Abstract:Animal migration has fascinated scientists and the public alike for centuries, yet migratory animals are facing diverse threats that could lead to their demise. The Anthropocene is characterised by the reality that humans are the dominant force on Earth, having manifold negative effects on biodiversity and ecosystem function. Considerable research focus has been given to assessing anthropogenic impacts on the numerical abundance of species/populations, whereas relatively less attention has been devoted to animal migration. However, there are clear linkages, for example, where human‐driven impacts on migration behaviour can lead to population/species declines or even extinction. Here, we explore anthropogenic threats to migratory animals (in all domains – aquatic, terrestrial, and aerial) using International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Threat Taxonomy classifications. We reveal the diverse threats (e.g. human development, disease, invasive species, climate change, exploitation, pollution) that impact migratory wildlife in varied ways spanning taxa, life stages and type of impact (e.g. from direct mortality to changes in behaviour, health, and physiology). Notably, these threats often interact in complex and unpredictable ways to the detriment of wildlife, further complicating management. Fortunately, we are beginning to identify strategies for conserving and managing migratory animals in the Anthropocene. We provide a set of strategies that, if embraced, have the potential to ensure that migratory animals, and the important ecological functions sustained by migration, persist.

Shorebirds along the Yellow Sea Coast of China Face an Uncertain Future - A Review of Threats

Abstract:Wetlands along the Yellow Sea coast of China, which are a major staging area for shorebirds in the East Asian-Australasian Flyway, are in a state of crisis that threatens the future of this migration system. Populations of many shorebirds in the Flyway have declined in recent decades at a time when there has been widespread loss of habitat and degradation of coastal wetlands around the Yellow Sea. Here we examine current threats to coastal wetlands along China's Yellow Sea coast based on field surveys in 2013 and 2014 and a review of the literature. Intertidal habitats have been lost to land claim or degraded through aquaculture and harvesting, as well as gross pollution and invasion of exotic Spartina, all of which have negatively affected shorebird foraging, roosting and breeding sites. Planned further development, if unchecked, will result in the loss of most of the remaining intertidal area, which is likely to result in calamitous declines in populations of many shorebirds. There is a need for immediate action to curb future land claim and to develop an integrated coastal management strategy. Further research on applied aspects of shorebird ecology is urgently needed to inform future policy development and decision making.
Simultaneous Declines in Summer Survival of Three Shorebird Species Signals A Flyway at Risk

Abstract:Summary There is increasing concern about the world's animal migrations. With many land‐use and climatological changes occurring simultaneously, pinning down the causes of large‐scale conservation problems requires sophisticated and data‐intensive approaches. Declining shorebird numbers along the East Asian–Australasian Flyway, in combination with data on habitat loss along the Yellow Sea (where these birds refuel during long‐distance migrations), indicate a flyway under threat. If habitat loss at staging areas indeed leads to flyway‐wide bird losses, we would predict that: (i) decreases in survival only occur during the season that birds use the Yellow Sea, and (ii) decreases in survival occur in migrants that share a reliance on the vanishing intertidal flats along the Yellow Sea, even if ecologically distinct and using different breeding grounds. Monitored from 2006–2013, we analysed seasonal apparent survival patterns of three shorebird species with non‐overlapping Arctic breeding areas and considerable differences in foraging ecology, but a shared use of both north‐west Australian non‐breeding grounds and the Yellow Sea coasts to refuel during northward and southward migrations (red knot Calidris canutus piersmai, great knot Calidris tenuirostris, bar‐tailed godwit Limosa lapponica menzbieri). Distinguishing two three‐month non‐breeding periods and a six‐month migration and breeding period, and analysing survival of the three species and the three seasons in a single model, we statistically evaluated differences at both the species and season levels. Whereas apparent survival remained high in north‐west Australia, during the time away from the non‐breeding grounds survival in all three species began to decline in 2011, having lost 20 percentage points by 2012. By 2012 annual apparent survival had become as low as 0·71 in bar‐tailed godwits, 0·68 in great knots and 0·67 in red knots. In a separate analysis for red knots, no mortality occurred during the migration from Australia to China. In the summers of low summer survival, weather conditions were benign in the Arctic breeding areas. We argue that rapid seashore habitat loss in the Yellow Sea is the most likely explanation of reduced summer survival, with dire (but uncertain) forecasts for the future of these flyway populations. This interpretation is consistent with recent findings of declining shorebird numbers at seemingly intact southern non‐breeding sites. Policy implications. Due to established economic interests, governments are usually reluctant to act for conservation, unless unambiguous evidence for particular cause–effect chains is apparent. This study adds to an increasing body of evidence that habitat loss along the Yellow Sea shores explains the widespread declines in shorebird numbers along the East Asian–Australasian Flyway and threatens the long‐term prospects of several long‐distance migrating species. To halt further losses, the clearance of coastal intertidal habitat must stop now.

Abstract:Recent increases in human disturbance pose significant threats to migratory species using collective movement strategies. Key threats to migrants may differ depending on behavioural traits (e.g. collective navigation), taxonomy and the environmental system (i.e. freshwater, marine or terrestrial) associated with migration. We quantitatively assess how collective navigation, taxonomic membership and environmental system impact species' vulnerability by (i) evaluating population change in migratory and non-migratory bird, mammal and fish species using the Living Planet Database (LPD), (ii) analysing the role of collective navigation and environmental system on migrant extinction risk using International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) classifications and (iii) compiling literature on geographical range change of migratory species. Likelihood of population decrease differed by taxonomic group: migratory birds were more likely to experience annual declines than non-migrants, while mammals displayed the opposite pattern. Within migratory species in IUCN, we observed that collective navigation and environmental system were important predictors of extinction risk for fishes and birds, but not for mammals, which had overall higher extinction risk than other taxa. We found high phylogenetic relatedness among collectively navigating species, which could have obscured its importance in determining extinction risk. Overall, outputs from these analyses can help guide strategic interventions to conserve the most vulnerable migrations. This article is part of the theme issue ‘Collective movement ecology'.

Abstract:<p>Migratory birds rely on a habitat network along their migration routes by temporarily occupying stopover sites between breeding and non‐breeding grounds. Removal or degradation of stopover sites in a network might impede movement, and thereby reduce migration success and survival. The extent to which the breakdown of migration networks, due to changes in land use, impacts the population sizes of migratory birds is poorly understood. We measured the functional connectivity of migration networks of waterfowl species that migrate over the East Asian‐Australasian Flyway from 1992‐2015. We analysed the relationship between changes in non‐breeding population sizes and changes in functional connectivity, while taking into account other commonly‐considered species traits, using a Phylogenetic Linear Mixed Model. We found that population sizes significantly declined with a reduction in the functional connectivity of migration networks; no other variables were important. We conclude that the current decrease in functional connectivity, due to habitat loss and degradation in migration networks, can negatively and crucially impact population sizes of migratory birds. Our findings provide new insights into the underlying mechanisms that affect population trends of migratory birds under environmental changes. Establishment of international agreements leading to the creation of systematic conservation networks associated with migratory species' distributions and stopover sites may safeguard migratory bird populations.</p><p>This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:[Extract] The East Asian-Australasian Flyway (EAAF) is the most threatened flyway worldwide, encompassing the greatest number of threatened migratory bird species of all flyways on Earth [1]. This is largely attributed to pronounced human-bird conflicts in Asia, leading to elevated rates of habitat loss, degradation, and illegal hunting [2], [3]. During the last few decades, there was extensive degradation of Asia’s inland [4] and coastal wetlands [5], vital habitats used by migratory species during their annual migration, spanning from Arctic Russia and Alaska to the southern limits of Australia and New Zealand. The impact of this widespread habitat loss is becoming increasingly obvious.
Long-distance migratory birds threatened by multiple independent risks from global change

Abstract:Many species migrate long distances annually between their breeding and wintering areas1. Although global change affects both ranges, impact assessments have generally focused on breeding ranges and ignored how environmental changes influence migrants across geographical regions and the annual cycle2,3. Using range maps and species distribution models, we quantified the risk of summer and winter range loss and migration distance increase from future climate and land cover changes on long-distance migratory birds of the Holarctic (n = 715). Risk estimates are largely independent of each other and magnitudes vary geographically. If seasonal range losses and increased migration distances are not considered, we strongly underestimate the number of threatened species by 18–49% and the overall magnitude of risk for 17–50% species. Many of the analysed species that face multiple global change risks are not listed by International Union for Conservation of Nature as threatened or near threatened. To neglect seasonal migration in impact assessments could thus seriously misguide species’ conservation.

Ecological Correlates of Extinction Risk in Chinese Birds

Abstract:China is one of the countries with the richest bird biodiversity in the world. Among the 1372 Chinese birds, 146 species are considered threatened and three species are regionally extinct according to the officially released China Biodiversity Red List in 2015. Here, we conducted the first extensive analysis to systematically investigate the patterns and processes of extinction and threat in Chinese birds. We addressed the following four questions. First, is extinction risk randomly distributed among avian families in Chinese birds? Second, which families contain more threatened species than would be expected by chance? Third, which species traits are important in determining the extinction risk in Chinese birds using a multivariate phylogenetic comparative approach? Finally, is the form of the relationship between traits additive or nonadditive (synergistic)? We found that the extinction risk of Chinese birds was not randomly distributed among taxonomic families. The families that contained significantly more threatened species than expected were the hornbills, cranes, pittas, pheasants and hawks and eagles. We obtained eleven species traits that are commonly hypothesized to influence extinction risk from the literature: body size, clutch size, trophic level, mobility, habitat specificity, geographical range size, nest type, nest site, flocking tendency, migrant status and hunting vulnerability. After phylogenetic correction, model selection based on Akaike's information criterion identified the synergistic interaction between body size and hunting vulnerability as the single best correlate of extinction risk in Chinese birds. Our results suggest that, in order to be effective, priority management efforts should be given both to certain extinction‐prone families, particularly the hornbills, pelicans, cranes, pittas, pheasants and hawks and eagles, and to bird species with large body size and high hunting vulnerability.
Spatial-temporal phenological asynchrony induced by climate change threatens the integrity of the avian migration network

Abstract:Abstract Phenological responses to climate change frequently vary among trophic levels, which can result in increasing mismatch between the peak energy requirements of consumers and the availability of resources. Migratory birds use multiple habitats with seasonal food resources along traditional migration flyways. Spatially heterogeneous climate changes could cause this phenology of food availability along the migration flyway to become mismatched. This so-called spatial-temporal phenological asynchrony could pose a challenge by reducing food intake along the migration path and consequently influencing survival and reproduction. We develop a novel graph-based approach to quantify this problem and deploy it to evaluate the risks of, and the drivers behind, the spatial-temporal phenological asynchrony for 16 migratory herbivorous waterfowl species in Asia. We show that climate change-induced spatial-temporal phenological asynchrony could cause in average 48% loss of migration network connectivity for all study species. Species that winter at a lower latitude or that have a wider migration corridor are subjected to higher risk to the integrity of their migration network. These findings highlight the susceptibility of migratory species to climate change, and our proposed methodological framework could be applied to migratory species in general and contribute to formulate targeted actions for biodiversity conservation in the face of climate-related risks.

Abstract:SummaryThe widespread decline of migratory shorebirds in the East Asian-Australasian Flyway (EAAF) is one of the greatest crises for migrating birds. Among the migratory species with known population trends, 88% (22 of 25 species) show population declines, and seven have been listed as threatened or Near Threatened in the IUCN Red List. The decline of migratory shorebirds is related to the deterioration of stopping sites (including staging and stopping sites) in the Yellow Sea, including loss of intertidal wetlands, spread of invasive smooth cordgrass Spartina alterniflora on intertidal flats, an increase in pollution, and an increase in human disturbance. We review research concerning shorebird migration through the Yellow Sea and highlight key research activities required for the conservation of shorebirds in the region. These activities include: confirming the population consequences of loss of stopping sites, estimating migration timing and numbers of shorebirds at stopping sites, determining the differing abilities of species to use alternative habitats, understanding intra- and interspecific differences in the use of stopping sites, maintaining and expanding surveys on shorebirds and habitat condition, and identifying threats to shorebirds beyond habitat loss by reclamation. The information generated by these research activities is required for the design and selection of effective conservation actions to reverse the decline in shorebird populations.

Abstract:In a warming world, more intense and frequent compound climate extreme events pose serious challenges to biodiversity and conservation on Earth as one of the 2030 United Nations’ sustainable development goals (SDGs): “Life On Land” (SDG 15). In summer 2020, concurrent swelling wildfires and a sudden cold snap in the western U.S. killed a massive number of migratory birds. In August 2020, the hot and humid weather in response to the wildfire radiation and the oceanic evaporation could result in killing heat stress for migratory birds along the coastal shoreline, particularly in California. The heat and smoke of wildfires forced the migratory birds to abandon such feeding grounds towards inland regions, where water and food are naturally scarce, before being physiologically ready for their long-distance flyways. Then, a cold snap during 8–11 September in the Rocky Mountain states in the western U.S. urged those already weak migratory birds to fly southward before effectively recovering their physical and mental capabilities. This durable extreme starvation finally brought the skinny migrants low in the southwestern U.S. However, such ecological cascade effects of compound climate risks have rarely been acknowledged as a serious threat to migratory birds’ conservation in both scientific literature and ecosystems’ management practice. To improve our chances of saving birds’ biodiversity on Earth, hence, conscious policies and sustained efforts must immediately be arranged through SDG 13 (“Climate Actions”) based on scientific evidence and knowledge.

Abstract:This review deals with the topics of bird migration research that have seen significant progress in the recent years. In these fields, earlier views have been significantly re-considered. They include the manifestation of migration, i.e. length of migratory flights, their speed, duration of stopovers, flight altitude, which taken together form the spatio-temporal realization of migration. New data on this array of research questions make it possible to ask new questions about physiological adaptations that make such flights possible, and factors that govern these processes. Significant progress is also evident in the study of long-distance orientation and navigation of migrating birds. However, it mainly concerns the mechanisms of magnetoreception and use of magnetic cues for orientation. Besides, students of bird migration could not ignore the ‘-omics’ revolution, which, like the studies of the manifestation of migration, was mainly caused by technological advances, mainly by the advent of next generation sequencing techniques. The new data obtained by these methods raised the hope to sort out the genetic basis of endogenous control of bird migration. However, the gap between the expectations and the actual results remains. To close this gap, new research into the molecular and cellular mechanisms that underlie migratory behavior is necessary. The results available now mainly refer to the processes that are relatively well understood, mainly the mechanisms of energy turnover and stress response.
Divergent Importance and Geographic Patterns in Threats to Birds and Mammals in China

Abstract:Aim Wildlife populations are continuing to decrease worldwide. Understanding the ranking and distribution of drivers of species declines is crucial to enable targeted actions to counteract major threats. However, few studies have assessed the relative importance and geographic distribution of threats to biodiversity in China, even for high‐profile groups such as birds and mammals. Therefore, this study aims to rank and map the distribution of threat to birds and mammals in China, which could provide novel insight into biodiversity conservation in China. Location China. Methods A database of different threats for 147 threatened bird species and 176 threatened terrestrial mammal species was obtained from China's Red List of Biodiversity published in 2021. We collated information on the distribution and threat categories for birds and mammals in China, aiming to classify, rank and map threats. We used Bray–Curtis dissimilarity index to examine the correlations of threats occurring simultaneously, and compared the distribution of habitat of threatened birds and mammals. In addition, we conducted threat ranking analyses of threatened birds and mammals between different orders and traits (body mass and clutch/litter sizes). Results The results showed that the most common threats to birds were habitat loss, hunting, human disturbance, agriculture, pollution and logging, while the most common threats to mammals were hunting, agriculture, logging, habitat loss, human disturbance and livestock farming or ranching. These threats showed different geographic patterns, and some threats frequently co‐occur as threat syndromes. Forests were the primary habitat for most threatened species, and orders formed by larger species with small clutch or litter sizes were more likely to be threatened. Main Conclusions We highlight the most common threats and key areas for conservation. Furthermore, focusing on clusters of co‐occurring threats may be the most effective way to aid recovery of threatened species, and targeted actions are needed to counter ongoing population declines in many groups. These actions should not be limited to the protection of regions where species are at risk of multiple significant threats, but should also include the maintenance and restoration of native forests and strategic planning of afforestation through planted forests.

Abstract:With nearly 400 migratory landbird species, the East Asian Flyway is the most diverse of the world’s flyways. This diversity is a consequence of the varied ecological niches provided by biomes ranging from broadleaf forests to arctic tundra and accentuated by complex biogeographic processes. The distribution and migration ecology of East Asian landbirds is still inadequately known, but a recent explosion in the number of studies tracking the migration of raptors, cuckoos, kingfishers and passerines has greatly increased our knowledge about the stopover and wintering ecology of many species, and the migratory routes that link northeast Eurasia and the Asian tropics. Yet the East Asian Flyway also supports the highest number of threatened species among flyways. Strong declines have been detected in buntings (Emberizidae) and other long-distance migrants. While the conservation of migratory landbirds in this region has largely focused on unsustainable hunting, there are other threats, such as habitat loss and increased agro-chemical use driven directly by land cover change and climate-related processes. Important knowledge gaps to be addressed include (1) threats affecting species in different parts of their annual cycle, (2) range-wide population trends, (3) ecological requirements and habitat use during the non-breeding season, and (4) the conservation status of critical wintering sites (including understudied farming landscapes, such as rice fields) and migration bottlenecks along the flyway.

Effects of habitat loss on migratory shorebird community structure at stopover sites: A case study in the Yellow River Delta, China

Abstract:Coastal wetlands in China provide important stopover sites for migratory shorebird species. The loss of natural wetlands caused by land reclamation over the past few decades poses a major threat to shorebird populations. Although habitat loss at key stopover sites has been shown to lead to reductions in shorebird populations, the effects of habitat loss at specific stopover sites on shorebird populations remain unclear. Here, we used shorebird diversity indices and landscape metrics to elucidate the long-term (19952020) effects of habitat change on shorebird community structure in the Yellow River Delta, which is an important stopover site for shorebirds along the Yellow Sea coast. The results showed that the habitat area, largest patch index, mean patch area, and the aggregation index decreased over 25 years. By contrast, the number of patches and patch density increased over the same period. The richness, Shannon-Wiener index, Pielou index, and Simpson index of the shorebird community increased from 1995 to 2020, while abundance of shorebird declined by 90.14%. Declines in the abundance of species were more pronounced in larger-bodied ones than in smaller-bodied species (T=1.156, df=42, p=0.02). On the other hand, there were no significant differences in the decline in the abundance of threatened species and non-threatened species (T=-0.483, df=42, p=0.632) and coastal specialist species and generalist/inland specialist species (T=-1.197, df=42, p=0.239). The decrease in mean patch area significantly contributed to the reduction in abundance of shorebirds (N=6, p=0.01), and its effects were more pronounced on larger-bodied ones than on smaller-bodied species (T=-2.113, df=42, p=0.04). These results suggest that habitat loss in the Yellow River Delta has contributed to declines in shorebird populations and that larger-bodied ones are more sensitive to habitat change than smaller-bodied species. Existing wetlands are in urgent need of conservation, and further land reclamation in this region should be avoided. In addition, the development of conservation plans for coastal wetlands requires consideration of variation in the responses of different functional groups to habitat change.

Abstract:Migratory connectivity describes the extent to which migratory species' populations are connected throughout the annual cycle. While recognized as critical for understanding the population dynamics of migratory species and conserving them, empirical evidence of links between migratory connectivity and population dynamics are uncommon. We analyzed associations between spatiotemporal connectivity and differential population trends in a declining and endangered migratory shorebird, the far eastern curlew (Numenius madagascariensis), with multiyear tracking data from across the Australian nonbreeding grounds. We found evidence of temporal and spatial segregation during migration and breeding: curlew from southeast Australia initiated northward migration earlier, arrived at breeding sites earlier, and bred at lower latitudes than curlew from northwest Australia. Analysis of land modification intensity revealed that populations from southeast Australia face greater human impacts compared to those from northwest Australia at both the breeding and nonbreeding grounds, a pattern that aligns with steeper population declines in southeast Australia. This alignment between migratory connectivity, human impacts, and differential population change highlights the importance of a full annual cycle approach to conservation that includes mitigating threats on the breeding grounds and better protecting nonbreeding habitats in Australia where far eastern curlew spend over half of each year.
