin-switching mechanism via Λ processes in chainlike nanostructures with two identical magnetic centers (here Co atoms) is systematically investigated using a fully ab initio method. In our recent paper [Physical Review B 84 (2011) 054415], a series of rules of thumb was obtained for spin-switching and spin-transferring Λ processes in charged linear molecular ions with two different magnetic centers. In the present work, the theory is further developed and focuses on neutral systems with two identical magnetic centers. It is found that the chromophore CO molecule plays a critical role in the spin localization in the system by lowering its symmetry. Using Mg as a bridging atom we achieve the so far fastest spin-switching scenario (within 100fs, an increase in speed by a factor of 3). This demonstrates the necessity for careful engineering of spin-logic units in future nanoscale spintronic devices.
Multi-spin dynamics of the solid-state NMR Free Induction Decay

Abstract:We present a new experimental investigation of the NMR free induction decay (FID) in a lattice of spin-1/2 nuclei in a strong Zeeman field. Following a pi/2 pulse, evolution under the secular dipolar Hamiltonian preserves coherence number in the Zeeman eigenbasis, but changes the number of correlated spins in the state. The observed signal is seen to decay as single-spin, single-quantum coherences evolve into multiple-spin coherences under the action of the dipolar Hamiltonian. In order to probe the multiple-spin dynamics during the FID, we measured the growth of coherence orders in a basis other than the usual Zeeman eigenbasis. This measurement provides the first direct experimental observation of the growth of coherent multiple-spin correlations during the FID. Experiments were performed with a cubic lattice of spins (19F in calcium fluoride) and a linear spin chain (19F in fluorapatite). It is seen that the geometrical arrangement of the spins plays a significant role in the development of higher order correlations. The results are discussed in light of existing theoretical models.

Enhancing the ODMR Signal of Organic Molecular Qubits

Abstract:In the fields of quantum information science and sensing, electron spins are often purified into a specific polarisation through an optical-spin interface, a process known as optically-detected magnetic resonance (ODMR). Diamond-NV centres and transition metals are both excellent platforms for these so-called colour centres, while metal-free molecular analogues are also gaining popularity for their extended polarisation lifetimes, milder environmental impacts, and reduced costs. In our earlier attempt at designing such organic high-spin $\pi$-diradicals, we proposed to spin-polarise by shelving triplet $M_{S}=\pm1$ populations as singlets. This was recently verified by experiments albeit with low ODMR contrasts of <1% at temperatures above 5 K. In this work, we propose to improve the ODMR signal by moving singlet populations back into the triplet $M_{S}=0$ sublevel, designing a true carbon-based molecular analogue to the NV centre. To achieve both spin channels in $\pi$-diradicals, we leverage on weaker spin-orbit couplings beyond the nearest-neighbour approximation, made possible by careful control of orbital nodal structures and group-theoretical considerations. These analyses are further confirmed by ab initio calculations of a realistic trityl-based radical dimer. Microkinetic analyses point towards high ODMR contrasts of around 30% under experimentally-feasible conditions, a stark improvement from previous works. Finally, in our quest towards ground-state optically-addressable molecular spin qubits, we exemplify how our symmetry-based design avoids Zeeman-induced singlet-triplet mixings during electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) experiments, setting the scene for realising electron spin qubit gates.

Abstract:Studies of single-spin objects are essential for designing emergent quantum states. We investigate a molecular magnet Tb2Pc3 interacting with a superconducting Pb(111) substrate, which hosts unprecedented Yu-Shiba-Rusinov (YSR) subgap states, dubbed spin-orbital YSR states. Upon adsorption of the molecule on Pb, the degeneracy of its lowest unoccupied molecular orbitals (LUMO) is lifted, and the lower LUMO forms a radical spin via charge transfer. This leads to Kondo screening and subgap states. Intriguingly, the YSR states display two pairs of resonances with clearly distinct behavior. The energy of the inner pair exhibits prominent inter and intra molecular variation, and it strongly depends on the tip height. The outer pair, however, shifts only slightly. As is unveiled through theoretical calculations, the two pairs of YSR states originate from the ligand spin and charge-fluctuating higher LUMO, coexisting in a single molecule, but only weakly coupled presumably due to different spatial distribution. Our work paves the way for understanding complex many-body excitations and constructing molecule-based topological superconductivity.
Dynamic Nuclear Polarization Enhanced Multiple Quantum Spin Counting of Molecular Assemblies in Vitrified Solutions

Abstract:Crystallization pathways are essential to various industrial, geological, and biolog- ical processes. In nonclassical nucleation theory, prenucleation clusters (PNCs) form, aggregate and crystallize to produce higher order assemblies. Microscopy and X-Ray techniques have limited utility for PNC analysis due to small size (0.5 - 3 nm) and time stability constraints. We present a new approach for analyzing PNC formation based on 31P NMR spin counting of vitrified molecular assemblies. The use of glassing agents en- sures that vitrification generates amorphous aqueous samples, and offers conditions to perform dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) amplified NMR spectroscopy. We demon- strate that molecular adenosine triphosphate, along with crystalline, amorphous, and clustered calcium phosphate materials formed via a non-classical growth pathway can be differentiated from one another by the number of dipolar coupled 31P spins. We also present an innovative approach to examine spin counting data, demonstrating that a knowledge based fitting of integer multiples of cosine wave functions, instead of the traditional Fourier transform, provides a more physically meaningful retrieval of the ex- isting frequencies. This is the first report of multi-quantum spin counting of assemblies formed in solution as captured under vitrified DNP conditions, which can be useful for future analysis of PNCs and other aqueous molecular clusters.

Excited states of polonium(IV): Electron correlation and spin-orbit coupling in the Po^{4+} free ion and in the bare and solvated [PoCl5]^- and [PoCl6]^{2-} complexes

Abstract:Polonium (Po, Z = 84) is a main-block element with poorly known physico-chemical properties. Not much information has been firmly acquired since its discovery by Marie and Pierre Curie in 1898, especially regarding its speciation in aqueous solution and spectroscopy. In this work, we revisit the absorption properties of two complexes, [PoCl5]^- and [PoCl6]^{2-}, using quantum mechanical calculations. These complexes have the potential to exhibit a maximum absorption at 418 nm in HCl medium (for 0.5 mol/L concentrations and above). Initially, we examine the electronic spectra of the Po^{4+} free ion and of its isoelectronic analogue, Bi^{3+}. In the spin-orbit configuration interaction (SOCI) framework. Our findings demonstrate that the SOCI matrix should be dressed with correlated electronic energies and that the quality of the spectra is largely improved by decontracting the reference states at the complete active space plus singles (CAS+S) level. Subsequently, we investigate the absorption properties of the [PoCl5]^- and [PoCl6]^{2-} complexes in two stages. Firstly, we perform methodological tests at the MP2/def2-TZVP gas phase geometries, indicating that the decontraction of the reference states can there be skipped without compromising the accuracy significantly. Secondly, we study the solution absorption properties by means of single-point calculations performed at the solvated geometries, obtained by an implicit solvation treatment or a combination of implicit and explicit solvation. Our results highlight the importance of saturating the first coordination sphere of the Po^{IV} ion to obtain a qualitatively correct picture. Finally, we conclude that the known-for-decades 418 nm peak could be attributed to a mixture of both the [PoCl5(H2O)]^- and [PoCl6]^{2-} complexes. Abstract:Magic angle spinning solid-state NMR is a unique technique to study atomic-resolution structure of biomacromolecules which resist crystallization or are too large to study by solution NMR techniques. However, difficulties in obtaining sufficient number of long-range distance restraints using dipolar coupling based spectra hamper the process of structure determination of proteins in solid-state NMR. In this study it is shown that high-resolution structure of proteins in solid phase can be determined without the use of traditional dipolar-dipolar coupling based distance restraints by combining the measurements of pseudocontact shifts (PCSs) with Rosetta calculations. The PCSs were generated by chelating exogenous paramagnetic metal ions to a tag 4-mercaptomethyl-dipicolinic acid, which is covalently attached to different residue sites in a 56-residue immunoglobulin-binding domain of protein G (GB1). The long-range structural restraints with metal-nucleus distance of up to ∼20 Å are quantitatively extracted from experimentally observed PCSs, and these are in good agreement with the distances back-calculated using an X-ray structure model. Moreover, we demonstrate that using several paramagnetic ions with varied paramagnetic susceptibilities as well as the introduction of paramagnetic labels at different sites can dramatically increase the number of long-range restraints and cover different regions of the protein. The structure generated from solid-state NMR PCSs restraints combined with Rosetta calculations has 0.7 Å root-mean-square deviation relative to X-ray structure.

Abstract:Ultra-fast magic-angle spinning (100+ kHz) has revolutionized solid-state NMR of biomolecular systems but has so far failed to gain ground for the analysis of paramagnetic organic and inorganic powders, despite the potential rewards from substantially improved spectral resolution. The principal blockages are that the smaller fast-spinning rotors present significant barriers for sample preparation, particularly for air/moisture-sensitive systems, and are associated with lower sensitivity from the reduced sample volumes. Here these difficulties are overcome by improvements in rotor ceramics and handling methods that enable the routine use of this setup for repetitive, high-throughput analysis of sensitive samples. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the sensitivity penalty is less severe than expected for highly paramagnetic solids and is more than offset by the associated improved resolution. While previous approaches employing slower MAS are often unsuccessful in providing sufficient resolution, we show that ultra-fast 100+ kHz MAS allows site-specific assignments of all resonances from complex paramagnetic solids. This opens the way to routine characterisation of geometry and electronic structures of functional paramagnetic systems in chemistry, including catalysts and battery materials. We benchmark this approach on a hygroscopic luminescent Tb3+ complex, an air-sensitive homogeneous high-spin Fe2+ catalyst, and a series of mixed Fe2+/Mn2+/Mg2+ olivine-type cathode materials.

Proton-Detected Solid-State NMR Spectroscopy of Bone with Ultrafast Magic Angle Spinning

Abstract:AbstractWhile obtaining high-resolution structural details from bone is highly important to better understand its mechanical strength and the effects of aging and disease on bone ultrastructure, it has been a major challenge to do so with existing biophysical techniques. Though solid-state NMR spectroscopy has the potential to reveal the structural details of bone, it suffers from poor spectral resolution and sensitivity. Nonetheless, recent developments in magic angle spinning (MAS) NMR technology have made it possible to spin solid samples up to 110 kHz frequency. With such remarkable capabilities, 1H-detected NMR experiments that have traditionally been challenging on rigid solids can now be implemented. Here, we report the first application of multidimensional 1H-detected NMR measurements on bone under ultrafast MAS conditions to provide atomistic-level elucidation of the complex heterogeneous structure of bone. Our investigations demonstrate that two-dimensional 1H/1H chemical shift correlation spectra for bone are obtainable using fp-RFDR (finite-pulse radio-frequency-driven dipolar recoupling) pulse sequence under ultrafast MAS. Our results infer that water exhibits distinct 1H−1H dipolar coupling networks with the backbone and side-chain regions in collagen. These results show the promising potential of proton-detected ultrafast MAS NMR for monitoring structural and dynamic changes caused by mechanical loading and disease in bone.
